My dad is currently not certain about Paying the half tuition plus maintenance fee, ever since the new CBN rate evolved.....

I won't like to miss both my MSc and this job offer. That will be disastrous

Let me state clearly that whatever advice i will give here will be my own personal opinion.

First off, this your current job, is it in line with your career? Is there career progression? Do you see yourself improving on the job and what are the long term benefits you see on the job (not necessarily cash benefits)?do you like the job? is the work environment good? If your answer to these questions are positive, then i will say forget UK masters and take the job offer. You can do masters in Unilag or any of the other big federal universities we have in Nigeria. Please note; If UK were still giving post study visa to students like some other countries do presently, my position would have been different.

The truth is after your UK masters, what next for you? You will likely not get a job in Uk and will still end up coming back. Definitely going to the UK is good, not just for the education but for the fact that you get to see life differently which will also challenge you to be better in all aspects of life but if i were to advise anyone currently in your position, even my own family member, i would say forget UK masters.

Infact, you can work with this company for a while and then after about 2 or 3 years, you travel for your masters and then come back submit your CV to Hr and then get higher pay with a higher position. Alternatively, you can do your masters hin Unilag (if you don't mind doing it in Nigeria) while you are working.

Finally, i am just a man prone to errors (i know nothing), have you asked God? Please communicate with him in prayers. I remember some years back when i wanted to travel out, i prayed a difficult prayer. I told God, if it is your wish for me to travel, then let the whole visa process be smooth for me and if not, let me be denied visa. Ever since i have stepped foot in UK, it has been one favour to the other. So please, this is a major decision and only God can lead you aright no matter the responses you get on here. I wish you all the best in whatever decision you take.

What about going along with £1,000 then when getting there, open an account after that, then you tell your home to send in the remaining mentainance money into your UK bank account from Nigeria.

How about that, just suggesting.

Sorry I relied late. Was busy yesterday for my home gal Lanicky. She needs your help this Saturday. Check my signature for more details.

You can do whatever with your maintenance money once you get your visa. The money is yours. Whichever way you decide to go about it is up to you. Provided you have a way of sorting out yourself when you get to Uk in terms of accommodation and feeding.

As for the enrolment, you have enough time since your program starts ending of September. I will suggest you enter Uk at least 1week before resumption so that you have enough time to find your way around and also know the buses that will convey you to school (if staying outside school).

You should go for the enrolment if you get your visa on time bro. Although I don't think it is compulsory as some schools even allow students to come even after 2 weeks of resumption due to visa issues.

Entering Uk early let's you settle in easily. You can then go and do your biometrics at the post office close to where you live, you can easily sort out your accommodation issues, apply for NI on time, open a bank account etc

As for how to go about moving money from Naija to Uk, I really do not know how that parol works. This whole forex stuff no be small thing.Speak to people. All the best bro and don't forget Saturday is all about Lanicky tongue

If glasgow coledonian a good university when it comes to getting a job after school

If you are talking about jobs, are you talking about in Uk or in Nigeria?

To be honest with you, Glasgow Caledonian is a lowly ranked school in Uk. Infact, the last I checked, it is not in the top 80 schools in uk and I think Uk has just about 115 or 120 schools there about. So you can see they are very below.

But that should not discourage you as it depends on what is your long term plan hence the reason I asked the question above.

Let me suggest to you that if you can get extra £2,500 or £3,000 pounds, why not apply to Strathclyde Univeristy (In top 40 school in UK)It is also in Glasgow, Scotland just like Caledonian University. The difference in fees between both schools is just about £3000 depending on the program.

If you have the money, I will suggest you go for Strathclyde Jniveristy but if otherwise is the case or probably you have a better discount or offer in Caledonian Univeristy, then I will say go for it. If you read hard enough and you get a distinction (masters) or first class (undergraduates), the school you attended will matter less if you look for Job in Nigeria.

Also please note, the fees in Strathclyde Univeristy is very high but they have very huge amount of scholarships you can take advantage of depending on your course. Infact, let me say that in the whole of Glasgow, only Gkasgow Univeristy probably has more scholarship options than Strathclyde Univeristy.

Caledonian probably has about 5-7 scholarships options but Strathclyde has close to 20 scholarship options for different courses. I know this schools very well.

Univeristy of Glasgow (in top 25 schools in UK) is another school you can try but the fees are very high and the entry requirement to study there is also high when compared to Caledonian University.

All in all, whatever program you chose and whichever school it is, try and check out student satisfaction records, employment rate after Univeristy etc A school with a positive record will always openly display the statistics on their website for everyone to see.

All the best.

A friend asked if it's not too late to pay the tuition around July, and hope there's still time.

