From 1992 to 2009 and certain newer vehicles, GM vehicles use the Tech 2 handheld scan tool. It is the same scan tool as is used also for GM, Saab, Izusu, Suzuki and Saturn including the Saturn Astra (Opel import).

The Tech 2 scan tool simply uses different 32 MB software cards which are removable and switchable. It is a very versatile tool. Extra memory cards cost an average of $449.00, which allows us to expand our diagnostic capabilities really inexpensively. The Tech 2 is menu-driven and user-friendly.

The Tech 2 scan tool is also used for reflashing GM vehicles. It uses a serial adapter with a network cable to connect the tech 2 to your laptop.

NOTE: A serial adapter is used on the laptops 9 pin serial port. Do not try to connect the tech 2 directly to your laptop with just a network cable, because it won’t work. GM has certified a specific brand serial to usb adapter for use on all modern laptops without a serial port. We do stock this part, with the cost being $59.95 plus shipping.

In 2004, GM began phasing in to CAN system cars and a CAN adapter was built so the Tech 2 could access them. GM called it a CANDI (Controller Area Network Diagnostic Interface) module.

If you are interested in having full diagnostic capability on GM vehicles 2009 and older, this is it. No compromises, and no expensive required subscription every year just to use it for diagnostics. You can count on the reliability of your diagnostic information 99.9% of the time when using a genuine Tech 2.

BEWARE OF CHINESE COPIES. THEY ARE SOLD EVERYWHERE. EBAY, CRAIGSLIST, EVERYWHERE AVERAGING $400-900.00. They don’t work correctly all the time and when they break, you throw them away. Don’t get suckered into a fake Tech 2 with a great price. We hear from people all the time that unfortunately got taken.

Chinese-manufactured Tech 2s are almost perfect on the outside. Inside is a whole different story. They can’t be repaired with Vetronix/Boschs quality parts. Chinese parts don’t qualify for the core charge! If you get one of these and it quits on you, toss it out.

In 2010, GM started phasing out the Tech 2 in favor of a laptop-based system called GDS 2. Six vehicles in 2010 are not Tech 2 capable anymore, with more being added to the list as the years go on.
The six vehicles are:

Chevrolet Volt gas/electric hybrid
Buick Lacrosse
Cadillac SRX SUV
GMC Terrain
Chevrolet Equinox

However, as of 2013, there are still GM vehicles that require a Tech 2 scan tool, especially the trucks.

For those who have been waiting, after a year of trying to figure it out, it finally works!!

It seems that in addition to the codes originally found by simpaty, BMW is using additional codes to block certain features from working in certain countries, based on where you are located. By changing this coding, you can enable the Lane Change Assistant to work regardless of your location.

The 3 codes to be changed are:
HU_NBT or HU_MGU:
Spurwechselassistent – Change this to Aktiv

SAS Module:
C_SWA_Vorhanden – Change this to True
C_SWA_Land_Aktiv – You will have to edit the Werte values to “FF, FF, FF, FF” This is the item that blocks it from working in certain regions.

This worked on my 2020 530e, but the coding was the same when I was trying to get it to work on my 2019 X3, however at the time I was unaware of the C_SWA_Land_Aktiv change that needed to be made. This should work regardless of if you have iDrive6 or iDrive7, and of course this is applicable to cars with Driving Assistant Plus, as the Pro is not yet available on the BMW ICOM.

The ISA, or intelligent speed assist, isn’t blocked by region, just a few codes to change. I had enabled it on my X3 when I was coding the car to Euro spec to try to get the glare free high beams and the lane change assist to work. I will look over my old backup codes and see if I can remember what specific items changed for that to work. It didn’t automatically change though, it would alert me if the speed limit outside changed, and then I could press the rocker switch on the steering wheel and it would adjust.

You have to have the Steering and Lane Control assist on, and it has to be detecting the lane lines, as well as a physical barrier between you and oncoming traffic, so either a median or a barricade. It also only works at certain speeds, I believe over 40mph.

Procedures:

Open Launch X431 pro Menu

Select “PEUGEOT V43.00”

Note: The software can diagnose the elec. Control system of PEUGEOT, include ENGINE, AT, ABS, SRS and AC. The operation is the same as the original scan tool.

It prompts “The calibration was successful. Erase the faults then read the faults. The ‘steering wheel angle sensor calibration fault’ should no longer appear. The fault LED should no longer illuminate. During this road test, there is no need to cause ESP regulation. Press on validate to return to the main menu.”

