Protesters on the platform of Global Centre for Conscious Living Against Corruption on Thursday stormed the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanding the resignation of Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the EFCC. The protesters were seen with placards which read ‘All we are saying, Magu must go’, ‘Magu must go’, among others. Speaking with journalists, Gabriel Nwamba, leader of the protesters, said the EFCC under Magu had several cases of human right violation. He called on the federal government to replace Magu with a more competent person who would “work towards the realisation the Buhari administration’s goal in fighting against corruption”. “The mode of operation of the EFCC under Magu has shown several cases of gross human right violation. The fact that the EFCC speaks too soon to the extent of suspecting people on the pages of newspapers is against the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria,” Nwamba said. “Magu is now operating under another constitution. “In the interest of peace and respect for the tenets of modern democracy hinged on the rule of law, civil society organisations and indeed many Nigerians who support President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade hereby, as a matter of urgency, request the authorities concerned to immediately remove Ibrahim Magu as acting chairman of the EFCC and replace him with more competent Nigerian citizen for the realisation of the present administration’s goal in fighting corruption.” culled from; http://omojuwa.com/2017/06/protesters-besiege-efcc-headquarters-demands-resignation-magu/

A bill proposing six months imprisonment for persons who shunt or distort queues in public places on Thursday scaled second reading at the house of representatives. Abubakar Amuda-Kannike (Kwara-APC), sponsor of the bill, while leading debate on it, said that it sought to ensure that Nigerians conducted themselves orderly in public places. Amuda-Kannike said that it was normal practice for some Nigerians to shunt or distort queues and go unpunished. He expressed worry that recent events had shown that Nigeria was on the verge of losing its cherished sense of nationalism, cultural identity and hospitality. “The bill underscores the need to re-awaken a derailed national culture by proposing disciplinary measures to guide Nigerians in their daily behaviours. “In our society today, out of total disregard for other persons, who strive to do the right thing by conducting themselves orderly in public places, a large number of Nigerians distort queues and go unpunished. “The bill if passed shall provide a starting point of value and cultural re-orientation in Nigeria,” the lawmaker said. He expressed optimism that the bill if passed, future generations would have a more sane society that would help to shape morals, principles and respect for each other in addition to adequate awareness on what constitute nationhood. He decried the prevailing level of corruption, indiscipline, disrespect to elders and the rule of law in the country. “The bill underscores the need to re-awaken the derailed national culture by proposing disciplinary measures to guide Nigerians in their daily behaviours. Any nation that is not organised cannot have rapid growth,” he said. “We should be seen as organised people from point of entry but we have accepted that anything goes. “Every school should have civic education in its curriculum to instil patriotism and orderliness in the country,” Amuda-Kannike said. Contributing to the debate, Sam Onuigbo (Abia-PDP), said that the bill would also ensure orderliness, equity, fairness and justice in the distribution of services in the country. “It will be nice for us to be seen as orderly people from the point of entry into the country,” Onuigbo said. Ayo Omidiran (Osun-APC) said, “by being orderly in all our activities, we will be transmitting good behavioural pattern to generations and this will promote a better society”. After the debate, the bill was passed for third reading through a unanimous voice vote. culled from; http://omojuwa.com/2017/06/reps-propose-bill-imprison-nigerians-jump-queues-public/

Sasha Obama, daughter of US President Barack Obama, has swapped the comforts of the White House for the counter of a seafood restaurant, US media report. The 15-year-old has taken a summer job serving food at the business in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Sasha, using her full name, Natasha, has been accompanied to the restaurant by a contingent of six secret service agents, the Boston Herald reports. The town has been a favourite location for the Obamas on their summer breaks. Photographs show the president's youngest daughter wearing the restaurant's uniform of blue T-shirt and cap and working at a till. A co-worker told the Herald: "She's been working downstairs at takeout. We were wondering why there were six people helping this girl, but then we found out who it was." The White House has not commented on the report but First Lady Michelle Obama has spoken about trying to bring her two daughters up as normally as possible. As well as working on the takeaway counter, Sasha Obama's other duties reportedly include waiting on tables and helping to prepare the restaurant for its lunchtime opening. Her security team has been seen waiting nearby in a large car or sitting on benches while the First Daughter deals with tourists' meals. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36985479
