Politics / If I Were Nigerian, I Would Vote For Atiku Abubakar – Ex-ugandan VP by olanaijablog(m): 2:01pm On Nov 27, 2018
If I were Nigerian, I would vote for Atiku Abubakar – Ex-Ugandan VP

Former Vice President of Uganda, from 2003-2011, Dr. Gilbert Bukenya, has said that if he were a Nigerian, that he would vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, Atiku Abubakar.

Dr. Bukenya who has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Makrere also said that he would vote for Atiku Abubakar without hesitation or reservation because, “on an individual basis, he is unequivocally the best candidate.”

According to the former Ugandan Vice President, Abubakar is so passionate about the common good of the ordinary Nigerian that he never ceases to say “my people.”

Dr. Bukenya said he was left with so much to contemplate, during his encounter with Abubakar, that he never stopped thinking of how Nigerians are so lucky having the person of Atiku Abubakar as a Nigerian.

He said when he heard Abubakar had joined the presidential race, he immediately thought, “what an extraordinary opportunity Nigerians have.”

Below is his statement:

“I have rubbed shoulders with several African Presidents and Vice-Presidents. I have participated in many conversations with these men – both formally and informally.

Some of these conversations have attracted attention and many have been amusing – but very few have included intellectual and analytical discussions of substantive issues. Seldom in these conversations does one hear about the conditions and needs of the country’s poor.

In 2005, I met a man at his residence in Abuja, Nigeria, who surprised me. He welcomed me with a guarded smile and went straight to business. He was smart, eloquent and very knowledgeable. I was struck by his consistent reference to “my people.”

He was so concerned about the poor. He discussed impacts of educational injustices and weakened agricultural practices in Nigeria. Our conversation ended and we parted. While I left him with some traditional Ugandan gifts, he left me with much to contemplate. This Nigerian “big man” had sounded so earnest and completely devoted to “his people”. Surely, I was surprised and he has left a lasting impression.

We have remained friends over the years and I have observed his business and political dealings over time. I have noted the tremendous value that this man, Atiku Abubakar, has contributed to Nigeria’s development. He has been a philanthropic leader and a determined and passionate advocate for improving the national educational system.

I heard recently with great pleasure that he is running for the Presidency in the upcoming Presidential elections. I immediately thought, “what an extraordinary opportunity Nigerians have to elect Atiku as president of Nigeria.” If I were Nigerian, I would vote for Atiku Abubakar without hesitation or reservation. On an individual basis, he is unequivocally the best candidate.”

Education / ASUU Strike Update Day 23: FG-ASUU Meeting Again Ends In Deadlock by olanaijablog(m): 1:53pm On Nov 27, 2018
The Meeting by the Federal Government and leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities yesterday Monday 26th, 2018 also ended in deadlock just as the first meeting. Botht parties were unable to reach a middle ground. This implies that the strike by the lecturers continues as the meeting could not conclude on whether ASUU should return to work or not.
A reliable source privy to the meeting told newsmen that the discussions were centered on reviewing the contentious areas in the 2017 MoA which was quite a meticulous process.

ASUU Strike Update Day 23: FG-ASUU Meeting Again Ends In Deadlock
ASUU President, who initially didn't want to speak to newsmen after the meeting later said in a brief session with journalists after the three-hour talks, that the negotiations with the government would continue at a later date.

Attempts to get the Minister of Education to speak concerning the outcome of the meeting failed as he could not be reached.

Politics / Africa Bank Shareholders Sue EFCC, INEC Over APC Senatorial Aspirant, Echocho by olanaijablog(m): 1:09pm On Sep 22, 2018
A federal high court sitting in Abuja has been asked to order the arrest and prosecution of Jubril Isah Echocho, a former governorship candidate in Kogi state.
Echocho is aspiring to contest for a seat in the Senate under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in kogi state.

