European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Jose Mourinho Appoined Chelsea Manager by ojotask: 2:50pm On Jun 03, 2013
Chelsea have appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager for the second time, two days after he left Real Madrid.

The Portuguese has signed a four-year contract and returns to the club he led to two Premier League titles, and FA Cup and two League Cups between 2004 and 2007.
Although he was sacked by owner Roman Abramovich, Mourinho remains a hugely popular figure at Stamford Bridge.
His return will be greeted with delight by Chelsea fans, who protested bitterly against his predecessor Rafa Benitez.
Chelsea's chief executive Ron Gourlay said: "I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate.
"It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that.
"He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again."
Mourinho ended his three-year tenure at Real Madrid on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Osasuna.
Although he won a Liga title, he had a turbulent relationship with senior players such as Iker Casillas and lost the support of many fans.
On Sunday night, he said: "I feel the people (at Chelsea) love me and in life you have to look for that.
"Life is beautiful and short and you must look for what you think is best for you," added Mourinho, who has also enjoyed successful spells as coach of Porto and Inter Milan.
Mourinho will be accompanied by three staff - Rui Faria, Silvino Louro and Jose Morais - as assistant first team coaches working alongside current first team staff Steve Holland, Christophe Lollichon and Chris Jones.
Chelsea said he will be officially presented in a news conference at Stamford Bridge on Monday, June 10.

Politics / Phd, MBA Holders Apply As Truck Drivers At Dangote Group by ojotask: 3:48pm On Nov 06, 2012
The Chairman and Chief Executive Director of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has made a shocking disclosure that PhD and MBA Holders were among over 13,000 applicants who applied for the recent Graduate Executive Truck Driver in his company.

Dangote disclosed this Thursday evening during a mentorship chat with World Bank Youth Forum (WBYF) Coordinator, Mr. Rotimi Olawale with the support of the World Bank Country Director, Ms Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly.

Speaking to the surprised youthful audience, the business mogul said that the company only needed 100 drivers but was surprised to receive over 13000 graduate applicants and amongst them were about six Phd, 65 MBA, 649 Masters and over 8, 460 Bachelor degree holders.

He said what surprised him most was not the sheer number of the applicants but the quality and calibre of those that applied who equally graduated from reputable higher institutions.

"All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions which is satisfactory; and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent", he said.

"Despite the fact that the drivers get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, the arrangement is that they will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300, 000 kilometres, which is about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano and a hard working driver can complete in two years, while lazy ones can take maximum of four years", he explained.

Speaking further, Dangote stated that his company is already one of the largest conglomerates in Africa, and disclosed that the group's five-year target is to reach a net-worth of $75 billion capitalisation and among the top 100 companies in Africa.

He assured that the group, which have diversified into various trading and manufacturing subsidiaries can achieve the set target with just three of them including Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugars/Salt, and Dangote Flours.

The business icon used the opportunity to advise the youths to be focused, forthright and that determination to succeed with integrity is the key to a sustainable wealth.

Travel / Nigerians Can Now Secure American Visa Within 20 Days – US Ambassador by ojotask: 11:56am On Oct 19, 2012
It is good news for Nigerians wishing to travel to the United States – and you can bet there are a whole lot of them – as it has been revealed that they can now secure the American visa within 20 days, and not 150 days anymore.
This was made known by the United States ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Terence McCulley, during an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP. According to him, “We recognise that the visa is an important part of our relationship and we have every interest in facilitating legitimate travel visas of students, people and tourists who want to travel to the US as part of dynamic series of exchanges between both countries.”
The ambassador attributed this to the hard work of the consular offices in both Abuja and Lagos. Both offices have been able to manage what is a very significant increase in work load without a concomitant increase in human or physical resources to manage the interviews that are being undertaken, he added.
Over the past years there had been a huge increase in demand for the US visa by Nigerians which led to a significant wait time to secure a visa interview. This, unfortunately, had permitted middle men and touts to grab appointments and then resell them, he said: “By reducing the time Nigerians have to wait to secure a visa, we hope to eliminate these people who are profiting on the gullibility of visa applicants and we hope to be able to offer better services,” he said.

KESHI: WHY I PICKED ZIMBABWE

Eagles Coach Speaks On Choice Of Southern African Country For Eagles Pre N/Cup Camping

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has explained why he wanted to camp the senior national team in Zimbabwe ahead of the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Keshi who led the Super Eagles to beat the Lone Star of Liberia 6-1 on Saturday to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations said Zimbabwe has the sporting facilities that will help the senior national team to prepare well for the African showpiece.

