You win elections in Nigeria by rigging not by the votes of the people. In 2015, Buhari succeeded in pulling the Northern bigwigs from PDP to join APC, and successfully rigged out Jonathan. Even people who remained in PDP because of convenience and inability to have control over the APC structure in their state worked in the background for Buhari from PDP. People like the then governor of Niger state.

Jonathan's attempt at rigging in the South could not counter the massive rigs in the North.