Waiting for your answers guys.
Thanks

Definitely not too late but while he still has not yet paid for tuition, he can keep the maintenance fees in the bank. I will recommend as from 1st of July (maintenance fees should be in the account) so that by the time he must have finished paying for fees, he will just fill his online application and then select date for interview , print out his statement (end of July) and then take along all other required documents already listed on his CAS letter and then go for the interview.

Please note: I am assuming your friends program starts this September. Cheers

Exactly. That is what it means. Print the statement when it is closer to the date of your interview. Not more than 31 days.

I don't know why you guys are just giving yourself unnecessary high Bp.

Thinkin, complaining, anxiety will not change anything. Rather you guys should be +ve and prayerful. Infact, you guys should be thanking God this is happening now. There is still some time before September to make any amendments where possible.

I still insist the rates will drop to around £1 = 350 naira (black market rate). Just calm down and wait.

It dropped between Saturday and Sunday.

As at Saturday it was £1 = 500 naira and on Sunday it became £1 = 430 . Naira will appreciate, i strongly believ so.

O ye of little faith, be very string joor. By next week, I believe everything will stabilise better and then students will know their fate.

Called my account officer Today at first Bank, concerning the new Pounds rate due to the CBN flexible forex policy.

She said CBN gave them a directive to hold on transactions at the moment concerning Form A, till they set the new Pounds exchange rate.

Gosh.......am so scared now, just praying it doesn't go more than 320. Cos i haven't even paid my tuition yet.

Bro nothing to worry yourself about. Naira is already appreciating against the Pounds. I can tell you that it can never exceed 340 with Form A or bank rates. I don't also see the Oanda exchange rate exceeding 340 at the worst case scenario.

Please note

If the rates should exceed 340, OlowoB will not be held liable as what was written up there is based on my own forecast. cheers.

Please I need clarification from anyone that understands how Oanda works. The dollar rate was quoted at 253/dollar today. I checked the rate on Oanda and I saw 197.302/dollar and 283.182 for a pound.

My question is these:
1-How does Oanda rate arrived at?
2-Is it going to remain like this for a period of time before they effect the new rate?

I am asking the question because I have kept money in my account since 3 weeks back for the purpose of using it for my Visa application before the new policy was introduced. The 28 days mark will be reach next week end. So I am bit scared about thee new policy and its implication on oanda rate by the time of making my application.

Your response will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You have nothing to worry about. The UKBA will use the rate as at the date of your printing out the statement of account. All you need to pray about is that the rate should still remain the same till that day you will print it out.

Once you print it out and the rate changes the next day, it does not affect you again. Just go and do your interview.

when your 28 days is over, you print your statement out and write on either your application form or statement of account boldly the exchange rate as at that particular day you printed it out of your account. It is the Oanda exchange rate of that day they will use.

This is why i suggested that everyone should at least add extra 500k to any money they will put in the account for 28 days.

Cheers

Guys, i wana ask a question. Whats the implication
of the new CBN policy with respect to the flexible
forex rate on exchange rate we will use in
calculating maintenance fee or other transactions?
Will it in anyone affect or change the rate on
oanda.com?
cc: OlowoB, justwise, and other gurus

Very good question. as at now 01:04am (19/06/16) exchange rate on Oanda is 1 naira to a pound is 281.568. I will suggest that students should try and wait till next week and see what happens and monitor the exchange rate on Oanda for at least a week (also the new system employed by CBN would have been in play).

Then after a week of monitoring it, you will get an idea of how much to put in the bank. I will suggest that students add at least another 500k extra to the money that will be put in the bank because anything can happen within 28 days.

I strongly believe that the exchange rate value on Oanda cannot exceed 330 (this is based on my own forecast).

If you are a tier 4 student you must not use your husbands account even if you are a signatory. You must use your own personal account.

The best deal is.....Tell your husband to transfer the money into your account for 28days. That is what they want. Your own personal account.

Good day house, heading to university of Huddersfield this September for my MSc. Please av got a few questions to ask

1. What is this NHS surcharge am hearing about, is it compulsory one pays for it?, if yes how much will it cost me?
2. Am planning to travel down with £800, will that be enough for atleast my first 2 months(accommodation/feeding)? Heard huddersfield is not an expensive city
3. Heard d current visa fee for tier 4 students is $499, hope am right.

Your questions have been answered already but i am more interested in what happens after 2 months when the money is exhausted, what is actually your plan? can you share it so at least people on this forum will guide you appropriately. Please ask as many questions as possible here and don't make assumptions.

On the other hand, i think £800 should last you for two months based on two assumptions (1) That you will bring food stuffs from Nigeria which should last you for 2 months (2) Accommodation will be cheap like you said in huddersfield.