Some customers may experience various warning lights, reduced vehicle speed or a no start condition. Technician diagnosis may reveal one or more CAN communication error related DTCs and at least one control module will not communicate with IDSS. This condition was most likely caused by a failed reprogramming attempt of a control module.More ISUZU trouble please check here:ISUZU Trouble Repair

IMPORTANT: DO NOT REPLACE THE CONTROL MODULE.

It is possible to recover a control module after a failed programming attempt. Follow the service procedure below in order to recover a control module after a failed programming attempt or when IDSS cannot communicate with the control module.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1.Instructions for Control Module Recovery Fully close IDSS.

2.Disconnect the Isuzu E-IDSS interface module connector from the vehicle data link connector (DLC) [if connected].

3.Turn OFF the ignition and wait 1 minute.

4.Connect IDSS to the vehicle DLC and the PC USB port (if not already connected).

5.Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.

6.Open IDSS.

7.Choose the correct vehicle information on the IDSS Main screen and then click Submit.

8.Click on Controller Programming from the table of contents.

IMPORTANT: The left IDSS bulb on the ICON toolbar MUST be green at this point indicating IDSS is connected to the vehicle AND is talking to the PC USB port. If it is still red, check that the IDSS interface module is being powered up by making sure the IDSS interface module power LED is red. If it is red, then the PC may not be talking with the USB port and a PC reboot may be necessary.

9.If IDSS automatically goes to a VIN screen under Engine Control Module (ECM) Programming > Software and Calibrations > Replace and Reprogram Controller, go to Step 10. Otherwise, go to Step 18.

10.Enter the correct 17-digit VIN at the VIN enter screen, then click Next.

11.A pop-up message will occur stating the VIN has been changed. Confirm the correct VIN was entered, and then click Yes.

12.Do NOT turn OFF the ignition at the Install New Controller screen. Click NO when asked is the Original Controller installed.

13.Click Reprogram Controller at the Summary of Calibrations screen. Programming should begin.

NOTE:The controller is accepting the download IF the programming dialogue Sending Bytes is incrementing. The Sending Bytes incremental counter normally begins at around 20-30 seconds.

14.When instructed to do so after the programming event has finished, turn OFF the ignition and wait for the counter to finish counting down.

15.Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF, then clear all DTCs.

16.If this is a new ECM, program the Speedometer Calibration, Fuel Injector Flow Rates and any associated Vehicle Options.

17.Go to Step 24.

18.Navigate to the control module to be reprogrammed, and then choose Software and Calibrations > Replace and Reprogram Controller.

19.Enter the correct 17-digit VIN at the VIN enter screen, then click Next.

20.Do NOT turn OFF the ignition at the Install New Controller screen. Click NO when asked is the Original Controller installed.

NOTE:The controller is accepting the download IF the programming dialogue Sending Bytes is incrementing. The Sending Bytes incremental counter normally begins at around 20-30 seconds.

21.Click Reprogram Controller at the Summary of Calibrations screen. Programming should begin.

Symptom description:
The new column lock replacement parts have been installed in my 2005 M6 and now I need to instruct the BCM to ignore any odd codes from the column lock as a part of the fix outlined in the TSB.
Tool to use:
GM Tech2
TIS2000

Guidance:
Will need to pick up a Ac Delco subscription for $40 to start with so you can get access to the new firmware file.

Next, if you don’t have a rs-232 port on your laptop, will need to buy the needed USB cable so you can connect the GM Scanner tech II to your laptop on a USB port.


Now the easy part, Put the tech II into pass through mode, connect it to the car with car in run mode motor off, and bring up TDS on your machine to use SPS.
Now using TDS SPS, run through it until you get to the modules mode, and and select Body control module.

In the firmware selection screen utility to disable the steering control lock in calibration, and flash that it.

This will cover you to see what to select the firmware file to flash in.

FYI, it’s a new file and one that will not be in TIS2000 unless you have an active account that can connect to GM to pull the needed updated firmware file that was just released this year. Most don’t, so TDS for $40 for two years it the cheaper option.

A frustration to be solved:

Got the usb to rs232 cable and the $40 subscription but cannot for the life of me get the laptop to connect to the Tech2 and the car. I am getting messages from the website to restart my programming interface and when I log in and try to add the VIN, the website takes me to a bunch of warning messages and unread alerts. Once I get SPS up and try to run the process after selecting the Tech2 pass through mode and checking the connection, I just get error messages. I have gone the rough the connection and login process several times and followed the connection instructions on SPS exactly. I don’t know if I need to enter the VIN someplace but can’t seem to do that. The Tech2 connects to the car fine so it has to be the web, laptop, tech2 connections that is not happening..