“I have done my feasibility study and I can tell you that Zimbabwe has modern day facilities that can help our team. I have been there before, so I have no problem with it,” says Keshi.

The former national team captain who submitted his proposal to camp the players in Zimbabwe to the Nigeria Football Federation on Tuesday would have to wait for the FA board to meet before the approval of the proposal.

Spokesman of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire also told Complete Sports that there is no decision that can be made for now until the FA meets at a date yet to be fixed to deliberate on the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will play Venezuela in an international friendly game scheduled for Miami, United States of America on November 14.

“The match is one of the games we want to use to prepare our players for the Nations Cup and we are going to invite the bulk of the players we are hoping to take to South Africa for the tournament", Keshi said.

Education / JAMB To Introduce Computer Based Tests For 2013 UTME by ojotask: 10:34am On Oct 04, 2012
Every year, hundreds of thousands of students sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to gain entrance into Nigerian universities. The large number of candidates coupled with other logistics problems often makes conducting the exams quite a headache for the examination officials and the candidates.

Sometimes, problems are experienced in the areas of insufficient materials which often lead to missing scripts or missing results.

However, to curb this, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde announced yesterday that three options would be introduced for the 2013 UTME.

Paper and Pencil Testing (PPT), Dibu Based Test (DBT), where questions would be presented on computers and answers would be on paper and Computer Based Testing (CBT) where both questions and answers would be done on computer.

When I first read the “Dibu Based Test”, I was confused until I realized he named it after himself. How interesting.

Mr Ojerinde stated that candidates were at liberty to choose one of the three options in the 2013 UTME.

By Adeola Adeyemo

According to him, candidates who chose the CBT option would get their scores a few minutes after writing the examination on their mobile phones.

“The internet age has come to stay with us hence as actors in the new age, you cannot afford to stay on the fence, you must be prepared to join the train or else you are left behind,” he told Daily Times.

This seems like quite a laudable initiative, but the question is this; is JAMB prepared to conduct Computer Based Tests for the hundreds of thousands of students who might opt for the new methods next year. In 2012, a total of 1, 503,931 candidates sat for the UTME and even though they were all Paper and Pencil Testing, there were still logistics problems.

I remember the last time University of Lagos tried to conduct Computer Based Tests for its Post-UTME candidates. With the few computers available compared to the hundreds of candidates, it was chaos. How then can JAMB conduct Computer Based Tests for hundreds of thousands of candidates across the country when some states obviously don’t have the resources to conduct the tests? Are they really prepared for this? I guess we’d just have to wait and see.

Politics / Re: Are We Loving Our Children To Death? A Must-read For Every Nigerian Parent by ojotask: 9:20am On Oct 02, 2012
Continuation . . .
Over-parenting is, in my opinion, the greatest evil handicapping the Nigerian youth. It is at the root of our national malaise. We have a youth population of tens of millions who are being "breastfed and diapered" well into their 30s. Even though the examples I have given above are from parents of considerable affluence, similar patterns can be observed from Abeokuta to Adamawa! Wake up mum! Wake up dad! You are practically loving your children to death! No wonder corruption continues to thrive. We have a society of young people who have been brought up to expect something for nothing, as if it were a birth right.

I want to encourage you to send your young men and women (anyone over 20 can hardly be called a child!) out into the world, maybe even consider reducing or stopping the pocket money to encourage them to think, explore and strive. Let them know that it is possible for them to succeed without your "help". Take a moment to think back to your own time as a young man/woman, what if someone had kept spoon feeding you, would you be where you are today?. No tree grows well under another tree, children that are not exposed to challenges, don't cook well. That is why you see adults complaining, "my parents didn't buy clothes for me this Christmas", ask him/her how old they are – 30 +.

Because of the challenges we faced in our youth, we are where and what we are today. This syndrome – my children will not suffer what I suffered is destroying our tomorrow. Deliberately reduce their allowance or mum – don’t cook on Saturday till late afternoon or evening, do as occasion deserve. I learnt the children of a former Nigerian head of state with all the stolen (billions) monies in their custody, still go about with security escort as wrecks. They are on drugs, several times because of the drug, they collapse in public places. The escort will quickly pack them up and off they go, what a life. No one wants to marry them. Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young - (Henry Ford) . Hard work does not kill, everything in Nigeria is going down, including family settings. It is time to rebrand our children, preparing them for tomorrow. We are approaching the season in Nigeria where only the RUGGED, will survive. How will your ward fare?

