TOH:

Yea after that you end up having to get your job to sponsor you with a H-1(I think that's the name)and most employers do.

A good friend is being sponsered now because her husband was covered at work and the spouse gets it automatically.

If you are referring to H1-B visas - I don't think that's really meant for graduate students, it is meant for professionals in certain fields with years of experience and for which you'll need a company to sponsor you. It's the equivalent of a UK work permit here. Also this ties you down to that employer. Definitely not as flexible as IGS or PSW that UK graduates have here.

For me personally, having put that significant amount into studying overseas, I would prefer a scheme such as IGS or PSW that would allow me to seek for employment - at least get some international exposure before heading back to Nigeria. I wouldn't really want to go through the hassles of looking for an employer to sponsor work permit et al. It's really a chicken and egg situation. How can you as a recently graduated student could possibly have amassed enough experience to motivate a company to file work permit for you bearing in mind that there would be numerous citizens from the country with similar qualifications. What is ideal is what UK is doing. Giving you the leave to remain and work, it is now up to you to find suitable employment within that period.

aremuu:

Attention akolawole, funkybaby, londoncool, Mr pataki, Paribus and anyone else that can help

I have been following the trend of things here and I think I can obtain help here.

I will be making my student visa application next week. I'm okay with other things Ive learnt here but some issues i need to be clear about:

1.I was able to get an Hausa man as a Sponsor and I'm a Yoruba guy as my name implies-can it work? i mean is that acceptable.

2.Also I was working from 2007 until January this year in one small company with just 30k pay-is that tenanble or should I just say I don't have a job?

3.please tell me how important is the issue of sponsors tax clearance certificate which I've read about here-my sponsor is just a business man, legal though.

4. there is a section on the form where its asked if i will work in the uk-what do you advise noting that If i answer no it may place a work prohibition on my visa. I actually intend to do some pt work there though.

Please reply asap , i will be grateful, God help us all.

In a brief response to your questions:

1.  As previously stated by an earlier poster, anyone can be your sponsor - their name, tribe or nationality does not really matter. However please take note that what is of utmost importance is that you must be able to establish beyond doubt the motivation for your sponsor in taking up such significant expenditure in sponsoring your education. Don't make assumptions, let all document you are tendering make obvious the fact that it is indeed logical and feasible for your sponsor to be taking up financing your education in the UK.

2. If the work you are doing is well documented - i.e payslips, appointment letter, verifiable company, tax clearance, then by all means include this in your application. Not so much as to prove significant income but to help establishing that you have been economically active in Nigeria. Also depending on the nature of your present employment in terms of how it is related to your initial educational qualifications, there might be an opportunity to indicate that the pursuit of a UK degree is meant to significantly improve your present career situation. But please let it be all sensible with a logical flow.

3. Sponsor's tax clearance certificate is quite important. I understand the situation of your sponsor being a 'businessman' and probably without an income tax clearance. But bear in mind that most foreign embassies observe to the letter the laws of the native (host) country. If an individual has legitimately made a couple of millions through business and if same is reflected through his bank accounts, it is presumed that there must be proper remittance of income tax due to the appropriate authorities for those income to be identiified and acceptable as legit.  Maybe others might give you ideas on this.

4. On the form and any situation that you are asked if you intend to work in the UK, your answer should always be no. Regardless of your answer, student visas for studies 12months duration or more are allowed to work 20hrs per week.

UK students are able to stay back legally in the UK to work after graduation (without any restrictions) for 1 full year and most likely increased to 2 this year. Not to sound ignorant but is there such a scheme for international students graduating in US universities. I am really interested to know.

If you are a married student. UK allows your spouse to work full time during your period of studies. To my knowledge, this is not the case for US.  That to me is a big plus.

Saw this in a Nigerian newspaper. I think it might be beneficial for those wishing to study in the UK and have issues with funding. Regards

******Bank PHB/ British Council pioneer UK Educational loans *******

Bank PHB partners British Council to pioneer UK Educational loans

Nigerian students seeking to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom but limited by funds have been thrown a lifeline by Bank PHB.  The bank, in partnership with the British Council is floating an education finance facility that students seeking to continue their higher education pursuits in UK can tap into.

