In 2009, Sultan Kösen became the first man over 8 ft tall to be measured by Guinness World Records for more than 20 years. 📏

The part-time farmer from Turkey was found to be a towering 246.5 cm (8 ft 1 in), taking the iconic title of tallest living man.

Two years later, 26-year-old Sultan was measured again. He had grown even more, now standing 251 cm (8 ft 3 in)! 😲

Sultan was born on 10 December 1982, but he didn’t start his incredible growth spurt until he was 10 years old.

1. Chickens can run at 9MPH
A chicken can run a mile in about six minutes and forty seconds with a top speed of nine miles per hour.
This will vary depending on the breed, fitness level and disposition of the individual chicken.

2. Chickens do not sweat
In general chickens are better equipped to handle cold weather rather than hot weather.

This is mainly due to their feathers.

In order to cool down they will drink water or flap their wings to get rid of some body heat. When overheated they will also pant.

3. There are more chickens than humans in the world
How many chickens are there in the world?

There are currently more than twenty billion chickens in the world. For reference in 2018 there are over eight billion humans in the world.
4. Brown eggs cost more than white eggs
Some people believe that brown eggs cost more than white eggs because brown eggs are more nutritious or are organic.

However both brown eggs and white eggs are equally nutritious and white eggs can also be organic. The cost difference is due to the fact that the brown egg producing hens generally eat more and cost more to keep than the white egg laying hens.

5. Chickens do not take baths
Chickens do not take baths with water and soap.
Instead they take dust baths.

This involves fluffing up their feathers with some dirt and using it to clean their bodies. It scrubs off dead skin cells and gets rid of oil buildup. This all helps to keep their feathers fresh and clean. Interestingly if there is no dirt available for dust baths then chickens will still go through the motions. This is like taking a bath without water for humans.

6. Hens do not play favorites with their chicks
Do hens play favorites?
Interestingly hens do not play favorites when it comes to her chicks. This is perhaps very different from human parents who will probably deny it, but still play favorites.

However the chick that responds to her calls first does get the best portion of food – it truly is first come first served!

7. Chickens can recognize people
Do chickens recognize their keepers?

Yes.

Chickens can recognize and differentiate between people with different faces. Also they seem to prefer people with beautiful faces. Some traits that define a beautiful face include symmetry and proportions.

8. Chickens Are Not Colorblind
Although many people think chickens are colorblind, they are not colorblind.

Chickens actually have great vision – better eyesight than you.

They are even able to see differences in colors that we cannot see.

As little chicks they are able to easily sense their way around obstacles and can even differentiate between high and low spaces.
This all develops relatively quickly (usually in two days). For reference this level of sight development takes weeks and months to develop for other animals like kittens and humans.

9. Do chickens know their names?
The short answer is: maybe.

The long answer?

Although chickens have been known to communicate through sounds, there is no scientific evidence that chickens know their names. However it is possible that you and your chickens have experienced that – especially around the time where you feed them chickens seem to respond to their name being called.

10. The most expensive part about keeping chickens is feed
Chickens are fairly cheap to keep.

Aside from the cost to buy the actual chick or chicken, the most expensive part about keeping chickens is their high quality feed.

Building your own coop is simple and cost-efficient but feed should not be skimped on as it could lead to nutritional deficiencies.

11. Chicks start to peck at three days old
When does the pecking order begin?

Pecking order behavior does not start until after the chicks are at least three days old. Once they are sixteen days old the fighting for pecking order starts. In all female flocks the pecking order is generally established at ten weeks whereas in all male flocks it takes much longer.

12. Do hens need sunlight to develop a hard shell?
Although sunlight is an important element for a healthy hen and egg laying, sunlight is not needed to develop strong egg shells.

Instead it is the calcium from her diet that is responsible for producing hard egg shells.
13. Hens only use one of their ovaries
Did you know that hens only use one out of two ovaries in the reproductive system?

Although hens have two healthy ovaries at birth only the left one develops to maturity and functions in the reproductive system. However in some cases when the left ovary is damaged or does not work the right ovary may develop instead.
The development of one ovary instead of two is believed to help with streamlining. Streamlining helps the build and profile of a bird stay slim and aerodynamic which makes it easier for them to fly.

