A Nigerian medical researcher , Prof . Ayodele Adeleye, on Monday claimed to have a cure for the ravaging COVID -19 pandemic . Adeleye also claimed that his cure had been subjected to scientific proof , adding that he was ready to treat five coronavirus positive patients free of charge to prove the efficacy of his treatment . Adeleye, a former lecturer in Microbiology and Principal Staff, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital , Shika Zaria, in Kaduna State, spoke to journalists at a press conference held in Kaduna on Monday where he announced his breakthrough . He said his three -day coronavirus cure discovery was so certain and assured that if adopted, the current lockdown in the country and the world over due to COVID- 19 pandemic , would be a thing of the past. “ If the government brings in five people with COVID - 19 , I will treat them for free right in front of your cameras . It will take between three and five days to cure COVID- 19 patient , completely . “ Animals are not susceptible to COVID -19 . The only luck we have is that, someone who had COVID -19 , we brought and treated was cured. “ About five people , including my former students who knew me with research have been calling and asking if I have something to cure COVID - 19 . “ One of the patients was having breathing problems already and he took the treatment in 10 minutes he was already getting better. “ We told him to keep coming every five days until he was okay . We told him to go for test and he was okay. In fact , he suggested we hold a press briefing and that is why we are here . He would have been here but based on his personality , he is shy . ” https://punchng.com/im-ready-to-cure-five-covid-19-patients-free-prof/

The State Government notes with deep concern the second index case. This development has once again, reinforced the need to deepen our collective efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ondo State COVID-19 Response Team has reported that the second index case having travelled from Lagos to Ondo State must give the Government greater concern to avoid community transmission. Against the backdrop of the above, the Ondo State Government has directed the cancellation of the special concession granted Churches across the State to celebrate the Easter Sunday/Service. This decision was taken after due consultations with the leadership of the Christain Association of Nigeria(CAN). All measures and steps taken in respect of COVID-19 still remain in force. COVID-19: CONFIRMED CASE HAS LITTLE OR NO EXPANSION POTENTIAL-AKEREDOLU ... as Gov rolls out efforts to contain virus, calls for calm and vigilance Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said the confirmed index case recorded in the state on Friday has little or no expansion potential. The Governor, who spoke during a state broadcast, explained that the confirmed case, who is a military officer, arrived the state about two weeks ago from India on an official assignment. Governor Akeredolu, who said he had discussed with the Brigade Commander, further explained that on his arrival in the state, the military officer placed himself on isolation until he developed symptoms which turned out to be a positive case after test. The Governor said: "When you trace the history of the officer, you will know that it leads us to little or no potential expansion. He came and put himself in isolation, the Brigade Commander spoke with me and confirmed this to me. All we have to do to prevent the spread of the virus has been done with this man in self isolation. "I want to talk to our people and allay their fears, there is no need to panic. This has been contained within a room. Remember I took the lead in subjecting myself to test because I felt I have been out of the state." While rolling out the efforts put in place by his administration to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, Governor Akeredolu said: "We have strengthened our precautionary measures, we closed our schools and sent our children home, we suspended public gatherings and advised against religious gatherings. "We have scaled down the activities in our Government House and Secretariat and we have asked the civil servants from level 1 - 12 to stay at home. We have also closed our markets. "After that, we have now gone ahead to fumigate our markets and motor parks. We have also directed a lock down of our borders when we found out that a number of people from neighbouring states were moving in. "We have also decided to assist our students by having special educational broadcasts. We have also set up special relief distribution and respond fund committees." Governor Akeredolu noted that the committee on relief distribution will operate, purchase and share foodstuffs through the local government areas. While thanking the people of the state for keeping faith with government on the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the Governor said the one confirmed case is not unexpected, adding that the people must not be too anxious and should continue to practice social distancing and cleanliness by washing their hands with water and soap. This is an uncommon Grace Government and indeed, the people must not take for granted. As a way of thanking God and seeking His face for this immeasurable Grace and continuous Favour, Government hereby declares a 3-day period of fasting and prayers commencing from Thursday, 2nd to Saturday, 4th April for Ondo State and the country at large. The senators have agreed to donate half of their March salaries to the fight against the spread of coronavirus in the country. They are however still consulting among themselves on the amount to cut from their own portion of the N 128 bn National Assembly budget approved for the year . Investigations by our correspondent on Sunday revealed that the senators have started sending half of their salaries to a dedicated account . The account it was learnt was being coordinated by the Senate Committee on House Services. The Senate Minority Leader , Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, confirmed to our correspondent on Sunday that his colleagues had started donating half of their March salaries . He said , “ We’ ve already given out 50 per cent of our