Business / This Will Inspire You- How Sophia Amuruso Made $250 Million From The Internet ! by PNN: 5:45am On Dec 07, 2013
You know what, there’s actually no shortage of ideas out there. For days now, I have read blogs, spoken to people, watched the news, seen forums, and I’m wowed at the sheer volume of ideas out there. I’m sure if you take out 1 hour today, you will come up with loads of ideas.

But more important, knowing genuine consumer needs, having consumer insight and how to design, are what’s actually in short supply.

Sophia Amoruso might not be a familiar name to you, maybe you might not have even come about her company Nasty Gal, but she sure is going to be a force to reckon with. She didn’t come up with a tech innovation, or anything like that, she just did, what most people I know do on eBay -sell stuffs, and now she’s worth an estimated $250 million by Forbes.

And how did she amass this? She started off selling vintage clothes on eBay. In an interview with TheCut she said “Some of the best things that I ever sold on eBay, I bought on eBay, just for way less.” In 2006, Sophia Amoruso started by buying vintage clothes and accessories from stores around and then got her friends to model in them, she took and posted their pictures and then sold them off on eBay, and so did her business start, she called her eBay shop “Nasty Gal”. One of the first few sale that took her by surprise was when she sold an eighties Chanel Jacket for $1,000 which she had bought for just $20.

By 2007, Sophia Amoruso had 30,000 “friends” on MySpace, was doing roughly $115,000 in sales and netting $20,000. And in June 2008, after a couple of complaints from other sellers, she was kicked off eBay. Many others would have seen this as a major setback, but she saw it as an opportunity, and within weeks she launched her own retail site, and now, fast forward 2012 she is on track to make $128 million in sales with over 150,000 customers in more than 50 countries and over 50,000 followers on twitter.

You definitely can turn your constraints to a blessing, Sophia’s choice of friends as models- (because she didn’t have money to hire professional models), was one of the factors that paid off for her, because consumers could easily relate with the people wearing it, rather than seeing the clothes on professional models. Also, her decision to go ahead with her own retail site, after been yanked off eBay.

Business / Lessons From First Bank Sme Forum For Enterpreneurs by PNN: 12:02am On Dec 07, 2013
Many businesses – small, medium or big direly need some sizeable amount of money for expansion. While big businesses find it somewhat easier to access loans, small and medium enterprises usually have a hard time accessing these funds from institutional lenders. But this does not have to be if the small business operators entrench certain values in the business structure. At the FirstBank SME forum that held recently in Lagos, some vital lessons came to the fore.

After the FirstBank executives gave assurance of the bank’s willingness to fund SMEs, the small business operators complained about the cost of funds – the interest rates charged by commercial banks, currently about 27 percent. Peter Bamkole, director, Enterprise Development Centre of Pan Atlantic University, a panellist at the forum, urged the operators to be more focused on being able to access the funds and not the rate of the funds.

Ibukun Awosika, group managing director, Chair Centre Group, who was the keynote speaker at the event, said: “When you are starting a business, there is a price you must pay, but you must know why you are paying that price. It cost you more to get money at the beginning. Even though the money is expensive, it allows you to bring your vision to life. The important thing is to use that as your driving force, once you know your cost is high, as you do every transaction do not consume your profit but retain a large part of the profit to reduce the debt you will take on next time.”

She added that as business owners continue doing that, they will get to a point where the money they borrowed expensively was small compared with the total amount of money they use for the business and will eventually free themselves of debts. She then urged people in business to delay enjoyment of the benefits till later and use the business to grow the business.

Awosika then cited the example of how she started her furniture making business with no capital, had to take very expensive loans but always pumped in the profit to grow the business and had to delay many gratification. She recounted the touching story of a N1 million loan she took in 1992, at a time finance houses charged as high as 70 percent interest rate on loans because that was the only access she had to the funds she needed when her business desperately needed to relocate or die.

She said: “In 1992, someone gave me a N1 million loan, took the money to a finance house and every 90 days, I must pay a part of the loan and the interest. But I knew it was a matter of life and death for my business, and I was willing to pay that price. I took the money, didn’t know how I was going to pay back, but what is life without risk?”

Explaining how she used the funds, she said, “I moved from the workshop we were using into an uncompleted factory, renovated it and bought the used machines of furniture factories that were folding up. Simply for creating that bigger factory with my workforce, I could then go and search for bigger jobs, because by taking the expensive loan, I had created the capacity to get bigger jobs.”

Politics / Tributes To Nelson Mandela From Around The World by PNN: 8:00pm On Dec 06, 2013
Just hours after the death of the great African Hero Nelson Mandela, tributes have continued to pour in from all over the World.

