It has indeed become fashionable for some Nigerians, especially those from the core North to threaten Igbos with war anytime their is serious agitation for break-up. You will hear them saying things like "they should ask their fathers what happened in 1967-70" "another 3 million will be sacrificed" "your cities will be turned to dust" "you all will be starved to death" and bla bla bla it goes.

My question to these scaremongers is this, have you for once checked combatant casualties between Nigeria and Biafra during the civil war? I mean people that died at the war fronts during battle? Facts on ground proved that far more Nigerian soldiers were killed more than Biafran soldiers! This was despite the superior firepower at the disposal of the Nigerian army, with massive support from Britain, Russia and the Arab world!!

Each time the Nigerian army suffered heavy losses in the hands of Biafrans, they will turn around and visit their frustrations on the Igbo civilian population either through air raids or massacres. A good example of this was when Murtala Muhammed twice suffered heavy defeat when he tried to cross the Niger River into Onitsha. He turned around and massacred Asaba people! They also told their Egyptian and Syrian pilots who controlled their airfleet to straff civilian areas like markets, hospitals, churches, and schools. Worst of all, they also bombed aircrafts bringing relief materials like food, drugs and cloths to starving populations, especially the mass of refugees who were in desperate need of them. This was how the so-called 3 million were killed.

Now, back to present realities. Nigeria is no longer under regional governments where each region was semi autonomous but on the contrary, we now have 36 states. So, in essence, no one should expect another 1967-70 Biafra vs Nigeria type of warfare again. It can't happen, rather what could possibly happen is guerilla warfare. Hit and run type of battles that mostly occurs in the jungles. This is where things become tricky for Nigeria. We have proven over time to be incompetent in such battles. Examples abound eg. Biafra war, Boko Haram, militants and ESN.

It is in the best interest of Nigerian government to deescalate things and avoid a full blown guerilla warfare with ESN because if it gets to that, then it can only end with a referendum that will result in balkanization.

So stop threatening Igbos with war each time they voice their intentions to leave Nigeria because you guys will be the ultimate loser.

The easiest and most sustainable way of ensuring the continued existence of Nigeria is through entrenchment of justice and equity, and not by threats.

It is quite shocking that the same parasitic people that want Nigeria to remain at all costs are still the ones breaking it with their actions.

It has become obvious that they want Nigeria to remain but only on their own terms. They expect others to accept all manner of indignities and oppression or perish. But that mindset will be their worst undoing. Nigeria is like a group of countries answering one name. Now, if the indigenous people didn't tolerate the colonialists, who were educated, militarily advanced, smart and progressive, it is a barbaric, uncivilized, uneducated, unprogressive and oppressive savages that they will tolerate?

What the Nigerian government relied on to "win" the war was the blockade and aerial bombardment of civilian population. Take this two out of the equation and you will see that the war would have continued for ages with no side winning despite the massive support Nigeria enjoyed and availability of massive arsenals.

Now, if IPOB/ESN is pushed into war, it can only be a guerilla war, thus aerial bombardment of cities, schools, markets etc won't happen and blockade will also not be possible. Then how would Nigeria expect to win?

The war may drag for 1, 2, 3 or even 5 years but ultimately, it will end in a referendum which everyone knows Igbos will overwhelmingly vote to go their way.

Lolz, this "victim mentality" term you guys always mention has become a mantra you always parrot whenever you're faced with facts you can't defend. What has "victim mentality" got to do with the discussion here?

Again, just look at how you murdered history in your futile attempts to rewrite it. A simple Google search will give you diverse accounts of how Murtala Muhammed was consecutively trashed by the Biafrans and he had to be recalled at some point. What happened at Abagana sector was an ambush by the Biafrans that wiped out a battalion of the Nigerian army!

You guys should stop being ridiculous by uttering lies anyone can easily detect.

Derailing....makes no sense at all.

If you or Tompolo are brave, go to any oil pipeline now, and try to sabotage the country, and let's see if you will live to tell the tale.

Do not cause any distraction with your unfounded letter claims.

Lol.Major Madiebo in his published memoir said that those killed at Abagana were service troops.and that federal combat troops fought their way through. It is not possible to kill trained combat troops on that scale unless you are using one ton bombs or weapons of mass destruction.Murtalla did make mistakes, Nigerians and biafrans are walking monuments of mistakes anyway, the genes are full of mistakes.

Oguta The Biafran City That…

November 23 2020 | Radio Biafra

There are arguably a few battles during the Biafran war more important than the ones at Oguta – but only a few.

Oguta, is a small lakeside town in south-east Nigeria, and harboured thousands of refugees due to its proximity to the Oguta lake and seafood with its vital protein and nutritional value.

Furthermore, it was a mere 16 kilometres away to Uli airport, Biafra’s last airstrip and only remaining link to the outside world that served as Biafra’s major supply line for arms and relief material, which made recapturing it an existential necessity for the Nigerian Army was well as keeping it liberated by Biafra.

