Politics / Our Reforms, Programmes ‘ll Guarantee Brighter Future For Edo’s Next Generation, by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 7:00am On Sep 27, 2023 |
Our reforms, programmes ‘ll guarantee brighter future for Edo’s next generation, says Obaseki The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government’s reforms and programmes over the past six years has set the foundation for the rebirth of the State, guaranteeing a better, brighter future for Edo's next generation. Obaseki, who stated this while briefing journalists, said he is in politics to create wealth and opportunities for the future. The governor noted, “It has to be about the future. Why we are in politics is to create wealth and opportunities for the future, not for ourselves. “If people like Awolowo, Enahoro and the rest acted only in self-interest, we would not have gotten the advantage that brought us to where we picked up from. I am a politician who works for the next generation.” Stressing that the government is leveraging the State’s competitive advantage to drive economic growth and development, the governor stated, “Yet again, we are very fortunate in Edo State. Our land, apart from being strategically located, is also diverse. We have almost everything. “We have good vegetation that sustains a wide variety of crops which serve as raw materials. We have some of the largest onshore reserves for gas which is an energy source. Outside of Kaduna and Zamfara, we have the largest number of mining licences. We already have the basics for industrialisation. We have agriculture and raw materials for industries; we have energy from gas and we have mineral resources.” He added, “So, all we need to do is train our human capacity, which is the reason for the emphasis on education. We cannot continue to buy things from around the world, that’s our dilemma today. So, for us in Edo, we see ourselves as the industrial hub. It’s a very deliberate strategy. We want to build our own industrialisation based on our natural resources.” |

Oredo LGA Chairman Dr. Tom Obaseki Vows Action: Oba Market Set for Environmental Revival, Urhokpota Hall to get a facelift By Edefo Henry The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Dr Tom Obaseki has made a resolute commitment to rejuvenate Oba Market, the economic heart of the City. Following a thorough inspection, Dr. Obaseki expressed his concern about the market's deteriorating condition, primarily caused by the indiscriminate disposal of waste, which has resulted in clogged gutters and severe erosion issues during rainfall. Currently, only fifteen out of eighty toilets are functional, a stark inadequacy considering the substantial number of traders in the market. The council chairman emphasized the necessity for a sustainable solution and called for a collaborative effort between the local government and Oba Market stakeholders, with plans for an upcoming meeting to discuss this vital issue. Recognizing the importance of Oba Market as a pivotal economic hub, Obaseki stressed that weekly cleaning

Politics / Edo Exco Was Only In Lagos For Annual Retreat – Source … No Conditions Given To by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 9:46am On Sep 26, 2023 |
Edo Exco was only in Lagos for annual retreat – Source … no conditions given to Shaibu Investigation has revealed that Edo State Executive Council has not relocated to Lagos contrary to a rumour making the rounds but rather the exco only went for its annual retreat, with the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, commissioners and other heads of MDAs in attendance. According to a close source, the retreat which was held at Lakowe Lakes Golf Resort and Country Estate in the outskirts of Lagos, is a yearly ritual by the state government for strategic sessions with different invited resource persons to brainstorm on the programmes of the government and set agenda for the coming year, with guidelines and dateline for implementation, among others. The source further noted that the Council meeting held on Monday was due to speculation that Wednesday would be declared a Public Holiday, debunking insinuation that it was to prevent the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, from attending the meeting. This is also as the source said that there is no iota of truth in Obaseki giving condition to Shaibu to forget his ambition to contest 2024 governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). |

Politics / 2024 Polls: Edo Central Stakeholders Condemn Shaibu Over Attempt To Blackmail Ob by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 3:14am On Sep 20, 2023 |