If the present generation of Nigerian pilots retire, will you fly a plane flown by a young Nigerian pilot, If trained in Nigeria?. People now fly first class, who cannot spell GRADUATE or read an article without bomb blast! Which Way Nigeria!, Which Way Nigerians!! Is this how we will ALL sit and watch this country SINK?

Pls forward to as many Nigerian parents as you know.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHO WROTE THIS BUT IT MAKES FOR INTERESTING READING & FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Friends,
Let me add the benefit of my time as a student and then resident in the UK – and I live in Lagos now. The first thing that I discovered about UK-born, white, English undergraduates was that all of them did holiday or weekend job to support themselves – including the children of millionaires amongst them. It is the norm over there – regardless how wealthy their parents are. And I soon discovered that virtually all other foreign students did the same – the exception being those of us status-conscious Nigerians.

I also watched Richard Branson (owner of Virgin Airline) speaking on the Biography Channel and, to my amazement, he said that his young children travel in the economy class – even when the parents (he and his wife) are in upper class. Richard Branson is a billionaire in Pound Sterling. A quick survey would show you that only children from Nigeria fly business or upper class to commence their studies in the UK. No other foreign students do this. There is no aircraft attached to the office of the prime minister in the UK – he travels on BA. And the same goes for the Royals. The Queen does not have an aircraft for her exclusive use.

These practices simply become the culture which the next generation carries forward. Have you seen the car that Kate Middleton(the lady soon to marry Prince William ) drives? VW Golf or something close to it. But there's one core difference between them and us (generally speaking). They (even the billionaires among them) work for their money, we steal ours! If we want our children to bring about the desired change we have been praying for on behalf of our dear country, then please, please let's begin now and teach them to work hard so they can stand alone and most importantly be content, and not having to "steal", which seem to be the norm these days.

"30 is the new 18", which seem to be the new age for testing out the world in Nigeria now.
That seems to be an unspoken but widely accepted mind set among the last 2 generations of parents in Nigeria. At age 18 years, a typical young adult in the UK leaves the clutches of his/her parents for the University, chances are, that's the last time those parents will ever play "landlord" to their son or daughter except of course the occasional home visits during the academic year. At 21 years and above or below, the now fully grown and independent minded adult graduates from University, searches for employment, gets a job and shares a flat with other young people on a journey into becoming fully fledged adults.

I can hear the echo of parents saying, well, that is because the UK economy is thriving, safe, well structured and jobs are everywhere? I beg to differ and I ask that you kindly hear me out. I am UK trained Recruitment Consultant and I have been practicing for the past 10 years in Nigeria. I have a broad range of experience from recruiting graduates to executive director level of large corporations. In addition, I talk from the point of view of someone with relatively privileged upbringing. Driven to school every day, had my clothes washed for me, was barred from taking any part-time job during my A-levels so that I could concentrate on studying for my exams. BUT, I got the opportunity to live apart from my parents from age 18 and the only time I came back home to stay was for 3 months before I got married!

Am I saying that every parent should wash their hands off their children at age 18? No, not at all, of course, I enjoyed the savings that I made from living on and off at my parent's house in London - indeed that is the primary reason for my being able to buy myself a 3 bedroom flat in London at age 25 with absolutely no direct financial help from my parents!

For me, pocket money stopped at age 22, not that it was ever enough for my lifestyle to compete with Paris Hilton's or Victoria Beckham's. Meanwhile today, we have Nigerian children who have never worked for 5 minutes in their lives insisting on flying "only" first or business class, carrying the latest Louis Vuitton ensemble, Victoria 's Secret underwear and wearing Jimmy Choo's, fully paid for by their "loving" parents.

I often get calls from anxious parents, my son graduated 2 years ago and is still looking for a job, can you please assist! Oh really! So where exactly is this "child" is my usual question.
Why are you the one making this call dad/mum? I am yet to get a satisfactory answer, but between you and me, chances are that big boy is cruising around Lagos with a babe dressed to the nines, in his dad's spanking new SUV with enough "pocket money" to put your salary to shame.
It is not at all strange to have a 28 year old who has NEVER worked for a day in his or her life in Nigeria but "earns" a six figure "salary" from parents for doing absolutely nothing. I see them in my office once in a while, 26 years old with absolutely no skills to sell, apart from a shiny CV, written by his dad's secretary in the office. Of course, he has a driver at his beck and call and he is driven to the job interview. We have a fairly decent conversation and we get to the inevitable question – so, what salary are you looking to earn? Answer comes straight out – N250,000.00. I ask if that is per month or per annum. Of course it is per month. Oh, why do you think you should be earning that much on your first job? ‘Well, because my current pocket money is N200,000.00 and I feel that an employer should be able to pay me more than my parents.’ I try very hard to compose myself.

