Poems For Review / Halls Of Sorrow by PIPROM(m): 12:22pm On Oct 23, 2009 |
Like ants around Pieces of cake In conspiracy to lift Sugar coated morsels In unison to holes of abode, They surround vaults. They ogle At funds deposited, Proceeds from sweats Of others brow. In three-piece attires, With smooth tongues They instill trust And lead victims To halls of sorrow. Deposits, Now free lunch For lenders without character And borrowers without collateral. Trust evaporated On burner of avarice, Vault robbers abound. By Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / Epilogue Of Warfare(poem) by PIPROM(m): 10:50am On Oct 20, 2009 |
Boom! boom!! is now silent, Heralding Epilogue of warfare. Quietness, Wind of unease Pervades the swamps. Fishes and shrimps are dead Inside waters mixed with oil. Crabs feast On the dead Washed ashore of Once revered rivers Made red by bloodletting. The half dead Nibble at crumbs From lunch plates of assailants With toothless gums, While the living, In far away paradise With virgins waiting And champagne uncorked Await more revenue From red rivers. Literature / Picture Of Apocalpse by PIPROM(m): 4:20pm On Oct 18, 2009 |
I see picture Of innocent men And women Buried alive In mass grave, With orphaned offspring Enlisted into unpaid labour, Menial occupations And sentenced To life long sojourn In gaol of deprivations. I see picture Of weeds planted And watered To grow And replace roses Transplanted on desert sand, Denied water And watched to wither. I see picture Of apocalypse Painted on canvas Of my mind. Literature / Moonlight Monologue1 by PIPROM(m): 9:54am On Oct 17, 2009 |
From this abode Surrounded by stagnant waters, With anopheles whispering Irritating lyrics into my eardrums, From this observatory, At this hour That moonlight descends, When sleep caress bodies Of men and women Imbued with morality, I see Enforcers of law In noisy bargain For exchange of weaponry With law breakers. Even scribblers Who wear garbs of piety In daytime Like pretentious prophets I can see Delivering instruments of blackmail In exchange for Currency filled envelopes. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |

Poems For Review / I Shall Sing by PIPROM(m): 10:11am On Oct 12, 2009 |
I shall sing and sing, i shall pour my heart's contents for earthlings to drink or scorn and pour down drain. I shall sing songs, songs from my homeland where nature nurtures, where healers heal with herbs, where songbirds teach mother songs at twilight. Poems For Review / Boko Is Now Haram by PIPROM(m): 9:30am On Oct 08, 2009 |
Shoved out of public citadels, Dilapidating towers of learning By rogue officials And recalcitrant teachers Whose children learn In private comfort, They march to streets Poking packets of impure water for sale Onto palms of passersby. For leisure They inhale opium And admire prostitutes In skimpy attires On dark street corners Selling virus of death. Our children May dance again On arena of thuggery In return for stipends From agbada pockets. Even after learning, They wallow in hunger And anger. Boko is now haram. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Politics / Editorial: Amnesty, MEND And The Need For Further Dialogue by PIPROM(m): 3:24pm On Oct 06, 2009 |
Source: http://www.chidioparareports..com The amnesty proclaimed for the repentant militants in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria on 6th August, 2009 ended on October 4th, 2009. It is on record that the exercise recorded considerable success with well known militants and less known ones embracing it, with the consequent surrender of armaments of different categories. chidi opara reports wishes to use this medium to congratulate all concerned on the success of the amnesty. It needs repeating here even at the risk of over emphasis that the unrest in the Niger Delta region where the greater percentage of the Nation's oil wealth is located, which happens to be the mainstay of the country's economy, took much toll on the well being of the citizenry, therefore a peaceful resolution of the crisis should be seen as a vital forward step in improving the quality of living of the citizens of Nigeria. chidi opara reports have however, noted a cog, which if not removed, may truncate the relative peace that have been achieved so far and send the Nation back to the days of crisis This cog is the refusal of the Nigerian government to engage the Movement For The Emancipation Of Niger Delta(MEND) in dialogue through its recently appointed negotiators. MEND may be faceless, but its control of fighters in the creeks which manifested in its ability to call these fighters in and out of "oil wars" makes it a force to recognised in the present peace process. It may be argued that the surrender of its commanders with their weapons have rendered MEND impotent, but need we state here that majority of the fighters who may have been trained in the use of sophisticated weaponry may not have surrendered, most may have simply dissolved into the civil society and can be re-recruited for future "oil wars"?. Need we mention also that weapons can be purchased at any time in any place and smuggled into the country through our porous borders, seaports and airports manned by corrupt and incompetent security?. The most worrisome angle is that MEND may recruit the ever available mercenaries from any of Nigeria's neighbours and use them to unleash guerrilla hits on strategic oil and gas facilities, making nonesense of the main aim of the amnesty. chidi opara reports strongly recommends that the Nigerian government should engage MEND in dialogue through its negotiators whom we think are Nigerians who have achieved success in their careers and whose love for the country may not be doubted. |
