musicology: How nice it would be if I could say “you just stop” and it actually be possible to do so. Well, you have taken a really big step in realising and stating that you have a betting addiction Asking the question here is a very important start that proves you are already thrown in that battle to win your addiction. Congratulations! Deciding to stop doing something you enjoy can be challenging, there may be times when it feels impossible but remember lots of people have quit betting. NEVER CHASE LOSSES :- Never ever try to cover up previous loss by betting again and again hoping to recover the previous loss. Betting in this way will make things even worse if you loose consecutively. You don't need to do that because as long as you keep this mindset of chasing the shadows of your losses through the same scheme that has caused your depression, then there will be no light at the end of the tunnel. It will always be a vicious circle of more losses, regrets and frustration. FIND OUT : Find out what triggers the habit and get rid of friends that cause you to bet. Only you know what these triggers are. 2 Likes |

"1. Understand the Problem** You can’t fix something that you don’t understand. To eliminate gambling from your life, you must learn about the issue and admit you have a gambling problem. The American Psychiatric Association identifies gambling as a mental health disorder similar to addictions triggered by alcohol and drugs. You might have a gambling disorder if you have: The powerful need to gamble with larger amounts of money Feelings of restlessness or irritability when not gambling Made repeated and unsuccessful attempts to quit gambling Found yourself completely preoccupied with gambling Noticed you gamble to manage stress Continued gamble to “get even” Lied to friends, coworkers and loved ones about gambling Lost relationships or created conflict about gambling Needed financial support Be honest with yourself when you look over the symptoms of gambling disorder, or even better, ask a loved one about their opinion of your gambling for a clearer understanding. Stop denying and start seeing the negative effect gambling has on your life. 2. Join a Support Group** Now that you have recognized the problem, you can seek assistance from a support group. Support groups are organizations maintained by people with similar experiences and pasts. Though support groups lack professional interventions, they are free to try out in person or in online chat rooms. Gamblers Anonymous is one support group specifically built around the needs of people with gambling problems. The group is based around the familiar 12-step approach used by other support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. For more information on support groups for gamblers, you can contact the gambling hotline at the National Council on Problem Gambling. They offer voice and text support for people with gambling issues and can point you toward helpful group options to manage the trials of gambling addiction. 3. Avoid Temptation** Gambling is a temptation, but seeing gambling as an addiction is a significant step because it permits you to use skills from addiction recovery and relapse prevention. For someone in recovery, avoiding people, places and activities linked to gambling can help them avoid a setback. By avoiding these triggers, you can avoid the thoughts and feelings that encourage gambling. So, if driving by a casino after work sparks thoughts of gambling, take an alternative way home. If watching sports makes you want to bet on it, consider watching something else. Cut up your credit cards and let your spouse handle the checkbook. It may seem like an inconvenience, but just as a person with a drinking problem should not go into a bar, you have to identify and avoid your triggers. Work with a loved one on your list of triggers and find ways to avoid the temptations to reduce the risk of gambling. 4. Postpone Gambling** With addictions, there are cravings. Cravings are strong urges to complete the desired behavior. As a gambler, you could have cravings to call your bookie, go to the casino, cash your paycheck or other behaviors linked to gambling. Cravings are intense, and while you are in the middle of one, it feels like it could last forever. It will not, though. All cravings have a beginning, middle and end. So as long as you can postpone your gambling, you can maintain recovery. An excellent way to approach this issue is by paying attention to your cravings, what they feel like, what you think about during the craving and how long it tends to last. By studying the craving, you begin to take away its control over you. Once you build an understanding of the situation, you can list a set of thoughts or actions to distract from the gambling. Perhaps, deep breathing or calling a friend when a craving hits will be the best ways to postpone gambling. 5. Find Alternatives to Gambling** Avoiding triggers and distracting during cravings are great ways to deal with gambling, but to improve your state, you’ll need to find healthy alternatives to gambling. By replacing gambling behaviors with positive ones, you shift the focus away from the bad and towards the good. Some gambling alternatives include: Physical activity (e.g., going for walks, weightlifting, team sports or yoga) Meditation Spending more time with friends and family who do not gamble Volunteering at a hospital or animal shelter Exploring new hobbies Traveling Just think of the fun, beneficial alternatives you can explore with the extra money you have from not gambling. 6. Think About the Consequences** Shame and guilt are strong feelings for anyone in recovery from addiction. Shame and guilt can be dangerous because too much of them can encourage people to relapse, but some levels of shame and guilt can motivate you to stay in recovery. Think about the consequences of your past gambling to avoid gambling in the future. Think about: The emotional pain you caused your loved ones The financial hardships you put your family in Any lies you told to disguise your addiction from others Try not to dwell on past behavior, and only use it for motivation to avoid gambling in the future. Too much shame or guilt can be counterproductive. 7. Seek Professional Help** If your gambling is severe, consider seeking professional help as soon as possible. Professional treatment from a mental health or addiction specialist could be the difference between a life of financial uncertainty versus living in financial stability. Professional treatment methods can teach you ways to stay away from gambling as well as refining the skills you are already employing. With professional counselors and therapists widely available, the only thing holding you back is your reluctance. Even better, you can seek professional help while participating in a support group. If your gambling addiction co-occurs alongside a substance use disorder, contact the experts at The Recovery Village. One telephone call can change your life for the better. Don’t hesitate, call today for a confidential, personal assessment with one of our representatives' Thanks so much! Ironically, I am a psychologist but i dont practise and I cant help mysef. My dear musicology, na person wey get money for pocket dey do betting . Why not get a metal piggy bank and be saving up all those money you are using for getting. Try and visualize the piggy bank as your Naija bet, do this for just six months and you will be surprised at how much you would have lost to betting 3 Likes |