Politics / Patience Jonathan Battles Parkinson’s Disease? - SaharaReporters by ojotask: 2:10pm On Sep 27, 2012
Patience Jonathan Battles Parkinson’s Disease
By SaharaReporters, New York
Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is battling an onset of Parkinson’s disease that has complicated her recovery from a surgical procedure in Germany, several reliable sources have disclosed to SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters broke the news that Mrs. Jonathan was flown to a hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany close to a month ago to undergo emergency treatment after a botched procedure in Dubai.

In interviews with three sources familiar with Mrs. Jonathan’s health status, SaharaReporters learnt that the Nigerian president’s wife is beset by Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative syndrome. The disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system. A medical source described it as “a fairly common disorder that occasions degeneration of the nervous system.” The source added that the disease leads to “progressive impairment and disorder of movement.” An online medical site notes that Parkinson’s “is characterized by progressive loss of muscle control, which leads to trembling of the limbs and head while at rest, stiffness, slowness, and impaired balance. As symptoms worsen, it may become difficult to walk, talk, and complete simple tasks.”

The bombshell revelation about the First Lady’s medical woes was first made by a source familiar with Mrs. Jonathan’s previous secret treatments in Spain and Italy. The source disclosed that Mrs. Jonathan had battled Parkinson’s for some years now. In addition, doctors had advised her to “do something urgent about her morbid body mass index (BMI),” said the source. She added that Mrs. Jonathan had indeed considered undergoing the kind of tummy tuck procedure that former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha once had.

Two other sources close to the Jonathans confirmed that the First Lady has been dogged by Parkinson’s. One said the disease was largely responsible for her clumsiness, drawling speech and slow movement at public events. He added that Mrs. Jonathan has been suffering serious trembling in the left hand. “That’s why she always uses her right to hold the microphone when speaking at public events,” the source revealed. Mrs. Jonathan also reportedly is affected by stiffness of the limbs and trunk which affects her movement.

A news staffer at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) told SaharaReporters that Mrs. Jonathan’s aides warned reporters covering her never to film her beyond her waist. “Her senior personal assistant told the crew covering her long ago: ‘Don’t ever film Madam’s waist. Show her face only.’ That’s been the code at NTA.”

Two of our sources stated that Mrs. Jonathan had made efforts to slow the disease that had started to ravage her. “She has been visiting a health farm in Italy on a regular basis since 2010,” one source revealed. “To alleviate her pain, she has been taking her medication religiously.”

A friend of Mrs. Jonathan’s said that the First Lady’s health maladies include anxiety, occasional memory loss and disorientation. In addition, her blood pressure often rises to dangerous levels, forcing her to take a cocktail of anti-hypertensive drugs.

Also, our sources said that some officials attached to the First Lady’s office described her as constantly depressed, prone to snapping at people at the slightest provocation. “The First Lady can just get angry at the slightest provocation and rain abuses at anybody in sight,” he said.

As happened during the health crisis of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Nigerian Presidency’s reaction to Mrs. Jonathan’s health condition is to be mum. When SaharaReporters contacted a senior aide of President Jonathan on the matter of the First Lady’s illness, he sharply said, “I’m not saying anything. And please don’t mention that you spoke to me.” SaharaReporters learnt that officials of the Presidency are under a virtual oath of secrecy on the issue of Mrs. Jonathan’s health crisis.

Politics / Reps Want N7m Pay Hike by ojotask: 10:45am On Sep 20, 2012
Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday launched an agitation for a N7m increase in their quarterly allowances, barely 24 hours after resuming from a two-month recess.

Each member of the House currently enjoys N27m per quarter as allowances but the lawmakers want the sum jerked up to N35m, The PUNCH learnt.

Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, reportedly had a hectic time calming frayed nerves at an executive session on Wednesday.

Some of the lawmakers, in seeking an increased allowance, at the closed door session, reportedly raised questions of financial impropriety against the leadership of the House.

They reportedly questioned how the “N5m” budgeted for each member’s medical expenses and insurance was utilised by the House.

One of the lawmakers at the session told our correspondent that “transparency and accountability were the main issues discussed at the executive session.”

“There are 360 members; we have funds budgeted for medical allowances and insurance.

“If you put aside some funds for these sub-heads, which is about N5m, we have to know how this money is being utilised.”

Tambuwal was said to have used the session, which lasted for over two hours, to explain to his aggrieved colleagues that the leadership was transparent in the running of House accounts.

