mvphenryeto5: I dont get it, what is the relationship between your initial question of Luminous snd the trailer truck battery you mentioned?? Anyway just to double down on Valto's advice, the new Luminous batteries being supplied in Nigeria by Simba group keep giving people serious tales of woe.... infact I am sure they are one of the main parties responsible for why so many Nigerians feel buying batteries and inverters are a waste as they are the main player in the market. 2 Likes |

Just a thought, is it that people can't phrase questions or responses properly, or we as Nigerians have this mentality that we know it all? If we're sure of our facts and already have a mindset based on whatever notion, why come to a public forum to ask for enlightenment when one already has their mind made up. Food for thought I guess. Una well done oh 1 Like |

taiwooguns33: Ok this is going to be long, but I should have dropped this post ages ago. Late last year I was in the need of some new batteries as my gels had died prematurely and my experiment of using car batteries as backup was becoming spent. Luckily for me, one of the top posters on the top alternative energy thread on NL posted that he had some used batteries for sale. A hoard of Quanta and Genus batteries. My instinct was to seal the deal on the Quantas as universal (including international) feedback on them has been positive, the only issue was the said poster felt that the Quantas were "average" and he could only vouch for the Genus. I got to his house, as lovers of AE we gisted a bit. He brought out a device, I am almost certain it is better than the one you posted and tested the batteries for me. The Genus passed the test with flying colours while the Quantas performed poorly. He then taught me a very important lesson about "Resistance" which is one of the main parameters these devices use to tell you if a battery is good or not. In simple terms for us here, Resistance is how well a battery holds a load without dropping voltage i.e. if I put 12 amps on a 200amp battery that has been fully charged and reads 13v.... roughly it should maintain 12.7-12.8v (12.7 is a full battery) for at least 30 mins or more. So long and short, the measure of voltage drop when load is applied. The Quantas failed miserably in this. So I went ahead, against my instinct, and only got 2 of the Quantas and then 2 Genus as my host had been kind enough to educate me and give me the history of the batteries (the Genus were clearly newer and seemed to have also been charged regularly with Solar, and the Quantas looked abandoned). The price of the Genus was almost double the Quanta because he could vouch for them. In fact he was kind enough to still give me a discount on the Quantas further. Easily my best experience buying batteries. Once I got home, for the first few days, my Walensehe was exclusively charging the "Average" Quantas individually. I had about 2 ammeters at that time so I was easily able to measure amps going into the battery and amps going out. Within 2 days I was messaging my host that the scrap Quantas were easily giving me 100amps individually and staying above 12.2v. I thanked him profusely. After a week or 2 I decided to try my "genius" Genus batteies which I now wanted to sell seeing as the 2 Amarons are quite sufficient for my power needs. Once again I tetsted individually. I slapped 12amps of load on it and again it was doing perfect, voltage not even flickering and staying above 12.8v. I felt so blessed. Not up to 2 hours I heard a strange cry......my inverter was screaming .....I checked all my devices and I couldn't believe what I saw. Voltage on my Genus was saying 10.5....I checked load, still the same 12 amps and finally I checked my cumulative amps 16amps!! 16amps from a 200 amp battery that had passed all tests and I bought at a premium!! I was stunned. I quickly tested the second one and the exact same behaviour was noticed. It cut off at around 17amps. I don't think any batterys have shocked me as badly as this did. Now i did not inform my gracious host about this as it clearly was not his fault. These are the dangers of buying used batteries, they are a gamble, and you must always be ready to sell as scrap. But the lessons learned are tremendous. I also blamed myself a bit and I would tell you why. You see I did not want to buy the brand Genus, as i had previous experience of it. A friend that I had introduced to the inverter world earlier bought 2 brand new batteries from the main distributor Simba and within 6 months he was calling in warranty and they replaced one for him. I put it down to the fact that the cheap inverter he got from Simba could have poorly charged it. A few months later the whole system became pointless. That was my experience of Genus and why I showed hesitation in buying them. So to answer your question, no test is superior to a properly run load test.... and clearly a properly run load test for Hours and not a few seconds as these devices do! 4 months later, I am still enjoying my Quantas- even added solar and the Genus bank (now connected together in parallel) can now produce 60amps ( from 400 oh, lol) but only about 50 amps if put on that same load of 12 amps. @ saint2ace How far? Did you also buy the Genus or only the Quanta? 3 Likes 1 Share |

