Hello guys,

We are planning the casting of a slab that will serve as an outdoor rooftop terrace. this is not a roof slab but a fully exposed slab.

Pls what are the other options of treatment/chemical/admixtures that can be mixed with the concrete during casting to help the slab withstand all the harsh weather conditions it will be exposed to over a long period.

Note: Post-casting and during finishing, proper waterproofing will still be done and the surface tiled. Just thinking of a double/triple pronged mitigation plan.

Any recommendation/suggestion welcomed.

Thanks

This sound like a very good option.
sconp:

Admixture in the concrete + Bituminous felt + properly sloped slab with provision for drain + tiles properly installed with sealant should suffice.

You could also check the below link, they seem to have a variety of solutions.

I don't think this is as difficult to achieve as you guys are making it. I have achieved cement waterproofing and sealing in Nigeria easily. Normally you get from eBay or Amazon the attached admixtures for very little cost and add to your mix ratio according to the instruction of the product. For example one part admixture and three-part water like the attached photo.

I did waterproofing and sealing of (concrete countertop) not too long ago and got I think 20 litres sealant from Gbadexy. I mixed it one-part to three-part water into the cement-sand-aggregate mix. It worked. It was a 4" thick concrete countertop. It was waterproof and sealed effectively. After 9 days of curing, I applied three layers of coating of the sealant on the surface of the concrete and the whole thing was effectively waterproof, sealed and stain-resistant. It worked for me.

As this is just extra waterproof and sealing in conjuncture with the major waterproof design, I think this has a huge potential to work for you as well. You may want to have further discussion with Gbadexy to see if this will work for your circumstances.

You might be right, i´ve seen this option too before but talking about over 65sqm outdoor terrace don´t you think it need more than this admixtures?

Good morning boss. Asking this here so people can learn too.

Whats the average cost of cctv for a 3 bedroom apartment.. piping, wiring, camera, monitor, remote viewing, all inclusive.

Good afternoon Engr,

It depend first on location and also client desire... some might prefer just outdoor cam why some will love to have some indoor cam as well...:

Basically for analog 4 channels and 8 channels we should be looking at 180 to 280 respectively

For IP cameras the cost will be 250 to 400k respectively..

All still depend on type of cameras and all

If there's a substantial amount of difference from the QS figures and the actual project cost, then that will be attributable to some factors. If there are no additional works, variations or fluctuations, a QS projected cost should hold good, however, if there's a significant difference in these two figures (QS costing and actual construction cost), the following can be the causal factors;

1) Arithmetical error in the bill of quantities. This will definitely make the total estimated cost to be erroneous due to errors in arithmetic computation of figures.

2) Provisional sums provided in the bill of quantities are not adequate to cover the costs of works they're meant to execute.

3) Errors in some quantities in the bill. Wrong quantities as a result of erroneous calculations.

4) Nor included cost of preliminaries in the bill. Preliminaries items such as water, temporary store, scaffolding, water storage tank, security, temporary fence or hoarding etc should be included in bill of quantities whichever necessary.

5) Undefined scope of works especially when the QS doesn't have access to the architect, structural engineers of M&E engineers to get some clarifications on designs.

6) Competence of the QS. Most important factor.

7) Not engaging the QS during the construction phase. Some clients believe the QS job ends when the bill of quantities is produced. Not so at all. If an architect or structural engineers need to be on site to see to the execution of their designs, that means that the QS also need to be on site during construction to see to his cost being workable.

I believe that if these factors are under control that you're going to have a not only reliable estimate but also workable one.

jabolo:

After engaging a qualified 'Engineer' to carry out the works, the issue I have with paying for additional professional oversight (in Nigeria) is that the buck always seems to fall somewhere in the middle. It's not a question of 'being cheap', particularly if the benefits and safety nets operate as intended.

Do they have professional indemnity insurance that will compensate you gabadaya when things go wrong? No. They tend to pass the buck to the contractor (or Baba Lati) and engage you in an endless loop of recriminations.

As a tangential example, you engage a QS, who produces fancy costings and pretty spreadsheets - then you end up spending twice the amount (without significant variation in market conditions or work scope), you kinda lose heart.

So, I think professionals need to up their game, share project risks. Not just hope to collect fat fees and move on to the next client.

Good day.

"Honesty and competence are the most profitable long-term strategy."

My personal mantra as a Professional Quantity Surveyor.

Most of clients can literally take my professional advice to bank because it works every time and saves tons of money while achieving both quantity and quality in whatever project I got involved.

A good quality admixture is all that's needed. The principle works in waterproofing and sealing concrete. As your intended area is 65sqm,

#Get the mix-ratio right, in fact use a rich mix-ratio

#Use a 'romance machine' when pouring the concrete to poke out air bubbles.

#Use a minimum one part admixture and three parts water. I have seen one part admixture, ten part water.

#Wet 24hrs after pouring and wet twice a day for 9 days thereafter. The decking should be effectively sealed and waterproof.

I don’t want to do this BUT... getting a good slope is the best way to deal with water issues on a slab.

But what do I know? Don’t ever allow water to pond on your slab grin

To chip in sir, the admixtures decrease the water requirement of the materials to be cast and ensure very dense and impermeable concrete.
Some have some water repellent chemicals also incorporated.
With the proper waterproofing additives and proper mixing ratio and adequate after setting curing to further complete the hydration process for the ones that missed the water, the slab would be very water resistant like by able chairman has said.
Proper arrangement to ensure fast draining is also important. Even if there is a slight pore that may allow water penetrate, it would require pressure supplied by standing water on the surface.
Applying a polyurethane sealant would be an overkill giving extra protection. It's what is used in boat coating and sealing asphalt roads. It's durable and withstands the elements.

If nothing, think efflorescence and moisture problem which is the major issue with conduit work.

Motorize Bore hole diggers in the house... see jobs ooooo... give use price per meter of feets..

Geotech survey is very important too...

in Abuja... there are some Indian bore hole guys... they just ask you where you want the bore hole in your compound..
there price is fixed with casement... it ranges between 6k to 7k per meter.. they don't want to know if rock is inside or not.. they just dig...

Hoping to meet such guys in the south west

We have Indian rigs here in the sW. Most are adapted for basement(granitic) drillings and the works are completed within few hours.

The rotary rigs are specialised for sedimentary drillings, there timeline for a job is around 1-3days or more depending on the scope and formation. They usually charge on a lump sum... Around 500k to millions. Manual drilling which is cheaper can work in its place in most case.