We share with you tributes from around the World to the Legend.

President Goodluck Jonathan: “Mandela’s indefatigable spirit will continue to inspire present and future generations of Africans.”

Barack Obama: “I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s life...Like so many around the globe, I cannot imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set'

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu : “Mandela’s death signals the end of an era of the generation of African leaders who never coveted power, but used power for the good of the greater number of their people. Africa has indeed lost an Icon, a formidable figure, a man of character and conviction and a political leader unequalled in the history of Africa. His demise is a great loss to Africa.''

Bill Clinton: “Nelson Mandela taught us so much about so many things. Perhaps the greatest lesson, especially for young people, is that, while bad things do happen to good people, we still have the freedom and responsibility to decide how to respond to injustice, cruelty and violence and how they will affect our spirits, hearts and minds.

Webmasters / How did Social Media impact your Life ? by PNN: 4:59pm On Dec 06, 2013
Well, we can't help but recognize the impact of the Social Media. I believe the 'Go and Die' Widow should be thankful to social Media. The video where she wept attracted public outrage over the way She was treated by the Governor. Today, She is Millionaire and Special Assistant to the Governor!!!
Social Media has created new jobs, businesses etc Some people are Professional bloggers; an example that readily comes to mind is the popular Linda Ikeji.
Well, lets make this interesting; share how Social Media has impacted your life. What have you gained from social media this year?

It has given me the opportunity to share great information on www.proudlynigerian.net. I have learned so much through google and youtube.

There is so much 'fakeness' in Nigeria now. People claiming to be 'who' or 'what' they are not. So many ways to 'Package' and 'belong' meanwhile deep down People know they have nothing and cannot really afford the type of 'lifesyle' they want to show the world. According to some one ...

Phrases you never use on the island:

1. i can’t afford it
2. it’s too expensive
3. I bought it on sale

21 ways to be a better Nigerian this year...

1. Respect the rights of others.

2. DO not insult Nigerian Leaders (e.g. the President, Senators and Governors). Insults have not changed anything and it is very unlikely that it would bring positive result to you or Nigeria. However, constructive criticism could help.

3. DO not blame the Nigerian Government for your personal problems. Blaming the Government does not change anything. People are making it legally in the Country. Take charge and find solution to your problems.

4. Pay your taxes. It pays to be responsible.

5. DO not condemn other religion or claim that your religion is superior to the religion of another person. This is not an argument any human being can win and the desire to win this argument continues to spell doom for human beings.

6. Do not say negative things about any part of the Country because you are not form there. Those who live in glass house should not throw stones and moreover no part of Nigeria or anywhere in the world is free from problems.

7. STOP predicting negative future for Nigeria; you should not be a 'Prophet of doom'.

8. DO not support any form of crime by your words or action. There is no excuse for committing a crime.

9. DO not rejoice when something bad happens just because it happened to a Politician or someone in Government. It only shows that you are opening your heart to evil.

10. REPRESENT all that is good about Nigeria in your business and personal life. When the good people that make Nigeria great are to be counted, you should be able to stand up.

11. DO not focus on the problems of Nigeria except you are planning a solution.
12. THINK of ways to support the Government at the different levels to make progress in Nigeria.

13. STOP spreading bad news about Nigeria. It is not helping and know that if you are not part of the solution to a problem, you are part of the problem.

14. PRAY for Nigeria because when it is well with Nigeria, it is well with you and your family.

15. Build a strong relationship with your fellow Nigerians; united we are stronger.

16. CELEBRATE all that is good about Nigerian (the people, culture, places and much more). If you don’t celebrate the good in your country, you cannot expect a foreigner to do it for you.

17. PATRONISE very well made in Nigeria goods. We have so many of them.

18. VISIT different places in Nigeria this year. You cannot experience the best of Nigeria from one place.
19. INVEST in Nigeria. Nigeria is a fast developing economy that is yielding good return on investments. Ask successful Entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

20. DEVELOP a Personal social responsibility this year. You have been complaining since last year and yet nothing has changed. Put your passion, energy and money into something will create positive change in the Society and Nigeria as a whole.

21. UPHOLD then glory and honor of Nigeria. Be Proudly Nigerian!

Business / The Richest People In Nigeria And Secret To Their Success !!! by PNN: 3:49pm On Jan 18, 2013
The Richest People in Nigeria and Secret to their Success

Have you ever wondered how Aliko Dangote emerged the richest black man in the world? Have you ever wondered how the richest people in Nigeria became rich? Have you ever tried to find out the exact success secret of Nigeria’s billionaire entrepreneurs? Well, this article is going to put all your answers to rest.

