A university don, Prof. Elizabeth Balogun, on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, expressed her concern over the prevalence of prostitution among female undergraduates in the country.
Balogun said the sex trade had become rampant on Nigerian campuses to such an extent that 80 percent of prostitutes that patronise night clubs, hotels and
tourist centres in Ogun State are students of tertiary institutions.
Prof. Balogun,a Biochemistry lecturer at the University of Ilorin, said this at a seminar organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students to mark its 31st anniversary where she delivered a lecture titled “Prostitution on our campuses: Effects and solutions.”
The guest speaker, who expressed regret said, “It is absurd to the level that young undergraduate lady would leave normal academic chores of attending lectures and visiting libraries for further studies during the day, only to metamorphose in the evening into a call-girl or love-vendor.
“There is no doubt that prostitution in the long run corrupts the quality of the nation’s future leaders and affects their values. Understanding that
young females constitute appreciable percentage of the nation’s population, little could be expected from them productively if they had been turned into cheap sexual machines, with warped self-esteem and self- actualisation.
“Inordinate desire for affluence and desperation by many Nigerians, especially ladies lure them to engage in immoral and illicit activities, despite high
level of religiousness which Nigerians overtly demonstrate. Even the present scourge of HIV/AIDS and the menace of ritual killers that find easy prey among prostitutes, have not been strong enough to curb the rising trend of the practice.”
She urged the government to improve funding on education in order to drastically reduce cost of attaining higher education which will curb the rising trend of the practice.

Former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Dino Melaye, yesterday took to his Twitter account in a swift reply to the press statement issued by the office of the Minister of Finance, after a demonstration he led some hours earlier in the FCT against the ministry.
And just this morning, he blasts again saying I will sue Okonjo for Libel,she will have to mention those she claimed sponsored us.
In a statement signed by Paul Nwabuikwu, spokesman to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dino Melaye was described as a “disreputable” individual adding that “Nigerians are, of course, not deceived by the antics of Mr Melaye who has not known pedigree as a civil society activist or even a reputation for honour or common decency.”
He was accused of carrying out a protest sponsored by oil barons indicted and are currently being investigated and prosecuted for subsidy fraud.
In a swift reaction to Iweala’s release, Melaye in one of his tweets said: “We asked why will (minister of) finance pay oil thieves without due diligence and scrutiny, so how does this relate to sponsorship from oil thieves?”
The Kogi-born politician on Wednesday piloted a group of protesters under the aegis of Anti-Corruption Network to the Finance Ministry in Abuja, calling for the resignation of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
They blamed her of introducing bad economic policies and wrong subsidy payments, an accusation the Minister strongly denies.

My wife and I went to the voting booths this morning before work. There were 4 older ladies running the show and 3 voting booths that are similar to a science fair project in how they fold up. They had an oval VOTE logo on top center and a cartridge slot on the left that the volunteers used to start your ballot.
I initially selected Obama but Romney was highlighted. I assumed it was being picky so I deselected Romney and tried Obama again, this time more carefully, and still got Romney. Being a software developer, I immediately went into troubleshoot mode. I first thought the calibration was off and tried selecting Jill Stein to actually highlight Obama. Nope. Jill Stein was selected just fine. Next I deselected her and started at the top of Romney’s name and started tapping very closely together to find the ‘active areas’. From the top of Romney’s button down to the bottom of the black checkbox beside Obama’s name was all active for Romney. From the bottom of that same checkbox to the bottom of the Obama button (basically a small white sliver) is what let me choose Obama. Stein’s button was fine. All other buttons worked fine.
I asked the voters on either side of me if they had any problems and they reported they did not. I then called over a volunteer to have a look at it. She him hawed for a bit then calmly said “It’s nothing to worry about, everything will be OK.” and went back to what she was doing. I then recorded this video.
There is a lot of speculation that the footage is edited. I’m not a video guy, but if it’s possible to prove whether a video has been altered or not, I will GLADLY provide the raw footage to anyone who is willing to do so. We contacted Omoni Oboli who was on a retreat in Israel on Monday, November 5, 2012 and the actress confirmed getting an email where she was copied alongside some prominent names but denied dating a jeweller (names withheld) or having a relationship with the Governor. In her own words, ‘He is just my friend and I have nothing at all with him, I swear. I am not dating the Governor. I don’t know why this is happening’ The line cut and we couldn’t get the actress again to ask more questions.