The Bank PHB Education Loan, which will be available as from May 2008, is aimed at encouraging eligible Nigerians to study in the UK universities through a finance facility provided by the bank. Qualified students will be required to open an Education Account with Bank PHB and build it up to 50 percent of the School fees as advised by the school in question.

Once this is done, the student or guarantor can then apply for a UK Education Loan that will cover the school fees, accommodation and maintenance for the period of education. The 50% deposited amount will be invested on behalf of the candidate by Bank PHB Asset Management and held in Bank PHB till the completion of academic programme

The student or guarantor or parents can apply for the Education Loan as well as service the debt over the tenor of the facility. Those needing immediate loans to finance the education of students already studying in the UK can also apply for the Bank PHB Education loan which is the first of its kind in the country.

Listing the benefits of the educational loan, Francis Atuche, Managing Director of Bank PHB noted that besides the credit facilities to finance study in the UK universities, benefiting students can also access information on the UK universities through the British Council.

According to Mrs Winnie Eley, Deputy Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, “our purpose is to build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and Nigeria and to increase appreciation of UK’s creative ideas and achievements. We put great care in identifying partners to work together for the benefits of the people in both countries. We are pleased with the progress of collaboration with Bank PHB so far and look forward to the launch of the education loan which aims to provide the opportunity that many Nigerians would value in life.”

Giving further insight into the facility, Olu Akanmu, Divisional Director Retail Banking disclosed that persons applying for the loan could be parents or guardians, who wish to give their children or wards quality education in UK higher institutions or students who wish to pursue higher education in the UK. “Such student will be required to have a sponsor. The sponsor shall assume the responsibilities of the borrower.” “The Education loan is also for individuals who wish to pursue any undergraduate or postgraduate course in any bona fide UK universities. The British Council is the principal source of UK education information for Nigerians.” Olu Akanmu disclosed.

Olu Akanmu revealed that Bank PHB is introducing the educational loan because of the noticeable gap in the market as currently no bank provides education loans, a facility that is easily obtained and available in developed countries. The absence of credit facility is a major barrier to thousands of aspiring and suitably qualified Nigerians.

In accepting to partner with Bank PHB, Mr. Chikodi Onyemerela, New Business Development Manager, the British Council in Nigeria, expressed the Council’s commitment to supporting the many talented Nigerians who could gain serious benefit from a credible credit facility in Nigeria. Mr. Onyemerela commended Bank PHB’s vision to build capacity for Nigeria and the first bank to respond to the credit facility which would no doubt benefit thousands of Nigerians.

According to the figures provided by the British Council, there were 11,500 Nigerians who pursued full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the UK in the academic year 2006-2007.

Mr. Olu Akanmu noted that “the quest for quality education in the UK will continue and the number of students seeking UK education will grow rapidly if a number of such students can pay their way through these UK schools. It is in response to this that Bank PHB will be partnering with the British Council to provide Education Loan to eligible Nigerians to access tertiary education in the UK.”

The Bank PHB Education Loan ties in with the bank’s focus on developing and inspiring Nigerian youths and contributing to the development of quality human capital in Nigeria. Bank PHB which is the sponsor of the entrepreneur inspiring Apprentice Africa currently showing in five different countries in Africa including Nigeria, also implements the highly valued Bank PHB national scholars scheme which has completed 13 libraries in 13 different public secondary schools in nine states of the country as well as provided scholarships for more about 400 indigent students in these secondary schools.
Last year, Bank PHB became a partner to the British Council’s International Young Creative Entrepreneurs (IYCE) initiative, which identifies and rewards talented young and creative entrepreneurs working across the vast spectrum of the creative world. The Bank also scored another first in 2007 when it became the First Nigerian Company to be invited by the US Embassy to sponsor the highly prestigious Fulbright Scholarship of the US government.

