I'm sorry but your mum is intellectually retarded with a backward, archaic and myopic mindset.

She needs mental emancipation. I won't mince words, your mother is a destiny killer.

Are you okay?

Medical practice is not about money but the joy of helping and saving lives.
I have taken delivery of more 500 babies and the joy of seeing new born cannot be explained.
It is also the job where I certify people dead, see their last moments in life.It is humbling. No other job is like that...
Wives and husbands commit secrets they cannot tell their spouse or even a religious leader to you.

With regards to money, doctors in Canada, US,Australia and many European countries are rich.Even South Africa appreciate them.

Ultimately, the guy should not be forced.
I studied civil engineering for 2 years and wrote Jamb again to study medicine because my parents suggested.I have no regrets.

Doctors are well respected everywhere.I work in Europe and initially whe a black guy meets a white man acting funny, when they realise you're a doctor....everything changes.

Only doctors respectfully have access to everyone's privacy as part of their job.

Good..parents have seen the future and have walked a lane that the experienced wasnt the best ..Trust their guidance if they want you to study medicine

Medicine is a fine profession but not in Nigeria anymore. Nigerian government have rendered every course useless. Nigerians doctor are under paid, No good working condition for our doctors, all our government hospitals look like mortuary with ill equipped medical instruments and facilities. Incessant nation wide medical strikes
Nigeria is just a useless country nothing seems to work perfectly.
Many people you see today that are doing fine or not fine in any Field also have different kinds of degrees but the social economy frustration of Nigeria have left so many to look for other means of survival.
The era of having paper certificate is gone now we are in the era of what you can do with your brain and hand
forget all these stories ..alot of people made it in medicine with all those conditions..
the guy should be encouraged to do it

My younger brother is about to register for JAMB for the second time and my mum insists he must study medicine. What's so special about medicine?

She feels that doctors are rich. I've been trying to convince her. What do I do to help my bro because he doesn't want to study medicine?

Atleast he has someone that will sponsor him... unlike me here

I have always wanted to do something with Animals. I want to do it for life. I remember saying I want to be a Veterinarian. They always laughed saying I would be a Dog doctor.
So when my father passed I was told about Medical Laboratory Science. I initially applied it in Jamb but there was that pressure on me that you can study medicine and save people from dying and I would be respected in the Society and I would get a good job and travel abroad if I may. But the truth is that it wasn't there. The love and that zeal to see Animals whenever I wake up in the morning was still there. I switched to Medicine then back to Veterinary Medicine. My people are saying"Aaah there's no job oo, you want to be a Doctor fowl? Animal Doctor, Doctor dog?"gringrin. I said lie lie I am not turning back this time. I live in a community and I see Animals. My thought has always been why are Animals these different, can their superability be used for Man's good? I saw a chicken break a bone within five days it was working well. I was surprised.
They told me that why didn't I just apply for medicine since it is 6years. I just didn't care about their feelings. I read about the course in-depth analysis and I saw it is far different from what I even envisaged it to be.
They've already told me if I don't get work after graduation,I should not come crying.
Things would be hard. Every Profession have it tough. Never do what you don't like. Fine money might be there, but at the end you lose the interest and it becomes monotonous.
Admission knocks on my door. My friends dey always laugh me but I no send. E hard we go push through. Family no send me na only Mama tranda gidigba for my back.
OP tell your brother to do what he likes finish. I am about to start my long road to success. Fire dey come I know but guy must wriggle am.
vet is fucking hard una dey try bro ..I salute you tbh

Tell him to sacrifice the years to get the certificate, then laminate or glaze it and present it as birthday gift to his mum!!!
Then he should go back and pursue his dream!!!

Am a medical student here in uniport,I study medicine for passion sake and love of saving life. Truth be told when you get to 500L (thinking which area of medicine to fit in,and what to do,the life you'll live once out) even before your housemanship, you'll be able to understand why medicine is hard. Not for money, but you're dealing with human lives, reason they select the best to equip these knowledge.
Now,you've phone incase it's hard to follow, show me the richest doctor in Nigeria and how much he earns or have in his account including assets? Doctors are just comfortable with the little pay, meaning you won't beg,but atleast you have something daily to eat.
Did I say Nigeria only? Ok,search the latest Forbes most richest men's list just released this month, who are the billionaires? The only top billionaire that got me feeble in medical field is one Chinese guy (ranks no.15 with $67.7B worth) Zhong Shanshan by name, and he's a Pharmacist. They're several other Pharmacist in the list about 120 of them in pharmaceuticals. Then you go down the list to see 59 doctors majority which are in medical devices productions (not surgeons or physicians),even with that they highest Doctor is in 71 position($24B worth). A huge gap. So where is the pride she's saying doctors are rich? Is it to compare with Nigerian bankers this days who are riding expensive cars, those in telecoms,in oil& gas, constructions, pastors,or cosmetics,importer/exporter, agriculture or our politicians? She dare not say that in public. If she wants the title,I'll agree doctors still deserve the respect for the title after many years of training.
So to advice you young candidate and to those reading this. If you have passion for medicine,do all you can to get in there,BUT** if you DON'T**,please don't let pressure from anyone leads you there, you'll be frustrated and perhaps drop out. If your parents insist as they're ones paying your fees,do like Doctor Sid (finish in UI), Peruzzi(finish in Ukraine), Kiki (finish in Lagos) and host of other musicians to drop the certificate for them let them accept it then face your beautiful life.
Also is age, consider how old you're now. I'll advice do the course you like because majority of drop outs, and runs-girls on campus just do a course they don't love, hence frustrate and just continue with lots of carry over so people don't say they didn't go to school. That will not be any Nairaland's portion after reading through this. Stay healthy!

I don't think the op's mum actually want him to be the richest doctors on earth ,even those pharmacist you mentioned are into drug production not dispensary ie in a gov hospital or whatever .
his mum just wants him to evade the job problem we have in nigeria nothing else ,
the frustrations are there ,but I think making him see reasons why medicine is the better alternative is better instead of forcing medicine on him .
tbh there's more to life than what happens on the Internet. the life outside respects doctors and she's not completely wrong ..

however the bigger question should be can he actually do it ?

Your mum is going to ruin your brother's life if she continues to insist on this. Take it from me there is nothing in medicine. Let him follow his passion and study a course he loves. Preferably let him study something computer or IT related because that's the future. Tell your mother not to ruin her son's life.
Even the IT it's overrated abeg and is too saturated now

Lol we that are studying it are looking for escape routes. Many people forced to study medicine have psychotic issues at the end of the day. I have class mates that are roaming about. Can your brother read 16hrs a day. Or be on calls for weeks.can he beat the mental stress of repeating classes?
Laslas medicine is not lucrative in Nigeria. You must go abroad to make it so there's no point.
