Entertainment / Actress Cindy Lee Garcia Sues Over Innocence Of Muslims by Onlinemedia(m): 9:52am On Sep 20, 2012
A US actress who appeared in an amateur anti-Islam video that sparked protests across the Muslim world is suing the film's suspected director.

Cindy Lee Garcia accused Nakoula Basseley Nakoula of duping her into a "hateful" film that she was led to believe was a desert adventure movie.

She is also asking a judge to order YouTube to remove the film.

A clip dubbed into Arabic provoked widespread anger for its mocking portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad.

The film, Innocence of Muslims, which was made in the United States, has sparked protests across the Middle East, North Africa and as far away as Sri Lanka, with some demonstrations turning into destructive and violent riots.

Four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stephens, were killed during an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

According to Ms Garcia, the script she received had made no mention of the Prophet Muhammad or made references to religion.

She claims she has received death threats since the video was posted to YouTube, and says her association with the film has harmed her reputation.

In a court filing lodged with Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Ms Garcia alleged fraud, slander and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Dialogue dismay

Lawyers for Ms Garcia contend that changes in dialogue during post-production casts her in a false light.

"[Garcia] had a legally protected interest in her privacy and the right to be free from having hateful words put in her mouth or being depicted as a bigot," the lawsuit says.

"There was no mention of 'Mohammed' during filming or on set. There were no references made to religion nor was there any sexual content of which Ms Garcia was aware," it adds.

Mr Nakoula denies being "Sam Bacile", a pseudonym used by the person who posted the video online.

He has gone into hiding after telling US media he was the manager of a company that helped produce the film, but US officials believe him to be the director.

Mr Nakoula was convicted of fraud in 2010 and ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was released in June 2011 with the provision that he did not access the internet or use any aliases without permission.

Authorities questioned him last week over whether he had violated any of those conditions.

YouTube has so far refused Ms Garcia's requests to remove the film, according to the lawsuit, although it has blocked it in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Egypt.

"This lawsuit is not an attack on the First Amendment nor on the right of Americans to say what they think, but does request that the offending content be removed from the Internet," the complaint states.

Google, which owns YouTube, has blocked the film in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Egypt.

A spokesman for YouTube said they were reviewing the complaint and would be in court on Thursday. Culled from BBC

Nairaland / General / Somalia's New Leader Survives Terrorist Attack by Onlinemedia(m): 9:01pm On Sep 12, 2012
Somalia's new president survived an assassination attempt on his second day in office when two suicide bombers blew themselves up Wednesday while trying to gain access into a heavily guarded hotel that is his temporary residence, officials and witnesses said.

The attack highlights the challenge that insecurity caused by an Islamist insurgency poses to Somalia's fledgling government, which is expected to help transform the east African country from being a failed state to one with functioning government.

The African Union Mission for Somalia said one of its soldiers was killed when the two suicide attackers attempted to penetrate the Jazeera Hotel where the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Kenya?s foreign minister were giving a news conference. Three soldiers were wounded in the blast.

The two suicide bombers set off explosions after they were shot by soldiers guarding the Jazeera Hotel, while another was intercepted and shot dead as he attempted to scale the walls of the hotel's compound, the African Union Mission for Somalia, known as Amisom, said in a statement.

Witnesses say at least one more person was killed, bringing the total death toll to a minimum of five, including the three attackers.

The president who was elected by Parliament on Monday, was undeterred by the explosions and continued to speak to the media, AMISOM said.

Al-Shabab, a radical Islamist militia that is affiliated with al-Qaida and waging an insurgency against the Somali government, quickly claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Shabab had opposed Mohamud?s election, saying it had been manipulated by Western powers.

Somali parliamentarians were tasked with electing a president since no election could be held, given the state of security around the country.

African Union forces are helping the Somali government fight al-Shabab, which the U.S. has designated as terrorist group and which neighboring African countries consider a threat.

Police Corp. Yusuf Ali said he was guarding the Somalia immigration department near the Jazeera Hotel when the two blasts occurred

An Associated Press photographer inside the hotel for the president's news conference with Kenyan Foreign Minister Sam Ongeri confirmed the two officials were safe. The photographer said he saw at least five bodies near the gate of the hotel. Witness Mohammed Nuradin confirmed that death toll.

President Mohamud has taken up temporary residence at Jazeera Hotel in a highly protected zone near the airport before moving to the presidential palace. During Monday's election, he defeated Sheik Shariff Sheikh Ahmed who was seeking re-election as president after having led a transitional government for three years. Somalia has had transitional administrations since 2004.

Mohamud, 56, an academic and activist, is expected to form the county's first functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a longtime dictator.

Since 2004, Somalia has been represented by a U.N.-approved leadership structure called the Transitional Federal Government that mostly controlled only small parts of Mogadishu. That government has accomplished little, but because African Union and Somali troops pushed al-Shabab militants out of the capital last year and most part of the country they occupied, positive momentum is building.

The international community has supported the election of a new president for Somalia, saying it's a step toward moving the country out of its failed-state status but that much more remains to be done in a country bloodied by two decades of war.

Mohamud faces an uphill task unifying a fractious country in the face of the al-Qaida linked-Islamist insurgency and rebuilding a bombed-out infrastructure, food security and institutions. Another challenge is fighting endemic corruption that plagued previous governments.