This is not very helpful for chickens though as they generally do not fly very far.

14. What causes double yolked eggs?
A double yolk egg is caused by two yolks being released by the ovary at the same time.

This occurs more often in younger hens with a more active reproductive system.

A double yolk egg is very rare but perfectly natural. You should not be worried about the health of your hens when this occurs.

15. Double yolk eggs do not hatch into two chicks
Double yolk eggs are always an interesting and nice surprise!

Unfortunately a double yolk egg does not hatch into two chicks. Often it does not hatch into a chick at all.

There is not enough nutrients or space to sustain the growth of two chicks inside the shell.

16. What color egg will my hen lay?
You can usually find this information online by searching for the specific breed.

Breeds like the Easter Egger will lay varying colors of eggs like green, pink or blue.

However most chickens will lay either white or brown eggs.

Interestingly hens with white earlobes will generally produce white eggs and hens with red earlobes will lay brown eggs.

17. A darker yolk is not more nutritious
Does a more darker yolk mean the egg is more nutritious?

A yolk’s shade of yellow depends on what the hen eats and not the nutrition level of the egg. If she eats a yellow corn or alfalfa then the yolk will turn out very yellow. The yolk will be a lighter shade of yellow if she eats mostly wheat or barley.

And if she eats mostly white corn then the yolk will appear almost colorless.

18. Chickens are one of the few birds to have comb and wattles
How do you differentiate chickens from other birds?

Interestingly you can differentiate a chicken from other birds by their comb and two wattles – most other birds do not have them.

19. Chickens are descendants of the Red Jungle Fowl
Where do chickens come from?

It is generally agreed upon that most chickens are descendants of the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) from Southeast Asia. Interestingly chickens were originally kept for sports and were a common form of entertainment at the time – they were not used for food.

20. A cloudy egg white means the egg is fresh
A fresh egg has a large amount of carbon dioxide trapped inside it and this gives a cloudy appearance.
Cloud egg whites usually means that the egg is still very fresh since the carbon dioxide has not had a chance to escape yet.

21. Different chickens have different combs
Combs come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes.

There are actually several different classifications of combs including: single comb, rose comb, pea comb, cushion comb, buttercup comb, strawberry comb and a v-shaped comb. All of these and their variations are perfectly healthy and normal.

22. Will I get salmonella if I eat a raw egg?
These days it is incredibly rare to find a chicken egg infected with salmonella.

However caution should still be practiced when eating raw eggs. The best thing to do when eating eggs is to wash and cook them thoroughly before eating.

You will probably not get salmonella from consuming a raw egg but it is better to be safe than sorry.

23. Can chicks survive without a hen?
With the help of an attentive flock owner chicks will be able to survive without a mother hen.

However in the wild chicks will die without a mother hen.

Although some behaviors come naturally, chicks learn many of their survival skills by watching other chickens. For example chicks do not know how to drink water at birth and must be taught to dip their beaks in water.
24. Chicks can identify their mother
Chicks are able to identify their mothers using vision and sound.

Even in the dark chicks will still be able to find their mother by communicating through noises and cheeps. Of course vision plays a large role in helping chicks find their mother as well. However do not be surprised when testing this theory if a few chicks make mistakes and follow the wrong mother hen!

25. Chickens do not need to forage to survive
As long as they are provided with enough food and water then chickens do not need to forage to survive.

However in the wild foraging is their primary source of nutrients and resources. They will spend up over half of their time foraging for food and snacks.

There was a brief silence between I and my PASTOR, Only GOD knows how I’m feeling anxious, I met only our pastor in the sitting room, I didn’t know where Mummy is, and I didn’t bother to ask cause that’s the least of my problem.
I wished I can command him to start speaking now, if only he knows how restless am feeling.
After what seems like forever to me, he finally talked… Juliet I don’t know how you will feel about this but I want you to know that I really tried my best on you two, but as things are now, you and Bridget won’t be able to stay together you will have to leave apart. {He raised up his head Abit then returned it back to the floor.}
Can anybody explain to me what he is saying? Why can’t we stay together? I can’t even live without her?
Maybe I should stop thinking about what won’t happen and listen to him. I was still busy with my thoughts when his voice I haven’t heard in awhile jerked me out of my imagining land..

