As Barça insisted the only way Messi could leave was through the payment of his €700million release clause, the club's talisman and captain has accepted he has no choice but to stay.

But as he made perfectly clear in his interview with Goal Spain, he is not happy about it.

Lionel Messi has backtracked on his decision to leave Barcelona in an interview with Goal Spain

Published on Friday, the interview was wide-ranging but entirely pinned on the recent furore, which began on August 25 when he informed the Catalan club of his desire to leave.

At the time Messi was under the impression he could unilaterally terminate his contract at the end of the 2019-20 season, but the club claimed the clause had expired in June and LaLiga backed the club up.

With Manchester City circling, Messi's father and agent, Jorge, travelled to Barcelona on Wednesday in an attempt to find a compromise, but seemingly there was none to be found.

Ronaldo has sat out training since Wednesday after complaining of a pain in his foot and could now miss the opening match of Portugal's first Nations League defence

Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for Portugal's UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia due to a foot infection.

The 35-year-old informed medical staff of a problem on Wednesday and is now being treated for the infection while on international duty.

Portugal meet Croatia on Saturday evening before facing Sweden away on Tuesday.

And Portugal coach Fernando Santos admitted he does not expect to have his star man back to full fitness in time for their first fixture since November.

Sports / Sergio Ramos Urges Lionel Messi To Stay At Barcelona Amid Man City Speculation by Panti7: 10:01pm On Sep 03, 2020
Sergio Ramos has urged Lionel Messi to stay at Barcelona for the sake of Spanish football.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner has asked to leave the La Liga giants this summer.

Manchester City are the bookmakers' favourites to sign Messi, although it remains unclear what fee any potential suitors would have to pay for the Argentine superstar.

Barcelona, with the support of La Liga, insist that a club would have to trigger the 33-year-old's £630million release clause, whilst Messi wants to leave for free.

Sports / No Agreement In Meeting Between Barcelona And Messi’s Father by Panti7: 8:45am On Sep 03, 2020
Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona looked no closer to being resolved after the first meeting between the player’s father and club officials on Wednesday ended without an agreement, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.

The person said club president Josep Bartomeu met for more than 90 minutes with Jorge Messi to discuss the the Argentina star’s request to leave the club, but that neither part made any concessions.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about the private meeting.

Lionel Messi last week told Barcelona he wanted to leave the club and invoked a contract clause that allowed him to depart for free at the end of the season. But Barcelona claimed the clause expired in June and said he must see out his contract until June 2021, unless the buyout clause of 700 million euros ($837 million) is paid.

Despite suggestions from the press that Süle would be the leader of Germany’s defensive line moving forward, the center back doesn’t exactly see himself in that role, per se. He said he just tries to bring his voice and responsibility to the team every time he’s in the squad: “I have never chosen myself as the defense boss, those were never my words. I try to leave my mark on the team and take responsibility.”

Sports / Harry Maguire: Manchester United Give Captain Extra Time Off by Panti7: 1:07pm On Aug 31, 2020
Harry Maguire will be given extra time off by Manchester United following his arrest and subsequent court case in Greece last month.

article image
Those members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad not on international duty are expected back at Carrington for pre-season training from Wednesday.

But it's understood the United captain might not link up with his team-mates until the weekend at the earliest.

That would give Maguire two weeks of training before the opening game of the season against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 19, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

United and Manchester City have both been given an extra week by the Premier League due to their involvement in the latter stages of the Europa League and Champions League respectively.

Maguire had been due to meet up with the England squad at the weekend ahead of the Nations League ties against Iceland and Denmark, but was dropped from the squad by Gareth Southgate.

Maguire's legal term successfully appealed the 21-month suspended prison sentence originally handed down by the court, a full re-trial will be held at a later date although may have to wait up to two years before his appeal is heard due to a backlog of legal cases in Greece.

Maguire's conviction 'no longer recognised in law'
Explaining Maguire's appeal process, leading barrister Paula Rhone-Adrien told the PA news agency: "Yes, the proceedings have been nullified, but this simply means the conviction is no longer recognised in law.

"Maguire is going to be given an opportunity to state why the court was wrong to have found him guilty. Everyone is entitled to a right to appeal a decision made against them."

This, "in essence", means Maguire is innocent unless the appeal hearing finds him guilty.

Mrs Rhone-Adrien said: "It's a complete retrial and he will even be able to adduce fresh evidence if he needs to."

Sports / Young Barcelona Fans Left Devastated After Messi No-show by Panti7: 9:29pm On Aug 30, 2020
Barcelona fans across the world were left saddened by the news Lionel Messi hadn't turned up for PCR testing on Sunday.

None were more devastated than the children who were waiting outside Barcelona's training ground kitted out in Messi shirts.

As the youngsters waited outside the Sant Joan Despi complex, they saw Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, among others, all arrive for testing - but not Messi.

The captain stayed away as part of his ongoing dispute with the club after handing in a transfer request on Tuesday.

The influence Messi has on Barcelona supporters is clearly massive and his departure would leave a wound that will take time to heal.

Sports / Pep Could MISS The Start Of Man City's Pre-season After Travelling To Barcelona by Panti7: 2:59pm On Aug 29, 2020
Pep Guardiola will be required to quarantine upon his return to the UK after travelling to Barcelona, casting doubt over whether he can lead the start of Manchester City’s pre-season.

A photograph of the City boss in Catalonia emerged on social media overnight which, according to UK government guidelines, means Guardiola will have to self-isolate for 14 days when he lands back in Manchester.

Even if Guardiola returned to the UK today he couldn't, under Government rules, report to City’s training complex until September 11 at the earliest.

The bulk of City’s first-team players are not due to return to pre-season training until the week after next due to their involvement in forthcoming international matches.

City are aware of the photo and are confident the impact of Guardiola’s self-isolation period on their pre-season will be minimal given players won’t start reporting for duty until the latter stages of the week commencing September 7.

However, the small contingent of City’s non-international players may have to start their preparations for the new season without their manager.

Government guidelines state that anyone arriving from Spain to the UK must quarantine for 14 days.

The Premier League season starts on September 12 - but City’s first isn’t until nine days later when they face Wolves after the Premier League ruled they could start their season later due to their involvement in the latter stages of the Champions League last month.