Travel / Re: Student Visa Success Stories by paribus(m): 12:33am On Jun 02, 2008
Hi. This depends on what your current situation is in Nigeria. The usual way is family ties (if you are married or with kids), returning to job (if you are going on study leave), or at worst get newspaper postings of recent jobs that have been recently advertised which requires the qualification you are going to the UK to study. Also you have the chance of a personal statement to butress whatever point you are making - give your own extensive account of how the course is of benefit to you - in such a way that you can't wait to finish the course and come back home to avail yourself of the opportunities here (which you must have documented though).

There are no hard and fast rules to providing this evidence and it really depends on individual situation. Regards
Travel / Re: Student Visa Success Stories by paribus(m): 10:28am On May 04, 2008
Hi. I'm not quite sure when is the most appropriate time. I think it would depend on when your school is resuming. VFS always advise to send in your application at least four weeks in advance of your intended day of travel and i think a bit more for students especially nearing summer time when they have more applications to deal with. If all what you need for  your application is complete, I see no reason why you can't send it now. However please do check on vfs website for the latest advice in this respect. Regards

@Pahtakhee - Please correct me if I'm wrong but is the 75 points for the new HSMP and 75 points for PSW the same. I think they are different as attainment of the 75 points for PSW does not take into consideration age or previous earnings and country where earned.  Regards
Travel / Re: Uk Visa - Visa Appeal Process by paribus(m): 9:43pm On May 03, 2008
@Akolawole - Thanks, I'm always on the lookout for as much info as possible on this matter as I'll be dealing with it in another 5-6 months. Really I have a file opened for my application and I'm just ticking off the requirements one by one as I don't want to be surprised when the time to apply comes.

The 75points regarding the PBS would not be a problem for any applicant if he has a UK degree from a recognised institution during which he has leave to be in the UK as a student or dependent and has obtained that degree within the last 12 months of his application. In fact I think these requirements means that 99.9% of international students in UK should automatically qualify (except for unusual or exceptional cases). The statement of intent document that Imani referred to contains this and can be found here:

http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/managingourborders/pbsdocs/statementofintent/highlyskilledunderpbs.pdf?view=Binary
(pg 12 for the section on IGS/PSW).

The document also highlights an 800-pound maintenance fund requirement for a single student that would be applying for IGS and additional funds requirements  if dependants are involved.

Also the timetable for the different types of PBS is indicated here:

http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/managingborders/managingmigration/apointsbasedsystem/timetableforPBSlaunch

It indicates end of summer 2008 as launching time for PBS. I would suppose that means anytime from end of August. This was what I had initially wanted to find out, but as it is, it is only when this is actually started that the requirements would be definite.

Saying this however, november is still some months off for me, who knows, my personal situation might change, I do have a good offer on the table in naija after studies but I sure would like to have some international work experience especially for the field I'm involved with - would be invaluable back in Nigeria.

Thanks for taking time to worry about my case. Regards

@LondonCool - From what I know of the case, this happened about 2 years ago and I don't think the biometric (fingerprint) requirements was in place then, just the normal photos and signature. The subject has already written to the BHC in this regards and while no conclusive ackowledgement of a record update was given, in the absence of further entry issues, one can only presume that the record update had been done.

Regarding the possibility of the subject being an accomplice, well like you said 'no one knows'and possibly no one might ever. I'll be inclined to look at the motivation based on the scenario depicted. No point in deliberating on this however - as it would forever be subjected to differing perspectives. The most important is your opinion, promptly given as requested. For this I thank you. Regards
Travel / Re: Can This Information Be Requested Under FOI? by paribus(m): 11:58am On Apr 30, 2008
Thanks so much everyone for the input.

@Akolawole - It seems BHC in this case lacked the will to pursue any further investigations on this. However if they had, this was not communicated to the subject. I wonder if the amount of similar cases they'd probably see on a frequent basis makes this one  inconsequential for them.

@VOR - thanks for the insight on the SAB. I'm looking up info I could find on this.

@Pataki - thanks for bringing this to B_B's attention.