salaries like ministers, ( to government ) amidst other individual efforts to our constituents . ” But the Leader of the Senate , Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, told our correspondent on Sunday that the senators were still consulting on the matter . He , however , disclosed that the senators would not do exactly what the ministers have done . He said , “The senators are still consulting . The result of our consultations will be made open tomorrow ( today ) Monday. “ We are not doing exactly what the ministers have done . ” Abdullahi also said that the leadership of the National Assembly had not agreed on when to reconvene and review the 2020 national budget . A senator , however , told our correspondent on condition of anonymity on Sunday that the part of the sacrifice that members of the Senate wanted to make was to reduce their own portion of the N 128 bn National Assembly budget . He said , “ We have agreed to slash the National Assembly budget for this year in line with the current reality . It is certain that the Federal Government will reduce the N 10 . 59tn national budget because of the reduction in the revenue to fund it. So , we are reducing our own too . ” The President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd. ) had proposed N 125 bn to the federal parliament, but the lawmakers added N 3 bn to it. Nigeria’ s 43 ministers had last week announced the donation of 50 per cent of their March 2020 salaries to support the Federal Government ’ s efforts to combat the COVID -19 pandemic in the country. The National Examinations Council is currently verifying its workers and examination officers in its bid to fish out those in possession of forged certificates and to sanitise the examination system . The Staff Certificate Verification Committee, which was set up by the acting Registrar of the council, Mr Abubakar Gana, has a mandate to verify and query the certificates being used by NECO workers . The registrar set up the committee, headed by the Director of Human Resource Management , Mr Mustapha Abdul in 2019 , in line with the council’ s policy of zero tolerance for corruption , with the registrar directing that the committee should fish out any worker using fake certificates . The council told our correspondent on Wednesday that about 157 members of staff of NECO had cases to answer concerning their certificates. It added that they were invited for further screening by the Verification Committee . It was also discovered that 89 workers had been indicted by NECO and confirmed to be using fake certificates. The council’ s Governing Board has directed that the 89 workers are not only dismissed from NECO , but also their files should be transferred to the police and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission for prosecution. Of the 89 dismissed workers , NECO said on Wednesday that most of them are Executive Officers and General Duties personnel . Meanwhile , five of them are Chief Examination Officers , four are Principal Examination Officers while six are Senior Examination Officers . The first phase of the big stick wielded by the council started on November 15 , 2019 , when the Governing Board directed that 70 of the 89 workers be dismissed and quit from work henceforth . NECO ’ s Verification Committee had contacted the schools and tertiary institutions which the affected workers claimed they attended and found out that they did not obtain such school ’ s certificates. “ The committee contacted the schools which the affected workers claimed to have attended but the institutions denied them . On completion of the assignment, the committee submitted its findings to the NECO management which forwarded it to the NECO Governing Board. “ At its 17 th extra- ordinary meeting , the Governing Board vetted the report and approved the dismissal of the affected staff . The acting Registrar has no tolerance for corruption and is sanitising the system in line with the President ’ s anti - corruption stance, ” the NECO Head of Information and Public Relations Division , Mr Azeez Sani , explained . The second phase of the verification exercise took place in February 2020 and 19 workers were found to be in possession of fake certificates . The Governing Board of the council, led by the Chairman , Dr Abubakar Saddique , reconvened on February 25 for its 52 nd Regular meeting and approved the dismissal of the affected staff . “ The NECO ’ s Governing Board approved the dismissal . The Staff Certificate Verification Committee carried out its assignment diligently by inviting some workers with questionable credentials to appear before it, during which the affected personnel attested that their certificates were forged . The certificate verification exercise which is ongoing is aimed at sanitising the system ,” Sani added . The council told our correspondent on Wednesday that over 1 ,000 workers had been screened and the 89 dismissed personnel would be prosecuted by the police and the ICPC . The council said, “ The screening is for all NECO workers nationwide , whether at state level, in the zonal offices or the headquarters . The details of those found with issues of falsification of results or certificates have been given to the ICPC and the police for prosecution. “ It is difficult to predict the duration of the exercise , since the responses from institutions are gradual and the concerned members are only invited for screening if there are issues raised on them by their institutions . “ Of the 89 workers , five are Chief Examination Officers , four are Principal Examination Officers while six are Senior Examination Officers . There is no Assistant Director , Deputy Director or Director found to have falsified results or certificates so far . ” Our correspondent learnt that NECO would not beam its searchlight on only its workers . The council also planned to investigate students of various tertiary institutions who used forged NECO certificates to gain admission to the schools . On March 2 , 2020 , the council received four students from the University of Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory , who were taken to court for allegedly forging their NECO certificates . The four suspects reportedly used the NECO results