Bro, what did you graduate with please? I just got a response from the graduate office of Stevens, I sent them a mail inquiring about graduate assistantships and funding, and they said that I didn’t get funding because I didn’t finish with first class. Lol

I finished with a second class upper (Hons)

So I wanna know if anyone here finished with first class and still didn’t get funding from Stevens.

If there is someone like that, that means the school is just looking for money grin
i got about $8,000 funding from Stevens

Wow, what an expose, I got admitted to a masters program with a $20,000 scholarship. Now negotiating assistantship with them, cos I got an assistantship elsewhere, but I didn't graduate with a first-class. Hopefully, they will consider me. Can anyone advise, please?
Is your GRE score very high? I learnt they give funding on that basis too

By the way, the school that gave you $20,000 scholarship, is it Stevens ?

Did you finish with first class ?

And how did you apply for the funding? Is it through your department or through the graduate office

Or did the funding come together with your acceptance letter without you applying

Thank you.

Pepperoni001:
Since you have every documents available, just wait till its 60 days to your first day of class so you can then request for Emergency date.

Be rest assured that dates will still open up.

Wishing you the best.

Graduate Assistantships and funding are not a birthright. They are highly competitive... and contrary to public opinion here, Nigerians aren't the only applicants looking for funding. You have a ton of folks from Asia, most of whom have superior qualifications to yours. Many of them likely aced the GRE and/or are coming from highly competitive undergraduate programs. Even if you finished with a first-class, funding isn't guaranteed. If more people had "first-class" degrees than available funding, too bad. Your second-class upper only means something in Nigeria... not much here (I learned that lesson very quickly).

I finished my undergraduate with 4.44/5 and my masters degree with 3.03/4. I applied for a master program again so I don't know what they are looking for that made me not to get assistantship. Na them sabi....

I think you didn't do your homework well enough. You should know that funding at the masters level is very limited. If you notice, most of the people here with full funding are almost always Ph.D. candidates. That is where the funding is. Here is a simple alternative - you can apply for a Ph.D. program, obtain full funding and choose to leave after your qualifying exam in 2 years. It still counts as a valid thesis masters degree... you will have to understand how your program works but worth a try.

Please tell them oh. Funding is is not common for Masters level. It is only just in the past few years that I started hearing about Masters students getting funding. Previously, as in more than a decade ago, it was a rarity to find Masters students with funding. Funding is usually reserved for PhD students.

Same here. I think what I find most fascinating is the overwhelming sense of entitlement. It's as if Nigerians think others exist solely to serve them.

I heard about Kennesaw state university from Brown2green. May God bless him.

I'm grateful to God Almighty that made today possible. Everything started in 2019.
I wrote GRE and applied to schools but they all rejected me then I ran to Nairaland to tender my case.

One angel saw my case on Nairaland and sent a mail to me. We call him Pepe . I thank God for using Pepe for me. He told me to go and do WES so that I can get admission and funding. I told him it wasn't possible becos I didn't have that kind of money. He pressed on me until I did WES, then my story changed.

I am so happy right now. Only God could have done this.

I planned to have my interview at a later date but I just discovered that my passport will remain exactly 6 months tomorrow. God gave me today's date in short

Interview
Vo: good morning
Me: good morning sir.
Vo: do you have up to six months on this passport.
Me: yes sir. It will remain six months tomorrow.
Vo: where are you going in the US?
Me: I'm going to kennesaw state university for my Master's degree in chemistry. I got this offer in 2020 but due to covid lockdown I couldn't secure an appointment.
Vo: oh, I see.
Me: yes sir. In fact my assistantship was kept for me.
Vo: nodding in agreement.
Vo : why do you want to have this degree?
Me: I planned to join a multinational company here in Nigeria as a research and development Chemist, and this degree will put me in the best position to achieve that.
I'm currently eyeing Nestlé, OLAM, and Unilever.
Vo: where are you working presently?
Me: I'm working with Nestlé Nigeria on contract. I joined them pending the beginning of my program as I can't take up any permanent appointment until I get my Master's.
Vo: nodding in agreement.
Vo: have you travelled out before?
Me: No sir.
Vo: who is your sponsor?
Me : named him.
Vo: what does he do?
Me: he holds the position of vice president at OLAM international. So he controls all their manufacturing activities in Nigeria.
Vo: didn't get OLAM so I spelt for him.
Vo: why does he want to sponsor you?
Me: he was the one that advised me to go for my Master's abroad to gain a better research knowledge and international exposure before I join their company as R&grin Chemist. He promised to render all the necessary support and he's doing just that. In fact he gave me the money last year before I realized I couldn't go.
Vo: the money is in your account?
Me: No sir. In his account.
Vo: do you have his statement?
Me: yes I do. Gave him.
While he collected it to check, I quickly added.. that's just his transactional account, not his salary account.
Me: the assistantship I have has covered full tuition and living expenses, he's just covering the miscellaneous expenses.
Vo: checked the i20 again, then drop the account statement and then he said something I didn't hear and gave me the white paper.
Me: still standing at his front like I was in another world.
Vo: you are free to go.

Hallelujah!
The security there said it was the longest interview.

I appreciate everyone on this thread. Thanks so much!

Spence, thanks so much for words of wisdom.

Pepe my brother, I love you so much.

Glory be to God!

Congrats Acers

Good evening all,

I have a little problem and I've spent days reading the previous thread but nothing close.
Here is my problem

So, a bank has decided to loan us the money so my i20 would be sent, but we have two options.

They insist on opening a new account which we have, but if we take the account to the embassy, it will be less than 2 months and I heard 6 months statement is needed

Also, mum has a current account with the said however, she hasn't used it in a year and hence statements for the last 6 months might not be weighty enough if we decide to put the money in the account.

We have two options now,
Use the new account, get the statement for it and generate a reference letter directed to the embassy with the old(current) account.
My argument here would be that this new account was opened and funded solely for this purpose( travel)

Or,
Use the old account that we haven't really used in a year and still get a reference for it from the bank.

We can only use accounts an account from that particular bank.
Now what do you all advice and do I have a case?