Many of al-Shabab's troops are reported to have fled into northern Somalia over the last year following their pullout from Mogadishu in August 2010 in the face of an African Union onslaught. Fighters are also flocking to Kismayo, the last major city al-Shabab controls.

Al-Shabab militants, though evicted from Mogadishu, still penetrate the seaside capital to carry out suicide attacks. One such attack took place last month as Somali elders voted in a new internationally backed constitution that guarantees more rights for women and children. The bombers were stopped at the gates and no one except the two attackers was killed.

Entertainment / Who Is Tonto Dike? by Onlinemedia(m): 10:45am On Sep 12, 2012
Nollywood actress, Tonto Dike may strike many as a magnet for controversy, but a stroll into her world reveals there’s more to her than controversies, tattoos, cigarettes, twitter fights and drama.

Here’s the Tonto Dike you do not know:

Born on June 9th, 1985, Dike is now a force to reckon with in Nollywood, the Nigerian movie industry. With an increasing number of Nollywood movies to her credit, she has gradually acquired a large fan base among Nollywood movie fans, both in Africa and in other parts of the world such as the United States, where these movies are exceedingly popular. The light skinned, beautiful and talented Tonto has her determination and her God to thank for her break into the limelight.

Growing up without her mum, Tonto was confined to the parental care of her father and later on, her stepmother, in a family of nine. At a tender age, she gained admiration for notable Hollywood stars Julia Roberts and Al Pacino, and said to herself, ‘I can do this.‘

Her description of Julia Roberts: ‘Lighthearted and serious-minded, brave in the face of any movie role that comes her way…. I see a lot of Julia Roberts in myself.‘ The journey to acting had its rough patches, the most threatening being her admission into University to study engineering. She says, ‘Deep within my heart, I cried, thinking I would never achieve my dreams.‘ She had embraced the idea of the incompatibility between higher education and acting.
However, she decided to take on both activities with enough passion to keep her going till the end, a decision that worked in her favour. Tonto is a graduate of petrochemical engineering from the University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Nigeria.

Tonto’s big break came in 2006 through a Nigerian reality TV show, The Next Movie Star, where she emerged the first runner-up, exposing her to the world of Nigerian movie entertainment. Her experience, she says, was a lot of fun and very emotional, helping her learn the concepts of theater arts, including character analysis and interpretation.

At the end of the reality TV show, Tonto had become acquainted with a few people in the industry who believed in her dreams, and movie roles started coming. Since then, she has been fully involved in a series of Nigerian movies, acting alongside other prominent Nigerian actors.

She still has bigger dreams, with Hollywood and the opportunity to take classes at the New York Film Academy as her next targets. She also intends to own a standard editing studio and a petrochemicals firm in Nigeria.

Apart from starring in movies, Tonto loves dancing, reading fictional novels and her Bible. With her impressive aspirations, there’s definitely a lot more to come from Miss Tonto Dikeh.

Up close and Personal with Miss Tonto Dikeh:

Entertainment / American Woman Rejected By Her Parents For Marrying A Nigerian by Onlinemedia(m): 10:23am On Sep 01, 2012
Despite the efforts put to curb racism world-wide, the bitter act still exists in full swing, till this present day, but here is one American woman who wasn't shaken despite her rejection by her parents for getting married to a black man. In a bid to encourage others, she shared this on her facebook page, Happy: I support mixed-raced families!"

Crystal Ellis Owonubi (pictured above) lives in Jos with her family. She has been sharing her story with other Americans and people in the world at large via a popular Facebook page 'Mixed and Happy:

Her story below......

I grew up in Bauxite, Arkansas. I have lived in Nigeria for the past 7 years with my husband. We have two children together. We have been married for 12 years now. My father has never met my husband and has refused to accept my children also.

When I had my first baby, a little girl that is now 12 years old. I called my father and said that I wanted to come and see him for Christmas with my baby. He said, "I don't want any black people in my home!" and hung up the phone!

I grew up in an all white school with only one mixed girl in the school. I was treated horribly in school because I dated a black boy that lived in the next town at the age of 16. My father told me that he would disown me and to this day, I have never received a phone call from him.

I was called nigger lover in school and nobody wanted to sit by me. I knew what it felt like to be rejected. I was sent away to several different homes for troubled children because my mother did not want me to be with a black person. She would lock the phone up in her room. But, today I live in the blackest nation, Nigeria. And today I am happy that I did not end up racist like them or should I say ignorant."

I am holding back my tears. I thank God that he gave me a family of my own! He has blessed me with a wonderful man that understands me and loves me for who I am. He has blessed me with a wonderful family that accepts me regardless of my skin color and regardless of where I come from.

Even though my mother and father in law are both deceased now, I thank God for their lives and how they were able to show me love before they went on to be with the Lord. Many people have been amazed that I am been able to stay in Nigeria for this long, but now I am ready to share my story.

This is not the full story nor is it the ending of the story, so watch out for my book......coming soon! God wrote my story, but I wrote the book. I pray that many peoples lives will be touched by my story and that lives will be changed. Source http://speedyonlinemedia.com/american-woman…ing-a-nigerian/.html