A source said he explained that the delay in the payment of pending allowances was caused by paucity of funds.

The speaker reportedly tried to convince members that there was the need to prudently manage resources.

He reportedly called for the account books of the House in a bid to convince his colleagues that no lawmaker’s funds had been taken for any unofficial purposes.

The PUNCH had stumbled on a text message circulated to members before Wednesday’s session by some lawmakers, who said they were launching a project to clean up the House.

The text message had invited members to a meeting originally scheduled for the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Thursday (today).

Investigations revealed that the House quickly went into an executive session on Wednesday in a bid to stop the meeting and use the opportunity to clear the air on any misgivings.

The text reads, “This is inviting all first term members of the House of Representatives to an urgent meeting and launching of the Project “OPERATION CLEAN.” Date; 20th Sept. 2012. Venue-Transcorp Hilton, Abuja Time: 11am prompt.”

However, following what a member described as “the elaborate explanations by the Speaker”, the conveners of the meeting were reportedly “satisfied and saw reason to call off the meeting.”

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, however denied that issues of increased allowances and use of the House funds were mentioned at the executive session.

“It is not true; there was nothing like that as far as I am concerned,” Mohammed said in a reply to The PUNCH enquiries.

He said the executive session deliberated on a meeting held between President Goodluck Jonathan, the President of the Senate, David Mark, and Tambuwal on Tuesday night.

Mohammed claimed that the Speaker used the session to inform members on what transpired between the three leaders at the Aso Rock Villa.

According to him, Jonathan raised the opposition by the National Assembly to the planned introduction of the N5000 note by the Central Bank of Nigeria with Mark and Tambuwal.

“He (Speaker) told members that the President was under the impression that the National Assembly queried the Executive on the policy”, Mohammed stated.

But, he said Mark and Tambuwal took time to explain to Jonathan why the proposed N5000 note was not necessary.

He added that the two leaders of the National Assembly told Jonathan that they had a constitutional responsibility to protect the wishes of Nigerians, whose suffering would be worsened by the N5000 denomination.

However, a separate source, who attended the meeting, confided in The PUNCH that Jonathan hinted that he would direct the Governor of the CBN, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, to stop the proposed policy, having heard the position of the National Assembly.

“It is a good thing that Mr. President has promised to ask Sanusi to stop this N5000 issue.

“He gave Mark and Tambuwal the assurance”, the source disclosed.

The Chairman of a major committee of the House, also said, “take it from me; Mr. President has said he would stop the policy.”

What bothers me is more the lack of trust/controlling behavior that goes with this kind of things. I need my husband to trust me, if there is anything worrying him, he should talk to me instead of monitoring my phone/email/timetable...

Anyway, I don't have to worry much, we usually don't use each others phone without asking first.

Politics / Patience Jonathan's Aides Are Barred From Calls by ojotask: 11:58am On Sep 05, 2012
Nigerians may have to wait for a while to ascertain the condition of the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, following security censoring of some of the key aides who followed her to Germany for medical treatment.

It was learnt last night that the aides have been barred from telephone contacts with Nigeria.
But a source in government last night confirmed that the First Lady was a victim of food poisoning in Dubai .

The source said the fact-sheet indicated that she did not undergo any surgery in Germany, as reported by a section of the media.
The source said: “No one can actually talk on the state of health of the First Lady because those who followed her to Germany have been censored by security agencies.

None of them has been allowed to establish telephone contacts with Nigeria to avoid a misrepresentation of the state of health of Her Excellency.
“Only the First Family has up to date information on how she is faring. That is why it has been difficult to issue a statement by the Presidency.
“Everyone is in the dark in the Presidential Villa on how far the First Lady has gone with her treatment and when she would return.
“The media outage is understandable in view of the kind of media attention the sickness has attracted as if the First Lady is not human.”

More facts emerged yesterday on how the First Lady contacted food poisoning in Dubai late last month.
A Presidency source told our correspondent that after efforts to stabilise her worsening health condition proved abortive by the Presidency’s health team, the office of the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, was contacted on Friday, August 24 to arrange for a flight to Italy where she was expected to be treated at a specialist hospital.

Mrs. Jonathan would have been flown earlier on Saturday, but getting a permit to fly European skies was said to have frustrated the move, until about midnight when a positive response was obtained from the German authorities.

Following the approval, a presidential jet left Abuja on Saturday for Frankfurt, carrying the First Lady and a few trusted aides.