In this article, I am going to spill the untold success secrets of the richest people in Nigeria and how they became billionaires. If you are prepared to replicate these success secrets, then below are the untold success secrets of the richest people in Nigeria.

The Richest People in Nigeria and Secret to their Success

1. They are Strong Willed

The richest people in Nigeria are strong willed in spirit. They are dogged and persistent. To these set of individuals, success is not an option; it’s a must. These successful Nigerian entrepreneurs refuse to be held down by their circumstance; instead, they reached out for their inner strength and went for success. Above all, these entrepreneurs don’t take no for an answer; they simply refuse to give up and that was why they succeed.

“When Raymond Dokpesi was on the verge of losing A.I.T; he refused to give up.

Mike Adenuga had his telecom license revoked twice and lost over 20million dollars but he refused to give up.

Orji Uzor Kalu had his oil bloc license and his aviation license revoked; his airline business was grounded and the business accounts of his publishing firm (The Sun) was frozen, yet he refused to give up.

Chief Cletus Ibeto’s cement company was shut down by the government but he persisted and refused to give up.

So if you are ever going to have your name listed as one of the richest people in Nigeria; then you must be prepared to stick it through to the end. You must never give up.

2. They thoroughly understand their line of business

Take a close look at the Nigerian billionaires listed above and you will see the names of entrepreneurs that thoroughly understand their line of business like the palm of their hands. They know the in-depth intricacies of the various businesses they are involved in.

Cosmos Maduka, the billionaire founder of Coscharis group even liken himself to a first class degree holder from the University of Automobile Spare Parts. This goes a long way to prove to you that knowing your line of business is essential to success not only in business but life in general.

3. They are focused

The richest people in Nigeria are focused; they chose a specific business of their strength and stuck to it. If you are ever going to make it in Nigeria, then you must obey the first law of business success of Andrew Carnegie; the steel mogul.

“And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret. Concentrate your energy, thoughts and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged in. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line; to lead in it. Adopt every improvement, have the best machinery and know the most about it.” – Andrew Carnegie

If you think this statement is a mere fad, then think again because it’s the truth in its entirety. Aliko Dangote focused on commodities and basic needs while Femi Otedola concentrated on oil and gas. Cosmos Maduka and Ade Ojo focused on automobiles; Fola Adeola focused on banking, Leo Stan Ekeh concentrated on computers and Raymond Dokpesi focused on broadcasting and entertainment. This should tell you that concentration is a key factor to succeeding in business.

4. They have a strong business mission and vision

The Nigerian billionaires have a strong business mission and vision; and these two factors propel them to greatness. Take away their business mission and they are no more; this is because their entrepreneurial spirit is in the mission of their businesses.

Take for instance Aliko Dangote, he is on a mission to provide the basic needs of over 150 million Nigerians; Femi Otedola is out to provide Oil and gas at a uniform price with faster delivery.

Fola Adeola is on a mission to provide innovative banking services to Nigerians; Leo Stan Ekeh wants to put a computer in every home and Raymond Dokpesi is out to give Nigerians uncompromised news and information on happenings. A strong business mission and vision is the reason these men emerged successful.

5. They are excellent networkers

The richest people in Nigeria became rich because they are good networkers. They network among themselves and even patronize each other’s services; and when a big deal is on board, they pool their resources together, form a consortium, execute the deal and split the profits. This is why they emerged the richest people in Nigeria.

The Richest People in Nigeria and Secret to their Success

6. They are Competitive

The Nigerians billionaires listed above are very good at networking with each other; yet, they still compete against each other when the need arises. You can see an example of this when Aliko Dangote used MRS Group to compete against Femi Otedola for the shares of Chevron Nigeria. The richest people in Nigeria know that nothing comes easy and life is not fair; so they fight with all they’ve got to stay in business. Competitiveness and the ability to stay afloat are essential to survival in business.

7. They think big

One attribute I love about Nigerian billionaire entrepreneurs is that they are big thinkers. They think big and love to do big things. Despite the fact that they started small; they dreamed big.

Aliko Dangote is the largest cement manufacturer in Africa, Femi Otedola is the largest diesel importer in Nigeria; Jimoh Ibrahim runs Nicon (the biggest insurance company in Nigeria) and Raymond Dokpesi owns the first indigenous cable network television in Nigeria. So if you are going to leave a legacy in life, then you must think big and act big.

8. They are flexible

Flexibility is one of the strengths of the richest people in Nigeria. They understand the terrain very well; they know that the government is the most inconsistent body so far, so they prepare themselves forehand.