Poems For Review / Scorn Of Folks by PIPROM(m): 1:18pm On Oct 03, 2009 |
Do I need to be awake? All nights, Enveloped in illumination Of my lamp, With drops of perspiration On my scroll, And the silence Of unholy hours Threatening to scar me. Do I need to learn? Contents of this scroll And bear scorn Of folks after. From open windows of Chambers of power I see peers, War machines on shoulders In handshakes with Excellencies. Throaty laughter, Backslappings, With official crafts Waiting to take warlords Back to war zones. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / We Utter Blasphemy by PIPROM(m): 1:07pm On Sep 26, 2009 |
As bulldozers Bully homes into submission To make gardens Of peoples’ abodes While dwellers huddled On street corners Awaiting shelters promised, We swaggered to the square Five star arena Decorated in colours And opulence. In our literary frenzy We uttered blasphemy “Writers shouldn’t be activists” We preached To delight of patron devil On whose dinning table We relish vulture meals. Our guardian Angels now Are in flight To temporary exile. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / Season Of Silence(poem) by PIPROM(m): 3:00pm On Sep 13, 2009 |
Shamboli mboli Omboli mboli Mboli mboli Sham! Sham!! Sham!!! They rant And prattle Meaningless lyrics. They pour inverted scorn Clothed in garb of praise Onto tomb of sainthood. They dance Crooked dance steps In merriment, To welcome Season of silence. Yet, In their celebration, Unknown to celebrants, Sacred anthills Grow into sacred hills, Sacred hills Grow into sacred mountains On whose tops Birds of virtue perch To sing Songs of virtue. Poems For Review / He Died, I Laughed by PIPROM(m): 10:31am On Sep 09, 2009 |
As the wave Hit my eardrums Made near deaf By vile songs Of roving minstrels Carrying bags of tricks, Consciences of guilt, I chuckled And refused to enter Chamber of sorrow, I laughed And made merry. Image of law man, Justice crusader in transition Gliding heavenwards Waving to us all With sign of victory Filled my imagination. He died, I laughed. Now enrolled Into college of immortality, His stainless gown Will forever remain Without stains. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / Gani Fawehimi by PIPROM(m): 3:33pm On Sep 05, 2009 |
As he lies In confines of healer’s home In far away land With coarse hands Of flesh and blood guzzler Battling with healer’s herbs To claim and cage His fighting spirit, Gunshots from this land, Land of his fore fathers Continue to salute the lion, To salute Gani Fawehimi. Warriors Wait to welcome him To this rugged terrain, To this land Robbed of endowments And thrown Into cesspool of poverty, To swim and sink In deprivation. Poems For Review / Before We Are Buried by PIPROM(m): 9:02am On Aug 24, 2009 |
As we are shepherded Into that deep grave Dug by this oligarch Prancing around In peacock-like pride, Princes, princesses and politicians, Priests, Imams On horses back Shouting falsehood, Empty slogans at us, Rubbing pepper On our over flogged joints, As we say our last prayers, Ready to be sent to the beyond In bloodless murder, Before we are buried In the glare Of these co-conspirators, This night, graveyard, Give us our stolen virginity, Our chastity. Return our essence, Our humanity. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / We Are Marooned Here by PIPROM(m): 9:52am On Aug 20, 2009 |
We are trapped In this cesspool Of endless worries, Fears, Imprisoned in dungeon Of lost nationhood, We are marooned here. Our children Reject their citizenship, Scaling over Barbed border fences In search of nationality. Father and mother groan In pains of old age, In abandonment. We watch from afar As crisp currencies Stolen from our vault Fly all over, Perching on foreheads Of nubile damsels In seductive dance steps To lurid lyrics. We hide under Our matrimonial beds For safety And pray to heaven for protection At approach of anopheles. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / Birds Of Abuja by PIPROM(m): 9:57am On Aug 18, 2009 |
Strutting about in vain glory On well paved corridors Of power chambers, Paved with sweats Of citizens, Birds of Abuja in harlotry Descend and rummage For filthy lucre In the bowel Of the giant, Fallen elephant, Devouring its putrifying guts With voracious beaks. With exposed rumps Inviting the depraved, Shrinking consciences, Seasons of harlotry endure, Whores rule the land, Whoredom is enthroned. We are captives now, Prisoners of war, Disconnected from power chambers. We search now in waste dumps To calm our complaining stomachs. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Politics / Editorial: That Townhall Meeting With Mrs. Clinton by PIPROM(m): 3:31pm On Aug 16, 2009 |
