But if you're like most Nigerians who are successful within Nigeria, you don't need a green card to provide for your family. In fact, it's those people I admire: they have successful businesses; mansions in Nigeria AND in the US/UK; can travel as they like; and send their children abroad to study. Very very few green card holders can do any of that; most are just barely surviving. Which leads me to do the math, as you say.

$23/hour * 2000hours/year translates to $46000 anually. Let's break it down (roughly):

Tax rate in Canada on the first $45,000 is about 16%, leaving (46000 - 46000*16%) = $39000
Housing is about 1400, give or take, depending on if you have dependents, and adding heating+electric+internet+cable, leaving (39000-1400*12) = 22200
Food is about 500, transport 200 (600 if you loan a car), clothing, cell phone, etc. can become another $1500/month, leaving (22000-1500*12) = $4200

$4200CAD is about #700,000NGN

These numbers may not reflect your reality, but I'd be impressed if you managed to save more than 700k per year in Canada. If you did, you'll need to save for almost 28 years. Don't forget you're also going to pay sales tax on your car, clothing, phone, in short most things, so you'll end up with less than this.

With 20million today, hah, my life will change.
How many persons in Nigeria can boast of 700k in Nigeria a year in savings?don't Forget that this is just his first job.

Pls do you know the meaning of green card I guess you don't know because if you know the meaning you won't be comparing 20 million to green card ok.

Now listen very well green card in your hand is the beginning of a new age slavery under the white man get that fact today. This is mistake many are making green card is not money ooo listen very well it's just a *a stay* or resudency* that is all, you will need to work your a s s to become anything in that environment, millions around the world from Nigeria with stays or green card are roasting out their some has be working with that green card for 15 years or more without having 1 million naira in their accout in Nigeria or equivalent in any foreign currency wherever they are talkless of 20 million.

I live their, I studied and not only live their i have their citizenship but Bro home is good I mean my Nigeria is great if not for bad government what is green card Bro it's a mere travelling and working paper, period

Have advised so many of my friends to come down home snd try something but some accepted but many refused and can't blame them insecurity etc but it's our country if Dangote, Adenuga etc still stays here in Nigeria then what is the excuse Home is good Bro.

God bless.
You advised your friends to return, yet you remained?

Well somany might see no sense in this but i still would say it anyway. I currently live in canada with a green card and i work $23/hr and 40hrs a week, pls do the maths and calc how much i earn in a month....mind you, this is my first job and i am just 4mnths old in Canada. Somany would pick 20mill and think they would start a biz with it....yeah it makes sense, only that 20mill might not sustain you for a long time and dont forget that theres no extra income to care for your needs, which means you probably would be practically living on the profits made from the biz you are starting and who says the biz will even boom?....remember you have families too that would not let you rest from the fact that they heard that you just received 20mill ooo. As i am, i can travel to any country i so like....any country!
But just analysing the two things, i think the green card is better cos it would give you the opportunity to make a good living both for you and your immediate family and you can make a living that would save you 20mill at the long run but on the other hand, 20mill will almost never give you a green card even if you get successful at the long run. This is just ma opinion sha ooo
after tax or before tax sir?

Hello, I can only comment on countries (Germany and Ireland) that I know their taxes.
However, if you allow me to give you just one advice. I would advice you, if you are looking to take up employment, to not use Taxation as a yardstick to decide where to go. These countries may have different percentage of tax, but the difference is at the end of the day very minimal. Taxation is not a simple arithmetic, and if it says you're going to be taxed 40%, it does not mean your whole salary will be taxed at that percentage. It's not Nigeria where government collect tax without considering the expenses the person incurred in the course of fulfilling the terms of the job contract.
Okay. Thank you so much.

Hey, if you know your onions, you don't need to "boss" over anyone. The respect will come naturally even though one can never have only admirers regardless if it's Germany or any other place in the world.