KACHI ONUBOGU ‘I never chatted with her about sex’.
We spoke with Mr Kachi Onubogu, Marketing Director, Promasidor, one of the people copied in the e-mail and whose chat with Gilda was sexually explicit. Mr Kachi admitted receiving the mail but denied being the one who chatted. It was yet another honour for immediate past Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, as the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) over the weekend bestowed the Integrity and Good Governance Award on her.
Honoured alongside Prof. Akunyili were former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd.); His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, Prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria; one-time Minister of Information and Orientation, Prof. Jerry Gana; and Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan. The awards were conferred on the recipients at an impressive ceremony during the 2ndNational Award Service/Educational Trust Fund held Saturday at Methodist Cathedral of Unity, Wuse II, Abuja.
Akunyili, according to CCN President, Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia, was honoured in recognition of her life of integrity while she held public office.
In her acceptance speech, Prof. Akunyili, who is a member of the National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, noted that the award was coming almost two years after she last held public office. “It is thus yet another reminder that Nigerians do sincerely appreciate the little I was able to do with the opportunity given me to serve my fellow countrymen and women,” she said.
Prof Akunyili, who was represented by Engr. David A. Ozigi, described the award as “a good omen because appreciation has the potential of encouraging people to do more, and by doing more, we all can contribute towards making our dear country, Nigeria, a better place.”

Mr. Kawonise was on his way back from Awka, Anambra State when he was waylaid by the armed men around Ikeji Arakeji in Osun State.
They opened fire in order to force his vehicle to stop. The attackers were, however, repelled by his two police orderlies.. In the ensuing gun battle Mr. Kawonise was shot in the leg by the attackers while one of the two policemen also suffered gunshot wounds. The armed attackers later fled the scene while Mr. Kawonise and the wounded policeman were evacuated to a nearby hospital. Doctors treating the duo say they are stabilizing.
Kawonise was in Awka as the keynote speaker at the 17th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association which held at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Awka. He made the journey by road because there was no available flight to neigbouring airports to Awka. The Police have commenced investigations into the incident.

The ugly unemployment statistics of Nigeria has been highlighted by the number of applications from higher degree and first degree holders who sought employment as drivers in Dangote group. The staggering figure stands at 13,000.
Of the 13,000 applications received by the Dangote Group for the Graduate Executive Truck Driver, there were six Ph.D, 704 Masters and over 8,460 Bachelor degree holders.
Speaking during the mentor-ship meeting of the World Bank Youth Forum, Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said that the company only needed 100 drivers, but received the overwhelming applications.
According to Dangote, most of the applicants were from reputable universities and had the needed quality.
He said: “All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions which is satisfactory; and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent.
“Despite the fact that the drivers get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, the arrangement is that they will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300,000 kilometres, which is about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano and a hard working driver can complete in two years, while lazy ones can take maximum of four years.”
Analysts believe that the three tiers of government have not done enough to create employment or create enabling environment for the organised private sector to employ more Nigerians.
In a growing economy, it is rather shocking that Ph.D and Masters degree holders are seeking placement as drivers.
Martin Onyilokwu of Media Development Initiative believes that the revelation is a wake up call for government to go beyond rhetoric and start the implementation of credible programmes to improve the living condition of Nigerians.
He said:“It is no longer enough to claim that the economy is growing by this or that per cent. The truth of the matter is that Nigeria is not witnessing appreciable development. We have a situation where the living standard of the people is at an all time low as exemplified by insecurity, poverty, unemployment, massive corruption, executive and legislative recklessness. There is a need for government to wake up to its responsibility.”
It would be recalled that in the course of last week, thousands of young graduates staged protests at the Ministry of Interior in Abuja when officials denied them access to submit application forms. The ministry has since claimed that no employment was on-going.
Wherever rumour of employment is circulated, thousands of duly qualified candidates turn up to participate.

The high flood which left about three quarter of the capital city submerged is blamed for the high presence of the reptiles around human settlements.

Though there had been no reported death caused by snake bites, the number of persons treated for snake bites in the last three weeks had increased tremendously, it was learnt. Also these snakes have taken living on any livestock found around. In spite of risk posed by the invasion of these reptiles, snake hunters have been making brisk business in the last couple of weeks as the flood sacked thousands of residents from their homes.Only last week, a swamp buggy operator clearing the canal of debris and trapped water plants narrowly escaped being killed by a giant python at the Opolo suburb of Yenagoa.

The snake was said to have wrapped itself round the swamp buggy cabin trying to reach the terrified operator but could not due to the metal and fibre-glass protection around him before it later disappeared into the canal causing the man to run for his dear life.

”We are living in fear of snake bites. The reptiles are always lurking around homes and some have started to enter houses and putting small children in danger,” lamented John Aziba, a resident of Azikoro.