- you need an accountability partner that will be checking on you. - Betting should be recreational but many people don't have the strength to handle it that way. The majority of people can't stop habits at once. I will advise you to stop gradually. Decide not to bet during the weekdays. Just weekend only. If you win, don't overplay. If you lose, don't "overchase". This will reduce your passion gradually. Also, take advantage of Int'l breaks cos you don't really have many games to choose from. Just don't play at all during Int'l breaks. - You can also try a personal punishment style. If you decide not to bet during a week and your craving push you to bet, the amount you stake should be removed from the amount you spend on yourself for something. Let me explain. If your craving push you to stake 500 Naira and your lunch cost is always 1k Naira. It means you have to punish yourself by reducing your lunch to 500 Naira for that day. Maybe you have to eat without meat that day. Be careful o, this must not be applied to family, it must only be applied to what affect you personally. I always use this style anytime I lose money due to stupidity. When I lost money a few years ago to a money doubling scheme program that many of my friends warned me not to try, I decided I buy a new cloth/shoe for two years. - Keep this at the back of your mind: Nobody can break the betting code. So far, it is a prediction of the future, nobody can erase the risk involved. The risk can just be lowered. Gambling is one of the oldest habits. The bookmakers don't lose. You can't send them packing. - Get busier. Don't hang around friends that bet. - You started betting because you need money, find alternative business opportunities that will occupy your mind. If you fancy online biz, try google Adsense, affiliate marketing or product selling on Instagram. To sell on IG without having any product, DM celebrities/individuals selling products you think it's marketable. Arrange percentage cut on any product you help them sell. Open IG, start adding people and market the products 5 Likes |

The number one Rule for Gambling is : NEVER bet with what you cannot afford to lose......you seem to forget this. Remember every Gambler knows, the secret to surviving is knowing what to throw in and knowing what to keep, perhaps as a salary earner and a family man you have missed this line. Do a self assessment of yourself and finances nd ask if you are gaining or losing from it. |

The day a mad man realises he was mad that is day he regains sanity. I played betting too, I have made 600k 160k, 75k 10k etc. Though I don't bet wit N100. I usually play smaller odds and put 10k 20k... I once invest 100k in a game. Let me shock you...I stopped. Why? I wasn't sleeping well, I wasn't thinking right and it was affecting my goals. I still check odds for fun and not because I want to play. Another thing you have to look out for is your association, check carefully if your friends are part of your influencers. 2 Likes |

post=100297430:Someone say he's addicted and you're asking him not to bet what he cannot afford to lose. Are you trying to help him fight addiction or encouraging him to continue? Will you also tell someone battling with masturbation addiction not to mastubate more than twice daily or a kleptomaniac not to steal more than once a day or even a sex addict not to have sex more than once a day. Bro, when people battle with addiction, the best advise you can give them is to ask to stop. If at the end you aimed the moon, you might be lucky to get the stars. 3 Likes |

I can't say I have stopped completely, but I can say I have control over it. I ask myself these questions anytime I feel like throwing away my hard earned money 1. Who is always the winner after you place a bet?..... the bookies 2.What happened to the last bet you staked(you already know the answer) 3. are you having the same urge to bet(throw money away)telling yourself you will win this time?.... if yes.... How did the last one go? 4. if I keep this money, what are the pressing little needs this money could cover? after answering all these.... you will convince yourself not to bet that day stay away from bet shop, don't fund ur online account. lastly, this isn't the period to bet.... most teams are now looking for their identity....unlike few years back when the madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea et al were consistent,to some extent many trial and error equals many casted tickets 2 Likes |