Solution:

When you start SPS the first time, you have to set it up correctly. There are a few programs that you needed to download and install, as well as allowing a few sites to get through, then final Java updates that are needed.

After this and you have sps start up, when you get the first pop in SPS , did you install the Tech II J2534 driver or not?



Lastly, with Tech II connected to the machine, go in device manager and make sure that the tech II is showing up in the list as well.

Also to point out, not sure where you bought your Tech II kit from, but should have come with a candi module from the start that should be in play.

Q: Is it safe to update software with ISTA on all BMW’s that come through my shop ? What problems can I run into? (assuming I have a good power supply for car and laptop)
A: Depends on many factors, but as long as you use a good BMW ICOM and a good power supply, you should be OK.
Q: Can updates on comfort mode, brick an ECU (or more)?
A: As long as you stick to the proposed measures plan in Comfort Mode and your setup (laptop, software etc.) is solid, there shouldn’t be any opportunity to brick an ECU.
Q: If updates are safe, on what series can I do them ? BMW F, G for sure..can I do E ?
A: F, G and I series and for Motorrad models with vehicle electrical system 2020 (BN2020). E Series programming is not supported in ISTA+, use ISTA/P or WinKFP for individual modules. BMW ENET Cable you may also need.
Q: Updates for Navi maps, can I do them in ISTA also ? Again, is it safe ? Do you recommend E-Sys more for this job ?
A: I have not attempted this with ISTA+, but would assume process is similar to ISTA/P. I’d stick with ESYS strictly for ease of use.
Q: I have an BMW ICOM A2+B+C with ISTA all OK. And I understand that E-Sys is more complex than ISTA, regarding coding and programming for F-Series, as NCSExpert and WINkfp are for E-Series. You can do coding in ISTA also right ? for all series ? Or ISTA does less ?
A: You need to differentiate between coding and “encoding”. ISTA+ will do “encoding” depending on the programming required. That is not the same as coding (features). I don’t think I’d say ESYS is more complicated than ISTA+, each are different in the way they approach coding/programming.

Car Talk / Error When Programming BMW F32 In ISTA-P 4.19.13 Expert Mode (solved) by obd2lily: 8:55am On Apr 19, 2020
Problem:

I had error when programming BMW F32 in ISTA-P 4.19.13 Expert Mode. Vehicle programming with ISTA/P is no longer approved for the connected vehicle. Vehicle management is now only possible with ISTA 4.



*Before version ISTA 4 it was called ISTA/D (aka Rheingold).
It would cover diagnosis on all cars.
Beginning from version 4 its called ISTA+.

Solution:

The error indicates that BMW F, I, G series programming is not available in ISTA-P (since version 4.19.xx), but in ISTA+ instead.

From version 4, besides diagnosis it also covers programming of F series.
and ISTA/P is left for programming of E series only (therefore ISTA/P can not program F series anymore).

Here’re tips to set up programming in ISTA+ ( Rheingold or ISTA-D).

Run ISTA+ software, identify vehicle

Then choose Service Plan

Reading EEPROM chip


Prepare two keys: Original one+ blank one

Test two key first

The original key can remote and start the car


The blank key cannot work

Main 4 steps to program key:

Step 1: Get pin code

Step 2: Generate 48 dealer key

Step 3: Match new key

Step 4: Program remote

In detail…

Step 1: Get pin code

Connect X100 PAD2 PRO with KC100 to the vehicle

Insert the original key into ignition

Press X100 PAD2 on the device


Select Immobilization-> VW-> 4th& 5th Immobilizer system、

Turn on ignition switch

Select 4th immobilizer system-> VW Passat/CC (Recommend) -> Get PIN/CS

Follow the prompt to select EEPROM data

Codes will be extracted from EEPROM chip dump file

Step 2: Generate 48 dealer key

Select Generate 48 dealers key to activate KC100 adapter


Then input CS code


Put the blank key to coil


Generate 48 dealer key successfully


Step 3: Match new key

Select Match the key

Enter Pin code and learning key number


Enter the learning mode after confirm immo, use each matched key to turn on ignition switch

Match new key succeed


The original key and new key both can start the car, but the new key cannot remote

Step 4: Program remote

Select Program remote



Turn on ignition switch

Select 46 Central comfort module (CANBUS) -> Erase remote



Erase remote success



Then select Program remote

Press any key of the remote to add once program completed


Finally, the new key is working.