I kept on thinking about what he said as I continued walking home, loosing her lovely father at this young age has battled with he so much, and now we will have to stay apart. OH MY GOD … what will I do?

On my way back home I saw Adrian with Sharon in an eatery that isn’t really far to my house, instantly I remembered the thought of living with a guy like Adrian, A smile formed on my face.
If only Adrian knows how much I like him🤔🤔 I saw how Sharon was busy forcing her head on his shoulder and I hissed…. Haven’t she seen someone to tell her that Adrian is mine.
I watched them for awhile and I couldn’t help myself but feel jealous of Sharon, after standing there like a statue for almost 10 minutes I decided to leave..
As I walked closer to the house my heart started raising, my blood continued pumping like never before, I could feel my throat drying up. Oh Lord pls help me🙇
I stoop in front of our room for awhile, but suddenly without knowing where the courage came from I decided to enter the room.
As I was trying to close the door after me. I heard Bridget’s voice behind me and with the look of things it’s obvious that she just finished eating.
First time am feeling helpless towards my sister, I wished I could make her happy forever and give her what she deserves, well maybe this is our destinies.
I faked a smile on my face, the I grabbed her two hands rubbing them against my cheek. I took her to her room, she really needs to know about what will happen tommorow.
I mad her seat on the bed while I knelt down in front of her. After composing myself about what to tell her. I somehow fathered the courage and started speaking..
Bridget you know I love you right? I asked her with a smile on my face.
Yes and I love you too sis.. but sis is there any problem, you are looking worried she replied..

I gently narrated everything that our pastor told me to her, while she listened with full attention.
By the time I would finished telling her she shocked the hell out of me😦 cause I was expecting her to feel sober and depressed…. But you know what’s funny? She still looks exactly like how she was before I started narrating to her.
Wow!! God truly answers prayer🤗 I was finally able to tell her everything although at the end she still Felt abit reluctant about us staying Apart but I refused to lose.
I tried h-rder to convince her and finally she Agreed. I hugged her really tight and finally while she backed up my hug too. We both cried on each other’s shoulders but Bridget cried more.
I car–sed her hair bit by bit till she stopped crying, since we will be leaving tommorow we both decided to Park our belongings at night and I made sure that we didn’t forget anything.
We had dinner and I accompanied Bridget to her room, before she laid down I gave her a tight hug ( who knows when next we will sleep under the same roof again) I will really miss her..
Tears threatened to find it’s way out of my eyes but I fought it back from coming I wouldn’t want lil sis to start crying to As I made my way back to my room, I thought about how everything changed so fast.. The death of my father, Us living alone, and how we will be departing tommorow.
If this really is the new direction life has turned us to I really hope that everything works out well for us.
The thought of me living with Mrs Coleman came to my mind and I smiled.😊😊 Aside the fact that Adrian will be there, I will also get to be closer to bethel oh my gosh🙊🙊… I rolled rapidly on my bed with my thoughts going on in my system. And I wasn’t aware of when I slept off😴😴😴😴

I woke up very early the next day, after which I went to Bridget’s room and met her sleeping peacefully, I stared at her face then cursed destiny afterwards.
I wished I could stay with her like this forever.
I’ve never skipped a day without seeing my sister before, and now. This is so difficult for me.
After many attemption I decided to prepare breakfast, Today is going to be a long day and also it won’t be bad if I shower Bridget lots of love before leaving.

I was frying the egg when I heard Bridget’s voice behind me. So she is awake.
Good morning sis..… she greeted me
How was your night my angel? I asked
It was fine sis.. ermm you woke up too early today, what are you cooking sis. She asked too
Well… I woke up early that I could prepare sweet breakfast for my angel.. I said to her with a big smile on my face.
I finished preparing the food, and we ate our food ( bread and fried eggs) together happily.
I’m not happy in,side of me but I had to pretend to be happy… cause I didn’t want lil sis to notice it.