to gain admission , but they were found out when the council embarked on a screening exercise at the university. The screening exercise is not limited to the University of Abuja; it is ongoing in some major tertiary institutions in the country. The council handed the indicted students , who have also been dismissed by the university, were handed by the council to the police and they were arraigned at the FCT Magistrate Court in Wuse , in the first week of March 2020 . Apart from the war on forged certificates, the council registrar , Gana, has also sought the partnership of the Department of State Services to curb the rising cases of malpractices during the conduct of its school examinations . On January 20 , the NECO Board Chairman , Saddique, and the registrar , Gana, met with the DSS Director - General , Yusuf Bichi, in Abuja, on the modalities of deploying operatives to curb such malpractices. The DSS DG noted after the meeting that his department would look into the request so as to ensure the credibility of NECO examinations . Apart from the DSS , the council also has been delisting schools which are found to be culpable in the offence of examination malpractices. In October 2019 , NECO announced the delisting of three schools in Katsina , Kebbi and Oyo states for two years over their involvement in collusion and mass cheating . It said that in its 2019 June and July Senior Secondary Certificate Examination , the cases of malpractices stood at over 40 ,000 . The registrar who announced the delisting noted that NECO had acquired 8, 000 biometric verification machines but it would still need more biometric verification devices to serve its over 16 ,000 centres . Apart from examination malpractices , the council is also grappling with financial fraud in some schools where fees exceeding the Federal Government -approved sum of N 9 ,850 are being demanded from pupils registering for the 2020 Senior School Certificate Examination . The council said it had written to the Commissioners of Education in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory , informing them of the extortion going on in their schools despite the directive from the Federal Government . The NECO registrar , Gana, had last week warned that the council was monitoring the activities of schools and would take serious actions on infractions and extortions of the NECO candidates. “ Not quite up to a month , we wrote to all the commissioners of education, highlighting that some schools , both public and private, were demanding extra fees from candidates . While the NECO fee itself is N 9, 850 , some are even charging N 20 ,000 in the name of administrative charges. “ Most of these schools are miracle centres and what they do there is perpetrate malpractice. Candidates who are lazy and don ’ t have confidence can go to the extent of paying N 50, 000 to register so that they can have their way. We are on their case and we will sanction them, ” he said . https://punchng.com/neco-sends-89-workers-to-icpc-for-certificate-forgery/ |

My dear good people of Ondo state, as you are aware, the world is currently experiencing an outbreak of corona virus (COVID-19) infection. This is a highly infectious disease spreading all over the world. The disease is easily transmitted from one person to another. Our country Nigeria has not been spared of this attack. In the last few weeks, the fear of its presence in our country has been confirmed. The major symptoms of this viral attack are fever, cough, sore throat, sneezing, runny nose and difficulty with breathing. Any individual with these symptoms especially those who have recently travelled to areas where there is a serious outbreak should embark on self-isolation for a minimum of 14 days. Such individuals should also in the interest of our corporate existence, report in any of our healthcare facilities nearest to them or call any of our emergency lines that will be released for assistance if they develop any of the symptoms. On our part, this administration had taken the following steps to ensure that the health system is ready to manage the situation effectively in collaboration with the federal government and our development partners. These steps include: Equipping the state infectious disease hospital as a treatment center for the disease. Upgrading the state disease surveillance network to be able to identify cases and ensure proper community surveillance Roll out a sustained media campaign on the COVID-19 infection. Ensure a seamless collaboration with federal government and other development partners To further strengthen our capacity to respond effectively to this emergency, we have set up a high level inter-ministerial committee to coordinate state’s response to the COVID-19 challenge. The committee which is chaired by the hon commissioner for health, has members cutting across relevant institutions and MDAS. The main term of reference of this committee is to activate, coordinate and drive the state response protocols. The committee will engage all stakeholders and explore all means possible to curtail the threat of covid-19. In furtherance of this, we have also directed the closure of all primary and secondary schools as well tertiary institutions in the state as from Friday 20th, March, 2020 until further notice. This measure is to harvest our children into the safety net for proper monitoring and care. There is no doubt that this global pandemic poses a real challenge to all nations, yet if we all collaborate effectively, we will overcome it successfully. One major advantage that our state has is the experience and expertise we have developed over the years from our fight against Lassa fever and other infections. We believe this will place us in good stead at this critical period. It is therefore important for members of the public to remain calm, avoid panic and spreading of inaccurate information. We therefore wish to use this opportunity to call on all residents of Ondo state to obey and observe the simple, time tested and internationally accepted precautionary measures to fight this debilitating virus. We urge us all to fully embrace the hand washing exercise at every interval of our daily activities. We must avoid hand shaking and unnecessary social