Education / Buhari Reduces Cost Of UTME, SSCE Forms by Peter12396(m): 4:09pm On Nov 28, 2018 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has reduced the cost of forms for some terminal examinations like the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, organised by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Examination Council, as well as the Basic Education Certificate Examination. This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, after the Federal Executive Council meeting in State House, Abuja. According to Tolu Ogunlesi, the Head of Digital Communications for President Buhari, on his Twitter handle, @toluogunlesi, who shared the news, the reduction will take effect from January 2019. He tweeted, “President Buhari has approved the reduction in the cost of Forms for JAMB UTME, NECO SSCE and the Basic Education Certificate Examination. With effect from January 2019, the cost of JAMB UTME Form will drop from N5,000 to N3,500. NECO will drop from N11,350 to N9,850. “Minister of Education Adamu Adamu announced this just now at today’s #FECBrief. He said President Buhari directed the Ministry to look into the reduction following the significant improvement in revenues being remitted to the Treasury by the Education Agencies. “The Exam Agencies are not meant to be revenue generating bodies, they’re only supposed to cover costs/operating expenses. The sharp increase in remittances by JAMB(from less than N60m in 2010–2016 to >N15 BILLION in 2017/18) have shown that the fees being charged could be reduced.” 1 Like |

Crime / Suspected Boko Haram Terrorists Allegedly Kidnap 15 Girls In Niger by Peter12396(m): 1:47pm On Nov 24, 2018 |
Suspected Boko Haram gunmen reportedly kidnapped 15 girls overnight in a village near Toumour, southeastern Niger, the local mayor said on Saturday, November 24, Daily Trust is reporting. The newspaper reports that Boukar Mani Orthe, the mayor of the town in Niger’s Diffa region near the border with Nigeria, said about 50 unidentified armed men seized the girls in a village about nine kilometres from the town centre. On Thursday, November 22, suspected Boko Haram terrorists allegedly killed eight people working at French drilling company Foraco’s water well site in Toumour. Boko Haram has been waging an insurrection since 2009. It has launched repeated attacks into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The violence has killed thousands of civilians and forced millions to flee their homes in the large Lake Chad basin region. Kidnapping of schoolgirls has been a Boko Haram horror mark, since its fighters in 2014 kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno state, in Nigeria. It also staged this year, 2018, another major kidnap of schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe state. In Mali, French forces said they “put out of action” some 30 Islamist militants, possibly including veteran Malian jihadist leader Amadou Koufa, during a raid in the central Mali region of Mopti. The French army, which has about 4,500 troops in West Africa battling Islamist militants, did not specify whether the jihadists had all been killed or taken prisoner. The operation took place with air support on Thursday night, it said. “At this stage of the evaluation of the operation, it appears that about 30 terrorists were put out of action,” the army said in its statement on Friday, November 23, adding that Koufa and other prominent militants were probably among them. Koufa, a radical preacher, inspired the Massina Liberation Front (MLF), a group blamed for a wave of attacks that has shifted Mali’s six-year-old Islamist insurgency from the remote desert north ever closer to its populous south. |
Crime / Buhari Summons Service Chiefs Over Boko Haram’s Killing Of Soldiers by Peter12396(m): 11:26pm On Nov 23, 2018 |
Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari has summoned Service Chiefs to an emergency security meeting over the reported killing of some Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram sect along the Nigeria-Chad border on Sunday. It was gathered that the urgent meeting was necessitated by the latest security developments across the battle fields in the North East region of the country. A reliable source, who preferred not to be named, confirmed this development to NAN in Abuja on Friday. Federal Government pronouncement on the latest victims of Boko Haram insurgency was being delayed because families of the victims were being identified and contacted. “The President has called an urgent meeting with the Service Chiefs. “And the families of the latest victims of the Boko Haram are being identified and contacts made before a government pronouncement on the tragic attacks. “This, it is understood is the reason for the silence of the government over the incident,’’ the source added. It would be recalled that President Buhari had earlier dispatched the Minister of Defence, retired Brig.-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali, to Chad for an emergency meeting with the Chadian President, Idris Deby, on the deterioration of security at the Nigeria-Chad border. Dan-Ali had on Thursday briefed President Buhari on security development across the country including the recent killings of some Nigerian soldiers by the Islamic West Africa Province, a breakaway Boko Haram sect, operating along Nigeria-Chad border. AFP had quoted security sources on Nov. 21, saying no less than 44 soldiers were killed during the attacks, which occurred at Metele, a remote village bordering Nigeria and Chad. Diplomatic sources, however, told NAN that the Minister of Defence would also be meeting his Chadian counterpart during his mission to Chad, to identify what had led to the recent increase in Boko Haram terrorism in the area. The sources, who preferred not to be named, said: “Nigeria has a Chad problem in the Multi- National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which was put together to secure the Lake Chad Basin area and repeal the Boko Haram terrorism attacks against all the countries neighbouring the lake.’’ According to the sources, Chad is believed to have its own internal security challenges and this has reportedly led to their pulling away the troops manning their own border around Lake Chad. “That lacuna is being exploited by the Boko Haram terrorists, who go in and out of Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon to launch terrorist acts. “This is a clear illustration of the fact that terrorism is beyond national borders,” the sources added. When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said he was aware that the Defence Minister would be going to Chad, adding “I’m unaware of his mission there.’’(NAN) |