Source: http://www.chidioparareports..com The Secretary Of State of the United States Of America(USA), Mrs. Hillary Clinton recently visited Nigeria for the first time in the capacity of a high rank cabinet member of the Barack Obama administration. The visit was the last stage of her seven-nation-tour of Africa. During the visit, Mrs. Clinton had meetings with governmental and non governmental groups. Notable among the non governmental groups the USA top official had meeting with was a coalition of civil society groups, whom Mrs. Clinton exchanged ideas with in a townhall meeting. Highlight of the townhall meeting was an address by the Secretary Of State in which she amongst other pronouncements, noted that it is up to Nigerians to effect the necessary legitimate changes in the governance of their country. She however added that the Obama administration would be ready to work with the civil society community in this regard. chidi opara reports agrees with Madam Secretary of State in this regard. This statement coming from a high rank cabinet member of a very important nation like the USA would ordinarily serve as motivation to any civil society community anywhere, serious about effecting legitimate changes in the country where it operates. Unfortunately, the civil society community in Nigeria, we dare say is unserious, unorganized, unimaginative and lazy. We make this pronouncement, bearing in mind the laudable roles a few selfless and committed activists, some living and others dead, played in the onerous task of reforming the Nigerian space. chidi opara reports salutes them. This in our opinion is the time for the civil society community in Nigeria to seize this window of opportunity offered by the current mood in Washington to get serious in the areas of imaginative strategizing, grassroots based organization and vibrant peaceful demonstrations in all parts of Nigerian against objectionable policies of government when the need arise. The era of waiting for other nations to effect the required legitimate changes in Nigeria should be over. Enough of that townhall meeting with Mrs. Clinton and other officials of other countries. |
Poems For Review / Avuvu(poem) by PIPROM(m): 10:50am On Aug 12, 2009 |
You live in tranquility, In lush vegetation. You dwell on this beautiful land, Flat landscape, This edge of Ikeduruland. Streams circle your homestead, Friendly weather And fertile farmlands Minister to your needs In this abode of rest For you And your offspring. Driven from homeland Mba ise In time past, In search of succour You traveled through Ikeduruland, Umudim, Amaimo. Now on this land Avuvu, Chukwu comforts you With worthy offspring, Good harvests. Peace massages you And neighbours marvel At your fortune. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / O’ Queen Of Sheba! by PIPROM(m): 5:50pm On Aug 10, 2009 |
When your fleet Loaded with affluence Power of new world Anchor, When your crew Usher you onto this land Defiled, Beneath red carpet On which you will walk, Blood of victims Of genocide, Rights denied, Of mandates mismanaged And buried in mass graves Will nudge your feet And shout in unison “O’ queen of Sheba! Give us justice”. His majesty New king Solomon the unwise, His co-conspirators, accomplices Will make appeal For your affluence To continue to build Temples of profligacy Where dishonest priests And priestesses Perform periodic rituals Of re-branding and re-branding. Politics / Editorial: Nigerian President's Meeting With Repentant Militant Leaders by PIPROM(m): 11:55am On Aug 07, 2009 |
Source: http://www.chidioparareports..com The implementation of the amnesty proclaimed by the President and commander-in-chief of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria for the Niger Delta militants commenced on August 6th 2009, to end on October 6th 2009. We will like to state here for the purpose of emphasis that what necesitated the amnesty proclaimation was the crippling effects of militancy on crude oil exploration and exploitation, which is the mainstay of the Nigerian economy. chidi opara reports salutes the vision, broad mindedness and wisdom displayed in the amnesty proclaimation. We also salute the wisdom and courage displayed in its acceptance by some repentant militants. We are using this medium to appeal to all those who have not embraced the opportunity offered by the amnesty proclaimation to return to normal life, to do so without further delay. We are however not happy at the over patronizing attitude of the Nigerian President to some repentant militant leaders. We are particularly worried about verified reports that some repentant militant leaders had meeting with the President recently in Abuja. chidi opara reports is of the opinion that the meeting is unnecesary and more importantly, capable of being interpreted as an endorsement of militancy by the highest institution in the country, especially by the young and impressionable segment of the citizenry. The Presidency of any country should not engage in activities beneath its hallowed office, like meeting with militant leaders, whether repentant or not. We recall with regret, the meeting between a militant leader and the immediate past Nigerian President while in office and the boost it gave to militancy, especially in the Niger Delta region. The normal course of action would have been for the repentant militants and their leaders to meet with the committee inaugurated by the government to supervise the amnesty exercise, to strenghten out issues if the need arises. The meeting between the President and repentant militants have in our opinion cheapened the highest office in the country, and have regretably sent the message across that it is better to be a militant than a hard working professional for instance. If we may ask, how many times does a hardworking Nigerian professional meet with the President? |