Colonel Emmanuel Nwobosi, chief of staff to Biafran Leader General Chukwuemeka Ojukwu summates it perfectly when he recently said: “If Nigeria got a foothold in Oguta, the airport at Uli, which was our major link to the outside world, would have been in jeopardy. They would have also sent reinforcement by the seaway into Biafra.”

The three clashes between the Nigerian Army and the Biafran in the city were of epic proportion and showed the full fury of then, Africa’s most vicious civil war.

Ever since the early stages of the Nigerian Civil War, both sides had been fighting for control of the Imo State and to the Nigerian Army Oguta was critical as it was a gateway from the water. Especially so as many roads into Biafra from Nigerian-controlled cities were purposely destroyed by Biafran Army Engineers to delay attacks by the Nigerian army.

The Nigerian Air force pounded Oguta from the air forcing the citizens to hide in the bush during the day and brave returning at night but still they could not dislodge neither them. or their army. Then they tried something else. They invaded Oguta by land and sea and tried to swing down and take the airport by land. Their attack was meticulously planned and enough forces assembled. The Federal troops were so confident of their victory that they brought their wives, girlfriends and hundreds of cows en tow.

The Oguta Tiger allegedly manned by Ojukwu himself during Oguta I was a modified Panard is now at the War Museum in Umuahia.

In the subsequent two confrontations that formed that entire battle which lasted for three days, in which Ojukwu led the Biafran forces himself for the first and only time, the Biafrans fought their socks off and the Federals would be routed both on land and sea.

The battle ranks as one of their worst defeats of the war and again Uli would remain the elusive dangling carrot with the Nigerian Marines landing as close as 20 kilometres to it at Oguta II, only to be beaten back leaving countless dead including European advisors dead and bloated in the water for the fish to grow fat on.

Here the Oguta lake goddess Uhammiri aka Ogbuide and her female religious cult are credited with capsizing many of the enemies’ gunboats and making them a spoil of war for the natives Authors Okwuosa L, Okoli A, and Uroko F examine this breathtakingly in their September 2018 publication Mammy Water and Her Oguta Female Religious Cult During the Nigeria-Biafra War.

In mid-1969 Nigerian Head of State Yakubu Gowon ordered a final attack on Oguta and Owerri. Murtala Muhammad and Mohammed Shuwa made their ways towards Oguta. Biafran President Odumegwu Ojukwu countered and ordered Col. Omorowa, Adgara Ike, and Joseph Achuzie to defend the city. Before the arrival of the Nigerians Joseph Hannibal was able to destroy the Port Harcourt – Owerri road and the Owerri – Onitsha road.

They did precisely that..

In late May 1969 Mohammed Shuwa arrived with a large force of men in downtown Oguta. A large gun battle ensued and again the battle ended with the retreat of Shuwa’s men and over 500 dead on both sides.

Then Olusegun Obasanjo arrived with Murtala Muhammad in July 1969 with over 30 tanks and over 10,000 men. Obasanjo’s men surrounded the city and began shelling the city. Over 30% of the city’s population fled with over 2,200 civilians killed or wounded in the crossfire.

Nevertheless, the Biafrans managed to keep Oguta under their control for another 3 months but lost it when Olusegun Obasanjo invaded the city with full force on October 9, 1969.

Even though Oguta was eventually captured by the Nigerians they were still unable to capture either Uli or Owerri until Biafra surrendered to the Nigerians on January 15, 1970.

Perhaps u read the book upside down..

General Alexander Madiebbo in his book The Nigerian Revolution and Biafra war, described how a 99 lorry convoy bearing thousands of battle readty troops, military stores, fuels , arms and ammunition was totally destroyed by major uchendu and his company of biafran troops, using a barrage of ogbunigwe flying mines.

The only survivors were about 2 or 3 ferrets and saladines that were in front of the convoy and whom uchendu didt bother wasting time to engage. The armored cars seeing the fate befalling the 99 lorries they were supposedly leading to war ,instead of turning around to engage the attackers actually increased pace in a bid to get themselves as far away as possible from the attack..

The few escapee vehicles however ran into the waiting hands of another ambush party a few kilometres from abagana

I don't understand. Is staying in Nigeria by force? Isn't it an antithesis to the spirit of democracy that a nation (in this case, the Igbos) have an inalienable right to self-determination and self-rule? If Nigeria hates the Igbos so much, why not just fcking let them go?

The Igbos dilemma in Nigeria reminds me of when the Israelites were under captivity in Egypt , when pharaoh refused to let them go until he was ultimately destroyed, and that exactly will be the fate of Nigeria if it refuses to restructure, becomes accountable, equitable, with rule of law as an instrument for all the nations in it.

All the insecure zombies with low key hates for the Igbos masking under "one Nigeria", I ask you, how can there be peace and a feeling of "oneness" without justice? Nigeria is dying, but still, doing what is right to salvage what is left seems impossible to the northern ruling class. It is only a matter of time, the zoo will fall, and then, everyone will know clearly who will survive as a separate nation. What a country.