@big_bumper - your emphasis on the difference between the DPA and FOI was very useful.

@Funkybaby - that is my thought as well. The subject has been using this agency in Ikoyi for quite a while for tickets and knows the owner personally. Unfortunately he couldn't vouch for the staff that unavoidably handle most paperwork.

@Brownbono - thanks for the letter format.

I know I could count on the very knowledgeable guys here.

Travel / Can This Information Be Requested Under FOI? by paribus(m): 3:25pm On Apr 26, 2008
A has been a regular traveller tO the UK for about 3 years before this incident and at the time of the incident he holds a 5-year visitor's visa.

Sometimes in late 2005, A embarked upon a trip to the UK and on getting to the port of entry, the following dialogue ensued between A and the IO.

IO: "What is the purpose of your visit?"
A: "Holiday"

IO: "How long do you intend to stay"
A: "1 week"

IO asked other general questions about where A works, how long he's been at the work to which A answered without any issues. Then

IO: "Have you ever lost your passport or declared it stolen"
A: "No, not at any time before"

IO: "Have you ever been refused a UK visa"
A: "No, never"

IO: "Well I have it on record that you applied for a visitor's visa about 4 months ago, which was refused"
A: "That can't possible be, I have a 5-year visa which I applied for about 2 years ago so I should have no  reason to apply for another visa while I still have this one"

IO: "Well I'm afraid I would have to hold your entry you while I carry out further investigation. I will give you this note to tell you why you are being 'detained'.
A: This must have been a mix up. I can't possibly have applied for a visa 4 months ago.

At this point, A was given a white half-page form that indicated that he was being detained while an entry decision is being reached by the IO. He was asked to step aside and sit in one of the rows of chairs nearby.

After about an hour of waiting, the IO office came back and called A to the desk.

IO: "I'm sorry for keeping you waiting, but we have had to carry out some investigations and we concluded that you are genuinely the holder of the passport and we had no reason to believe that you are the same person that applied for the visa couple of months back"

A: At this point, relieved beyond description but deciding to enquire more on this incident.   "Ok thanks for clarifying this as this is a very embarrassing situation for me. And I would really like to find out the identity of the person that made this application as I'm sure he must have submitted his photograph with the application"

IO: I'm sorry, I am not allowed to disclose this information by law.

A: "You have kept me here over 1 hour under an alleged fraudulent visa application and you won't disclose who was behind this. it is my information and credibility involved here."

IO: "I'm really sorry sir but I cannot disclose that information to  you. You might contact the BHC in Lagos regarding this incident"

A: "So how am I sure that I won't be 'detained' in a similar manner on this issue when next I visit the UK"

IO: "I am making a note on what happened here today so that there would be no occurence"

A: "Ok thank you."

IO: "Have a good trip."

That ended on that note, A went away on his holiday and returned to nigeria a week later. However he didn't bother taking up the issue with BHC in lagos as he thought since the IO has properly investigated and declared that this was a case of identity theft, there would be no further issues on this. Although A did give a long thought about how his details could have been obtained to make that application possible. He usually keeps his passport very secure and the only places where he'd had any reason to let it out of his sight was when he submitted it at an agency in Ikoyi that helped him on a non appearance schengen visa renewal and when he gave it out at gtb for photcopying while trying to pay the vfs visa fees.

About 8 months later, A took a trip again to the UK without any issues. He got in at the point of entry without any drama.

However some couple of months later again, A took another trip to the UK, this time he had any similar incident with the interviewing IO at the port of entry.

After the usual general questions about how what his visit was  for, how long he was staying which A answered without any issues,

IO: "Have you been refused a visa before"

A: (Thinking, oh oh, not again) "No I have not and I have this being asked on second earlier visit which I was held and investigations carried out and at the end I was let go. It was clearly a case of identity theft and I thought this would have been removed the last time by the interviewing IO". Here is the form I was given the last time when this came up. (A brought out the white form he was given as he'd made sure to take this on all his subsequent trips"

IO: I'm sorry Sir but I would still have to treat this case on its own merit and carry out an investigation. I am giving you a note indicating the reason why I am detaining you"

A was then asked to step aside and sit nearby while investigations was being carried out. Where a sat, there were few people waiting with similar issues.