Poems For Review / Four Decades Plus by PIPROM(m): 12:02pm On Aug 04, 2009 |
Nineteen hundred And sixty three, August eight Mother’s womb expelled me From comfort of its walls Into this desert This labyrinth. Three years in desert sojourn, Of tottering steps In the labyrinth Roar of thunder ensued, Then another roar And conflagration. From inside the inferno I saw airplanes Deliever more bombs, Dead bodies Picketed our farmlands And kwashiorkor ate My tender skin. After conflagration, Roar of thunder again, Another roar, Another and another. The vault is now empty. Four decades plus In this inclement space Convoluted pathways, I am suffocating again In different kwashiorkor. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / Rock Of Roguery by PIPROM(m): 12:26pm On Aug 01, 2009 |
Inside the enclave, Rock of roguery, Empress revels in vanity. She frolics about in splendour And swims In ocean of greed. Vain daughters prattle on platitudes As overzealous suitors, Seekers of public offices, Of patronages, lucre Await opportunity to pounce, To take brides, Tickets to rulership home In unholy union. Loud laughter From inner chamber reverberates, Where taciturn Emperor Reigns in tacit conspiracies. Where rogues with cigars Perched between lips And cups Of stupor inducing liquors Clutched between crooked fingers Juggle nation’s destiny. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Politics / Editorial:the Pdp/ohakim Agreement Of 2007 by PIPROM(m): 5:24pm On Jul 30, 2009 |
Source:http://www.chidioparareports..com On Saturday, the 25th day of July, 2009, the governor of Imo state of Nigeria, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim in a well attended ceremony in Owerri, capital city of Imo state, declared his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ceremony was attended by notable PDP chieftains at the state, zonal and national levels. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Umaru Yar’Adua and the chairman of Board of Trustees of PDP, rtd. general Olusegun Obasanjo were present to add colour to the occasion. The high point of the occasion was when rtd. general Obasanjo confirmed that Dr. Ohakim and the PDP had an agreement in 2007. The agreement, according to the PDP Board of Trustees chairman provided that the party would support Dr. Ohakim who was contesting the 2007 governorship election under the aegis of the Progressive Peoples’ Alliance(PPA), to win the election while Dr. Ohakim after assumption of office would decamp to PDP. Obasanjo concluded by alluding to the point that that Dr. Ohakim is a “gentleman”, having fulfilled his part of the “gentleman’s agreement”. We at chidi opara reports would not want to go into the legality or otherwise of the PDP/Ohakim agreement of 2007. We are however, disturbed that a morally deficient action like the said agreement is being held up as an epitome of what should be emulated by a personality like Obasanjo, a former President of Nigeria and a supposedly elder statesman. Chidi opara reports believe that the PDP/Ohakim agreement of 2007 was, and still is, bereft of any iota of morality and so should not be held up as something worthy of emulation. It merits repeating that Dr. Ikedi Ohakim was in 2007 sponsored by the PPA to contest the governorship election of that year, he went behind the party as can be seen from media reports, to enter into agreement with the PDP. Ohakim’s action in this regard in our opinion, showcases him as selfish and desperate. The PDP on its part had no good reason to enter into such agreement, since it already controls the state and was already tipped to win the elections. The only reason the PDP had to enter into such agreement, it seems, was a desire to circumvent the order of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, to allow Mr. Ifeanyi Ararume to contest the election as the PDP candidate. Chidi opara reports believe that if we continue to hold up actions like the PDP/Ohakim agreement of 2007 as worthy of emulation, we will be pushing Nigeria further into the pit of national moral bankruptcy. |
Poems For Review / Wole Soyinka by PIPROM(m): 11:01am On Jul 13, 2009 |
Its seventy-five years Since voice of Ogun Was heard in Ake Suburb of Abeokuta Announcing birth of a devotee, Wole Soyinka, Holding pen and paper Defying masquerades and scarecrows. In adulthood In old age, He pokes his fore finger On their hideous faces, His fiery eyes Search their twisted minds. As his husky voice Seeks to stop their thievery, Altars of immorality quake And jubilations resonate In the slums, Abodes of the people. By: Chidi Anthony Opara |