After breakfast, we didn’t have anything else to do, we decided not to attend school because I wanted us to spend the remaining time we have left together.
I told her to go and have her bath and she did. And i had my bath too.
We gisted about alot of things while waiting for our pastor’ s arrival, since he promised to come and pick us himself.
Later in the evening he came, and we firstly went to Bridget’s guidian’ s house to drop her.
The new mum came out to welcome Bridget. Before leaving bridget came to meet me In the car and wrapped her small hands around my body.
Seeing that I couldn’t stop myself anymore from getting emotional, I let out all the tears I’ve been storing in my eyes on her shoulder. Lil sis cried too.
We didn’t want to let go of each other but we have to. We finally let-go of ourselves, I k-sed her forehead and promised her to check on her before that week ends.
I saw it that she was about to start going in,side with the woman, then I quickly entered the car I wouldnt be able to bear it seeing them taking her away from me.
My pastor came back after to join me in the car and I breathed out all the carbon dioxide I’ve been keeping in my noise.
( I rested my head on the seat next to me and our pastor zoomed off.
The driving was long and intense… finally we arrived at Mr and Mrs Coleman’s mansion.
I didn’t know whether Mrs Coleman has been waiting for us outside but immediately when I stepped out of the car she ran towards me… she gave me one big embrace.
Instantly I felt emotional again and I started crying, she consoled me and ushered us into the big house.
Now a new chapter of my life has been opened for me.🙍🙍

“Hey wake up….. yah late, It’s almost seven AM” I heard my lil sister’s voice Jacking me out of my sleep all in the name of getting ready for school, oh my gosh.. I don’t feel like going to school today, I don’t want to study anymore, what’s the essence of me going to school when I already know that my teachers would send me back home.
Well… in case you’re wondering who I am, I don’t think I have enough time to tell you many things about me but with the little time I have left let me tell u the few I Can. I’m Juliet Cooker.
I happened to be the second child of my mother but the fourth child to my father, it’s crazy right… well that happened because my father has two wives and my mother happens to be the second wife.
I grew up without my mum, because she left my Dad for some reasons unknown to me. Although I’ve been wanting to know the reasons why she did that.
But whenever I bring up any matter related to her, my Dad always felt sober which is why I decided not to ask him about her anymore.
Well I didn’t really care about what she did cause I had my father with me who says that it’s only mothers that can take good care of the children alone.
Well that adage isn’t true because with my father by our side we were always happy… The thought of me not having a mother had never crossed my mind.
As God will have it I’m one of the best students in my class including my school, yeah God blessed me with knowledge and understanding, I am brilliant and smart. Many teachers in my school loves me cause of how intelligent I was.
Things were going smoothly for us we were always happy, but everything changed immediately after the DEATH of my dad, my dad left us, we didn’t even know any member of the family to seek for help from after his death. I became a dullard due to too much thinking. I couldn’t even concentrate anymore in school.
It’s been six months my father died and I can boldly say it’s d worst journey of my life, feeding, clothing, and schooling isn’t easy anymore for me and my lil sis.
Thanks to my father’s cousin who has been helping us with the little she can. But now we are becoming a burden to her, I mean she also has her own family which is why she discussed about our issue with our PASTOR.
And he promised to inform few of people that he knows, about it maybe they could help. Well he called me yesterday and requested for our presence (me and my lil sis) in his house.

“Hey wake up….. yah late, It’s almost seven AM” I heard my lil sister’s voice Jacking me out of my sleep all in the name of getting ready for school, oh my gosh.. I don’t feel like going to school today, I don’t want to study anymore, what’s the essence of me going to school when I already know that my teachers would send me back home.
Well… in case you’re wondering who I am, I don’t think I have enough time to tell you many things about me but with the little time I have left let me tell u the few I Can. I’m Juliet Cooker.
I happened to be the second child of my mother but the fourth child to my father, it’s crazy right… well that happened because my father has two wives and my mother happens to be the second wife.
I grew up without my mum, because she left my Dad for some reasons unknown to me. Although I’ve been wanting to know the reasons why she did that.
But whenever I bring up any matter related to her, my Dad always felt sober which is why I decided not to ask him about her anymore.
Well I didn’t really care about what she did cause I had my father with me who says that it’s only mothers that can take good care of the children alone.
Well that adage isn’t true because with my father by our side we were always happy… The thought of me not having a mother had never crossed my mind.
As God will have it I’m one of the best students in my class including my school, yeah God blessed me with knowledge and understanding, I am brilliant and smart. Many teachers in my school loves me cause of how intelligent I was.
Things were going smoothly for us we were always happy, but everything changed immediately after the DEATH of my dad, my dad left us, we didn’t even know any member of the family to seek for help from after his death. I became a dullard due to too much thinking. I couldn’t even concentrate anymore in school.
It’s been six months my father died and I can boldly say it’s d worst journey of my life, feeding, clothing, and schooling isn’t easy anymore for me and my lil sis.
Thanks to my father’s cousin who has been helping us with the little she can. But now we are becoming a burden to her, I mean she also has her own family which is why she discussed about our issue with our PASTOR.
And he promised to inform few of people that he knows, about it maybe they could help. Well he called me yesterday and requested for our presence (me and my lil sis) in his house.

