Mehn. Watching Ronaldinho was fun. Much fun than watching Messi, I would say.
This is just like saying water is wet cos everyone who watched those two play knows that.
But then, like it's been said earlier, stats have killed football. And football nowadays is drifting away from art (that it was before) to more of "mathematics" (if you'll permit me to use that), thereby taking away some of the entertainment factor we do cherish.
Everything now is calculated. Passes o, shot o, marking oo. The overemphasis of all these things makes football more boring cos players are not allowed room for innovation and creativity.

Money killed it plus there's a dearth in football talent-wise these days
I don't believe there's a dearth of talent-wise these days. I believe there's less demand for such talent these days.
Players who entertains are seen as "showboaters" and are not taken serious nowadays. Permit me to say caliber of ronaldinho or okocha might become bench players nowadays or they'll be warned seriously by coaches not to do such a thing in the pitch if they want to be seeing shirt regularly

True. Even the era of long range shots is all gone. When you watch clips of old matches, you see how shots are being pelted at the goal keeper from left right and centre. These days, everybody wants to walk the ball into the net.

True bro. Now, if you take long range shot anyhow, the kind bad eye your coach go look you eh grin.

So many things are diminishing in the game.

1. Hardly you see flair players
2.. Hardly you see entertainment players (like c.Ronaldo of man u and dinho of barca)
3... Hardly you see renowned long range shot takers unlike before were it is rampant
Everything is just so structured. Coaches structure your runs, movement, shots(I remember the time of van gaal at man u were he tells his players they must trap the ball before taking a shot embarassed), passes and so on.

No wonder big games aren't as intense as we have 10-15 years ago.
Now we'll see boring el clasico, boring man u vs Liverpool, boring arsenal vs Chelsea and so on.

I enjoy your Submissions, you've said it all. Football was an Art in the olden Days, but it has become a Science now. You and I know everything about Science demands seriousness and Calculations, that's where Stats come in.

Unlike Art where your individual Talent is valued, Science is about Results,. Football shouldn't have transformed to Science, a typical Example is Ronaldo at Man United and Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo at Man United was a Fun to watch. His play gonna make you smiles as Babies gifted Goodies, however his plays at Madrid was about scoring and assists (Stats). He lost his Art of the Game for Science.

I just wish football will go back to an art, but sadly we've already passed that phase

In my opinion, it is not be primarily attributed to the influence of money. Rather, I agree with @Oasis007 with regards to stats.

Today, we analyze and over analyze stats.. including irrelevant and ridiculous stats.. infact we now hear of stats that in previous past were never analyzed and these stats impact everything.
Because everybody don stake something inside..
Its now very result oriented due to money influx, so anybody that wants to come and dance on the pitch is seen as unserious.

@bold, it's the expected stats that I will never understand, what's xA, xG, xF

Its the fault of the fans. Many fans have an entitlement mentality and an insatiable appetite for trophies. They expect teams to win every game and once a team loses, the terms fraud, overhyped start being used to describe the team. If you like win 20 games, once you lose one, the guns come out blazing. So football has adjusted to allow less “playing” and more “working”. After all, football is nothing without the fans

For example, Ole wants his forward men to show flair and use their talent to create chances while keeping to a certain game plan and everyone calls him a tactical dunce for it. They prefer coaches like Pep who insist on their players following rigid attacking patterns. So why won’t football become boring when fans prefer the rigid attacking patterns just because it’s currently bringing more success?

I have never been a fan of stat to rate a player. I watch you play to know if you are good and effective as a player. It is on this board people compared Lingard to Hazard whereas mere watching them you will know the better footballer. Football is an art first. If Ronaldo Delima were to be in this generation he would not have being rated so highly or is it Maradona.

Messi at 19 - 25 was one of the best dribblers I have ever seen, he dribbled past defenders (not just one) at ease that you begin to question the quality of the defenders until you watch them against other top players and you notice it was Messi making them look average...

Even now, Messi is still very good at it but he has lost a yard or too...

But that hasn't stopped the entertainment factor of football before na. Also, I don't think arsenal fans would still be much if it's not because of the beautiful football displayed by early Wenger era. Even man u played good football under Sir Alex sef. I don't think it's the fans. I think it's money and media that caused everything.

Before someone like greenwood can be allowed to make mistakes and grow(check early c.Ronaldo years at man u), but now look at greenwood, reverse is the case. All because of what media will say.

And did you talk about Ole's Man u?
If present man u game is very beautiful, you think anybody will clamour for his sack?

Wahala about to start... cheesy

See no matter how genius a player is, when e don choke atimes, the brilliance of the manager comes in through tactics and setups.

Ultimately in football, the end product matters alot, so if Ole want, let the likes of Rashford and Bruno roam about and express themselves however they like, if the end product ain't trophies and good results, fans and media won't care much and will come for him.

Ofcourse tactics and setup is crucial, that is why I said; Ole wants the players to create chances with their skills and talent while keeping to the game plan. No matter how elaborate a coach’s game plan is, the team will fail if the players don’t have the skill or talent or mentality to actualize it.

For example, the team builds well only for the player who is supposed to give the final pass (that should result in a chance) to make a bad decision or overhit the pass or just shoot stupidly. Such things coaches cannot be blamed for.

The coach must have a game plan and the players must have the skill set and talent to execute the game plan. Coaches are not magicians you know, the players have a bigger role on the pitch than the coach does. This is why successful managers in present day football are always looking to improve the squad. There are always loopholes that need to be fixed in the team.

If you let players roam about without a gameplan, that is only a recipe for chaos. Structure is important, but it is the job of the players to create while keeping to a particular structure.

Fans and the media coming for a manager because of lack of trophies is the reason football has become so rigid. Managers are scared to lose. No more risk taking and it’s going to get worse. So you are just buttressing my point for me. Football has become a chore because of the fans.

Bro, football was way less compact those days. Football was free flowing. There were spaces to run into because both teams wanted to attack. Nowadays, it’s is not so

Also, I don't think arsenal fans would still be much if it's not because of the beautiful football displayed by early Wenger era. Even man u played good football under Sir Alex sef. I don't think it's the fans. I think it's money and media that caused everything.
Fans and the media coming for a manager because of lack of trophies is the reason football has become so rigid. Managers are scared to lose. No more risk taking and it’s going to get worse.

Football has become a chore because of the fans and the media. The fans follow the media, most so-called fans don’t even watch the games, they just read nonsense online and start forming retarded opinions. Go to Instagram, Twitter, Reddit and even here in nairaland and you’ll see what I am sayingtyping

Before someone like greenwood can be allowed to make mistakes and grow(check early c.Ronaldo years at man u), but now look at greenwood, reverse is the case. All because of what media will say.
The fans echo whatever agenda the media is pushing. Haven’t you seen some people here castigating Greenwood? Rival fans troll him because he wasn’t scoring as regularly as he was towards the end of last season? Go to IG and twitter and you’ll see idiots claiming Greenwood is a fraud and Greenwood is finished. Imagine claiming that a lad that has not even started his career is finished. Is that the media too? Fans are part of the problem bro.

And did you talk about Ole's Man u?
If present man u game is very beautiful, you think anybody will clamour for his sack?
Haha, bro you and I know that if United plays scintillating football throughout the season but end up with zero trophies, people will call for Ole to be sacked. Many people don’t care about the style of play, just win trophies, that’s all they care about. You can see this in the way people only complain about bus parking when it doesn’t bring success. As long as you are successful, people don’t care about your style of play. Mourinho is a good case study.