In the suit file by Afribank Stakeholders, led by Ahmed AbdulRasaq, the plaintiff asked the court to order the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate arrest and prosecute Echocho over allegation of fraud.
In the suit, he was said to have defrauded Afribank, now defunt.
The plaintiff also prayed the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from accepting the nomination of Echocho as candidate of the party in the election.
The stakeholders, through their counsel, Oghene Otemu, prayed the court for the following declaration:
A DECLARATION that the 1 st Respondent has a statutory duty to investigate, identify and prosecute all persons suspected of being involved in the economic and financial crimes reported to the 1 st Respondent.
*AN ORDER mandating the 1 st Respondent to proseeute Jubrin Isah for his involvement in the embezzlement, financial malpractices, financial misappropriation and financial mismanagement of monies belonging to Afribank Nigeria Plc.
*AN ORDER restraining the 2nd Respondent from accepting Jubrin Isah as a candidate for any office for the 2019 general election and any other elections.
In the affidavit in support of the originating summons, deposed to by
Ahmed, the plaintiff said while
Echocho was a director of the bank, he was indicted by the EFCC of defrauding the bank of billions o/ naira,
The plaintiff said in the affidavit:
*That despite the indictment, the 1st respondent, EFCC, has rcfuscd to prosecute Jubrin Isah,
*That the indicted Jubrin Isah has indicated his interest to contest [or the office of the Senate of the fcdcral Republic of Nigeria.
*That it will be very disastrous to allow indicted element like Jubril Isah to contest and win elections in Nigeria and hold an elective position.
*That allowing indicted elements like Jurin Lah to contezt and win in Nigena and hold any elective or appointive position will bring rnuch embarrassment to Nigeria as the internet is a wash with of fraudulent activities.
*That the said Jubrin Isah has been thoroughly investigated and indicted by the 1 st Respondent.
No date has been fixed for the heating of the matter.
A petition was also written against Echocho on the alleged fraud.
It reads in part
PETITION ON BEHALF OF MR. GBOLAHAN PETERS AND AHMED IBRAHIM
FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF AFRIBANK, ALHAJI JUBRIN ISAH OF CONSPIRAcy, FINANCIAL MALPRACTICES & ECONOMIC CRIMES.
REQUEST FOR PROSECUTION OF ALHAJIJUBRIN ISAH
We write as Solicitors to Mr. Gbolahan Peters and Alhaji Ahmed O. Ibrahim of Forum for Zero Tolerance to Financial Crimes, Abuja (hereafter referred to as your Petitioners) and wish to draw your attention to the criminal indictment against Mr. Jubrin Isah the erstwhile Executive Director of Afribank Nigeria Plc and the seemingly conspiracy by your Commission under the leadership of your predecessor to bringing him to justice.
Mr. Jubrin Isah, (herein after referred to as the Suspect) was the Executive Director of Afribank Nigeria Plc, who was disengaged through the dissolution of Executive Management team of some Banks in August, 2009, over financial malpractices and mismanagement of the Afribank Nigeria Plc.
Sequel to the dissolution, the Suspect was arrested and severally investigated subsequently upon which he was indicted and first arraigned with Sebastian Adigwe’ Osa Osunde, Isa Zailani, Chinedu Onyia, Henry Arogundade, Falcon Securities Ltd and Peter 01010 before the Federal High Court, Lagos with Charge No. FHC/L/294/09. Moreover, in the Amended Charges filed of 13th April, 2010, the 33 amended count charges against the Suspect and others revealed that the Suspect and others mismanaged and thereby committed a financial crimes to the total tune of over 60 Billion contrary the Failed Banks (Recovery of Debts) and Financial Malpractices in Banks Act Cap. F2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act and the Investments & Securities Act.
The SUspect and his co-accused were also arraigned before the High Court of Lagos

18 Lamorde in Afribank — The Eagle Online state, Ikeja in May 201 1 with Charge No. 10/160C/201 1
However, to the consternation of your Petitioners and in what can only be depicted as a scheme and official conspiracy, all the charges against the Suspect were dropped while the prosecution team turned him to prosecution witness without any justification.
We wish to note that your Petitioners’ apprehension is not unfounded as the followings justified their fear:
I . During the Suspect’s initial criminal trial at Federal High Court, Lagos, in 2009, the Suspect, though was charged as co-accused was never brought before the court but was busy campaigning to become Peoples Democratic Party flag bearer in Kogi State, while your Commission under the leadership of your predecessor, Mrs. Farida Waziri maintained that the Suspect is nowhere to be found.
The Suspect by the summary of the charges, facts and circumstances of his indictment was not only the Executive Director of AfriBank Nigeria Plc, but by his admission in his statement made to your Commission, was in charge of Investment Banking, covering Treasury, Financial Institution, Federal Public Sector, Private Banking, E-Solution and Corporate Support, thereby making him to played the leading role in the offences charged.
Instances abound in the trial where other accused have queried your Commission’s decision to make the Suspect, your witness instead a co-accused considering the enormity of his indictments.
All the transactions of the Banking and Financial malpractices which formed the indictments of the Suspect and others were well documented of which his indicted as the principal accused person and thereby made him being turned to prosecution witness defective.
The absence of the principal accused person in the trial as co-accused would sp ell doom for the prosecution of the charge.
Against this background, our extant brief is to ask you to use your good offices to review the decision of your predecessors, and ensure that the Suspect is brought to book for his liabilities in the financial malpractices and economic crimes.
You are no doubt aware that it is now an established fact within and outside the shore of Nigeria that the bane of Nigeria under-development is as a result of economic
crimes in public and private sectors.
to This fact is very compelling that it lead to the establishment of your commission effectively tackle and curb the trend.
No doubt, you are also aware that your Commission’s glooming public perception in
18 Lamordo in Afribank — The Eagle Online fighting the economic crimes is not unconnected with your Commission’s wittingly and/or unwittingly insincerity and seemingly lack of will to prosecute those who have been apparently indicted like in the case of the suspect.
Your Petitioners cannot therefore allow this obvious inequality without it been addressed and it is in the circumstance of the foregoing that your petitioners in consideration of Section 24 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and other enabling laws in Nigeria request your quick review of the indictments and prosecution of Alhaji Jubrin Isah for the purpose of bringing him to book for financial malpractices and economic crimes perpetrated while serving as Executive Director of Afribank Nigeria Plc.
TAKE NOTICE that if by 7th June, 2012 no practical steps and demonstration of good faith to bring Alhaji Jubrin Isah to book is taken, we shall without further notice, set in motion, machinery of justice to compel you to do same.
It is our firm confidence that by your Commission’s claims that no one is above the law, you will not hesifate to investigate the above allegation and bring the culprit to book.
Thanks for your mutual belief in the supremacy of the rule of law.
Accept, please, the firm assurances of our highest regards.
Yours truly,

Crime / Driver Lands In Trouble As Prostitute He Picked By The Road Flees With Boss’ N5m by olanaijablog(m): 12:11pm On Sep 22, 2018
A 54-year-old driver of the chairman of an outsourcing firm located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State, is in trouble after a s-x worker allegedly fled with his boss’ Kia Sorento sports utility vehicle valued at N5.4m.

