Family / Re: White Wedding Or Traditional Marriage Which One Do Yo Prefere? by oludashmi(f): 11:55am On Feb 27, 2012
N101:

I have yet to see the relevance of a traditional wedding when an introduction will do. And I'm with Freiburg, the only people I hear refer the 'white weddings' are Africans.

The important thing is the marriage. As far as I'm concerned I only need one ceremony that is legally binding and that is it.

You are really ignorant (not insulting you).
Did you hear the way it is pronounced? Introduction!!. . . this is a way for the immediate family of both parties to meet and know each other before the traditional wedding day where the dowry is paid. Dowry is not paid at the introduction, neither is it paid in the church. And the dowry is the most important part of any union both before God and Man, even if it is paid in the sitting room with witnesses and no ceremony is conducted at all!

realiforj:

For me both is important. the traditional marriage is expected to be done first as its where the dowry is being paid.  the white wedding is key as a christian and a child of God,one needs to do this in God presence and house for his protection over your marriage.  Lets not forgat that God himself is the author of marriage.

Your first sentence was very right but you missed it at the boldened statement. . .I will explain
As its name signifies, the white wedding is the culture/system/way (including court) that a white man gets married. And it doesnt have to be in the church.
Before the advent of civilization, our weddings used to be in the traditional way only but white wedding became a part of us due to colonisation and our beliefs that white men things are superior.
Another reason white wedding became a part of us is the unavoidable fact that we are a very religious people and the Church as a whole has derailed from its foundation.

Lastly, its true that God instituted marriage but he did not institute a type of marriage. What he instituted was dowry and witnesses from both parties, not even the ceremony. We originated the ceremony based on our cultures. And having your wedding in the church does not guarantee protection or lasting. Check newspapers or go to customary courts weekly and be convinced. Wherever you decide to pay your dowry, the presence of God is there and a union is sealed!

You can change it to one of your father's native names if you really wish to. Although, it binds and makes generations traceable.
But like someone said, it doesnt make you more Christian or better than your siblings. It can can even serve as evangelism.

Ileke-IdI:

so we were just having this conversation today (not about our marriage o) . Talking about compromise.

I think in anything, I should get to decide this.

I dont care about white weddings, tbh. I want a traditional wedding, with a pastor and a court certificate, etc. Anything that makes it legal and makes sure that I get half of anything (incase he fcuks up).

But traditional wedding is the only one that matters to me.

Gbam!! at boldened.

Traditional wedding is the real wedding. Its the type acceptable before God and man cos this is where dowry is paid and both parties are represented.

White wedding (Court): Is binding legally and according to the laws of the land

White wedding (church or mosque): No dowry is paid here, which makes it less than the traditional wedding. This is just to expand the ceremony.

Culture / Re: Shrines And Justice In Igbo Culture. by oludashmi(f): 9:32am On Nov 24, 2011
Andre Uweh:

No one here has stated that Ndigbo are all born again christians, neither has anyone claimed that they are all christians. It seems you have lost your reading glasses again.
No one bows to those relics in Igboland. Ndigbo has always worshipped God before the advent of christianity. Shrines are not places Ndigbo worship God. They can worship God anywhere.
The purpose of those shrines mostly in Igboland is for justice attainment. One may find out about strange occurences also.
But you have to be careful when you visit the shrines as they are sacred.
Note that I did not start this thread to lecture anyone about the activities of shrines in Igboland, but to debate on the way forward for justice in Igboland as congregational prayers and modern day court judiciary systems have been slow in acting.
I did not start this thread that am an authority in that field but to learn also from fellow Ndigbo.

You ehn? You can never disappoint me! grin grin
The purpose of shrines is to bring justice. Not to kill or rituals cheesy cheesy cheesy
Igbos are all christians, they are not prone to adultery and sins, infact they were all born speaking in tongues. . .that has always been the self-deceptive messages of your brothers.
Since you started this thread to debate on the way forward in your populous shrines amidst your countless sins, pls establish more shrines to fulfill your purpose. I'm sure many of us will be generous enough to name your new shrines without charges. wink
Take care sha.

Aigbofa:

I thought you are all devout catholics. So, you visit the shrine on Saturday and attend mass on Sunday?

grin grin grin grin grin grin No they are all born again Christians and do not commit sin/adultery

Andre Uweh:

Not all Ndigbo are catholics. Some belong to the Anglican communion, Methodist, Saviours Evangelical mission, E.C.W.A, Cherubim, Igbo trad religion etc.
Note that Ndigbo do not worship wood, stone and other relics in those shrines. It seems in your own part of the world, it is the other way round.

Oh, so they worship the almighty God in the shrines lipsrsealed. Thank God we now know.
What about all the stones, woods and other objects that are being bowed for and painted in colours, labelled with feathers or greased in palm oil in all your shrines? Please give us a public relations lecture on them as regards alaigbo.