He urged the state government and the Yenagoa city council to as a matter of urgency fumigate the flooded areas so as to repel the reptiles incursion.

Agorowei Thomas, said if the problem persists he may be forced to consider moving out of the area.

“If the situation persist I may be force to move out. I cannot continue to live in fear of snakes invading my house,” he said adding that he had on several occasions, spotted pythons and other dangerous reptiles lurking in vegetation near the natural drain.

”I’m not willing to put my life and that of my children at risk,” he said and called on the government to act before it was too late.

Facebook and Twitter users should make up fake names and not use their real identity, according to a senior government advisor.

Andy Smith, head of internet security at the Cabinet Office, claimed using pseudonyms online ‘a very sensible thing to do’.

But his suggestion sparked claims that his advice would encourage criminal activity and was at odds with advice from ministers.

It comes at a time when the government is considering allowing people to use their existing log-ins for social networking sites to access a new government website to apply for benefits, passports and driving licences.

Mr Smith told a Whitehall conference: ‘When you put information on the internet do not use your real name, your real date of birth.

‘When you are putting information on social networking sites don’t put real combinations of information, because it can be used against you.’

Fraudsters could compile personal information ‘from Google, social networking sites, from email footers, all sorts of places’, he warned.

Criminals were capable of ‘bringing this information together and cross-correlating information and then they are using it against you’.

Mr Smith said people should give correct information when they were filling in government forms on the internet, like tax returns.

But culture minister Ed Vaizey said he ‘wouldn’t encourage people to put false identities on the internet’ even on social networking sites.

Mr Vaizey added: ‘The way of viewing this issue is that we should work with Facebook to ensure people feel secure using those sites and that there is not a threat of identity theft.

‘It’s also important for the government to work with consumers, to educate consumers about the threat of identity theft and what kind of details we should and shouldn’t put online,’ he told the BBC.

Simon Milner, Facebook’s head of policy in the UK and Ireland, told the conference he had a ‘vigorous chat’ with Mr Smith to persuade him to revise his view.

Labour’s shadow culture minister Helen Goodman said Mr Smith’s comments were ‘totally outrageous’.

‘This is the kind of behaviour that, in the end, promotes crime,’ she told the BBC.

‘It is exactly what we don’t want. We want more security online. It’s anonymity which facilitates cyber-bullying, the abuse of children.

‘I was genuinely shocked that a public official could say such a thing.’

A misleading tweet by an official of the Nigerian Presidency helped fueled nationwide speculation Thursday that Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba died in a plane crash.
Anxiety had mounted over the fate of the occupants of the ill-fated plane after the story broke that six passengers and crew, including Mr. Suntai, were aboard the small jetliner which crashed Thursday evening close to the NNPC depot in Yola.
But rather than help defuse the tension over the crash, which came less than five months after a Lagos-bound Dana-operated aircraft from Abuja crashed into a two-storey building in Lagos, killing all 153 passengers, and 10 others on the ground, the presidency added to the confusion, pronouncing the governor dead without getting confirmation from officials on ground in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
“May the soul of the late departed Governor, Danbaba Suntai, of Taraba State rest in peace and may God grant the state peace this trying time,” the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Reno Omokri, said via his twitter handle, @renoomokri.

But after this newspaper reported claims by witnesses and Taraba State officials that the governor survived the crash and was in hospital, Mr. Omokri hurriedly deleted his misleading tweet. When we checked his twitter handle at 9.25 p.m., the tweet was no longer there.
He did not offer any apology or explanation.
Mr. Omokri had in the past used his handle to convey presidential statements and information to Nigerians, and many were quick to believe the information he circulated.

Bemigho Reno Omokri, is the Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on New Media,. He is noted for using social media to conduct surveys and project the developments undertaken by the Nigerian Government.

THIRTEEN-year-old Jennifer Innocent is battling to save her life at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, after being allegedly hit in the head by stray bullet from an army rifle.
The incident happened Wednesday at the Mile 4 neighbourhood of Obio/Akpor locality in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following a scuffle between an unidentified soldier and a commercial bus driver.
Confirming the incident, Precious Innocent, younger sister to the stray bullet victim who was with her at the time, said: “I bent down during the fight between the soldier and the bus man. I told my sister to bend down, she refused. Suddenly the army gun went off and she was hit on her head.”
Shattered by the incident, Mrs. Kate Innocent, mother of the affected girl, has called on police and army authorities to fish out the trigger happy soldier whose rife fired the stray bullet.
She also solicited for assistance for proper treatment to save her daughter’s life.

