The argument by many people here needs to be tested. There are currently many projects cited in the South like refineries, major gas fired power plants, petrochemical companies, seaports, massive LNG plants, numerous factories, major gas pipelines, depots, fertiliser companies, even several of Dangote's industries.

The North is largely underdeveloped in comparison with the South. To unleash our economic potential, the North has to be industrialised to an extent that it can wean itself off dependency on handouts. The country has gas in abundance, both from the rich Niger Delta or from newly discovered oil and gas fields in the North. Utilising gas for power is much cheaper and more sensible than solar or wind which are more expensive to generate and can't be anywhere near the same scale.

Rather than keep reading meanings to such moves, citizens should embrace it and ensure it benefits our people. The more regions of the country gets developed, the better for all. Attacks by militants on Southern infrastructure did not mean we shouldn't continue building them.

Finally, Mele Kyari the GMD NNPC is from Borno State so that would have weighed heavily towards citing the gas plant in Maiduguri. Afterall, this is Nigeria where some of the decisions get driven by such considerations.

In that case, you had better make use of the gas found in the north, dont bother to tap from our lines,

It does not make any economic sense channeling pipelines from the delta to far north ,

We have gas in abundant here in the delta that could last the next one million years , yet the federal govt stopped niger delta states from utilizing the gas for power generation to serving the delta states ,

Rather they want to use it to generate power for bornu state who inflicted self destruction on themselves because bokoharam fight is baseless, while this was the same reason they gave them north east development commission which makes use of oil proceed to develop the north east under the guise of bokoharam destruction,

It is finish for this country

How is it that a government which can't even get existing refineries working after at least 3 rounds of "turn around maintenance", should now be planning to build a gas-plant in Maiduguri, of all places? If they've proven incompetent in managing existing infrastructure in places like Port Harcourt and Kaduna, why would anybody in this government expect to do better in a region plagued by insurgency? And what is the point of placing the gas-plant up north when the primary gas source and the primary market for its consumption will be in the south?

None of this makes even the slightest bit of economic sense whatsoever: it won't bring much employment (if any) to the northern masses, as most of them are woefully unqualified for the sorts of engineering, financial and managerial jobs such a project would create. In any case, it won't be long into the beginning of any construction before Boko Haram strikes, which is guaranteed, given how much easier a target it would be than the farmers they currently terrorise: unlike subsistence farmers, big gas-plants can't hide or run away on news of impending attacks.

The only possible rationale I can see for this plan is to provide yet another avenue for self-enrichment by a few politicians, which they are attempting to camouflage by pandering to the masses of uneducated northern "talakawas" who won't realize it's all a big con at their expense.

Why are they constructing a gas plant in a far north state that does not have oil and at the end of the day, they will spend billions every year transporting the gas from south to maiduguri, why do they want to put such invest in the most unsafe state in Nigeria?

We are suffering whereas our land is blessed, we are denied federal jobs in nnpc ,nlng ,dpr etc , yet our southern leaders are okay with the trend

similar to how they built the kaduna refinery, white elephant projects with no real economic value or advantage.

power projects all across the world as a matter of necessity are situated close to their primary source of energy. i guess that skipped over the heads of these fools that the gas is in the southern part of nigeria but for these fools i guess it is more convenient to pipe gas down to the north rather than use high voltage transmission lines to transmit the electricity generated all over the country. i am not saying borno does not deserve its own power plant, if they have gas or coal or hydro or are close to these sources of power, then by all means let them have it (insurgency aside) but as of today, gas in commercial quantities is located in the deep south. all thermal power plants ought to be located in the southern part of the country closer to where the gas is extracted.

another million dollar project for no reason whatsoever. no one is saying anything about the exisiting power plants we have. no one is saying anything about our dilapidated transmission and distribution system (yes distribution has been privatised but tranmission is still in government hands and our national grid is a fcu_king joke). is it the electricity they want or to make a political statement from the commissioning and building of a gas power plant in the middle of nowhere.

this is what tribal politics looks like. sweep all logic under the rug and just go with what is best for my tribe. and we wonder why Nigeria is a monumentally failed state, a proverbial gift of failure that keeps giving.