According to PUNCH, the prostitute, identified only as Nina, reportedly fled with the vehicle at a filling station in Ikoyi immediately the driver, Victor Dossa, came down to fuel it.
Dossa, who lives on Ikoyi Crescent, usually took the vehicle to his house after taking his boss home at the close of work.
It was gathered that Dossa drove the vehicle to Obalende around 11pm to convey Nina to his house, perhaps to have fun together overnight, and as they were returning home, Nina drove the vehicle and suggested that they stopped at a nearby filling station to buy fuel.
While Dossa came down from the vehicle to monitor how the fuel being bought was being dispensed, Nina zoomed off.

The case was said to have been reported to the police at the Onikan Police Division and the driver was arrested.
Dossa, who hails from Benin Republic, reportedly told the police that he first met Nina in the Obalende area a week before the incident.
He said, “I was brought to Nigeria in 2004 by the company chairman. I work with him as a driver in charge of the Kia Sorento SUV with the number plate, BDG 644 BJ. Whenever I closed from work, I parked the vehicle in my house. The following day, I would go and pick my boss from his house to the office.
“My boss did not come to the office on August 17, 2018, so the vehicle was in my house throughout. Around 11pm, I drove it to Obalende to pick a sex worker whom I met a week earlier. I only know her as Nina.
“On our way back to my house, she drove the vehicle while I was at the front passenger seat. She stopped at a filling station along Awolowo Road to buy fuel. She gave money to pay for the fuel. The moment I came down from the vehicle, she zoomed off. I don’t know how to locate her. I don’t know any of her friends either.”
Dossa was subsequently brought before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court by a police prosecutor, Sergeant Francisca Job, on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.
The charges read, “That you, Victor Dossa and one other at large, on August 17, 2018, around 11pm, along Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area, within the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony, to wit, stealing, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected to summary trial.
He was granted bail by the presiding magistrate, Y.O. Aro-Lambo, in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till September 26, 2018 for mention.

Politics / Osun Election: Politicians Dash Voters N10,000, Woo Them On Whatsapp by olanaijablog(m): 12:04pm On Sep 22, 2018
Some of the contestants and their political associates have devised new means and tactics to induce voters ahead of the poll as 48 governorship candidates from 48 political parties jostle for 1,246,915 votes in the Osun State governorship election holding on Saturday (today)

The representatives of at least one of the contestants were using the WhatsApp social media platform to woo Permanent Voter Card holders, who are residents of Osun State, to sell their votes, PUNCH reports.

This was despite attempts by the Independent National Electoral Commission to curb vote-buying and selling especially in the Osun election.

Checks by our correspondents showed that the associates of the contestants cleverly hid their identities.

To track the identities of the buyers and the politicians they were working for, one of our correspondents connected to an online link that in turn linked him with a WhatsApp number 08120569530, where he was asked a series of questions to ascertain if he actually had a permanent voter card and if he was an Osun State indigene.

The administrator later promised that N10,000 would be deposited into our correspondent’s account number at 6am on Election Day. The correspondent was asked to send his account detail, age, town, ward and unit to claim the amount.

The administrator said, “You’ll receive bank alert 6am on the Election Day. Don’t forget to pass this good news to all your friends and family. Make sure you add us to you(r) phone book and don’t forget to send this to all your friends and family living in around Osun State. Expect our call anytime from now.”

It was difficult to ascertain the party or governorship candidate that initiated the payment process. When our correspondent tried to call the number, using Truecaller, a mobile app that finds contact details globally, to trace the owner, it did not respond.

Almost immediately, the administrator sent a message that our correspondent would be stopped from enjoying the N10,000 vote-buying price. “Please, no WhatsApp call and if you keep calling, we’ll block you,” the administrator wrote.

Meanwhile, one of the contestants was said to have started distributing money to the ward leaders who would identify names of their party members on the voter registers and pay them ahead of the poll.

A source close to one of the politicians told one of our correspondents on Friday that money had been moved to where the distribution would be done in order to pay for the votes.

He said, “There is nothing they can do to stop vote-buying especially in this election, because politicians are desperate to outdo one another in their bid to buy votes.

“They have started bringing money out but this time round, because of the noise over it, they will be more discreet in sharing the money. Money has been given to the leader of the party in our area but they are yet to tell us how much.”

It was gathered that the sponsor of a particular candidate compelled some party leaders to swear an oath that they would spend the money he wanted to give them to induce voters and not pocket them.

Some of the leaders were said to have agreed while a few of them were said to have rejected the money because they could not swear this oath of allegiance.