Regarding high tax, like I said before, the tax regime is actually very moderate when you do cost and benefit comparison. You get something for the tax you're paying. Besides, you don't get to pay 40%, because you would be earning a lot to be taxed at that percentage. The German tax system is very progressive which means you pay more when you earn more. 40% is called "Spitzensteuersatz" because it's the highest percentage of tax you can pay, and only a few people get to pay that.

At the end of the year, you're required to do tax declaration, and you can always set off the cost of transport and some other cost against your tax liability.

If I remember correctly, to be taxed at 40%, you have to earn above €75000pA. You equally have some kind of tax credit. The amount of tax you pay is also influenced by your status. If you're single you pay naturally more than a single father, or a married person, or married persons with children. As you can see, the German tax system is not simple, but it's very moderate.

You can read more about the Tax in the "Einkommensteuergesetzbuch" (EstG) which you can get in the library of your school. Make sure to get the one of the current year to be up to date.

If you can read German, this wiki page (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einkommensteuertarif) explains how to calculate income tax in the German speaking countries of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Thank you so much for this piece. I have really been touched. Yes, it's true that about single tax and the tax reduces as you marry and give birth. I'd look up the links and books you recommended. One last question if you may, I tried searching but couldn't get a definitive answer.
Please help me rank the following countries from low to high in terms of taxes.
Switzerland, Germany, Canada, UK, Australia, USA.
VIELEN DANK.

Well, if you're doing Engineering, you have a very good chance of landing a good job in Germany. With a German master degree in Engineering, Canada out of the three named countries might be the best destination. I know that Canada does organise a kind of job trade show. I once attended one with a friend in Frankfurt/Main.

Regarding taxation, I think Germany has a moderate tax regime. Though the social charges are quite high, but the health care is quite elaborate.

Thanks.. Appreciated.. Would look up the Canada option.
Yes there are engineering jobs, getting to the very peak, as in ability to boss the Germans is my fear.
Yeah.. Health care is best here in the world..
And by moderate taxes, you mean 40 percent is moderate? The tax here is higher than in Canada for example.

Disregard if it's been discussed before. Be aware that sharing (downloading or uploading) copyrighted files through peer-to-peer applications (like torrents), etc. in Germany is punishable by the payment of a sizeable amount of fine. You'll receive a warning letter asking you to pay the fine, and if you ignore it, you'll be required to appear in court. If you have a way of hiding your IP address, you may not get caught, but... So torrents especially, careful.
I think there's a workaround. Like me for example, the only reason why I would want to torrent would be to download softwares for school. Every other thing can be streamed. The only exceexception being pc games. Well if I really need to torrent that badly, I'd just get guys in 9ja who have unlimited Internet, have them torrent download the file I need and upload same to a cloud service from where I can safely download. Isn't efficient but should work.

Stop converting currencies. You guys know nothing about economics. Poverty is defined by where you live. It is very clear most Nigerians are clueless because you always convert currencies then think how how you will be spending back in Nigeria. Your 35k pounds should be defined by UK. standard which is nothing. It will take someone making 35k pounds over 10 years to save for a 20% down payment for a average 200k pounds house in London. Someone making just 200k monthly in Nigeria will build his house in less than 7 years. In America if you earn 12,000 dollars a year you are living in extreme poverty but some clueless Nairaland poster will see 12,000 dollars and think that's like 2.5 million. Married couple who make 25k usd are consider to be living in poverty in America. Do you guys know someone making $150,000 can't afford to pay for a private college for their kids? People who make 150k take loans to send their kids to school. You guys need to learn how the western world works
Bros agbeee...If you do not convert, how would you know how much you can invest in Nigeria via landed properties and assets? If someone earning 150,000 USD per annum cannot send his kids to school without a loan, how then do those oil workers in Nigeria who do not earn up to that manage to send their kids to these same schools?

35k per year is about N12m. so you are saying anyone earning a legit N1m a month in nigeria isn't in the rich bracket?

really?

you are indeed from the village......

