Does it really have to be nursing, everywhere i turn and see Africans, it's either he/she is studying nursing or he/she is a nurse already. Beginning to sound cliché
EgunMogaji2:
Nursing RN degree and then port into Hospital Information Systems with Bsc.

You’ll never want for money.

IMO, Uber/Lyft is for side hustle generally to help pay some bills or whatever but I believe there is nothing like side hustle to at least the Nigerians I have met here during my days of factory Jobs, All side hustle here na FULL TIME HUSTLE..

Mr A, we lived in the same neighborhood in Nigeria. During early months of arrival, He worked at the airport through this agency, quit and started Uber/Lyft.. Now, He built house for Parents, bought cars for them, make trip to Nigeria twice a year, been to Europe back to back, going to school ALL ON THIS UBER/LYFT.. To him, he is living a fulfilled life, do I agree with him all he's doing? Capital YES as long as you keep making the MONEY, gives you free time to do whatever you want to do..

Mr B is working $10 job at a restaurant, has N100,000 in savings in nigeria account and has a car(Camry 2007) in his name. We have told him several times to quit his Job and look for better opportunities but in his eyes, he is living is own american dream and this is someone saying he wants to buy a house in the US.

Mr C is doing delivery for DoorDash/Grubhub. On the average, he makes average of $700 a week and he is contented with that..

I have talked to Mr D here on this forum that makes $110k/pa he is even wanting to earn more

I have known people that quit their jobs to drive Lyft/Uber and are doing well. it depends on what works for everybody.

3 people very close to me makes at least $4000 a month driving lyft and all they just do is watchout for peak times, do their thing and go back home to relax.

Now to me, Can I drive Lyft/Uber as full time JOB, Yes because technically its not a full time job.You drive in the morning, rest in the afternoon and drive and evenings. Lobatan!!

As a matter of fact, Once I start school, I will port to Lyft as my account is very much active. I go to school in the mornings, drive lyf in the evening. The idea of the school is to work with your brain cos you cant drive lyft for life, You will get tired at a point, but while it is very hot, then you got to do what you got to do.

Finally, some people with papers are not even making money as people without papers.

As for the mexicans, Mehn, those people are german machines. They work as if tomorrow no dey.

Imagine! Not eben a Ghanian.... That's why we are so easy to prey upon and to break. If something happens to A Mexican or an Asian hundreds rise to help.... But our own, even your roomate/family will run
SirWahl1:
Let me put this out there too. Recently African Americans has always wanted to visit Africa as a way to connect back to their roots.

My local church just had over 100 people take a 2 weeks trip to Ghana. Guess who organized the trip a white man

There are lots of ideas and business opportunities out there, but we need a structure to be able to tap into most of this things. There is also the minority rule when it comes to awarding contract.
Our individualism won’t let us tap into this

Sir,.. I read this an i couldn't stop clapping... It's annoying me when i get to my fellow country men and the high drive/vision they have is "Na to drive uber/lyft o"..... Wtf❗the idea of this things is side hustle but no we don turn am to career...

This mexican, indians and Chinese don't work extraordinary or do what we can't do... I remember one time i tried picking up a care giver job the plave is owned by a Nigeria, the pay was even below minimum wage and this America (akata) walks in looking for a job and this my country women wherr offering her an admjn position i just shook my head.... We are so divided that I'm beginning to think in worst in yhe diaspora than back home

SirWahl1:
This is exactly what I am talking about. I remember when I just came to US and the first hustling gigs I got, it was all Mexicans and Latinos.

Once one of them gets into a place, they immediately flood the place with their kinsmen.
Why is the Nigerian community different.

A white woman gave me my first true job in Chicago. The support system the Arabs, Chinese , Indians and Mexicans enjoy is literally non existent in the Nigeria community or even the African community.

The African grocery shop in my neighborhood is ran by Mexicans, The weave and African fabric shop is ran by Indians .

They are able to do these seemingly big things because they pull resources and ideas together.

We are better than drinking and attending parties together or driving Uber and lyft

In our individualism? NO. I'm actually saying the opposite here, this idea of putting our fellow Nigerians at arms length is doing us much bad than good. And like you said it because of instances, senerios that has happened again and again, true! The thing is wherever we go you then to divided ourself if before other people do like we do back home.... My take is coming together as a community will do us much good.
SirWahl1:
Are you suggesting we continue in our individualism? We are a very hard working ethnic group with lots of cash in our community but with the least vested interest in terms of building business.

I think we should begin to do things differently or try again where others have failed

Trust me i understand you, and I'm not new. I'm just saying this one of the reasons why the black community won't grow
PaulSimon2020:
And that mindset is as a result of what has happened over and over again here. I assume you are some what new here, be watchful.
Travel / Re: U.S Based>> Choosing A Career Path In America<<< by oluwarichie(m): 5:08am On Jul 16, 2019
Hmmm, word.... Very true
... But again this kinda reason is why we don't have the kinda community the mexicans or the asian have........ The fear of the next nigerian next to me is a bad person., don't get me wrong i totally understand what you're saying, i just know that mindset break us as people of common value, if you get my drift
PaulSimon2020:
Be careful while at that, some Nigerians here are better kept at arm's distance!

Na so most of una dey Chicago dey hide abi? Well, me i dey look for new friends ooo if una dey Chicago, kindly PM me and lets meet.

OP, i will advice not to rush into making decisions. I have had people saying go into IT or nursing and i'll be making cool money but my interest never lies in IT.

As for the nursing, they have crazy schedules that can really really be stressful..

I studied Engineering and I have a passion for Engineering and i am starting classes at Darley College(76th and Pulaski) this fall.

Kindly please consider your options clearly and dont rush into making decisions.
