I hope this isn't some balance sheet padding to enable them evade tax. The MTN I know will want their workers to contribute their salaries

The problem is the slavery Manning system we practice in Nigeria. In South Africa MTN recruit directly but here in Nigeria most of their staff are contracted to Huawei and others which gives room for such contractors to treat people the way they feel like.

If you know the reasons behind the contracting thing ehn, you won't blame MTN but our Nigerian brothers.

Only the fittest of the fittest survives, so stay alive... cool

And mtn is the only company that laid off some workers? Allover the world many companies laid off workers due to the pandemic. Mtn even paid their workers off. U people should stop this stewpid mentality of 'they are milking nigerians' and accept the fact that mtn is a business organization just like every other businesses regardless of their country or origin. There are several foreign countries in nigeria and there are nigerian owned companies in other parts of the world too.

MTN increased salaries in a year that was marred by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nigeria’s largest mobile operator, MTN, increased the salaries of its staff in 2020 by about N4.5 billion according to findings by Nairametrics Research.
The telecom firm reported a total increase in its salaries and wages from about N25.79 billion in 2019 to about N30.2 billion in 2020, representing about 17% bump. On average, MTN paid N16.4 million per staff per annum in 2020 compared to N13.79 million per staff in 2019 representing an 18.9% increase. This is also because its headcount dropped by about 26 people.
A deep dive into its annual reports also reveals the salary increase was across the board for the year under review. Based on the increase, the least amount a staff earns is N3.5 million per annum from N2.5 million a year earlier.

Analysis of salary increases
• About 141 staff saw their salaries increase to above N3.5 million per annum in 2020.
• Another 260 staff were bumped to a salary scale of between above N7.5 and N8.5 million.
• Finally, another 158 employees were moved to a salary scale of above N12.5 million per annum, its highest pay bracket.
• In summary, a total of 599 employees received various levels of salary increases during the year.
Executive Directors of MTN also reported a pay raise from N586 million per annum in 2019 to N732 million in 2020. This is attributed to the appointment of Modupe Kadiri as Executive Director in March 2020.
Why this matters
The year 2020 was a peculiar year mostly due to the negative effects of Covid-19 which ravaged the finances of most corporations in Nigeria. At the height of the pandemic, some Nigerian companies resorted to downsizing and reduction of overheads as a strategy to maintain financial solvency. However, MTN’s salary increase is a huge departure from the norm.
• MTN reported a 15% increase in revenue (to N1.3 trillion) as Nigerians gobbled up data due to Covid-19 stay-at-home restrictions by the government and most private-sector corporations.
• MTN share price is down 6% year to date.

Are you a staff of Airtel, Glo, 9mobile? Please tell us what it feels like working there. is the pay worth it? when last was there a pay rise? is there room for career growth as seen with MTN?
Wonderful news let the government of Nigeria especially in the southeast, conduct a review of salaries, pensions etc so that the workforce will have purchasing power to obtain the rudiments of life like food, water, shelter etc

For over 6 months i have been thinking of how to start this 3 untapped business in Nigeria.. Before i decided to put it online to see if anyone will be willing to go into the business that doesn't require much funds and you will make huge profile from it buy spend little money on instagram advert , nairaland advert , google advert.

1. Online One Stop print Shop Like www.vistaprint.com in America..

I have been thinking on how to start this one stop printshop here in Nigeria.. This is a kind of store where you can order for all kind of printing business online.. I can create a website that has all the functionalities that vistaprint has.. but no support. This is a very huge business that doesnt require much funds..

What is need is just a hosting and a domain name.. script to build the store and some modules to add some functionalities to make the script work perfectly as a print shop..

2. Online robust shop where you can sell strictly native wears and materials ..
You need to check online.. There is no one stop shop online where you can get any kind of native materials that you want..
The largest fabrics stop in Lagos is brasas Fabrics which has a lot of fabrics in her store and i can authoritatively tell you that this store make nothing less than 20 Million Naira Daily.. Yes there are people who sell native materials on Konga and Jumia but thats just a section on their website.. What i am trying to come up with is a kind of robust website like konga and jumia but it will be strictly for native materials alone ..

3. Online Vehicle Spare Part Store Just like https://www.autozone.com in america

This is another great business idea which people has not really tapped into. One of the greatest nightmare of car owners is Mechanical Engineer and Rewire.. They are not honest in anyway.. because a car part may cost 3k and your mechanic will tell you that the part cost 10k - 11k ..
that is why i decided to create a website like autozone.com where i will upload all vehicle spare parts mostly tokunbo at Ladipo but this project alone will take more than 2 years to complete because what i am talking about here is not just for a particular car because a single ca alone has more than 30,000 spare parts. i am talking about a website where you can get all vehicle part from year 2000 till date.. Just name your car and you will find all the part here.. i can build a website that is 99% similar to autozone.com .. Now this is where the challenge is .. which i also have solution to.. The challenge of this project is Mechanics .. Even if you are selling the first grade spare part.. mechanics are ready to twist car owner brain that they dont trust the part you are bring.. that is why i think of starting a free car diagnostic where i will scan your vehicle for you for free sell the part for you at affordable price ( Original Part ) and still fix it for you will guarantee .. But even if after diagnosing you car for you and you still feel you dont want us to fix it for you.. You are free to go elsewhere .. Its not a must we fix it for you nor a must you purchase part from us .. but what we are coming up with is to make life easy for car owner so i have group of mechanics who are will to work with me on this project. if you want to do this project you are free..

Bro, there is nothing to talk about in the sacking of some staff. Mtn sacked only 26 people out of over 500 workers during pandemic and you want to talk about it? I think that is a very fair percentage to be honest.

Besides, they even increased their workers’ salary in the following year . How many people did Access bank sacked via that rude video and how many of their workers’ salary have they increased?

Some people just like to beef foreign companies for just no reason. Their mentality is like 'Na our country, u can't come to our country and make money'. Its very silly. Yet there are millions of Nigerians making money in other countries. They will beef MTN, beef DSTV. Ok let a Nigerian company come and do a better job na problem. MTN is a legitimate company doing legit business in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. In fact the only Nigerian telco company in Nigeria have the worst service. Now just imagine if that company is South African owned.