After about an hour again the IO officer came out and apologised to A and indicated that he would be allowed in.

A: "I really need to be sure that this issue won't happen again as this has now gone beyond embarrassment"

IO: "I'm afraid these things do happen and there is nothing much we can do about it. The information we have available from your records in BHC in lagos is read-only to us and can only be modified from there,so it's best you contact them."

A: "So was any action taken against the fraudulent applicant as this was clearly a case of fraud. If not I need to have his picture so I can instigate a criminal charge against the person in Lagos"

IO: "I'm afraid sir, that is personal information which I cannot disclose to you under the law"

A: 'But this is also my personal identity involved here so why can't his details be revealed and how will I be sure that I won't be subjected to this harrowing experience again on my next visit"

IO: "I cannot give you that guarantee Sir as each visit is treated on its own merit"

A left, went for his holidays and came back to Nigeria.

He wrote the embassy on this incident, included a scan colored copy of all his uk visas and other visas on his passport and indicated that he was willing to make physically available with his passport at the BHC just to confirm his identify and clear this issue once and for all. BHC wrote him back saying that the case had been passed to the relevant department for investigation. HOwever A heard nothing back after this.

After this a secured a 1 year resident visa to the UK and currently resided in the UK. He had no further issues at the port of entry on his last trip.

My question:  A just learnt about the Freedom of Information Act 1998 which indicates that he can request for any information held about him by any public institution in the UK. Can A request to see the information held about him and the picture of the individual that made the fraudulent application.

Also what is your view on this whole scenario.

I would love to hear from someone with good knowledge in this area. LondonCool, Akolawole, VOR, Pataki etc.

Please: I'm trying to conceal personal details here so I'll appreciate if I don't have to answer if this was me or someone else - at least not on this forum. And sorry this have to be another long post again. It is really an incident I would love to know how best it's best handled (or is it left alone). Regards

@D10 - thanks for the timely insight as well. I was thinking along this line too but I'm not sure if my finances (bank statement) would be buoyant enough while still a student. That's the reason why I'd wanted to wait till I'm through with studies and possibly working on an IGS visa. And you're quite right on your observations about decisions most possibly being made even before appearing at the interview window.

The cover letter you suggested is a good idea and I think it would make a big difference as one would be able to explain one's situation more comprehensively than you might have time to do at an interview window. However I'm presuming that they allow you to submit a cover letter with your document in a bundle (and would have perused same) before being called up to the interview window - from my recollection, this was not the case at the naija embassy, they only collect your form and payment prior to calling you up to the interview window. Like you said, it's good the guys here have a different perspective than their counterparts in lagos. Anyhow, I believe it will be well.

Good you got through the rough part of the british weather unscathed.

I'll holla you back on any more hints needed on the amex interview. Regards

My bro - how I go do. I had been on the US visa case earlier in life and when I finally got it, it was like, so this is the Almighty yankee visa and then the interest to go on the previously planned holiday was really diminished as I had gotten a UK visit visa earlier. I went for UK trip then and it has been one event leading to another in which I ended up not going. I'd really really struggled early last year to go for a couple of days before the last one expired but then preparation for uni here took all my funds and was not able to.

I'm wondering  if applying to go on a paid training programme (like an IT course or a conference) after my studies would make more sense in this situation than a casual visit. I tire for these yankee people sha, my only consolation now is that it won't be a do or die affair now like it was then while nurturing the 'american dream' some couple of years back.

@D10 - glad to hear about your success story. At least you're free of US visa wahala for another 10 years. No more early morns at walter carrington.

Till date I am hoping to take a first time trip to the US as well hopefully late this year or next year but I've been quite apprehensive on this really. Reason being that before I left naija for studies here, I had been issued with 2-year multiple on 2 occassions but was unable to make time to travel due to work pressure and both now expired (last one mar 20007). My last renewal interview was a challenge as I had to really make a case for why I didn't use the very first one.