2024 Polls: Edo Central Stakeholders Condemn Shaibu over Attempt to Blackmail Obaseki to Abandon Zoning Arrangement Stakeholders in Edo Central Senatorial District have called on the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, to exercise restraint and stop the incessant blackmail in a bid to pressure the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to disregard the senatorial zoning arrangement of the State for the region to produce the next governor of the State. The stakeholders who spoke during a press conference held at the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Chapter, in Benin City, said the frustration Shaibu is expressing is only a decoy to make it seem as if he is being victimised by Obaseki whereas he is intoxicated by his inordinate ambition to become the next governor of the State. Speaking on behalf of the Edo Central people, the Convener of Esan Advocates for Good Governance (EAFGG), Comrade Bartholomew Okoudo, charged Edo people not to be deceived by all the tantrums, blackmail, and display of entitlement by the Deputy Governor, which are failed attempts to force the governor to yield to pressure so that he can have his way. According to him, “The people of Edo Central Senatorial District are calling on the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to exercise restraint and stop the incessant blackmail of the Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in a bid to pressure the governor to yield to pressure to disregard the senatorial zoning arrangement to produce the next governor of the State. “His frequent tirade is to get the Governor to endorse his candidacy for the governorship election holding next year. This is the singular reason he is employing different tricks to box the governor into a corner and extract a commitment. “Shaibu’s attempt to curry public sympathy is aimed at arm-twisting the governor. The frustration he is expressing is only a coy way to make it seem as if he is being victimised, but everyone knows he is intoxicated by his inordinate ambition. “Shaibu thinks everything must be by force. It is on record that the people of Edo North Senatorial District produced Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who is also from Etsako West Local Government Area. He served for eight years between 2008 and 2016 before handing over to the incumbent governor, Obaseki, a Benin man, who was produced by the people of Edo South Senatorial District.” The stakeholders continued: “The lot to produce the next governor according to the zoning arrangement is on the Edo Central Senatorial District, who have never had the opportunity to produce the governor of the State except the short-lived tenure of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, between May 2007 and November 2008. “The shenanigans by Comrade Shaibu aimed at blackmailing the governor in pursuit of his unreasonable and desperate ambition to become the next governor at all cost will not work and must be resisted by all well-meaning Edo people. “During the administration of Chief Lucky Igbinedion, between 1999 and 2007, the Deputy Governor at the time was Chief Mike Oghiadomhe from Etsako in Edo North Senatorial District. He also served for eight years. “This was followed by Oshiomhole, also from Etsako West as Governor and now Comrade Philip Shaibu, from Etsako West, who is almost completing eight years tenure as deputy governor. “How then can he be aspiring to be the next governor? Is this fair and equitable? What is the fate of the other local government areas and senatorial districts in the State?” the stakeholders queried. Okoudo further noted, “We understand that the Deputy Governor has his right to aspire for any political position in the State and Country, but we urge him to stop these charades to pressure the governor into neglecting the zoning arrangement. His agitation runs against the spirit of fairness and equity. “From Shaibu running to the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking for a restraining order to stop Governor Obaseki from impeaching him to spreading falsehoods about the Governor preventing him from performing his roles as deputy and causing various scenes at public events and public places, it has all been an engineered charade to make the Governor seem unapproachable. “The most recent of these is his attempt to force his way into the personal office of the Governor along with his security aides at the Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA, Benin City. “The Deputy Governor who has worked with Governor Obaseki over the past seven years should know him better that no amount of pressure to blackmail him will force the governor to support him in his inordinate quest.” He charged, “We the people of Edo Central Senatorial District are calling on him to stop this charade and follow the path of peace in the spirit of equity and fairness. “There is peace and security in Edo and we urge the Deputy Governor not to create the scene that there is no peace in Edo through his actions and desperate moves.” |

We have already set machinery in place to mobilise our people and to ensure that the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium is full to capacity on match game with fans and supporters from across the State as we are going to provide free transportation from 12 different locations in the city to take people to the stadium and return them after the game.”