The same candidate was said to have distributed forms to prospective voters, asking them to fill in their accounts details to enable them to be credited with the sum of N10,000. The amount is said to be meant for any voter with a PVC. Another interesting topic; “I almost ran mad the day I was paid 60 kobo for a movie role”, says Comic Actor Okunnu

Politics / Ekiti Government Begs Buhari For Forgivenes-say Fayose by olanaijablog(m): 11:54am On Sep 22, 2018
The Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) that was shut by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for breaking electoral and broadcast codes is still sealed.
The radio and television stations were shut down on July 14 following alleged serial breaches of broadcasting code and unethical practices.
They stations were first sanction and fined N500,000 for inappropriate broadcast and were finally shut down when they were used to announce fake governorship election result by the state governor, Ayo Fayose.
The Ekiti state chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria,(FIBAN) on Monday sent compassionate appeal to the Federal Government and NBC to re-open the radio station.
FIBAN made the appeal in a communique issued at the end of their Elders Council meeting held in Ado-Ekiti and signed by the Chairman, Mr Dada Adeniyi and the Secretary, Pastor Adebayo Olowookere.
The association said the continued closure of the state-owned broadcast stations had caused a lot of setback to the economic situation of their members and the state at large.
The association, which comprises of independent presenters, said the closure had almost turned them to beggars, as it denied them of their daily livelihood.
FIBAN pleaded that the concerned authorities should reopen both the Ekiti State Television (EKTV) and Ekiti 91.5 FM to keep them in business and allow for more choices by viewers and listeners.

“The FIBAN elders council hereby joined other sister unions in appealing to the NBC to reopen the stations in the interest of the masses.

Politics / How I Got Fake NYSC Certificate – Adeosun by olanaijablog(m): 10:39am On Sep 17, 2018
Kemi Adeosun, the finance minister until yesterday, in her letter of resignation to President Muhammadu Buhari responded for the first time officially to the allegation of forging the NYSC exemption certificate, by expressing profound shock.

In the letter, the British-born Nigerian said she did not relocate to Nigeria until she was 34 years old, four years older than the 30-year limit for participation by corps members.

She blamed those she called ‘trusted associates’, who helped to arrange the ‘exemption certificate’, that came back to haunt her many years after.

“I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

“On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine.”

Her letter also revealed that she took the decision to resign after an internal investigation ordered by President Buhari declared the exemption certificate as fake

Crime / EFCC Denies Raid On Standard Chartered Bank by olanaijablog(m): 9:58am On Sep 17, 2018
The raid by operatives purportedly wearing the jackets of the Commission might have been the handiwork of errant officers who acted without authorisation," EFCC said.
he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied its culpability in the Friday raid of the headquarters of Standard Chartered Bank in Lagos.

Officials of the commission were said to have raided the bank, an action the bank described as uncalled for.
The bank was one of four banks fined by the Central Bank of Nigeria on allegations of issuing irregular Certificates of Capital Importation (CCIIs).
However, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesman said the commission was unaware of the raid.
A statement by the EFCC read: “The raid by operatives purportedly wearing the jackets of the Commission might have been the handiwork of errant officers who acted without authorisation.
“The action is in flagrant violation of the standard operation procedures of the Commission as it is not the style of the EFCC to openly raid the offices of banks and other financial institutions.
“Officials of such institutions who are wanted by the commission, are usually invited for questioning after discreet investigation. Over the years, banks have been cooperative in releasing their officers to the Commission for questioning.
“The Commission will investigate the circumstances leading to this illegal raid by errant officers and those found culpable would be subjected to the internal disciplinary mechanism of the Commission.
“EFCC again reassures Nigerians that it is an agency which adheres strictly to the rule of law and will, as much as possible, avoid draconian measures in its fight against corruption.”

During police investigation, they could not give satisfactory explanation on what caused the fight,” the prosecutor said.
Three women has been sentenced to 45 days in prison for fighting in public.
A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja, sentenced Amina Ishaq, aged 22; Praise Bassey, aged 29 and Mariam Soliu, aged 23 following their arraignment on a two-count charge bothering on disturbing public peace and causing harm.
They all pleaded guilty and ask for leniency.
The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the women an option to pay a fine of N3,000 each.
Maiwada advised them to live and maintain peace among themselves, saying the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Ifeoma Ukagha, had told the court that after the convicts finished fighting and causing harm on themselves, they went to Karmo Police Station to report the matter on September 12.
Ukagha said that on that same date, the convicts sustained injuries on their bodies through bites and clawing.
“During police investigation, they could not give satisfactory explanation on what caused the fight,” he said.
Ukahga said the offence contravened the provision of Sections 113 and 244 of the Penal Code.