The First Lady was taken to Wisbaden where she is being treated for food poisoning.
The source said: “I am aware that she contacted food poisoning in Dubai. We really can’t say exactly what she ate in Dubai, which resulted in the ailment. But as soon as it was becoming difficult to get her stabilised here, we were advised to fly her to Bologna, Italy where a particular hospital is said to be good in handling such matters.

“Because it was an emergency case and there was no assurance that a permit would be granted for the team to fly European skies that night, we were still thinking of an alternative until word came in from the German authorities that we could fly in the next day. Calls were made to those asked to be on the alert for a journey to Italy as they would now be flying to Germany. The team left for Frankfurt the next day, Saturday, August 25 and Madam was then taken to Wisbaden where she is currently undergoing treatment.”

Asked why there was no official statement on the matter, another source said:”I really can’t say but there is no truth in the rumour that she underwent any operation. Before she left, the medical team was sure it was food poisoning which came out of what she probably ate in Dubai. I am not in the media team of the First Lady and, therefore, would not know why a statement was not issued.

“All I know is that the First Lady is recuperating and even shook hands with some of the aides that followed her to Germany before she was admitted. She was never flown out in an air ambulance but in an official presidential jet.“

Since the news of her ill health was published by an online news agency, the Presidency has kept mum, insisting that she had simply travelled out for some “moments’ rest” following her doctor’s advice.

A pro-development civil society group-the Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has frowned at the practice whereby government officials continue to seek foreign medical treatments thereby neglecting local health care infrastructure.

In a statement jointly authorised by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National media officer, Miss Zainab Yusuf, the Rights group urged President Goodluck Jonathan to end this retrogressive medical tourism by the top political elite from Nigeria but to build World class health facilities in the six geo-political zones to save Nigeria from capital flight. The group also challenged governors to rehabilitate the collapsing primary healthcare facilities.

The association, which stressed that it sincerely wishes Mrs. Jonathan a very speedy recovery, however, lamented that successive administrations continued to pay lip service to health care delivery.
HURIWA said: “We read with shock the media report that the wife of the President Mrs. Jonathan was flown to Germany... the first thing that comes to our mind immediately is to ask probing questing on the actual state of those first class medical facilities reportedly bought and installed at the Presidential Villa during the days of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua’s administration? What has happened to the several billions of tax payers’ fund injected into the running of the presidential mansion in Abuja including the presidential health facilities? It is wrong for Nigerian political elite to tacitly destroy our local health facilities just so that they can enjoy foreign medical services at highly exorbitant cost to the poor tax payers who do not have the privilege and benefit of enjoying any workable primary health care all across the rural areas of Nigeria.”

Days After Cynthia Osokogu's Alleged Death By Facebook Friends, Another Victim Shares Near-Death Experience

The use of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger (BBM) and others have come under mixed reactions by Nigerians after the death of Cynthia Osokogu who was allegedly killed by some friends she reportedly met via Facebook.

Just days after the news went viral, we received in our mail box a message from a Nigeria (name withheld), who wants us to post her near-death experience with a man she said was a BBM friend. Below is her mail; enjoy and learn.

"Hi, I am Tonia (not real name), a girl who has fears, beliefs, reservations and just your regular typical Nigerian girl. This past few weeks has been one hell of a game for me. I have really been unsettled and I thought I share this story with you.

"When Cynthia (the lady killed in the hotel room in Festac, Lagos) surfaced on the internet and various news media, I was scared and it brought back a whole lot of memories to me and also served as and eye opener. Many people castigated and criticised Cynthia (may her
gentle soul rest in peace), but my point is, it could have been anybody, anybody at all.

"We have met people through various social media. Some have ended up well, some have not but with painful memories. To cut the long story short, let me kindly share with you my encounter with social media especially the very popular Blackberry Messenger (BBM).

"I am a graduate and currently serving in Kaduna. I could have runced it, but I needed somewhere to clear my head and forget about my ugly encounter. Here is my story.

"I happened to have a married man as a contact on my BBM. He had been asking me out for over six months and I refused to date him. As time went on, he invited me clubbing with him when his wife was outside the country, and I went with him all night. We spent most of the night at Swe bar, Lagos.

"I also met his clique of friends, married as well with their various mistresses. We had 'mad' fun. After all the clubbing and drinking, he lodged me in a hotel somewhere in Obalende. I felt sort of safe with him. We did not have sex, but he made sweet love to me and touched me in places I had never ever imagined.

"He kissed me passionately but guess what? He did not have sex with me. We did all sorts but there was no penetration. So, to an extent, I trusted he was a good person to be around with. I did not know that it was all part of the plan.