This was not enough to discredit the entire process, hence, we salute the leadership and management accordingly.” He continued: “We hereby congratulate the winners and also, call on those who think otherwise to approach a court of competent jurisdiction to seek redress rather than embarking on a journey of self-help. In Democracy, the majority will always have their way while the minority will have their say. “Now that the election has come and gone the winners must not see the opportunity for self-serving but to develop and formulate policies that will enhance social well-being of the society. Nairaland / General / Obaseki Says Outcome Of LG Polls Reaffirms PDP Dominance In Edo by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 4:45pm On Sep 03, 2023 |
Obaseki says outcome of LG polls reaffirms PDP dominance in Edo … result reflects people’s wish, says gov The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s local government election in the State shows the party’s dominance, noting that the outcome of the election is a reflection of the wish of the majority of Edo people. Obaseki spoke to journalists at the Diocese of Benin (Anglican Communion), St. Peter's Anglican Church, during the 15th memorial thanksgiving service of his father, late Pa Roland Oni Obaseki The governor was in the company of the Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq. and Oredo Local Government chairman-elect, Dr. Tom Obaseki, among other top government functionaries. The governor, who was elated over the outcome of the local government election in the State, said Edo people are democratically mature as there was no single violence recorded during the electioneering process. He said, “We have a situation room where we monitored the election process across the State and want to thank the people. You can see that we are democratically mature in Edo State, in terms of the way the election was conducted. “I was surprised at the diligence of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC). I went round and saw the number of polling units mounted by EDSIEC and the various electoral officers in the three metropolitan local government areas and it was quite impressive. The turnout was fair as expected and it shows that we can conduct elections without disrupting economic and social activities. “The people voted and went about their various activities for the weekend. Overall, I believe we have done well. It was a free and fair election. The mass participation and dominance of PDP as a party in the State was clearly exhibited in this election.” Obaseki further noted, “I have not seen an election that has not been challenged even the one in America was challenged. That is why provisions are made in the law and in the process; for tribunals to review and adjudicate on cases and complaints from contestants. “Overall, the evidence is overwhelming as PDP campaigned in this LG election as if it was a major national election. I went with them around the 18 local government areas of the State and Councillors campaigned vigorously across various wards across the State but I didn't see too much of the opposition parties and I am not surprised at the results from the election.” He added, “There was no violence and this shows that the election result is a reflection of the wish of the Edo people.”

In a sitting on August 23, Justice Ahmed Mohamed fixed after entertaining final submissions from lawyers to parties in the suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/2027/2023. Listed with Obaseki as defendants are the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Speaker of the Assembly and the Chief Judge of Edo State. Shaibu’s lawyer, George Ibrahim, stated that while the defendants are contending that the deputy governor’s case is hinged solely on impeachment, they failed to address the allegation that Obaseki was planning to prevent his client from further carrying out his constitutional duties. “They have not denied the fact that the gate between the offices of the Deputy Governor and the Governor has been locked,” Ibrahim said.

Nairaland / General / Midwest At 60 Anniversary: Obaseki, Oborevwori, Oshiomhole, Others Chart Path Fo by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 7:53pm On Aug 28, 2023 |
Midwest at 60 Anniversary: Obaseki, Oborevwori, Oshiomhole, others chart path for region’s devt, growth …We must plan for our future, promote competition, stop reliance on FG for direction, resources – Obaseki … Edo is one, we must continue to work for our progress – Oshiomhiole The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his Delta State Counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori and the Senator Representing Edo North Senatorial District and former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other stakeholders from the South-South region, on Monday, converged on Benin City, to chart a new path for the region’s growth and development during a colloquium to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum. The colloquium, with the theme, 60 years after the referendum, which way Midwest?’ had in attendance leaders and other stakeholders from Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states. Obaseki, who noted that the region is still bedeviled by numerous social and economic challenges 60 years after the referendum, reiterated the need to plan better for the future of the people and attain accelerated development with a less cumbersome system of government that promotes competition among sub-nationals and discourages the constant resort to Abuja for direction and resources. The governor in his welcome address at the event said, “Today marks a significant milestone in our history as we reflect on our journey as a people, celebrating our achievements, acknowledging our challenges, and renewing our commitment to the ideals that shape our present and future.” He stated, “Six decades ago, the people of Edo, Delta and parts of Bayelsa State united in agreement for their self-determination, to chart their own course to political and economic freedom and break free from the chains of regional dominance. “The Midwest Region in 1963, which was carved out of the then Western Region, three years after Independence and colonial rule, was a product of the bold character and love for freedom of our forebears. The region which later came to be known as Bendel State in 1976, was the first State in Nigeria to be created by a referendum, signaling our staunch belief in democratic ideals. “It was the foresight, sacrifice, and struggle of courageous and notable leaders such as Oba Eweka II, Oba Akenzua II, Chief Dennis Osadebe and Chief Anthony Enahoro, among others that secured the creation of the then Midwestern Region. They had braved the odds and battled to create a distinctive political identity for a people who have always loved and cherished their freedom, culture and creative energies.” Obaseki added, “The story of the Midwest Referendum is one of unity, resilience, and the power of collective action as it marked the beginning of a new era with which we took control of our destinies and that resulted in growth, development and progress. It is a story that continues to inspire us to this day, reminding us of our capacity to overcome challenges, transform adversity into opportunities, and forge a better path for ourselves.” The governor continued: “Sixty years after the referendum, we are still bedevilled with numerous socio-economic challenges, which require a reset of the institutions and structures that propped the region up in the past. “This is why we have undertaken holistic reforms of our institutions in Edo State in the last seven years. We have advanced reforms and innovations in various spheres of the economy that have opened Edo up for investment. “We must continue to work together to overcome challenges, build on our successes, and sustain collaborations toward building a strong and virile region.” He queried, “An important question to ask is: Are the conditions that led to the Midwest Referendum in 1963 not staring us in the face in Nigeria today? Would we not be able to plan better for the future of our people and attain accelerated development with a less cumbersome system of government that promotes competition among sub-nationals and discourages the constant resort to Abuja for direction and resources?” The governor further noted, “Nigeria is in dire straits today as a result of the poor handling of our economic fortunes. And with the removal of the fuel subsidies among other political and economic challenges, perhaps the Midwest option may just be what we need to fall back to in order to stand a chance at survival and set a new course for economic rejuvenation. “I extend my deepest appreciation to all those who have contributed to the growth and development of our dear Midwest region, now Edo and Delta States. We must continue to work together to build a State that stands as a beacon of progress, a model of good governance, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of our people.” The Governor of Delta State represented by his Deputy, Monday Oyeme, said, “It is worthy of note that when the people decide on a stand, nothing can change it not even intimidation. 89 percent of people voted for a referendum to opt-out from the western region to form the Midwest region without violence as the people’s choice prevailed.” Oshiomhole, who described the event as apt, thanked Governor Obaseki for organising the event and bringing stakeholders from Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states to chart a path for their future. He said, “This is the kind of event that is needed as it will bring the unity we need for the progress of our people. When I received the invitation letter personally signed by you, I said to myself that I must be here to solidarise and support you as Edo is one. “There are a lot of young people here in this hall and this kind of event will enable our young people to know when the Midwest was created and formed. The Midwest is truly the only region of unity that came together to fight for its freedom.” PHOTO CAPTION DSC_01 L-R: Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; his wife, Mrs. Betsy; representative of Delta State Governor and Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; representative of Bayelsa State Governor, Amb. Politics / Subsidy Palliatives: FG Must Not Gag Elected Officials When They Speak Truth To by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 11:52am On Aug 27, 2023 |