Politics / APC Gov Candidate: Tinubu Adamant About Decision On Ambode by olanaijablog(m): 8:55pm On Sep 14, 2018
Dayo Oketola, Sesan Olufowobi, John Alechenu, Gbenga Adeniji and Oladimeji Ramon
There were indications on Thursday that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had yet to back down on his decision to find an alternative to the incumbent governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, in the 2019 governorship election.
There had been reports that Ambode was no longer in the good books of Tinubu, which political watchers said might cost him his second term as governor.
On Tuesday, two new aspirants emerged under the APC umbrella to vie for the governorship ticket with Ambode, blowing open the discord between the governor and his godfather.
They are Dr Obafemi Hamzat and Jide Sanwoolu.
The mandate caucus, headed by Tinubu in the APC, had endorsed Sanwoolu, while the chairmen of the 57 councils in the state also gave their backing to the former Lagos commissioner.
The development was said to have rattled the governor, his team and the people of the Epe division, where he came from.
President Muhammadu Buhari, Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi; and Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, were said to have embarked on a last-minute move to save Ambode.
It was gathered on Thursday that after the meeting between Tinubu and Akiolu did not yield any result, the former Lagos State governor was summoned to Abuja.
Sources told our correspondents that the meeting was influenced by the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, who was said to have been called by members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, a body currently being headed by the governor’s wife, Bolanle Ambode.
Although the details of the meeting remained sketchy as of press time, it was gathered that Tinubu, who flew to Abuja on Wednesday, did not back down from the position of the mandate group that Sanwoolu should become the next governor of Lagos State.
The source said, “The issues are many – alleged sidelining of party elders, the scrapping of PSP waste management initiative, the sacking of highway managers, award of contracts to a few cronies, ignoring advice from party leaders – they are many, and Asiwaju did not see how all could be resolved without Ambode leaving.
“However, the presidency has put pressure on Asiwaju and although the man has yet to back down, there is hope because he has gone back to Lagos to consult with his followers in the mandate group. We hope that all will be well.”
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Ambode declined to see some monarchs in the state, who had come to pay him a solidarity visit.
It was learnt that the monarchs had gathered at the Adeyemi Bero hall in the state secretariat for their regular meeting and had afterwards decided to visit the governor.
“But the governor did not see them. He just stayed in his office. Some officials of the government later came to talk to them and they left,” an official, who declined to be named, said.
He added that the governor was hopeful that Tinubu would support him, saying that the governor was not ready to fight those who brought him to power.
‘We’ll free Lagos from political vipers’
Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress has said it will rescue Lagos State from the stranglehold of “political vampires and emperors.”
The National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralph Nwosu, said the people did not chase away the military to enthrone emperors who would corner the nation’s commonwealth.
Nwosu, who said he was upset by what was transpiring in the state, urged the people to rise up and reject the continued rule of the APC in the state.
Also, the Lagos State Chairman of the ADC, Chief Babatunde Daramola, urged the people to reject an arrangement where “one individual is collecting N4bn of your money every month.”
He said the ADC had come to give the people back their right such that anyone could become anything in Lagos State without needing to “visit Bourdillon to go and see the lion or go to Lugard, to see an elephant.”
Nwosu and Daramola spoke on Thursday at the official opening of the ADC Lagos State Secretariat in Onipanu.
Nwosu said, “Some of us worked and fought under NADECO; we spent our resources. We didn’t get the military to leave power to now have emperors; enough is enough. The victory of this party must begin from Lagos State because Lagos State is full of political vipers and they must be removed.”
Daramola, who spoke earlier, said it was time for Nigerians to reject political oppression.
He said, “Nobody is coming to rescue us; we must rise to the occasion. If we don’t rise up, God forbid, our children will be enslaved.”
Daramola said what the ADC stood for was participatory politics, saying the party was out to create a level-playing ground such that even the children of the poor could become great in Lagos.
Lagos can’t continue to be in Tinubu’s pocket – Group
A socio-political group, Lagos Democracy Advancement Forces, has said Tinubu, should cease to dictate the political pace of the state.

It noted that the political atmosphere in the state was unnecessarily overcharged due to the “shenanigans of one individual desperate to maintain a political stranglehold on the state.”
The group said, “Lagos State cannot continue to be in the pocket of Asiwaju Tinubu. 2019 provides an auspicious opportunity for a mass political revolution by Lagosians to liberate the state from continued political and economic enslavement.
“Lagos State with a population of almost 30 million people is a mini Nigeria and cannot continue to pay homage to the insatiable appetite of a political tarantula.’’

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, Convener of the group, Mark Adebayo, said there was the need to stop the state from continuing to be a pawn on the chessboard of an individual.
Sanwoolu to make formal declaration – Team
Meanwhile, Sanwoolu Campaign Organisation has said the aspirant would soon make a formal declaration his intention to vie for the Lagos governorship seat.
A statement on Thursday by the Director General of the organisation, Mr Tayo Ayinde, read in part, “The Olusola Sanwoolu Campaign Organisation is on course. His formal declaration will happen shortly, followed by his rally.
“The campaign organisation remains focused on its objectives and will not be distracted by unfounded rumours and insinuations.

“We thank all APC members in Lagos for their overwhelming support.”

Politics / Lagos 2019: Ambode Speaks On ‘rift’ With Tinubu by olanaijablog(m): 8:48pm On Sep 14, 2018
The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday said reports of a rift between him and national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, were untrue.

Mr Ambode made the clarification in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Habib Aruna, in Lagos.

Both the social and traditional media have been awash with news of a major rift between Messrs Tinubu and Ambode over alleged disagreement on the second term bid of the governor.

Mr Aruna quoted Mr Ambode as telling party faithful in Epe during the election of delegates for the presidential primary election and national convention of the party that the reports indicating a fight between him and Mr Tinubu were out of place, and ”there was no fight anywhere.”

“I want you to know that there is no fight anywhere. The national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and my good self we are not in any fight, we are not in any controversy.

“We are praying to God that the best is yet to come and the best will be what Lagos State deserves and I want you to just continue with your prayers that at this time, God will show His hand and make sure that everything that is of blessing to Lagos State and also blessing of Epe will come to pass,” Mr Ambode was quoted as saying.

The governor commended leaders and party faithful who contributed to the success of the delegates’ election in Epe, saying APC remained the party to beat in Lagos and Nigeria.