"He gave me N10,000 and put me in a cab to go home the next morning. We kept talking and chatting and sending naked pictures to each other and he told me naughty things of how he wanted to whisper things in my ear, I blushed. We didn't see for two weeks and that was because his wife just came back from Turkey.

"One faithful evening, he pinged me that he was organising a beach party/boat cruise and that he would love for me to be his date and that he wanted to open a BBM chat, as a medium for his friends and my friends to interact. I was excited about it, I just wanted to have fun. I was able to get five of my very hot friends.

"The BBM group opened and we got chatting. I also realise that majority of them were married and working in reputable firms. It was fun and we didn't mind if they were married, we just wanted to have fun, as well as some other girls apart from my friends in the group.

"We chatted exclusively, sent pictures to the BBM group to introduce ourselves, and we had opened group conversations pending the beach party. And as excited as we were, we went shoping for nice sexy beach wears.

"The D-day finally came, we all assembled at the Lagos Island Boat Club. I was wowed because it was a high class party. We were cruising in a boat loaded with goodies drinks and hot babes, and as well 'MARRIED MEN'. I did not care, I just said in my mind that I would not roll with married men anymore after this, that for now, all I wanted to do was to catch some fun. After all, I wasn't paying bills.

"We got there, it was a private beach resort. Most of the beach facilities I got to see there were owned by multinational companies. We got out of the boat, and went to where we were partying. It was a duplex made with wood. It was a very nice setting.

"I felt comfortable because it even had a fence around it separating it from other beach houses around. So, there was privacy and of course bouncers (heavy looking guys) guarding the place. I said to myself, this must be heaven, I must be dreaming.

"Anyways, we felt free with each other because we had been chatting. It was 5:30pm and the party just started. We had drinks flowing from the private bar tender which happens to be owned by one of the men in the group. Reality struck when I realised that I was feeling dizzy and feeling really funny and light headed. Not only me, but other girls around me too noticed there was something strange about it.

"I was also feeling Hot as hell! I had been drugged. They monitored us and when they knew the drug had really gone deep into our system, they moved us up into the main beach house. I could still see faces, but was too weak and Hot to react.

"Mr B, the man who took me clubbing, carried me in his hands like a sacrifice and put me down on the floor just as other men also did with their girls. We were eight in numbers; 8 girls, 8 guys, and they all stripped us down and had sex with us.

"I enjoyed it a bit because I was Hot. It was a mixed feeling because I cried, I moaned, but I did not know how many times he came into me. He pounded me hard. I was dizzy, but he grabbed me with force. All I could notice was the wedding ring on his finger. I thought of how wicked and miserable some married can be. How inhuman and heartless they could be.

"All of them took turns in switching partners and slept with all of us. I passed out. That was the last thing I could remember. I felt water poured on me. I noticed all the other girls around me too were half naked and some stark naked.

"We spent the night at the beach, but the men were no where to be found. I looked round me and all I could see was packs of used condoms. I ran to pick my cloths and possibly raise an alarm. I got dressed, found my phone with an envelope. It contained N16,000 and a note asking us to take N2000 each for transport. Tears of anger and rage filled my eyes and the girls around me as well.

"We were drugged and used like tissue paper. I grabbed my phone and noticed a ping came in. I checked my phone and I noticed the BBM group had been deleted, and a message via BBM from MR B came in. He threatened me that if I say a word to anyone, I would regret it.

"I told him he was a bastard, and he said try it. A picture came in, several pictures. In fact, they were pictures of us being naked on the floor. Pictures of the humiliating us but they blurred the faces of the men. In total, I got 20 pictures. I was not myself for a month.

"I went back to school, I had no one to talk to. The rest of the semester was hell for me. My CGPA dropped drastically. It was the worst out of the worst result I ever had.

"Till today, my friends and I have not discussed this with anyone, but all I could do when I heard of Cynthia's story was to narrate my own ordeal anonymously and spread the news, the word, and pray they see it and changed their ways.

"I am now born again. I have given my life to Christ. I fear men so much that I cannot even move close to them. I still have nightmares, but with time, God will strengthen me and I will move on. My advice to single ladies out there is, do not be desperate for fun. Pray to God to open your eyes of understanding, and pray hard. He who kneels before God will stand before kings and queens.

"To all married women, pray hard to God to intervene in your marriages and turn your husbands from bad habits to and bad friends. As for me, I do not think I ever want to get married or date a man again. That chapter has been closed for good in my life.

Please, do not ignore my mail. Please post it. There are a lot of things we ladies need to learn including you. Please post it on your blog and save a soul. It could be your friend, sister, cousin, neighbour.