Politics / Jonathan, A True Democrat – Buhari by Peter12396(m): 6:22pm On Nov 20, 2018 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja hailed his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, for voluntarily conceding defeat at the 2015 general elections, describing him as a true democrat. Buhari poured the encomium at the launching of a book titled “My Transition Hours” by Jonathan amidst hundreds of guests from outside and across the country. Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, the president said Jonathan’s act of courage had made him a patriotic leader and earned popularity among Africans and other leaders. “You are a leader of the past, of now and of the future; you will rise again; I wish you the best you wish yourself, ” Buhari said. He called on Nigerians to see elections as contests and should be done in free, fair and peaceful environment. He said Nigerians should eschew bitterness, bigotry, hate speech and “promote Nigeria for us and generation yet unborn. Jonathan, however, condemned any act of inducement of voters and vote buying during elections in the country, adding that the act was contrary to democratic norms and therefore, wrong. The event was graced by hundreds of prominent Nigerians, including former Heads of state Abdulsalam Abubakar, Yakubu Gowon, ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar. The APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President Bukola Saraki, ex-PDP governors and many members of the political class, traditional rulers and members of the diplomatic corps also graced the event. |
Politics / Atiku Is A Walk-over In 2019 – Sen Ndume by Peter12396(m): 11:07am On Nov 20, 2018 |
Abuja – Sen. Ali Ndume has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, will be a walk-over for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections. Sen. Ndume Ndume, Chairman, Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service in Abuja. He said the All Progressives Congress(APC)) was not perturbed by Atiku’s emergence, adding that he was not a threat to the party in any way. According to him, the records are there for Nigerians to judge. “Next election is a walk-over with Atiku. “We were anxious when PDP was to organise their primaries but when Atiku emerged, we were glad for so many reasons. “Atiku was our Vice President for eight years and he was one of the most powerful vice presidents we ever had and we know what he did. “He was under former President Obasanjo and in his book “Under My Watch”, he voluntarily described who the Presidential candidate is. “We all know where we were and where we are now. Had it been they are presenting a new person, someone that Nigerians do not know, that may have been a threat but with Atiku, no way. “Let us analyse it. North West is where the president comes from and we are banking on our highest votes there and if you go to any part of the North West, you will realise that his popularity is unprecedented. “Then if you go to North East, Buhari is a moral obligation,” he said. He expressed disappointment that Atiku, in spite of coming from the North East, there was no record of him sending relief materials to people displaced by Boko Haram. “We have to vote for him (Buhari) because we know where we were with the government of PDP in my state, including my local government, my town and even my house were taken over by Boko Haram. “It was the government of President Muhammadu Buhari that salvaged the situation and now my people are back to our local government. “Those that are trying to take over from him or compete with him were there before. “Atiku was the vice president and one of the richest Nigerians ever, but I cannot remember Atiku taking even a bag of rice to our people that are suffering in Borno and he wants to be our president. “For me, this election is between Nigerians and the Nigerian corrupt. “Atiku’s background is known. All the show of money from him, Saraki and others is what they got from politics, people’s money,” he said. On fears that election campaign might be marred by violence, Ndume said APC would not be part of such. He added that President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the National Chairman of the party had admonished party faithful to shun violence, name calling but to focus on issues. “Yesterday (Sunday) when the `Next Level’ was launched by our presidential candidate and the president of the country, he specifically said we should go on with the campaign decently. “That means no name calling, no insult, but concentrate on issues and during our convention, our chairman clearly stated that our campaign is going to be different. “This is the first time APC government is campaigning for the second tenure so we want to campaign on issues and ideas. “We do not want to campaign on personalities and we do not want to be involved in name calling as PDP is desperately trying to do. “We will not join issues with them. They can only fight themselves,” he said. The lawmaker warned Nigerians against voting PDP, saying it had nothing to offer. He said “PDP is not new to Nigerians. They have a product that is known to Nigerians, a product that Nigerians rejected four years ago for obvious reasons. “Now we have a candidate that the marketer of that product had rejected. “We know what they did and as I said, we have been cautioned not to campaign on persons but then you have to speak the truth.” (NAN) 5 Likes 2 Shares |