Accommodation + bills for 2 months = £640 (lets say at £320 for each month)

Toiletries and other petty things = Try and not spend more than £60 for the 2 months (since you are on a tight budget)

2 months bus pass (you will need this for transport ) = budget at least £100 (£50 for each month)

You can check sites such as Gumtree to have an idea of the price for accommodation. If i am less busy, i can help you check it and then post it here later on.

@dynamitehimself (you go fear username grin)

As an undergraduate student coming to UK, i will strongly advise you use your first 3 months in facing your studies squarely. The reason for this is your main purpose for coming is your studies and getting a good grade is the best which will help you later on in life. every other thing i discuss here are just jobs to pass the time, make some few bucks and survive as a student. The main goal is to be making billions in the future.

As for the SIA badge, any student can do it. If you are masters or undergraduate does not matter.

As for transferring money as a student from naija to UK, honestly i do not know how the current set of students are doing it. If i get anything useful, i will post it here.

other jobs you can do as a student...... let me talk about cash or side jobs

kpeke (i don't know if i got the spelling right): This job is mostly done by benin and delta guys here in UK. They stay in pub or club toilets and will be selling or offering the guys who come to the toilet to have a perfume sprayed on them for a token. If you happen to stay in a busy pub or club, you can be making about £500 pounds monthly and the club or pub owner will still pay you stipends weekly.

Barbing: bro can you barb? if you can, i can assure you that you can be getting at least your bus pass money monthly if you can barb well. when i was in Nigeria, i am sure Teebilz had nothing on me when it comes to regular shaping or haircut but since i got here, i barb only once in a month. You can be barbing for your fellow students for a cheap price.

Electrical works and painting: These are also cash jobs if you know how to do them well. My bro wanted to paint his house of recent (a 3 bedroom apartment) and he was charged £320. When he told me, i said lets check youtube and paint it ourselves. So we ended up doing it ourselves.

Minder: This is a job for females. You can be taking care of people's children for a fee. Trust me, people are looking for minders like mad here in UK.

All the jobs i mentioned above is not all but that is what i can say for now.

How would you get customers for the jobs? For someone who has nobody here in UK, the church is the place to be. That was why i advised you to go to church every Sunday once you arrive in UK (be an active member). Once people start seeing you regularly, trust me, you will start getting connections.

Please all students coming to study in UK, please note, it is almost impossible to get a job that will pay your school fees. I always advise students to have their school fees guaranteed before coming here . You can still survive here trying to get a job that will pay your accommodation, bills and other stuff but not fees.

Gaxx01:

Gud day bro
I recently got an offer for a masters in public health at university of west England, pls what is the possibility of getting a part time job while studying, living standard and can one stay back in UK after studies to start a career/Job?

In addition to what have been said up there, you will definitely get part time jobs to keep body and soul together so far you are not been selective and you go to church or mosque regularly. Speak to your church members, they will show you the way.

Having said that, Uk is not the best place to come if your plan is to stay back. Honestly, why would students pay £11,000 and cannot stay back for at least a year or 2 to get job experinece? what is the benefit of coming and spending that huge amount? There is no need deceiving ourselves (most people want to stay back at least to get experience), if your plan is to study and stay back, bro please try Canada (although Canada's visa process is much more difficult than that of UK).

Don't get me wrong, UK is lovely, peaceful, i have never heard a gun shot here in my life and all that (i won't lie to you, i love UK) but i feel they are just exploiting students currently. If you will not be attending at least the top 30 schools in UK, studying at least a very well sought after course (please not business or art related courses)with a good result, the chances of staying back here after school is very very low except of course you will proceed and do PHD (that is what most students are doing now). Infant what the home office wants is just for you to come study and go back.

Here is the deal, if your father is rich, then UK is good for you cos within 1 year, you will finish your masters and go back home(you probably already have a job waiting for you) but if you come from an average family and you don't want to come back to Nigeria (at least not after your masters) you can do masters here in UK and apply for another masters in canada or even USA while in UK. It will cost you another money but it is easier to get a Canadian visa here in UK than in Nigeria (this is based on my own empirical evidence). In canada, after your masters (usually 2 years, you will be given another 2 years to work which you can use to gain experience before coming back (let me whisper to you, it is even easier to get canadian PR than Uk PR currently if you want to go this route)

So bro, look around you, most young guys now in Niaja have a Uk masters. What will stand you out is the job experience you will have after study. can you get it here in Uk? well, pray very hard.

Alternatively, if your mind is made up on coming to UK, then you can be doing volunteer jobs while studying so as to gain work experience(you will likely not be paid) or during your masters here in UK, start applying for internship programs in USA. There is really no point getting masters abroad without job experience (this is my opinion).

Finally, some people still get jobs after their masters but it is becoming very very difficult day by day and i just have to be honest with you bro. All the best.