“We have just concluded our delegates’ election in Epe local government and by consensus, we have picked our three delegates that will be going to the national convention come October 6 for the presidential direct primaries and the convention for all other people.

“I want to say a very big thank you to all our delegates that are present here; I want to say a big thank you to all our leaders that have also supported us to make sure that this event has come and is done very successfully.

“I want to reiterate once again that our party, All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the party to beat; we are the party at the national level and we are going to remain the party in the state,” the governor said.

According to the statement, the event was held at APC’s secretariat in Aiyetoro, Epe, with three national delegates from Epe Division — Shakiru Seriki (Bamu), Bode Alausa and Olayinka Oladunjoye, the state’ commissioner for commerce, industry and cooperatives, elected.

The division comprises one local government area (Epe) and two local council development areas (Eredo and Ikosi-Ejirin).

The party leaders and faithful in the division, according to the statement, also took turn to affirm their support for the second term bid of the governor.

Those listed include the chairman of Epe local government, Adedoyin Adesanya; chairman of Eredo LCDA, Saliu Adeniyi; chairman of Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA, Samson Onanuga and party chairman in Epe local government, Kehinde Adeniyi.

Also included are the state welfare officer, Abiodun Bankole; former member of House of Representatives representing Epe, Bola Gbabijo and member of Lagos State House of Assembly representing Epe Constituency II, Segun Olulade.

The APC women leader in Epe, Iyabo Adegboyega; LGA party secretary, S.A Owolomose; youth leader, Abdul Ibrahim; Bode Alausa, Akin Oladipupo, among others, were also listed among the party faithful at the event.

Politics / 2019: Mimiko Explains Why He Joined Presidential Race by olanaijablog(m): 8:37pm On Sep 14, 2018
Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Thursday, explained why he joined the presidential race on the platform of the Labour Party in the 2019 general elections.
His declaration speech was entitled “Because We Care”.
According to him, “There comes a moment in the life of a nation when every patriot must stand up to be counted! At such a moment, no person worthy of a place in history can afford to remain ensconced in their comfort zone.
When the totality of our being and the very essence of our humanity are in violation, patriots must advance to recapture the present; and commit to re-defining the future. For our country, Nigeria, the moment is now!”, Mimiko told a gathering of party leaders and stakeholders at the LP National Secretariat, in Abuja.
“It is time to all march out and recall our past, take charge of the present, and launch out into greatness, as one inclusive, cohesive family. It is within the foregoing context that I situate myself.
“It is the reason why I find it so compelling to humbly declare today, my decision to seek election into the office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2019.
The Medical-Doctor-turned politician said: “I am running because like many Nigerians, I am sick and tired of seeing our country become the butt of jokes everywhere you travel to around the world. I am running because I know we can do better; and we will do better.
“I know this because anywhere Nigerians find themselves, no matter the situation, we always rise above adversity. We don’t just survive, we thrive. It is high time we replicated over our country, that indomitable spirit of Nigerians, that spirit of accomplishment, which has made stars of individual Nigerians all over the world.
“The only way to do this is by electing capable hands. It is by electing a great president, that can drive this national vehicle to greatness.”
On restructuring of Nigeria, Mimiko said “I once again, hereby commit wholeheartedly to leading the process of restructuring Nigeria.
“I say this not as a cliché. Rather, this is a commitment that derives from a deep conviction that there is really not much we, as a people, can do even in the best of times, to place our country on the global cutting edge of development, for as long as it remains shackled and ensnared by a centralized governance structure that is the 1999 Constitution.
“It is indeed only in the context of a restructured system that the hope for a strong, stable and functional Nigeria lies.
“As governor of Ondo State for eight years, I saw first hand what limitations the federating units are confronted with, in the unitary system of government that we operate, which we wrongfully refer to as federalism. From security administration, through taxation, to investment in infrastructure, many of the things taken for granted in several federal climes, the basis of their vitality, are denied under our 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“This makes it practically impossible for state governments to be anything other than pitiable adjuncts of an overbearing central government. It is from the anvil of such practical experience that my commitment to Restructuring was further sharpened. It is noteworthy that the redeeming cry now is, restructure and safe the nation!”
On insecurity and wanton killings across the nation, Mimiko said “there is also no denying the fact the centrifugal forces that seek to tear our nation apart have been greatly strengthened in the past few years.
“One cannot but mention in this regard, ongoing killings all over the country, but especially in the Middle Belt. The attendant devaluation of life is constantly expressed in unmistakable cheapening of human life in our cities, towns, and villages.
“Nigerians have now almost completely lost their sense of outrage over the taking of human lives, as we can see in the heightened but evil commitment to ritual killings, kidnapping-related killings, unprecedented violent robberies, and sundry activities of emergent street gangs.
“We must also fully interrogate the nature of the ongoing massacres in the Middle Belt and elsewhere across the country. It is particularly worrisome that a systematic demographical reconfiguration is underway in our country. The class content of the massacres must also not be lost on us.”
In his reaction to the declaration, National Chairman, Labour Party, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdusalam (Paladin Paiko) said Nigeria can restore its glory and reclaim its greatness if Mimiko is given the opportunity to lead Nigeria.
Mimiko’s declaration had in attendance leaders of several political parties, including, Chief Peter Ojonugba Ameh, Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council and Chairman Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, Chairman of National Conscience Party, Tanko Yunusa, the Chairman of Alliance of Social Democrats, Dr. Emeka Okengwu.

