'Blame Obasanjo for Niger Delta crisis'
By Abubakar Sharada, Reporter, Dutse

The unending militancy in Niger Delta has been blamed on the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Captain Sagir Mohammed, retired military intelligence officer, made the allegation in Dutse.

He said had the former president taken a drastic action against the militants at the beginning of the crisis the situation could not have worsened.

"Former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be blamed for what is happening in the Niger Delta region because it was in his plot to dominate the region politically that he refused to take drastic action against the militants," he said.

Besides, the former military officer urged the Federal Government not to relent in its current onslaught against the Niger Delta militants, describing their activities as a threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Mohammed, who was a one time commissioner for Information in the old Kano State, said the threat by the militants to attack the north and northerners residing in their region must be taken with all seriousness.

Mohammed, who is also Wazirin Ringim in Jigawa State, pointed out that militancy in the region was getting out of hand and therefore should not be treated with kids gloves.

The chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum said he found the militants' threat as detrimental to human decency, saying, "What the Niger Delta militants are doing is only trying to bring unnecessary unrest in the nation because if they attack the north the entire country will be on fire.

''The threat is mere nonsense because you know for militant from the Niger Delta to even contemplate that they will come to the north and fight the north, it will only lead to nihilistic suicide because the north despite the paramilitary, the army and police can within one month mobilise a standing army of over 500,000 if it comes to extreme hostility for declaration of war,'' he declared.

The Jigawa born retired military officer further stressed that Nigeria as a nation has a restructured, recognised and mechanised armed forces that are capable of not only quelling only external aggression but can once and for all quell the Niger Delta conflagration.

He warned the militants to stop threatening the nation with some 20,000 militants carrying light weapons, urging them to understand that Nigerian army are robust and are inhibited by the position of the internal security doctrine.

Okay. Now it appears that those who are directing MEND to take their fight to the North have got an audience in the person of Captain Sagir Mohammed. Will be interesting to see how people will react to his comments!