"God bless you as you pass it on. To all readers, I do not care if you insult me or rain abuses at me. My job is to share this encounter with you and save you from any mishap. God bless you all. Amen."

Amen."

R&B duo P-Square, P Square and brother, Jude Okoye, in an interview with BBC London, cleared the air on the issue between them and Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D.

P-Square was in London to perform at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London for the Love Afrobeat Festival, visited BBC Africa's studios, just before the concert.

Responding to questions sent by Facebook, Twitter and Google+ followers; CEO, Northside Ent. Ltd/Square Records, Jude Okoye said, "We did not sack May D. We just let him go."

It was reported last week that Square Records released a press statement announcing the end of their business relationship with the only other artist on their label, Mr May D.

According to the statement, the split is due to the irreconcilable differences between the two parties. The Okoyes further wished May D all the best in his career.

Reacting to the statement, May D said "I do not know what they are talking about. You know I don’t stay in their house so how am I meant to know this?”

May D was signed by the label some months ago and has released few hit tracks under the label including ‘Ile Ijo’, ‘Soundtrack’, and the remix he did with Akon and P-Square.

They also sang a cappella one of their latest hits, Beautiful Onyinye, which they recently recorded with American superstar rapper, Rick Ross.

Politics / OBJ - Nigeria Was Debt-free When I Left In 2007 by ojotask: 11:07am On Aug 29, 2012
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has scored his administration high, saying he achieved all that he set out to do as President between 1999 and 2007.
Obasanjo said this in Lagos on Tuesday after delivering a lecture titled, ‘Leadership foundation and underpinning’ as the guest speaker at the forum of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative.

He said after observing that Nigeria was at the precipice and under heavy debt, he focused on holding the country together, securing debt relief and improving the image of the country.

When asked if he had regrets concerning his two cycles of political leadership of the country, Obasanjo said, “When I was military Head of State, my main concern was how do we forge a united country and a self reliant country? So, the constitution was very important. We established a constitution that helped us to achieve that.

“When I came back in 1999, some people came to me and said I will be the last president of Nigeria. There were different groups at that time; there were the Egbesu Boys, the OPC and the Arewa. Some people thought the centre would not hold together. The need then again was how do we hold the people together and how do we pay off our debts?”

He added, “Nigeria was a pariah state, which nobody wanted to touch. But by the time we left, Nigeria was the darling of the world. So (for that) I don’t think there was anything I wanted to achieve that I didn’t achieve.”

He however admitted that his administration did not succeed in fixing the power sector, but blamed it on paucity of funds.

“If I had had money, I would have started working on power earlier than we started. People have forgotten that when I came in, there was little funds to do much. But then we started the National Integrated Power Project and the oil companies that were supposed to assist us were not forthcoming. I think it was only Agip that built something,” he said.

To buttress the achievement of his administration, Obasanjo said when he became President in 1999, Nigeria’s reserve was $3.7bn and the country was spending $3bn every year to pay interest on debts.

“At the time we owed about $35bn. But by the time I left, our reserve was about $45bn. We had paid all our debts. Our debt sum, all that we owed was about $3bn. And we had about $35bn in what we call the excess crude account for a rainy day. And when we left they said the rain has come and cleared the account,” he said.

Obasanjo also stressed the need for training of leaders in Africa to effectively respond to the global challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Sir Alex Ferguson Bans United Players Under 23 From Driving Flashy Chevrolet Car by ojotask: 4:06pm On Aug 28, 2012
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has banned the club’s young stars from driving flashy sports cars from new sponsors Chevrolet. United recently signed a multi-million-pound deal with the American car giant, who will become the name on the club’s shirts from the start of the 2014-15 season.

As a gesture of goodwill, Chevrolet immediately offered United’s first-team stars a choice of luxury cars and understandably many of the club’s big names plumped for iconic Corvettes.

However, Sportsmail understands Ferguson immediately intervened and decreed that no player under the age of 23 – no matter their standing in the team – should be allowed to order a sporty model.

This means players such as young striker Danny Welbeck, 21, and defenders Phil Jones, 20, Chris Smalling, 22, and Rafael, 22, will be banned from driving anything not approved by Ferguson.

The move is a classic case of Ferguson – the master man-manager – ensuring his young stars don’t get too big for their boots.

Ferguson has always been hot on matters such as this. Two years ago, for example, it emerged he told players in the club’s youth squads they were not allowed to wear coloured football boots.

Last night a United spokesperson confirmed: “As with most automotive partnerships, Chevrolet will be offering players a car. The model will be dependent on their time at the club and driving experience.”