I was watching channels TV this morning and in one their news headlines I read that NNpC want to search for oil and explore oil in sokoto. And this project will cost billion of dollars.

Just imagine, Wasting our national resources and money for a white elephant projects.

Nnpc is using those white elephant projects to cash out. Very Corrupt Federal Company!

Wow this is really a good move. The state from January 23rd has been in darkness, as a result of the consistent attacks on the national electric grid infrastructure by the Bokoharam guys.

It will really give the state a reprieve. This project is so on point. Good one by Mele Kyari, may this not end up on prototype stage.

The people I keep blaming are our so called southern leaders and elders who have no single sense! Nigeria is long gone! Nigeria died in 2015. They know this but their selfish greed to eat crumbs from the floor given to them by their Fulani masters won’t allow them get up from the floor and say No! Enough is enough! We want out!. Some countries in Europe is the size of Delta State! Yet they are independent and financially stable!

The North has unquantifiable energy resource in the "Sun".
Govt should focus on how to harness this energy resource in driving solar energy development to benefit the North.
Why waste money constructing such project in a place far away from gas reserves?

Oga , stop being clever by half.

Most of these investment were done by private sectors. How can you build as gas power station in a terrorists ravaged state like borno ? Have they solve the problem of Boko Haram there.

What is the borno state contributing to the treasury of Nigeria ? This project is waste of money and resources because Boko Haram boys will target it and bomb it.

The 3 refineries, Eleme Petrochemicals, Notore (both first built by Govt before they were privatized), every single infrastructure by IOCs have more than 50% govt investment in them, most gas fired plants, thousands of kilometres of pipelines, seaports, NLNG (49% govt) and plenty others are/ were govt funded.

Did militants not bomb plenty infrastructure in the South? If you leave it to private hands, they will not invest massively in the North because the market is not yet developed. Govt's role is to open up areas and develop the markets. We complain about how poor the North is. With that sort of population, future opportunities abound. You have to step back sometimes to see it

Somebody explored for oil and gas in the South before it became available. Pipelines are built from gas producing areas to serve communities and even countries far away. Examples abound all over the world. Oil and gas will soon become less desirable just like coal so the more you can use to industrialize the whole country and not only 'our' state(s) will do everyone a world of good. The question to ask is if those consuming that power in Borno and other states will pay for it. This mentality of it is ours is what keeps us backward. Many of the communities in the SS will want power to be given freely by govt and oil companies. That mentality won't get us far.

While some Southern States are complaining, Edo state went into a partnership with a power producing company to utilize its gas for power production which is supplied to the state. That is a Gov thinking like a businessman rather than sitting and complaining about how FG is stopping it from utilising its gas to generate power.

Govt, either through NNPC or NCDMB have stakes in many of the modular refineries now coming on stream in the South. NLNG Train7 is a $10bln investment in Bonny. There is a massive pipeline connecting East to West which is nearing completion(the precursor of AKK). Even if many disagree (including me), govt will spend $1.5bln to rehabilitate PortHarcourt refinery. There are a lot more like that being financed by NNPC.

the gas plant is for electrification of Niger republic and northern nigeria. there is about to be (at least for now) a somewhat merger of the two countries. it will be a creation of the biggest country(although both countries still have to keep thier names)

It’s like during the 1970s when northern Nigeria soldiers built huge oil pipelines from the Niger Delta region to Kaduna solely to build Kaduna refinery.

Kaduna refinery is a liability to the federal government most of the time.

It's more than a waste. It puts the life of communities around the gas plant in danger. Bomb explosion in such gas plant will kill thousands of lives and destroy the communities around it. Nigerians are just too quiet to a fault. We should say no to this project. It is meaningless. They should take the project closer to where we have the gas wells and save cost. It should be built where we have relative peace and not in a troubled zone.