Subsidy Palliatives: FG must not gag elected officials when they speak truth to power – Edo govt The Edo State Government wishes to express its displeasure on the recent press statement credited to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, over Governor Godwin Obaseki’s comments regarding the Federal Government’s handling of the resultant effects of the removal of fuel subsidy. It is unfortunate and sad that the Federal Government now wants to gag citizens and even a popularly elected governor from speaking truth to power and expressing himself in the light of the perilous times we have fallen into. This action of the Minister is reminiscent of what happened in 2021, when Governor Obaseki raised the alarm over the irregular and illegal printing of money by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria. The claim that Governor Godwin Obaseki failed to attend the National Economic Council (NEC) meetings is blatantly false. The governor has attended all NEC meetings since the onset of this administration and records are there to prove this fact. Records of Edo State Government’s performance are also available for Nigerias to verify. Our reforms in the education sector, especially the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme has been hailed globally; in the agriculture sector the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) Programme is currently one of Africa’s largest agricultural programs; our radical reforms in the civil and public service with the government’s e-government and capacity enhancement initiatives, as well as the development of a valid and effective Social Register, to mention but a few. The area where the Minister may be referring to as non performance should be the condition of the extensive Federal Roads running through the state, which the Federal Government has abandoned and even prevented us from intervening to repair claiming that contracts for their repairs have been awarded. Isn’t it rather unfortunate that the Honourable Minister in his first outing has taken this untoward route when he ought to be reconciliatory and seek to synergise ideas and opinions on how best to carry the country along in this difficult and trying times that we have found ourselves? Nairaland / General / Edo LG Poll: PDP Alerts On NDDC, Apc’s Plan To Buy Votes With N150m by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 4:32pm On Aug 26, 2023 |
Edo LG poll: PDP alerts on NDDC, APC’s plan to buy votes with N150m …funds should be deployed to fix failed federal roads The Chairman of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, has raised the alarm over plot by a director with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and leading member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo to rig and buy votes during the September 2 Local Government elections with N150 million polled from the NDDC. The Edo PDP Chairman, in a statement, said intelligence available to the party revealed that a Director with the Niger Delta Development Commission will be sharing N150 million at his residence in Benin City to leaders and members of the APC to finance the rigging plan ahead of next Saturday, September 2 Local Government elections in the state. According to him, “We are once again drawing the attention of the world and all lovers of democracy to the glaring fact that the APC is attempting to rig the Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, by mobilising N150 million from the Niger Delta Development Commission to execute their evil plan to buy votes and rig the elections. “It is regrettable and disturbing that at a time when Edo people are suffering as a result of the criminally negleted federal roads and the biting economic hardship supervised by the APC led Federal Government, the party is deploying NDDC’s resources to subvert the will of Edo People.” “It is shameful that the APC-led federal government is using funds meant for the development of the oil-rich Niger Delta to buy votes. We are sure that the resort to this shameful tactic is because the APC is certain of defeat. The N150 million should be deployed by the NDDC to fix the failed federal roads in Edo State. And if they are desirous of winning the elections they should campaign and sell their programmes and candidates to Edo people."

Nairaland / General / Traditional Rulers In Edo South Back Obaseki’s Implementation Of 1979 Law by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 2:58am On Aug 25, 2023 |
Traditional rulers in Edo South back Obaseki’s implementation of 1979 Law … new regime ‘ll enhance good governance, end rural-urban migration, says gov ….’ll improve security, sense of belonging at grassroots - Enigie Traditional rulers from Edo South Senatorial District have unanimously declared their backing for the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, commending the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for the implementation of the new regime where all traditional rulers in the 18 local government areas of the State will receive monthly allowances to administer their domains. The traditional rulers made their position known on Thursday when they paid a ‘Thank You’ visit to the governor at the Government House, Benin City. They expressed their appreciation to the governor for what they described as a bold step taken by him to address the age-long lingering problem. This is as they disclosed their unflinching backing of the governor’s action, noting that this development will not only enhance good governance at the grassroots level but also give a sense of belonging and authority to the traditional rulers to effectively administer their various domains and put in check their people. The Enogie (Duke) of Dukedom Evbuobanosa, Professor Gregory Iduorobo Akenzua, who led the delegation while commending the governor for the new regime, applauded him for his government’s developmental strides across the State. According to him, “For a number of years, we have observed a portion of the local government law of Edo State that affects Enigie and wondered for a while why it was not being implemented. “But by your recent declaration, you have given a monumental opportunity for Enigie in Edo South to participate actively in the governance of the