1)purchasing power;
Let's say you have enough money to buy 100,000tons at a go,do you think you'll still buy 1ton for 180k?
Hell no,you can have the audacity to tell the farmer that it's either 90k per ton or he go bleeps his mama while you humbly go and import from outside.
2)logistics;
It cost you 10-16k/ton to transport because you buy small small.
If you buy good quantity like I stipulated,you'll get to need bigger vessels or truck for haulage which when you fill to the brim and press calculator,you'll find out that it will cost like 3-5k/ton to transport because you now load more product per unit area.
3)Storage;
If you have money and capacity,you'll be able to build silos to store grains so that at time of scarcity,you'll have grains you had stored that will last you through the scarcity period.
You'll get to make money from hiking selling price due to scarcity even though you bought raw material at normal price,thereby maximising profit.
4)output capacity;
Imagine you have bigger machines that can handle more volume and push out more output per unit time,that is the same time and almost the same resources you use now to produce small small quantity will be used to bring out bigger output,that is you now get more jugs or kegs of oil on almost the same resource used to produce those small small ones you use to produce.
That further drives production cost down and gives you more room for profit or for you to be more competitive.
Imagine that...
Packaging;
Imagine you have capacity to buy 100,000 empty jugs at a go.
Will you still patronise iya big nyarsh that sell close to you with the small son at her shop with catarrh on his nose all the time?

The credibility of your supervisor matters a lot, probably more than the accessibility of information. The availability of information is not quite a factor today actually. In general, most PhD students need guidance during their PhD, as they conduct their research. Getting a good to great mentorship, as you can imagine mostly depends on your supervisor. I know a professor in my faculty of whom I will be ashamed to have him supervise even a PGD project work. The work will be so substandard that External examiners will make mincemeat of such work.
But he is a professor, and due to politics, nobody questions the nonsense he supervises.

As a realist, I would say this: studying for the PhD should have a reason why and that justifies the intention to spend 16 milli. Besides, 16 million is only an estimate. I spent over 20 million now. The UK educational system is very promising and encouraging and why the expense is overwhelming, the quality of education is second to non. Given that you are in line with your study, and with God on your side obviously, you can actually gain more after the completion of your study. Statistically, a lecturer earns at least £35k and above and the remuneration structure is fab! Now, if you don't intend to go into academia or research study, any employer will value your degree; it comes with a handsome package and a very well due respect. Alternatively, you can start your own firm because you will most definitely have an innovative idea during these 3 years programme undoubtedly,

Now listen, to be realistic, a PhD is basically a means to an end. And the end is simply more money.

So, for me, I can't spend that amount on any PhD except I have a position locked down waiting for me to step into as soon as I am done. Or unless I am very sure of getting a job placement in that foreign land as soon as I am done. If not, then the only way I can undertake such a PhD is through scholarship.

Trust me, PhD is research based. Which means u can do it anywhere, as long as u are willing to do the donkey work, u will still turn out a wonderful research and contribute greatly to the body of knowledge.
I however, had to admit that research is easier over there in UK cos u have access to prime data sources, premium online libraries and current methodologies.