They keep an eye on the ever changing pattern of the government and swiftly adjust their businesses to align with such change. They are also quick to adapt to current situation and trend while their competitors are still grappling with the reality on ground.

9. They are opportunist

The richest people in Nigeria are opportunists; they know how to take advantage of situations. Where others see problems, these set of individuals see opportunities and start a business around such opportunity. While other Nigerians shy away from adversity; these men embrace adversity because they know that behind every adversity is opportunity.

“Behind every adversity is an opportunity. If you lament over the adversity, you will miss the opportunity.” – Ajaero Tony Martins

They know that wealth lies in their ability to convert problems into opportunities and value; just like the ancient alchemists that tried to turn lead into gold.

“A good businessman must have nose for business the same way a journalist has nose for news. Once your eyes, ears, nose, heart and brain are trained on business, you sniff business opportunities everywhere. In places where people see a lot of obstacles, I see a lot of opportunities. At times, there is something instinctive in me that tell me a business opportunity exist even at a place where others see nothing. That is what makes me different, maybe unique. A good businessman sees where others don’t see. What I see, you may not see. You cannot see because that is the secret of the business… the entire world is a big market waiting for anybody who knows the rules of the game.” – Orji Uzor Kalu

10. They have a strong business management team

It is often said that behind every successful man is a woman. In this case, I will say that behind every successful entrepreneur is a strong business management team. The presence of a business team is the reason why Nigerian billionaire entrepreneurs and richest people can swiftly take advantage of opportunities; raise capital and run multiple businesses while minding their family affairs. A business team is vital in your transition from a small business to a big business.

11. They love Nigeria

Above all the success secrets of the richest people in Nigeria, this is the greatest. Love for Nigeria made the Nigerian billionaire entrepreneurs invest heavily in the country. They have all it takes to move their investment elsewhere but they chose to invest in Nigeria because they believe in Nigeria.

This factor is so prevalent that even Aliko Dangote advocated the need for entrepreneurs to firmly believe in Nigeria; instead of going abroad in search of greener pasture. This is to say that if you must strike it rich in your country; then you must believe in your country.

As a final note, these are the eleven secrets that are responsible for the success of the richest people in Nigeria. If you want to join this list of Nigerian billionaires; if you want to imprint your name on the sands of time, then replicate these strategies and I will see you at the top.

Politics / Re: Why Do We Call Ourselves Nigerians??? by PNN: 3:58am On Jan 18, 2013
NnamdiN: Because some people(inluding me) are ashamed of coming from "there". I associate more with my state or region than the supposed "country". Imagine telling a foreigner (with a straight face) that you are nigerian kai lol
Well, this is not what the topic is about. It is about why we as Nigerians should not talk about NIGERIA and Nigerians in a negative way.
Politics / Why Do We Call Ourselves Nigerians??? by PNN: 5:45am On Jan 17, 2013
In our everyday life both at home and abroad, I hear Nigerians talk about Nigeria and their fellow Nigerians as if they are foreigners. Examples of comments by Nigerians include these phrases "that is how Nigerians behave...' 'Nigerians ehh !!... , 'i don't trust Nigerians!!! , 'useless Nigerians', 'Nigerians love crime'....
The aim of writing this is to promote the fact that we need to stop this attitude...We are Nigerians and we should talk about people individually without giving the Country a bad name...WHY MUST WE NIGERIANS CALL THE NAME OF THE COUNTRY WHEN PEOPLE MISBEHAVE? SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCES

1. Life

It's easy to forget that the mere fact of conscious existence--that you are alive--is itself a miracle. As the old saying goes "every day above ground is a good day."

2. Health

Rather than thinking of illness as something bad that happens to you, start thinking of health as something good that's happening to you.

3. Purpose

There is nothing more conducive to long-term happiness than knowing that your actions are making the world a better place.

4. Friendship

Almost everyone has friends, although it's easy to lose track of them in the rush of events. Take a few minutes--today--to reconnect with some of them.

5. Family

If you've got a good relationship with your family, rejoice! You're experiencing one of the deepest sources of happiness on the planet.

6. Self-reliance

Feeling secure that you can count on yourself to accomplish what you set out to accomplish creates a quiet but potent happiness.

7. Community

Having the support of a wider group makes you more aware that you're part of something greater than yourself.

8. Gratitude

Rather than focusing on what you don't have or what's out of reach, be thankful for the wonderful things already in your life.

9. Laughter

It is impossible to laugh and be miserable at the same time. Regular doses of laughter are more than medicine... it's the flavor of life.

10. Love

'Nuff said.

Create these ten things in your life and I guarantee that you'll either become more wealthy or, if not, you won't really care anyway because you'll already have what's important.