Politics / Buhari’s Emergence As Sole Presidential Candidate Will Crush APC – PDP by olanaijablog(m): 6:09pm On Sep 13, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday said with the “emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has become grossly unpopular among Nigerians, as sole Presidential candidate,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) “is now irredeemably doomed for a crushing defeat in the 2019 general elections.”

PDP pointed out that President Buhari’s “fear to contest an elective presidential primary, for which he and a few APC leaders scared away other presidential contestants within their party with threats and high nomination form fees, ended up ruining APC’s chance of fielding a good candidate for the election.”

A statement by PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said, “Had President Buhari shed his desperation for power and allowed for internal democracy within the APC, particularly when it became clear that Nigerians across board have become averse to his re-election, due to his incompetence and insensitivity to the plight of the citizens, there would have been little hope for the APC.

“In muzzling contest in APC and gleefully emerging a sole candidate, President Buhari has merely won a pyrrhic victory; a General without a troop, with no capacity to face a general election, as the army of stakeholders and the masses that supported him in 2015 have since left him because of his unfulfilled promises and many failures in governance.

“Now that Mr. President has confirmed by his body language that he had no chance in a party he leads, how then can he stand a chance in the general elections where millions of Nigerians, who are suffering untold hardship because of his misrule are only waiting to deal him a blow with their votes?

“Owing to Buhari’s incompetence, Nigerians’ purchasing power has become abysmally low, industries have wound up with attendant mass job losses, foreign direct investments have hit all time low, international partners have totally lost confidence in doing business with our compatriots, while this administration has no economic blueprint except borrowing.

“Since President Buhari’s declaration to contest the 2019 election, true democrats and other well-meaning citizens have continued to leave the APC in droves to the repositioned PDP, which has now become the rallying platform for all Nigerians, in their collective quest for a new President among the array of very credible aspirants in the PDP.

“Moreover, while it is settled that President Buhari is no match to any of our presidential aspirants, all indices points to his imminent defeat as the PDP remain committed to a credible, free, fair and transparent Presidential primary, where Nigerians will freely participate to throw up that President that will lead our nation to the path of unity, peace, good governance and economic prosperity for our people.”

Politics / Firms Sue NUPENG For Purportedly Forcing Non-members To Join Strike by olanaijablog(m): 5:55pm On Sep 13, 2018
Firms sue NUPENG for purportedly forcing non-members to join strike

By Emma Amaize
TWO companies operating in Delta State, Victoria Manpower Solution Nigeria Limited and Sunshine Management and Consulting Limited have dragged the National Union of Petroleum and Gas Employees, NUPENG, to court for allegedly compelling labourers independently sourced and supplied British Oil and Gas Exploration Limited to join an industrial action by members of the union.

Igwe Achese, National President of NUPENG,
In a motion on notice by their counsel, G.O Oniomovigho, before a Delta State High Court sitting in Effurun, the plaintiffs urged the court to “grant an interlocutory injunction restraining NUPENG, either by itself or her agents from obstructing, disturbing, frustrating and interfering with the contract agreement between plaintiffs and British Oil and Gas Exploration Limited (second defendant) pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.”
Personnel Manager of 1st plaintiff, Mr. Terry Obanogun in an affidavit in support of motion, said: “NUPENG is forcefully compelling the labourers supplied to the second defendant by the 1st and 2nd plaintiffs to join the industrial action embarked upon by her members.”
He said that the contract entered by the two companies with British Oil and Gas Exploration Limited had nothing to do with NUPENG and the labourers were not its members.
At the time of this report, no date has been fixed for the hearing of the motion on notice.