embrace. We must reduce or where possible, postpone, until further notice, ceremonies and other social gatherings. We urge us to avoid staying in overcrowded areas and avoid any unnecessary travels outside the state. It is important we engage in improved self and family hygiene as well as mobilise our community service providers including traders, drivers, butchers, bank workers, health workers to make use of face mask to cover the mouth and the nose when engaging in their daily activities. To ensure that all measures stated earlier are totally successful, we hereby task our community leaders, political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, heads of educational institutions, Nigerian medical association, association of general medical practitioners and other health workers, leaders of traders association, women groups, youth groups, transport unions and others to urgently commence a deliberate and comprehensive mobilization of their members to observe these precautionary measures. Please let us take these measures seriously so as to wage the war against corona virus together and win. My dear people, contrary to the misinformation and mischief set to create panic among our people, I wish to stress that no death has been recorded in Ondo state on account of corona virus so far. The situation as at today is that a suspected case is under intense observation and comprehensive test. This process of surveillance and management currently ongoing in this isolated case is part of the standard procedure in dealing with infectious disease outbreaks. We urge us to ignore the unauthorized and unconfirmed statements. Every epoch in history comes with its own challenges. We believe this corona virus pandemic is another test of our resolve to preserve our existence, we will win by the grace of almighty god. As I end this speech, let me reassure you again that Ondo state government will do everything and all things in its power, knowledge and capability to protect and preserve our well-being. It is our duty and commitment to ensure that Ondo state people live a healthy and fulfilled life. I thank you and may God bless every resident of this state. https://citadelng.com.ng/2020/03/19/governor-akeredolus-broadcast-on-coronavirus-pandemics/

The scheduled hearing in the appeal by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole was today put off by the Court of Appeal, Abuja. This has created another stalemate in the party as warring factions have to wait for the appellate court’s decision in a yet to be decided date. The court had, last week sent notices of hearing to parties in the appeal. But, when parties got to court today, a panel of three Justices led by Justice Stephen Adah sat to hear other cases. The panel later rose, with a promise that another panel will be reconstituted to hear Oshiomole’s appeal. Parties were however, taken aback when, rather than having a new panel, a female official of the court announced to a packed courtroom that the court has elected to hear Oshiomole’s appeal on a later date to be communicated to parties later. Oshiomhole and his supporters, who have been in court since a little over 8 am, are currently meeting with their team of lawyers on what next steps to take. As he exited the courtroom, with his supporters behind, Oshiomhole told journalists that he would await the court’s decision in the case. Oshiomhole’s appeal is against an earlier judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which among others, restrained him acting as the National Chairman of the APC. The inaugural Premier League Hall of Fame ceremony has been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Two players were set to be inducted at Thursday's event in London and a shortlist of nominees for future inclusion, voted for by fans, was also to be announced. The Premier League is yet to announce plans for revealing their names. All elite football in Britain has been suspended until at least 3 April as a result of the spread of coronavirus. Premier League clubs are set to meet on Thursday to discuss potential ways forward in the wake of Uefa, European football's governing body, making its own plans clear on Tuesday. The setting up of the Premier League Hall of Fame was announced last month. Candidates must have retired and only a player's Premier League career is considered. A separate English Football Hall of Fame has existed since 2002 and is housed at the National Football Museum. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51905290?iorg_service_id_internal=624173547714020%3BAfqsw0W86fhVkvbs

The first picture of Ronaldinho as a prisoner have been revealed after a court in Paraguay refused the former Barcelona player bail as he posed too much of a 'flight risk.' On Thursday the Brazil legend was arrested in Paraguay for allegedly trying to enter the country using a fake passport, along with his brother, with the documentation claiming the duo were from the country they were trying to enter. Now the first image of Ronaldinho the prisoner has been released by Unicanal journalist Hernan Rodriguez, who tweeted the picture. The judge made the ruling to keep Ronaldinho in confinement on Saturday under the belief that he would flee the country before the trail if he were allowed to go. However the 39-year-old was left in a police holding cell rather than transferred to a jail because of his profile as a footballer. Both Ronaldinho and his brother are due to appear in front of the judge again on Monday and lawyer Sergio Queiroz will ask for their release back to Brazil. Queiroz has claimed the former player didn't know the passports were faked, telling Yahoo Sports, "Ronaldinho did not commit a crime because he did not know that the passport they gave him was faked." The judge explained that the maximum time for the investigation period is six months, giving the prospect of the former player spending that much time in prison, though it may not take that long. Appeals for house arrest were rejected because there wasn't enough information on the house that the brothers were meant to be staying in. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportbible.com/football/foul-play-first-picture-of-ronaldinho-as-a-prisoner-in-paraguay-20200309.amp.html