£35,000 per annum is well above the poverty level and this is why theresa may wants only the rich immigrants in the UK. what percentage of the people living in the UK earns £35,000 per annum? i doubt it's more than 20%.

what has this gotta do with your outlandish remark that £35,000 per annum is living from pay check to pay check. the median annual gross wage in inner london is even less than £35,000......and that's central london where the highest wages are paid in the entire UK. the median gross wage of the entire UK is only £22,000. so how can £35k be considered living from pay check to pay check when the breadline(poverty line) is £22k?

is this one of your theories that you pulled out of the rectum of a baboon? i guess mike adenuga isn't among the first 2 million richest nigerians then according to your obtuse analysis.

this is irrelevant to your point.
you are actually making my point with that. UK immigration is technically telling you there that only the rich migrants who can contribute to their economy would be immune from immigration control. if you earn £35k in the UK, you are rich!
omoh...35K pounds translates to about 800k per month in Naija oh..Mhen..and thinking that this is the richest bracket, its not that greener on the other side oh...

I don't think I mentioned anywhere that I'm based in the UK. I cannot tell you about their income tax, I only went to the UK for visits. One of my friends who is currently in greater Manchester is trying to lure me to Scotland, but I am just unperturbed. I must admit that I am missing the orderliness of Germany, the dependability of the German system.
Well from the detailed analysis you gave about the UK, I thought you were based there. Well, I am currently doing a Masters in Engineering in Germany, and although I would love to work here as the place is very orderly as you mentioned, I feel I would easily make it to the very peak of my career in another region like the US, Canada or Australia. Then again, there is the language barrier, and the heavy taxation of residents which the German economy thrives on.

LOL..Make una no vex, my silenece was as a result of a couple of things beyond my control. One of the fact being that, for the very first time, I didn't really know what to scribble down and how or names to leave out.
On Monday, I took the print out proof of AOK insurance and international passport, as I went to hand over an insurance documents to a very dear friend for her own collection. By faith, I said by force by fire, as I'm going to the embassy, I wasn't just gonna become a channel again, the time for me to go is now! I had everything that morning for collection, but for the print out of the a.m matter mail from the embassy. It was past 9 but I was going no where until I get it I said to myself, I called my alien office and the response was positive. Lo and behold! Just like in a dream, an hour later the mail dropped like hot pap. Right inside the car park beside the embassy, where I was humming to Big Sean's song "Blessings"..."I'm way up, I feel blessed,...I'm way up, I feel blessed...." then the people around me wondered why my voice changed from a Michael Jacksin's falsetto to a Barry White's baritone but they won't understand that ended is a 2 year struggle, a moment that will turn around the fortunes of the bad crooner standing before them.
The journey was arduous, filled with streaks of disappointment from both family and friends (those times were the very lows) but in all victory was assured. Giving up was never an option, I didn't have time to complain, calmness and a strong faith was all I had. However, this wouldn't be possible without all your prayers here. For long I had a virtual family that sometimes translated to a physical one. Mentioning names is the hard part, but at decisive moments in the journey, Apart from family some people had done beyond encouraging words and prayers in their intervention. Guys still awaiting their mails, please, never give up, I started the big dream with less than 100k in my account, a phone & PC for research purposes and a will of steel. Family said no for so long, it was hard but I journeyed despite that to embrace my destiny even after one failure, quitting was not an option. If I can do it, then you can absolutely do it.

Well, you are not far away from the truth. When Germany used to have colonies, they were known for their brutality as colonialist. And they lost all colonies as a result of World War I. So it's not false that they are not used to "blacks" bossing over them.

Regarding the immigration law, I do not think Germany has a better immigration policy. Infact, the political discussions in Germany has always been dominated by the argument that Germany is not a "classical" migration country like the USA, Canada, or Australia, Argentina etc. to name just a few.