Now I'm weighing my options here as I don't want a refusal based on 2 previously unused visas. I'm not sure if the 'couldn't travel due to work pressure' excuse would fly with these guys. I'm out of ideas on the best way to approach this but I'm hoping to put in an application once I'm able to get an IGS visa later in the year.

Good day to all in the house, I have some few questions on the International Graduate Scheme (Post Study Work) and I'm  hoping I might be able to draw on the knowledge or experience of Nairalanders here.

1. Can a holder of the IGS visa set up a limited company to work as an IT contractor.

2. Is there a definite date on when the Post Study Work Visa (under the point based system) would come into effect?

3. What is the waiting times for a postal IGS application like. The HO seems to indicate anything between 4 to 12 weeks. Can anyone indicate if they have been able to get a response within 4 weeks.

4. Are there any disavantages in going through the one-day PEO appointment or sending in a postal application with regards to an IGS application.

Just my few questions on the IGS. I'm hoping that nairalanders that have gone through this process before would be able to share their experience in this respect. I am looking at making an application after completion of my studies by September and seeks to be made aware of any gotchas. Thanks for your response.

It would be helpful if you delve more into the research question(s) your project seeks to answer or explore with regards to vpn. I'm presuming it won't just stop with setting up both ends of a vpn connection and reporting on this. Depending on the resources avaiable to you, here is what i think you might need:

1. Two separate internet connections from separate ISPs or probable just a singe one from an ISP and you can use a cyber cafe connection for the other one. If you need more control over your lab environment, i'll suggest getting two connections from different ISPs. One connection would be used to connect the private network to the unsecured public network (internet) while the other conneciton would be used to initiate a remote client connection over the public network. Internet connections from multilinks, starcomms, glo should do.

2. To an extent, you might need to subcribe to special services with the ISP you'll use for the server end as you'll need a level of cooperation from them if they are blocking VPN protocols such as PPTP, L2TP and IPSec. Otherwise you might be restricted to just using SSL in your lab.

3. A subscription to free dns services such as dyndns, noIP etc that would allow you to reach your dynamically assigned ip address remotely. Unless of course you are able to negotatiate a static public IP address from your ISP.

4. A local area network. In the minimum, you would need a switch (12 ports or more), a directory server (MS Windows Server or Linux RedHat or Solaris - depending on your resources) for users accounts a RADIUS server for remote authentication and a VPN server (or a vpn appliance - depending on what you are examining in your project) to provide the VPN connection. The server functionalities might be combined on one physical server or if you have high hardware spec, you can virtualise these servers with vmware or ms virtual server (however you can go with the physical servers if this adds unwanted complexity).

5. A laptop or desktop computer to initiate the remote client connection through the 2nd ISP connection.

The general setup would be to connect your VPN server to the 1st ISP connection and configure the appropriate VPN protocols that the server would allow a remote connection on. Like i said earlier, this largely depends on what protocols are being allowed through by your ISP but most ISPs should not usually block SSL going over port 443.  Ensure that you can reach this server either directly on the public assigned IP if this is static or use the free dns services to map a publicly accessible hostname to your dynamic IP (there might be some compexity with getting this to work). A simple telnet test to the specific port on the VPN server should confirm if the server is reachable on this port.

Configure the appropriate VPN and RADIUS settings and policies and initiate a remote connection from the laptop or desktop on the 2nd ISP connection. In this scenario, you are tunnelling through the public internet (over the Ist ISP connection through to the 2nd ISP connection) to your private network. Set up some files shares in advance so you are able to view these once connected through the VPN server.

Please NOTE: This is only a rudimentary run-through of a lab setup scenario, obviously it is not a detailed step-by-step procedure that is guaranteed to work as there are many intricate steps involved which i cannot possibly cover exhaustively here in a single post. Besides, being a final year computing student, i trust you have enough resources and capabilities to be able to build on this to suit whatever you seek to explore or examine on your project.
