This looks interesting. Please could you shed more light on the purpose of this pre-slab work?

Oh that was nothing really... my build, my way. But is just the standard practice globally to test the strength of concrete.

Don’t take me too serious though!

Real Life Scenarios

In 2011, a young guy engaged a team of experienced concreters to pour his DPC. When they were done with the pour, the abokis (labourers) who worked on the project hail him shouting “Oga, 7 stories dey go!!! Cement dey dia grin

In similar situation, a young professional engineer engaged a laboratory on contract for testing the concrete on a major development for educational purposes.

As with all construction materials, the quality of concrete can vary depending on the mixing and placing processes (the formwork, compaction, quality of water and even the curing process) and the standard of site supervision and controls.

The concrete team in the first scenarios is made up of highly experienced concreters who knew exactly what to do when it comes to concreting.

However, the complexity of the project and its intended use led the young pro in scenario 2 to engage a quality control lab to carry out series of test to determine if the strength of the concrete poured satisfy structural design requirement.

The intended use of my ongoing build requires we follow the standard practice of testing the strength of concrete to determine if it satisfy the structural design requirement.

Nothing more. The final choice rest with the client.

KEY POINTS BETWEEN RELAY & SERVO STABILIZER

AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators) or Voltage stabilizers have become something of great importance to every family and business alike to help protect electrical equipment from irregular current coming in from the national power grid. These AVRs helps to regulate the voltage supplied from the national grid such that it will deliver the required amount of voltage required for the family or business equipment if the incoming voltage is within what the AVR can regulate.

The production of this Stabilizers started with the use of an electromagnetic relay system that helps in selecting the right part to adjust the incoming voltage. This method came with its own strength and weakness. Later, another method was designed with the use of electronic circuit for the adjustment purpose. This method also comes with its own strength and weakness.

The initial technology that is also used for the production of Stabilizer is called the relay technology while the other technology is called the servo.

Relay Voltage Stabilizers / AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators):
With the relay technology in stabilizer, the electronic circuit inside the stabilizer compares the output voltage with a reference value that has been provided and built-in to reference voltage source.

Anytime the incoming voltage goes higher or lower than normal, the control circuit switches in the Stabilizer switches to the corresponding relay to connect a desired tapping for the output voltage. The relay technology comes with a ±10 % output voltage accuracy.

This type of stabilizer is mostly used for low rating appliances in homes, offices and industries as they are of low weight and low cost.

However, this technology comes with certain limitations which includes low voltage correction speed, less durable, less reliable, among other issues in the stabilizer technology.

At the same time, researcher has developed a later technology for the stabilizer and this is called the servo controlled system. This technology attempts to resolve the accuracy of output and the delay time in the relay technology of stabilizers.

Servo Voltage Stabilizers:
The Servo voltage stabilizer consists of the servo motor, Buck Boost transformer (BBT) and Autotransformer among other elements. The voltage that comes out of the servo stabilizer is voltage across the Buck Boost transformer (BBT). One end of the primary BBT is connected to fixed tap of autotransformer and the other end is connected to the shaft of the servo motor.

Whenever the incoming voltage is too high or very low within the input range, the servo motor in this servo type of stabilizer moves across the autotransformer in such a way that the voltage induced across the secondary BBT is equals to set output voltage.

This type of stabilizer is called a servo stabilizer because it uses a servo motor to enable the voltage correction.

Servo voltage stabilizers have a rugged construction and can sustain high fluctuation and it is more durable. It is mainly used for high output voltage accuracy, usually ±1 % with input voltage changes up to ± 50 %.

If we compare servo stabilizers with relay type stabilizers we can find various advantages of servo voltage stabilizer such as higher correction speed, high precision of stabilized output, capable of withstanding inrush currents and most importantly the high reliability.

SERVO STABILIZER ! :

-Servo motor is used for controlling unit of voltage level.

-Level of protection is high.

-Servo motor has good step size resolution for correction of voltage.

-It will give balanced output which may be ±1% error.

-It is available for higher rating more than 1 KVA.

-This stabilizer can be used in the industries as well as at homes.

-Cost of servo motor is more than relay.

-This stabilizer is used in the communication line.

RELAY STABILIZER !

-Relay is used for controlling the voltage level.

-Relay has lower size of resolution.

-It will not give stabilized output with accuracy.

-It is for low rating.

-This stabilizer can be used at homes.

-Cost of relay is lesser than servo motor.

-Level of protection is low as compared to servo type.

-This Stabilizer is basically used in home or for small scale purpose.

Only when you are using PVC ceiling or the old boards sold in the market. This is because they need the plaster as support under it. When you are doing POP ceiling, you better plaster before the ceiling.

Good morning.

Irrespective of the years of experience of the concreters, it is standard procedure to carry out concrete cube tests.

at the second bolded, Are you referring to trial mixes?

No, I’m not implying trial mixes. I take samples at random intervals during the pour.

If it is Top Bond gum, it means he has to concrete the floor prior abi Top Bond dey work for ordinary sand, sand ground?

If he has to concrete the floor to get the gum to work, what's the point and cost savings of artificial carpet grass? Or is it just for aesthetic?

I say this because I think he asked before if he could place the artificial grass on ordinary ground and the response was yes. Or did I miss it?
No, he asked if he could use Gum or Nail for installation.

He didn't specify the kind of floor tho.

Plastering for me.

On plastering does the "fate" of the building looks lie. Mistakes could be made on the wall or concrete casts and corrected by filling or scrapping/chizeling, mistakes could be made on the piping and corrected, but a mistake made with plastering is not easy to correct, it might stay there forever.

The worst thing is that a good screeding work cannot hide a crooked plastering work, an expensive painting cannot correct a bent wall edge or shoddy plastering work. It's even worse when you have an eye for details, you will be seeing the bent and crooked lines daily!
That could be very stressful cheesy

Baba you have said a lot ooo

I consider my plaster job well done and I feel the screed could come out nice.

Thanks for the advice I appreciate

diordaves:

From a UK perspective, this is easy to answer: kitchen and toilets sell houses. A luxurious house is one with a fantastic top of the range kitchen with a well presented toilet.

A top of the range kitchen will be spacious (6x6m), with American double door fridge, a cooker range with six burners and oven, marble or granite or polished concrete countertop, microwave with wall and floor glossy cabinet units as a minimum.

In Nigeria we don't showcase our kitchen as such, so your living room should be top notch. POP is spot on. I'm not sure of the quality of your plaster work so screening your living room walls and carefully selected good quality floor tiles will nail it.

I know you said ONE thing, but don't forget your kerb appeal. This is very important. Your gate design, railing design, pillars, coping and interlocking will help tie the house together.
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by ceelog(m): 3:59pm On Apr 17, 2021
Thanks Sir

But I didn't say I will go for low quality in other areas (I could settle for above average finish...I am not mega rich).
I did a mix of high quality Nigerian tiles and some granites in some areas. Not luxurious but very good quality.
I only said I wanted one area I will go luxurious that would give the house that one huge appeal to those who enter it.

n3xt:

I once shared this before:

To your question, I can only tell you what I’d do.

"Guy, if there was ONE stage of this your build you were asked to put it a whole lot of your savings to make it the best and this build LUXURIOUS...what will it be?"

I’d focus on the form. I’ll ensure the framework is compact, with a good form factor.

- compact design
- great facade
- large windows

Building anything great and economical requires a lot of planning (on paper).

So the carcass stage is it for me. On finishes, I’d save on where I can by looking for value engineering but never to skimp on actual quality.