The fact that this is generally known but the promiscuity criticism is usually in the direction of Yoruba (coming from Igbo which to me is quite comical considering they are generally not immune to promiscuity) should tell you something. Basically turning a blind eye to their own bad eggs while focusing their searchlight on Yorubas who they want to hate. Yorubas call it "a wa wi" - fault finding. Mind you, I know many Igbo people who are not this self-deluding and it's basically because they are enlightened; as opposed to "bush".
You are very right.
igbos on NL are only good at PR, but their public relations will only be consumed by deluded fellows too
I have also seen several igbos with multiple children frm different mamas but I dont take it as a tribal thing instead I generalise on men

Anybody could have influenced anybody cos we all originated frm somewhere and have accommodated foreigners at one time or the other. What matters is that we all have our known ethnic cultures and traditions within the country called Nigeria and the poster is only talking about inter-tribal influence at the present not in the 18th century.

My dear, there is nothing isolated about tuface's except you have not spent sometime in Benue before or lived with them. Tuface case is no news among the idomas. . .he is a typical ogoja man. Pls do your statistics among the Yoruba men and get back to me.

mbatuku2:

There seem to be a bit of exaggeration in your claims. I think you are blowing things out of proportion. In the real world, most Igbos dont feel alienated from each other, save for some groups like Mbaise, some groups in Ebonyi, etc that are generally derided.

It's the same way the Yorubas despise the Ijebu and Egba people. It happens in every society, and doesn't affect the unity of a people at large.
Dude. . . you are not right at the boldened. If a Yoruba says anything about the boldened, its just for a sec, it holds no water cos the same person is ever ready to marry from that side. So when using ethnic differentiation, avoid involving Yorubas and Hausas, they are way more united than the igbos.

At the same time, you neednt use Yorubas or other ethnic group before agreeing or disagreeing with a point, just give your point to look at how you guys cant sort the identity probs not comparism.

ChinenyeN:

Why use them as an example at all? They don't exemplify the 'Igbo situation' in any way, other than the fact that we are apparently lodged here in this construct called Nigeria. A better example would have been the Ibibio groups, and even the Ijo sef, but never Yoruba and Hausa.

Why even look for a reference to begin with? Can people's points not stand in their own right?
Your points are usually matured

The same way Nigeria/Africa's first indigenous made car ( Z-900)  was sabotaged because the inventor(Dr. Ezekiel Izuogu) was from the east.instead of we appreciating what we have, find a way of improving on them, rather what you get is sabotage because the inventor is not your person, it very unfortunate.

They even went ahead to invade his lab and stole all his designs and drawings, till today nobody has heard about it, NIGERIA I CRY FOR YOU.YOU ARE A SHAME TO YOUR CHILDREN

we as Nigerians did not appreciate him but the foreigners especially the south African government was desperate to make sure the inventor came over there to establish himself there and also label the car as a South African car but for patriotism the man refused.

Permit me to say you are a buffalo
You said he was not appreciated cos he is from the east, pls tell me the number of Nigerian inventions that have been appreciated by the Nigerian government. You started a thread few hours back about Nigeria/tribalism/Igbo. . . .but here you are again with all focus at the east. I know we all love ourselves and we want this nation to be great, but that can only be achieved by constructively proffering solutions to our common problems.
And as for 2015, am not saying these not because am Igbo but for the fact that I am a Nigerian that believes the right thing should be done.
By the end of 2015 all region must have represented Nigeria at the presidency except the igbo which is a major ethnic group , it will be right and just to allow a Nigerian president of an igbo extraction to lead Nigeria if the igbos are Nigerians and also if we want a one Nigeria.
Denying the igbo the ticket will amount to telling them they are not Nigerians but foreigners (Biafrans)
IMO the igbos of today should not be again be made to pay for the mistakes of the past generation

How do you know we all love ourselves? From all indication, you are first an igbo man before a Nigerian? You started well but ended horribly. . .if you believe in unity, love as you claim why will it bother you who becomes president in 2015 or did you you start the thread deliberately to seek attention and later derailed it to an igbo 2015 campaign

manchy7531:

If you read through, my repetition of igbo's ascension to power as you have put it is not because of me being igbo,i feel it is right for the sake of unity sense of belonging.

if i where to be of another tribe, i will do the same.like i did for Jonathan even though i suspected he was not a good Nigerian presidential material.

i voted for him to give him and his people that sense of belonging.

We are the youths of today and the leaders of the future, i believe it is high time we stopped following the footsteps of our past leader.

they played politics of greed, marginalization, injustice, corruption, inequality, nepotism. All these must stop.we clamor for SNC.That can start on NL cos NL is a good avenue to dialogue rather than promote hatred for each other.

We the youths must be progressive and not destructive in out thought and approach to issues.OUR LEADERS DID IT WRONG,IT'S OURS TO GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME

I LOVE NIGERIA

Imagine your level of tribalism even before joining NL. . . .you know someone is not good for a nation of over 150million but you voted him for the sake of ethnicism. If Goodluck end up not achieving any tangible thing in 4yrs, you would have sent to an early grave millions of Nigerians and would have destroyed millions of destinies on the ground of ethnic group.

Stop lieing, you do not love Nigeria, you love only ibo land and ibo presidency.