2019: One shot as PDP members protest imposition of candidates in Cross River

A member of the People Democratic Party (PDP) was on Monday shot as protesters numbering over a thousand stormed the party’s secretariat in Cross River State.
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Nathaniel, said there was argument between some members of the party during the protest and one unidentified man brought out a locally made pistol and shot the victim.
The protest was led by aspirants and prominent members of the party, including the former state chairman of the party, Ntufam Ekpo Okon, immediate past Special Adviser to Ayade on Security Matters, Mr. Jude Ngaji and the immediate past commissioner for New Cities in Ayade’s government, Mr. George Ekpungu, among others.
Speaking to newsmen, the former Chairman of PDP, Ntufam Ekpo Okon, said “The truth of the matter was that we are very conversant with democratic values; we are conversant with the content of the constitution of our party.
“We have read the guidelines for this primary, the process of nominating party candidates and we did not jump into it, we have paid our dues, now the process has started, they brought in imposition of candidates.
“We bought our nomination forms and paid all fees that were required only for us to be called and told that the National Executive Committee of our party or National Working Committee of our party has taken a position to direct that all incumbent members of the National Assembly should be returned unopposed.
“That means if we go through the congress, we do not have any chance because they will send names that have been chosen. They pretended as if they have conducted congresses to nominate adhoc delegates, meanwhile, they did not do congress anywhere in the 196 wards of Cross River State,” he said.
He said PDP had not learnt any lesson, stressing “One would have expected that PDP would have come out of the situation wiser but if this is what PDP has chosen to do, it is not acceptable, it is not going to go down with us and we will not accept it.
“We members of the party insist that let there be level playing field, we are ready to contest and we want to contest in a level playing field. What they called congresses of Saturday was writing of names, that must be canceled and let us do a democratically conducted congress supervised by INEC.
“Let us ensure that our party members make a choice, look at APC it is doing direct primaries. If I remember, after the 2015 windfall that finished us, the Ekweremadu’s committee recommended direct primaries, we jettisoned all that.
“To day, even the indirect primaries, we can’t open our heart and do the right thing, these days, people holding offices, do not want to be assessed, you force them on the electorate not minding if there is a local understanding in terms of zoning, you don’t care about it, they must go back.
“If this was the case, why don’t you make pronouncement and stop selling forms, you sold form, collected money from us and you turn round and shortchange us, it is not acceptable,” he stated.
Reacting the PDP State Chairman, Ntufam Edim Inuk asked the protesters to present a protest letter for him to forward to the national secretariat rather than disrupting activities in the party secretariat.
“We are only the state chapter, if they are aggrieved and not satisfied, they have right to write a petition to the National Secretariat of the party.
“They can say they are not comfortable with the decision of the party. That instruction did not come from this office, it is from the National and as law abiding citizen, they have to do their protest legally.
”Because anything beyond this, we will think and suspect that it is from the opposition party; if they don’t listen to us, we will think that they are from the other party.
“All the aspirants are my people, you cannot impose candidates on them but the decision of the party is supreme, you cannot go against it and anything you can do is to protest by writing, I am a father of all.”
When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo, she confirmed the shooting of one person, adding that policemen were deployed immediately information got to the commissioner of Police.
“Immediately the commissioner of Police got the information, he ordered the men to move to the scene, nobody was arrested but we were told one person was shot,” she added.

Politics / Re: Nigerians ‘ll Enjoy 24-hour Power Supply If Buhari Is Re-elected, Says Amaechi by olanaijablog(m): 4:56pm On Sep 13, 2018
Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours power supply if Buhari is re-elected – Rotimi Amaechi claims
Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has said Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours electricity if President Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected.
He said the Buhari administration has achieved a lot in security, road, war against corruption and so on.
The minister, who spoke yesterday during an interactive session with the media, said the government was tackling killings associated with herdsmen,
Commenting on why Buhari and the APC government deserved a second term, Amaechi said: “Nigerians have taught me a lesson I learnt in politics and that is why nothing bothers me again. The people praising you today, if you see them when you are out of power, you will be shocked. Those singing hallelujah and hosanna will still be the same people to shout crucify him tomorrow.
“We have done much more than transport. In terms of corruption; this economy was a rent economy. Public money was spent anyhow and it was an economy that was not worked hard for. This is why you see politicians today very rich and one year after government, they are poor. They are like that because they don’t know how to manage the money.
“When Buhari came, he said no and that we cannot continue to spend anyhow. Buhari has not said people should not steal; he has rather kept quiet to see who can steal because there is a consequence for stealing.
“I don’t want to say it has stopped completely, but it has reduced. Before, there were many empty houses in Abuja. People were building and speculating that new politicians would come in and buy. But we came in, we could not buy because of the economy. So if you say Buhari has not done anything on corruption, you are being most unfair.
“Also, the 2016 budget was six per cent capital, but we are doing 20 per cent capital now. We are doing 80 per cent recurrent and 20 per cent capital. We believe that in the next two to three years, we will get to 30 per cent capital and we will get there if we reduce the current expenditure and deal with wastages.”
He continued: “It is also unfair if Nigerians think the Ministry of Works is not working. The road to Bonny was abandoned after Obasanjo left the government.
“The contract sum for the road was below N39billion, but it is now N120billion. When I was governor, I wrote to the Federal Government under Jonathan that I wanted to do the road for N39billion, but they didn’t reply me.
“My final year as governor, Energy wrote that they would take care of 50 per cent of the bill and I wrote again to the Federal Government, but they didn’t reply because I was in APC. Now that the Federal Government wants to do it, the cost is now N120billion.
“So, Buhari government is dealing with corruption, building roads. The worst road in Nigeria used to be between Uyo and Calabar, but it has been awarded.
“The road to Enugu too that people are complaining about, contractors are working on the road already. The work may be slow, but they are working. When we came, oil was $28 per barrel and our budget was $35 and suddenly it dropped, but the minister of Budget managed it for us to survive. Now oil is $74, but we still have not reached $110. If we get to that, things will change rapidly. Also, the Ilorin-Jebba road. Contracts for the construction of many roads have been awarded.
“There is also an improvement in power. We have moved from 3000megawatt to 7000, but we are distributing 5000 because some of the infrastructures are not in good state. But we are fixing them.
“The expectation is that it should be 24 hours power supply, but there will still be a gap. But if you give us a second term, that gap will be closed.”
On insecurity, he said: “There is improvement in security. When the President promised security; he was looking at Boko Haram. Boko Haram no longer have the power that they had then. Before we came, the situation was worse, churches were not safe, but now you can go to church freely and nearly all the security agencies that had special protection have reduced their protection gates because fears have reduced.
“The threats, which used to envelope the North, have reduced and we are addressing the ones in Borno, unlike before where they would overrun villages and hoist their flags and say they owned the villages.
“If you ask of our achievement, I think many people can attest to what we have done. People no longer go through rigorous searches before entering public places.