Poems For Review / The Lad From Indiana Died(poem) by PIPROM(m): 4:35pm On Jul 06, 2009 |
As the stage came alive With lights, The lad from Indiana appeared. With sonorous voice And feline dance steps He lifted veil of melancholy Off humanity And lifted races high Above all bigotry. In return, Appreciative folks sang Danced and cheered. Profit mongers sneered And plotted for profits. In their profiteering They plotted “shakedowns” also And carted away huge sums In “out of court” payoffs. Indiana lad Now bankrupt left the stage, But Moved by their prodding He returned To sing and dance, To fill pockets Of profit mongers again. In the struggle Michael Jackson died, The lad from Indiana died. Chidi Anthony Opara http://www.chidiopararesume..com |
Politics / Nigeria's Oil Militants To Surrender Weapons. by PIPROM(m): 9:46am On Jun 26, 2009 |
Source: http://www.chidioparareports..com Information reaching chidi opara reports indicate that unless there is a last minute change of plans, the maiden ceremony of weapons surrender by repentant Nigerian oil region militant leaders will take place this morning at the headquarters of the Amphibious Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Portharcourt. The weapons surrender is the first stage in the amnesty proposed for the militants by the Nigerian government. The Amphibious Brigade headquarters is also the operation base of the Joint Taskforce on Security(JTF). Amphibious brigade headquarters insiders revealed to chidi opara reports that the militant leaders who are to surender weapons today are: Messrs. Tom Ateke, Fara Dagogo and Soboma George. "The weapons surrender ceremony tomorrow is likely to be by proxy", a militant group insider whispered to us yesterday. We also gathered` that Mr. Dokubo Asari, a repentant militant leader who had a security problem recently is expected in Portharcourt this morning from Abuja in connection with the ceremony. Mr. Asari, according to a contact close to him, is not surrending weapons, but was asked by the Presidency to be available in Portharcourt, "so that things will move smoothly". We were not able to confirm before publication if he will be present at the venue of the ceremony scheduled to begin by 10.00am. It will be noted that the Nigerian government recently announced its intention to grant amnesty to repentant Niger Delta militants. A committee headed by the country's Minister of The Interior was inaugurated with the mandate to work out modalities for the amnesty. The committee had concluded its assignment and submitted the report to the President. While there have been purported declarations of intentions to accept the amnesty by some militant leaders from their places of hiding, the main Niger Delta militant group, Movement For The Emancipation Of Niger Delta(MEND) have however, rejected the offer. MEND, in a news release made available to chidi opara reports and some other news organizations, debunked reports that its "senior Commanders", Boyloaf, Fara Dagogo and Soboma George had accepted the offer. The group described the reports as propaganda hatched by elements inside government who had their eyes on the billions of naira budgeted for the anmesty project. |
Poems For Review / Hibernation by PIPROM(m): 9:48am On Jun 25, 2009 |
As I lie in hibernation, In pool of affection Of Mother Muse Awash with tranquility, I reflect on battle ahead, On transgressions of oppressors And restitutions To be enforced when battle is over, When victory is tucked Inside box of national rebirth. As I lie inside sanctuary Of Mother’s counsel, Wisdom cascades onto me In righteous ablution. Yet My mind stirs in worry As thoughts of prisoners of war Held in many dungeons of oppressors Invade my tranquil mind. I stretch my hand now To drink cupful of patience. Poems For Review / Journey To Hibernation by PIPROM(m): 11:31am On Jun 23, 2009 |
From the splendours Of the homeland She called, Inviting me to come, To sit beside her And bath in the fountain. In preparation I reminisced, Wings of imagination Flew me to dreamland Where I lay on tender arms Of Mother Muse Swimming in her tender cares, Engrossed in her counsel. It is journey time, Time to answer Mother’s summon again, To make journey to hibernation And consider Options in the warfare, Time to renew holiness And be fortified again. goddesses wink And send us On a journey To the vicinity Of their supple frames, Imaginations Suture our troubled minds. In our reveries Their felinity call Inviting us to caress, But We must retreat To Ime Obi Away from mundane ness To prepare for cleansing. Poems For Review / Apostles Of Annulment(poem) by PIPROM(m): 10:31am On Jun 15, 2009 |
We have withered In the mild heat. We have placed Our honour, Our dignity On slaughter slab To be slaughtered And make mince, Our courage is on flight. Plastic guns trained On our faces Menance our resolve, We stand terrified, Shivering like drenched apes While apostles of annulment Jab butts On our chattering dentitions. Yet We gaze skywards, We jabber supplications And offer libations For de-annulment of our mandate. By: Chidi Anthony Opara http://www.chidiopararesume..com |