State and we are grateful. “We thank you for your courage, wisdom, and determination to write anything that is not right since you assumed the reign of government in Edo State. We thank you very much as we are very appreciative of the monumental strides in development at all levels that we have experienced in your time.” He added, “This is why we are here to show our appreciation and pledge our loyalty to you and thank you and your team of determined public officers. We thank you on behalf of the people of Edo South Senatorial District who have not felt the impact of traditional governance effectively for some time.” In his response, the governor, who thanked the Enigie for the visit, said he will continue to work with the traditional institution in the State to ensure widespread development and growth across the State. Obaseki said, "We took the decision in response to your letter you wrote to me last year. We looked at the issues critically and felt the reasons in the letter were valid particularly in terms of the situation in Nigeria today. “You asked me to implement a section of the Edo State Traditional Rulers Law which by law, I have no choice but to do and that law stipulates that every local government should have its own traditional council. “The reason why that decision was taken and enacted many years ago is that the traditional authorities in every jurisdiction should assist the government in enforcing law and order and ensuring development within the area. The law applies to the whole of the State, including the North, Central and South Senatorial Districts.” He continued: “A very close look at the implementation of the law, you can see the advantages that North and Central have had as a result of full implementation of the law, which has allowed full participation by the traditional authorities in the administration of each local government. “By implementing the law in Edo South Senatorial District, we now expect a much faster rate of development than we have seen in the past. We know some of you in the past have assisted local government authorities in areas like security, education, and welfare which you did on your own. “You have assisted in the past to support vigilante groups, improving security in your area. I thank the Enogie of Ehor who worked tirelessly with us to deal with kidnapping at Ehor and Igieduma axis a few years ago. Working with him made us understand the issues more and we were able to checkmate their activities in that area.” Obaseki charged, “In your meetings which must be regular, you must work closely with local government authorities and ensure every land is policed, especially the forest areas as we don't want our forest to be used as camps for criminals and bandits.” The governor further thanked the traditional rulers for collaborating with his administration to fight human trafficking and illegal migration in Edo State, adding, “We must also take the issues of education very seriously as we have noticed that we don’t have as many schools as we should have in your jurisdiction. People are not willing to live and teach in those areas as a lot of migration to Benin City. “In our 30-year development plan, one of the things we will put in our development plan is how to make our areas more comfortable to enable us to reduce the rural-urban migration. I thank you for your support and collaboration in our fight against human trafficking and irregular migration. “We need to reverse migration as Benin City can’t take everybody. You need to make your area attractive by providing infrastructure and services for people to live comfortably.” Reaffirming his government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of Edo people, Obaseki said the government is sustaining efforts to tackle poverty and improve the livelihood of the people. He stated, “A register for the poor and vulnerable was compiled in 2019 with 314,000 households and 1.2 million people in your domain. Verify the register as we work with you to put in place a system to disburse money on a monthly basis for these people to enable them to take the pressure off you because they come to you for help.” Recall that about two weeks ago, the Edo State Government Executive Council approved the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, which translates to a new regime where all traditional rulers in the 18 local government areas of the state will receive monthly allowances to administer their domains. In a statement to that effect, Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq. noted, "The Council resolved that there would be a traditional council in each local government area across the state’s 18 local councils. “In the law, the Oba of Benin remains the permanent chairman of the Edo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs and also the permanent chairman of the Benin Traditional Council. “The Benin Traditional Council is the umbrella body of Edo South Traditional Council. “The budget and funding of the Benin Traditional Council will be completely independent of the financing which goes to all other traditional councils of the various local government areas in the State." Nairaland / General / Our Efforts At Resetting Education In Edo Have Yielded Fruits, Says Obaseki by OVIAEFOSA1960(m): 2:36am On Aug 25, 2023 |