A six-year-old girl has been hailed a hero after she delivered her own sister when her mum went into labour in the bathroom – thanks to watching TV’s Casualty.
Schoolgirl Francesca kept a cool head when her mum went into labour and safely delivered her baby sister
Cool-headed Francesca Goodby (Corr) calmly talked her mum Kay, 28, through the sudden birth after her waters broke in the family’s bathroom.
The youngster helped her panicking mum with her breathing, encouraging her to push, fetched her clean towels and even made sure the umbilical cord was not wrapped round the baby’s head.
Incredibly, Francesca leapt into action after remembering an episode of Casualty when a woman suddenly went into labour.
After 12 minutes pushing, Francesca successfully delivered 6lbs 8oz bouncing baby Roisin (Corr) on July 17 this year.
Dad Michael, 33, missed the drama because he was downstairs on the phone to the emergency services when Kay went into labour.
But when two ambulances arrived, paramedics were stunned to find little Francesca holding her newborn sister after she had carefully wrapped her in a towel.
Proud mum Kay said: “I was so impressed with Francesca.
“She was remarkably cool and collected for a six-year-old. She had gone to bed but woke up when I started screaming.
“She came in and was like ‘mummy are you okay?’ and said ‘I can see the head’.
“She was keeping me calm and telling me where to put my hands and telling me to keep breathing.
“And as soon as she was born she got a towel and it was like she knew what to do, I didn’t say anything to her.
“Francesca had her wrapped up and made sure the cord wasn’t wrapped around her neck.
“My husband was downstairs on the phone for 12 minutes and a few minutes after she was born two ambulances turned up.

I am increasingly hearing women say “men are afraid of relationships”. So, I felt I needed to address this concern. No, folks, we are not doing a lot of ‘churchy talk’ in this article, because I need to address this raw and head on.
Most women have seen men who never seem to settle down with any woman, but then one day they just (out of nowhere) commit to one woman. There is a deeper story here. This story has nothing to do with his fear of relationships and everything to do with his prior sexual and emotional experiences with women.
Men are Afraid
Men are afraid to end up with a woman who reflects the nature and character of the women he commonly meets. In his eyes, a common woman is one who has sex too fast (1-4 weeks), wants to rush into a relationship, or she may have a man, but will sleep with him (she may even be married, but still will sleep with him; she may be engaged, but will still sleep with him). For those of you who don’t think this stuff is going on in our world … it does.
I get 5-10 emails a week talking about the above relationship situations. I also get emails from men and women admitting having 5-8 year sexual relationships with people that their current partner knows nothing about. Plus, in over 13 years of ministry, I have seen 100’s of these types of situations. Keep in mind, I do realize women struggling in these areas have a variety of character and emotional issues and they are not hopeless. They simply have to be accountable for their actions and seek out the root cause of their pain and heal. This does not exclude the man in these situations, because he has to do the exact same personal introspection in his life. Both parties are equally involved and responsible.
Are you really a good woman?
Even women who are deemed as a “good woman” have done some “bad woman” things. “Good women” have one-night stands and suffer from perverted sexual issues. They are accepting sex in the hopes of having love. Women cheat for emotional fulfillment and men cheat for physical fulfillment. All of it is a choice.
Consider a man who has not healed from the pain, fear, and doubt caused by being with a woman we have been describing in this article. He will have little hope in every woman he meets, because both (the “good” and “bad” woman) have the *capacity* to do the same things in his eyes, because he has experienced it.
You can’t keep giving men sex without marriage
Think about it… If a man has slept with 20-30 women within the first 1-4 weeks of meeting them, his expectations of women, as a whole, is low. This is why I always encourage men and women to step up and stop having sex and start saving it for marriage. Once you look like the last 20-30 women he has been with, he puts you into a compartment. What are the compartments? “Wifely type”, “she has potential”, “sex only”, “good friend” and “I will observe her”.
I teach men that a lot of women have sex based on emotions, lust, and attempting to numb pain from past relationships. Once again, accepting sex, but really wanting to be loved or to feel better about a very painful area of her life.
Men are never ready for a relationship until they meet a woman who touches them in a special way. Men have to receive the memo from God and make the decision to get married. Saved or not, all men will desire to have sex with a woman. You will never find a man who does not want to have sex with you. The key is, will he actually discipline himself and submit his desires unto the Lord, so he will not have sex with you?
Men Have a Deep Desire for Love
Men have a deep desire for love and to share life with one special woman. Men truly want women to say no and respect themselves. I’ve never met a man who would taint the beauty of a woman when he knows he is not for her. I can recall, in my own life, two women I decided not to pursue, because I knew I was not ready to be the man I needed to be. I believe in giving a woman the very best of who I am. I never want to be lackluster in my efforts to pursue a woman. I was a gentleman and stepped aside, so another man could come in. Diddy was reportedly involved in a car accident in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening (October 24) that left him and another driver injured.

