SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Nigerian Army had deployed combat helicopters, gun trucks, and soldiers to search some forests in the South-East states where the ESN was suspected to be camping.

A joint operation of the Nigerian Army and police has led to the death of about 16 operatives of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a military source told SaharaReporters on Wednesday.

The source said hundreds of security operatives on Tuesday night launched a heavy attack on the camp of ESN in Aba, Abia state, killing about 16 of them and injuring others.

SaharaReporters gathered that the operation was in response to a series of attacks against security personnel in the South-East.

Not less than 20 security operatives have been killed in the region by unknown gunmen in the last three months.

Police stations are also not left out in the assault as three of them have been razed in 2021.

Three policemen were killed in a fresh attack in Ohafia LGA of Abia state on Monday.

The officers were killed while on a ‘stop and search’ operation in Abiriba town.

The gunmen were said to have ambushed them and carted away their rifles not long after they arrived in the town for a routine operation.

The slain police officers were identified as Austin Ugwu, Longinus Ugochukwu, and Ama Ifeanyi.

IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, had in December 2020 launched ESN to protect the people of South-East and South-South regions from terrorists and bandits allegedly trooping in from the North.

Kanu described the outfit as a replica of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, earlier launched by the governors of the South-West to curb insecurity in the region.

“The sole aim and objective of this newly formed security outfit known as Eastern Security Network is to halt every criminal activity and terrorist attack on Biafraland,” Kanu had said.

“This outfit, which is a vigilante group like the Amotekun in the South-West and the Miyetti Allah security outfit, will ensure the safety of our forests and farmland which terrorists have converted into slaughter grounds and raping fields.”

He added that the establishment of the security outfit became necessary following what he described as the “failure” of the governors of the South-South and South-East to put in place measures to protect the people in those regions.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Nigerian Army had deployed combat helicopters, gun trucks, and soldiers to search some forests in the South-East states where the ESN was suspected to be camping.

Recently, it was learnt that some Nigerian soldiers resigned and joined the ESN, on the grounds that the ESN, being funded by both international and local donors, had better welfare packages for its officers than the military.

“The Kanu ESN boys are not a bunch of rookies and untrained fellows brandishing guns. I personally know five guys from my hometown in Anambra State who left the Nigerian Army to join the ESN. Two of them were formerly serving in Operation Lafiya Dole, Borno State, before they quit.

“We are being reliably informed that there are other soldiers, particularly of the South-East extraction, who will soon leave for other various reasons and they are likely to be recruited into the fold,” a military source told SaharaReporters.

In July 2012, about 356 soldiers in the North-East and other theatres of operation had resigned from the army – some on voluntary retirement, while others cited loss of interest as their reason for disengagement.

The soldiers had written to the former army chief, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, on July 3, 2020, under Reference NA/COAS/001, quoting the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/rating/airmen (Revised) 2017.

The approval of the voluntary disengagement of the 356 soldiers was contained in a 17-page circular from Buratai, AHQ DOAA/G1/300/92, signed by Brig Gen T.E. Gagariga for the army chief.

Again, this January, another batch of 127 soldiers resigned from the Nigerian Army and are due to leave by May.

They comprised one Master Warrant Officer, three Warrant Officers, 22 Staff Sergeants, 29 Sergeants, 64 Corporals, seven Lance Corporals, and one Private.

The 'conquered territory' dynamics playing out in the SE is disturbing and interesting at the same time. A radical group whose leader isn't in Nigeria wants secession but the region's socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo and the governors in the region are all in a hurry to sell IPOB, ESN and Kanu out in other not to incur the wrath of the center.

The killing of Igbo sons on their home soil CAN NOT happen in the SW, SS or North as a whole! "Repentant Boko Haram members" were rehabilitated and fed for months before being released into the society whereas IPOB members are shot on sight.

The SE governors are either spinless or deliberate and comfortably silent and selling their own over pleasing Northern oligarchs is very troubling.

Sunday Igboho, today is untouchable because prominent Yoruba sons and daughters are solidly behind him. Why can't Igbo governors do the same with their sons, the IPOB and Kanu?

I am still wondering how the army and police figured out those killed are truly ESN members. Sighs.

I'm all for the killing of every criminal elements in the East as long we have some sanity and peace... But I've got a very uncomfortable feeling these dead bodies belong to innocent youths the army took away and killed out of frustration... We've seen this script play out many times before.

Nnamdi Kanu needs to restrategize. Too many Igbo youths getting wasted over his methods. He can't even supply ESN with weapons so they are having to sack police stations to steal their weapons. For how long must this continue?

Lies and propaganda!

ESN has no business on the streets of Aba. If this news is true, these cowards have gone on a shooting spree killing innocent passers-by and tagging them ESN.

By the way, there's nothing like ESN camp anywhere in the South East. ESN officers operate from their individual homes and are deployed in remote villages where Fulani terrorists are wrecking havoc

I wouldn't even blame Kanu much. SE leaders are comfortable with selling out their sons but the sons are stupid to believe a man that is in the UK enjoying his life.

Kanu has no plans. He is only a rabble-rouser who doesn't understand that he is at a great disadvantage whatever he does. He is not in sync with leaders of thought in the SE, does not regard them and they don't even send him. The governors on the other hand will easily side with the center to kill their own people just because they see the IPOB as a ragtag outfit and rightly so.

People who have died on account of NK's recklessness and military might are so much now that he probably sees this as just another bad day in the books of the IPOB.

If his plan is to call on the UN and ICC then he obviously doesn't have a plan.

Not holding a brief for the ragtag military but abuse can only go on for so long so far there is an enabler. The governors are responsible. The last time, it was Hope Uzodinma who invited the military to Orlu, at some point, Obiano had ordered the army to flush out IPOB from Anambra, Umahi has done the same.

There is a reason why this can't happen either in the SS or the SW.

Since it happened in Abia state then no problem.

Even Abia govt commended the gallant military officers.

Abia state should start using their head on Nnamdi Kanu's issue. They are not the only Biafrans in this estate.

Meanwhile They should go and deposit their corps at radio biafra online london for Nnamdi Kanu to gulp their blood..

Where are those smiling when the unknown gunmen were doing same.. .Well the soldiers are now smilling back

Tactless entities....May the souls of the departed ones rest in peace and also those yet to be gunned down...all their souls should rest in peace in advance..