If you're an Engineer, and a very good one, and you have a choice between Germany and the rest of Europe, I'd always suggest Germany. You have a very good career chance as an Engineer or a person who is endowed in the handworks.
Well, I fault your immigration analysis. Germany has a fair policy for immigrants especially students who wish to stay behind.
As regards the engineering analysis, remaining in Germany would be good, but peeps say you cannot get to the top of your career here no matter your field if you're a black man, and this was also corroborated by your post

Lol. They don't ask folks to "show your papers" in the UK. The UKBA thing you sound on YouTube is something they just do randomly from time to time, just like they do in the US with Mexicans - nothing serious. The only difference is that black people aren't more than 3% of the UK's population, unlike US where AAs make up about 13% and it's easier to differentiate a black person from the UK from an immigrant, by just the way folks dress and mannerism - without even hearing them speak. Hence during the random checks (only in isolated cases), they tend to spot immigrants easily. And folks don't even get deported like that from the UK (The EU laws protect most people) - they just keep them in detention camps and allow them to seek asylum...and after a while the overwhelming majority of them always get released.

Also, whatever the OP wrote up there is the same for all Nigerians living in foreign countries not just the UK. A lot of Nigerians just like picking on the UK for reasons I'll never understand.

- Cab drivers: I'd even wager that there are more Nigerian cab drivers in the US (based on what I know and I've seen) than in the UK. I've never seen a Nigerian black cab driver, or even a proper cab company owned by a Nigerian in the UK - apart from a few part time private hire here and there, and those who do the airport cabbie. But in the US - there are loads of yellow cab drivers in New York City that are Nigerians. And that's just New York alone.

- Nurses and care workers: it's the same everywhere, from UK, to US, to Canada, to Australia. These countries need people in that field - and a lot of Nigerian immigrants, especially females work there. Big deal?

- Security: it's the same everywhere.

The problem is that these folks won't focus on the tons of Nigerian professionals/academics and gazillion of Nigerian business thriving in the UK. I don't think there's any Nigerian diaspora community with more thriving businesses than we've in the UK. Nigerians are everywhere.

Don't even get me started on the young Nigerians doing big things in the UK - making that pounds sterling and living large.

These folks just hate the UK. grin
two questions. Compare the taxes in the countries you mentioned, I wanna see the least please
Secondly, if the taxi driver can succeed big, how would you rate the prospect of one who studied Engineering for example?

Those guys complaining about being targeted by the Police should please go to the State of Bavaria or Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany, they will understand what a police state is.

However, even though there are some overzealous or even racist police officers, some of the predicaments we face are self afflicted. Some of our people like to cut corners, beat the system, and when they're caught, the oyinbo begin to stereotype everyone, we become potential suspects.
Despite all these, UK still offer a better opportunity for you as an "educated" African when you compare it to Germany even though Germany is economically, organizationally and structurally miles ahead of the UK. For instance, it's easier to land an administrative position as an African in the UK than in Germany.
Anyway, the only cure to us being mistreated is to get our country to run. We will earn the respect we crave if our homeland start to show signs of sanity. I'm afraid that might not even happen in my life time considering the situation Nigeria finds itself right now. The mentality of an average Nigerian, the lack of foresight of the political leaders, and the fact that Nigeria has defied reforms that ensure the growth of stable institutions and infrastructures necessary for development among others are very troubling. I wish Nigeria well nonetheless!
Nice post. I have heard many people say that about Germany. But when you consider that Germany has a better immigration law, where would you rather immigrate to? I feel it's because the Germans are not used to blacks bossing over them, that's why this discrimination exists

Where did you get this from? "So what is 4 that he can't afford after four years of hustling in London"?

Let's do some maths. Taxi drivers make between £500-£800 a week, let's assume his is very lucrative driving football players to trainings and stuff. He will make up to £1000.
That's £26000-£52000 a year. He has to pay the taxi company every week, but fuel, insurance, pay house rent and other domestic expenses.

So you think he could save N10m or around £30k-£40k per year after expenses. Mind you he has to pay tax.