I had just been posted to Cross River for my NYSC and I had gone to the designated bank to open my NYSC account. A young man attended to me – he was my account officer. At first, we were just friends. He was Ibo and a catholic, I was Yoruba and a Pentecostal Christian, so I didn’t even think much of friendship at the time.

Along the line he asked me out. I agreed because I just loved him – I enjoyed his company and I loved his personality. He’d come over to pick me from place and we’d go hangout. It wasn’t a perfect, flawless relationship but we were good, we had our own way of getting along just fine.

Time passed very quickly and then I had my Passing Out Parade.

I was planning to return to Ibadan when he began to ask that we should get married, and he was dead serious about it. to show his seriousness, he came from Calabar to Ibadan to meet my father. My father being a calm, easy going person had no objections, but I knew that the real war was my mother. She was the opinionated one of the two of them. I summoned courage and I told my Mom. She had no problem with the fact that he was Ibo, but she had a problem with the fact that he was catholic. I put my feet down and I let my mom realize that he was the one man I could confidently say I loved and that he was my choice.

While I was at it, talking to my Mom and putting up a fight for us, he called me to inform me that his parents were not in support of our relationship because I was Yoruba. He said I shouldn’t worry and he swore that he’d put up a fight. A few months later, I was invited to their house in Lagos – that was when I met his parents and to my surprise, it went well. In fact, they told me that if they had met me first, they wouldn’t have put up any resistance, and they encouraged us to carry on with our love. This gave me more confidence to work on my Mom and I did till she agreed that I could marry him.

I had reasons to go to Lagos again and my fiancé insisted that I stayed at his parents’. He said he didn’t want me putting up somewhere else when his parents’ house was in the same Lagos, especially since they had finally accepted me. Grudgingly, I agreed. I spent two days in Lagos and when I was done in Lagos, I left for Calabar.

It is funny because his mom speaks Yoruba more fluently than me. He said that I should terminate the pregnancy because his parents would think that I am desperate to have him so I wanted to trap him down with a pregnancy.

Not long after, I returned to Ibadan.

It was then that I decided I would stop pushing for anything again. As for the pregnancy, I decided to keep it and carry on with my life. I wasn’t going to abort and yet, it was a rough period for me. I kept taking ill till eventually, I lost the pregnancy. It turned out that my friends who warned me that that too much affection will make men misbehave were right. I showed him too much affection and he misbehaved.

The most painful part of it all is that he left me empty. He took my simplicity for granted. I have not been able to fix myself since we separated. He gave up too easily and for that, I would never forgive him.

I heard that he eventually got married two Saturdays ago.

In the early summer morning of 1984, a fisherman noticed a bear cub that had fallen into the river.

He was carried by the current. The man without hesitation went to the middle of the rapid and pulled the bear cub ashore.

According to the recollections of the fisherman, the bite that day was very weak. The bear cub, apparently, was standing upstream and also tried to fish, and then could not resist and fell into the river.

The bear looked to be a little over a month old. He obviously could not cope with the current, so the man moved into the very rapids – it was much easier for an adult to stay in the river.

Standing on a hard bank, the bear cub immediately ran into the undergrowth, and the fisherman shrugged his shoulders and gathered tackle.

The next morning he again returned to approximately the same place, but after a few hours he felt someone’s eyes on him.

The man turned his head and saw a large bear a few steps away from him. He still did not understand how to react, when he suddenly saw a whole mountain of fish at her paws.

After standing for a while, the bear shook her head and left, leaving her catch as a thank you for saving the cub.

Apparently, wild animals are much smarter than people think. At least the feeling of gratitude is not alien to them.