According to TMZ, a vehicle attempted to turn left in front of Diddy’s SUV when the two vehicles collided. Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene and claimed that each of the victims, including Diddy, his driver and the other driver, complained of pain. An ambulance was called, but no one sought medical attention at the hospital. No citations were issued.
Following the incident, Russell Simmons tweeted, “Glad to hear my man Puff is ok…” along with a link to the story. We’re hoping Uncle Rush knows something that we don’t about Diddy’s status.
The mogul, actor and rapper has been keeping especially busy lately balancing various projects. Many residents of South Ibie Kingdom, near Auchi, Etsako East Local Government, Edo State on Tuesday fled the community as fighting broke out between youths and the police.
The News Agency of Nigeria, reports that the fight broke out following a dispute between the monarch and some sections of the kingdom on whether to hold the Manhood Initiation Celebration during Eid-el-kabir.
The fight was said to have started on Tuesday morning when the police allegedly destroyed the “local shade’’ set up to mark the initiation ceremony by a section of the kingdom.
Following the development, a hot argument ensued between both parties which led to an exchange of gunfire.
NANlearnt that the police moved to the community to maintain law and order.
Chairman of the local government, Dr. Bruno Oshonebo, told NAN on the telephone that the South Ibie Kingdom government recognised monarch got approval from the state government not to allow any manhood ceremony to take place in the kingdom during Sallah.
He said, ”You know there is a long time chieftaincy dispute in the kingdom and each time there is a Muslim festival, there is always a problem.
“However, to forestall such problem, the state government had acceded to the monarch, who the government recognises, not to have any form of manhood celebration in the kingdom.
“This is exactly what I am trying to do, to enforce the ban on any form of celebration in the area during Sallah.”
NAN reports that though no life was lost, the situation has been brought under control by policemen and soldiers.
The Divisional Police Officer in Auchi, Mr. Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident and blamed the people for flouting government’s order.
Umar said the order to ban any form of `manhood celebration’ was to allow peace to reign during Sallah and beyond.

The Nigerian Army in Enugu has paraded 21 Enugu State University of Science and Technology students for allegedly torturing and forcing some female students to have stuff among themselves.
The students, most of who confessed to being cultists, told journalists that they took video shots of the lésbian act because they had been offered money by some influential Nigerians.
The idea, the suspects said, was to take tapes of the scenes to their partners in Europe.
Shortly before parading the suspects on Saturday, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj. Gen. Sarkin Yaki Bello, who spoke through the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, said the cultists, were arrested in their hideouts at Agbani on the outskirts of Enugu.
Bello said the patrol team of 103 Battalion moved to the ESUT following persistent gunshots at the institution on July 4 and arrested one of the masterminds of the crime, Mr Franklin Anikwe, with five rounds of ammunition.
The GOC said he had directed that a thorough investigation be carried out in order to fish out the pepetrators.
He said, “It was the preliminary investigation conducted by the division’s intelligence group that led to the arrest of the 19 other suspects. Some of the items recoverd from them are four locally made pistols, 10AA cartridges and video clips where the female students were forced to have illicit stuff with themselves during the raid.”

A 12-year-old pupil of a secondary school in Awka, Anambra State, Miss Chidimma Ukachukwu, has died after she was allegedly flogged by her teacher for failing to do her homework.
A reliable source in the school told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Tuesday that the girl died on Thursday last week after she was flogged.
The source explained that the girl fainted after being flogged severally by a female teacher and was subsequently rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where she died.
The source also told NAN that the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Uju Okeke, then ordered the closure of the school as a result of the incident.
A NAN correspondent, who visited the girl’s family home, soon after she was buried on Tuesday in Awka, reports that the family was in grief.
The girl’s father, Mr. Simeon Ukachukwu, confirmed the incident, saying it was a sad development. He added that it was an act of God.
But when Okeke was contacted, she denied ordering the closure of the school and said that the school was on midterm break.
NAN investigation, however, revealed that schools in the state were not on midterm break.
This fact was corroborated by an official of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Akwa South Local Government Area.
The Chairperson of the union in the local government, Miss Buife Ndigwe, told NAN that primary and secondary schools in the state would go on midterm break next week.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Ralph Uzoigwe, said that the matter had not been reported to the police, but promised that it would be investigated.
