I'm in my 30s. I see they just renamed in 2019 to GroBank from SA Bank of Athens. That one too I had never heard of before. Guys, this is a really small bank in SA terms but maybe farmers know about it.

Anyway you just might be right and Access Bank is never going to buy the big banks in SA, they just need a smaller bank they can easily acquire a majority of the shares to gain an entry into the SA market.

That's true. Nigerian companies have a tough time in SA so perhaps starting at the grassroots (excuse the pun) may be the winning formula.

I see Bank of Athens ranked 15th according to size back in 2018.

In the next 20 years, Access Bank will be a force to reckon with in Africa. The CEO is a visionary guy. The online banking will burst your brain when you discover that it is better and well equipped ith contents than some banks in the US. This is not an article, I am a living testimony.

15th out of (+-)20 in terms of size doesn't look good at first glance, but considering GroBank specialises in a niche market it could possibly be a leader in that sector, I don't have that info. But South Africans are very loyal to their bank so I don't see them migrating there in droves soon, in a market dominated by the so-called Big 4 Banks. Recent data shows it takes on average 3 decades for a South African to change banks.

As for why Nigerian companies fail in SA is due to a number of reasons if I recall well, mainly that of SA monopolies (think how MTN and DSTV operate in Nigeria for example), a Western model of doing business and issues around professionalism, and the lack of trust in Brand Nigeria among South Africans. What are your thoughts on this one?

If its not capitec..fnb..standardbank.absa.africanbank and this new online bank called discovery.then maybe na agro bank