Our efforts at resetting education in Edo have yielded fruits, says Obaseki ... promises upgrade of facilities ...gov has revamped teaching profession - Oviawe The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said his administration’s efforts in resetting education in the State have yielded positive fruits with visible evidence to show. Obaseki said this while delivering his welcome address as the College Visitor at the maiden matriculation ceremony of the Edo College of Education, in Igueben Local Government Area of the State. The governor said, “We decided to reset education because of the critical and important role that it plays in our lives as individuals and as a nation. That reset button means we have to look at education afresh from the beginning, from the very basic level which is the foundation to the tertiary institution level. “There was a lot of rancour in the beginning. We shut down many of the schools because we felt they were not doing what they were set out to do in the first place. We changed the laws setting most of them up as we didn’t see the need to have several schools doing the same thing in an uncoordinated manner. “We decided to look holistically at education in Edo State and thank God for the courage to take those bold moves. Today, what have we achieved? First, we have looked at the entire spectrum, the ecosystem, and certain key pillars which we believe that the pillars will rest. “Without a foundation, nothing can be built as such we focused on the foundation of education, which is basic education. We quickly realised that for basic education to work and for children to learn, you have to focus on the teachers. Focusing on the teachers meant motivating and giving them tools to work, particularly technology. The key to that is ensuring that you have an institution where you properly train these teachers. That is why the College of Education is key to our education reforms.” Speaking on the effort made by his government to revamp College of Education in the state, he disclosed that the government decided to create the multi campuses system to allow for accelerated growth and effective management system as well as create room for more students to be given the opportunity to realise their dream of becoming professional and well trained teachers, noting that the teaching profession in Edo has been totally transformed. Obaseki added, “ We pressed a reset button, shut down the College, and restarted as one College of Education with the headquarters in Igueben.” To the matriculating students, Obaseki said, “You are the first intake into this College and you are the first matriculating students today. This is why I have taken time out of my busy schedule to wish you well and let you know you are the pioneers of something new, the future that will transform Edo State. “This matriculation is not only a transformative occasion of your life but also a transformative occasion for education in Edo State. I am glad that I am here to see what is going on.” Reassuring sustained investment in the Institution, the governor further noted, “A lot of investment still needs to be made on this campus and I am assuring you that I will make those investments. We started with Abudu and the refurbishment is complete and this will be the next Campus. The infrastructure in this campus will be upgraded, particularly accommodation for staff and students. “My presence here today means that I take the school and what we are doing here very seriously. Rest assured you have my support as I continue to be governor. To also make sure that the person who succeeds me continues to focus and strengthen education in Edo State.” The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, said the Obaseki-led administration has completely revamped the teaching profession in the State, making it more attractive for qualified people. “I thank Governor Obaseki for the reforms and rebirth of education in Edo State which started in 2017. He came here several times to understand and figure out how to educate and produce professional teachers in Edo State. “Through his works, vision and commitment, the governor has restored the pride of the teaching profession which is now for polished, educated, reformed and refined men and women. You are all here because teaching is your first option.” She added, “The College is to reposition the profession of teaching, find and recruit the best in the system. The vision of the governor is that by the time you are graduating you will have a job in one of our schools and also by the time you are graduating, you are technically vibrant.” Earlier in her welcome address, the Acting Provost of the Edo State College of Education, Igueben Campus, Prof. (Mrs.) Roseline Osagie, said, “The College in partnership with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has started the process of offering a one-year Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) especially for the Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) teaching fellows.” Also, the Enogie of Igueben and Okaigun of Esanland, HRH Ehizogie Eluojierior I, commended the governor for his transformation of the education sector in Edo State, adding, “Obaseki has visited here more than three times as we have governors who have never visited Igueben once. Obaseki is a lover of education and the education sector has benefited from it. We thank him for the school, the competent staff and appeal to him to upgrade the facilities here as he activates his machinery to make this a reality.”

Something is waiting for you when you return from Algeria, just put in your best and make us all proud.” PHOTO CAPTION Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, with Bendel Insurance Football Club players, ahead of their return leg game against Aso Chlef FC of Algeria, at the Benin Airport, in Benin City, on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