BLS1: Reading ur write up is just like watching a movie with you as the main character, lucky you I must say cos u got the quanta, I so wanted to take the quanta cos like u said it was sold for dirt cheap but the charging algorithm for quanta discouraged me, as the users had a prag inverter which means absorb charge would hit 14.5v and quanta could only take 13.8v max. Long story short 2pcs of Genus batteries connected in parallel couldn't do a 100w load for 1hr, so I counted my losses and sold as scrap, lost half my money I less than 4days, even crypto no bad reach that one..lolz So lessons learnt, always stick to an established brand. However, not all used battery scenerios are sad, as I bought 2pcs fullriver batteries from a nairalander in October for dirt cheap, bros wanted to swap out his old batteries of 2yrs for 2 brand new ones, so I went on a trip to gbagada, took the batteries off him for an amazing price (bros God bless you for ur good heart) and got home; charged the batteries full and dropped a load of 400w on the batteries. I was waiting for the inverter to sing the melodious tune it was known for, but Celine never sang, waited for almost 6hrs before Celine rose from her slumber. Wow, I was impressed and funny as it sounds that's my main battery bank till date and it's still firing on all cylinders. So the tales of used batteries are one of beauty and the beast, but for well established brands like fullriver, quanta, monbat and if u're lucky to get the original then Ritar, it's a worthwhile risk. I hope these has been able to educate someone out there. Cheers... 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Re: How To Create A Locally Made Inverter With Ease by BLS1: 8:25pm On May 02, 2021 |
saint2ace: Lol @ the watching a movie bit bro, I believe its a compliment. I was certain you were the lucky person who came before me and scooped away most of the Quantas, he said the person was also a nairalander and was the person who even made him sell cheaper. Funnily I use the Wanlesanhe to charge the Quanta's and it usually takes it to 14.2v with no issues noticed. I once tried to go higher with the charger in manual mode and instantly I stopped once I started smelling acid. Even my solar is set to take it to 14.4 and not noticed any degradation yet. I can't remember where i read that it's a good thing to take used LA batteries above their manufacturer voltage.... apparently helps to fight sulphation. Good battery brands make sense, a word is enough for the wise on this. 3 Likes |

BLS1: I was the first to get there on the said day, all the batteries were still there could have scooped the whole bunch if I wanted to then lolz, but that's in the past, I have no regrets whatsoever, I believe it was the price to pay for experience. Good to hear ur batteries are jamming to the beats, I hope we get to hear positive feedbacks from individuals once we begin to shun fake products and embrace more premium brands, pricey yes but definitely worth its weight in gold. Shalom!!! |

KEY POINTS BETWEEN RELAY & SERVO STABILIZER AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators) or Voltage stabilizers have become something of great importance to every family and business alike to help protect electrical equipment from irregular current coming in from the national power grid. These AVRs helps to regulate the voltage supplied from the national grid such that it will deliver the required amount of voltage required for the family or business equipment if the incoming voltage is within what the AVR can regulate. The production of this Stabilizers started with the use of an electromagnetic relay system that helps in selecting the right part to adjust the incoming voltage. This method came with its own strength and weakness. Later, another method was designed with the use of electronic circuit for the adjustment purpose. This method also comes with its own strength and weakness. The initial technology that is also used for the production of Stabilizer is called the relay technology while the other technology is called the servo. Relay Voltage Stabilizers / AVRs (Automatic Voltage Regulators): With the relay technology in stabilizer, the electronic circuit inside the stabilizer compares the output voltage with a reference value that has been provided and built-in to reference voltage source. Anytime the incoming voltage goes higher or lower than normal, the control circuit switches in the Stabilizer switches to the corresponding relay to connect a desired tapping for the output voltage. The relay technology comes with a ±10 % output voltage accuracy. This type of stabilizer is mostly used for low rating appliances in homes, offices and industries as they are of low weight and low cost. However, this technology comes with certain limitations which includes low voltage correction speed, less durable, less reliable, among other issues in the stabilizer technology. At the same time, researcher has developed a later technology for the stabilizer and this is called the servo controlled system. This technology attempts to resolve the accuracy of output and the delay time in the relay technology of stabilizers. Servo Voltage Stabilizers: The Servo voltage stabilizer consists of the servo motor, Buck Boost transformer (BBT) and Autotransformer among other elements. The voltage that comes out of the servo stabilizer is voltage across the Buck Boost transformer (BBT). One end of the primary BBT is connected to fixed tap of autotransformer and the other end is connected to the shaft of the servo motor. Whenever the incoming voltage is too high or very low within the input range, the servo motor in this servo type of stabilizer moves across the autotransformer in such a way that the voltage induced across the secondary BBT is equals to set output voltage. This type of stabilizer is called a servo stabilizer because it uses a servo motor to enable the voltage correction. Servo voltage stabilizers have a rugged construction and can sustain high fluctuation and it is more durable. It is mainly used for high output voltage accuracy, usually ±1 % with input voltage changes up to ± 50 %. If we compare servo stabilizers with relay type stabilizers we can find various advantages of servo voltage stabilizer such as higher correction speed, high precision of stabilized output, capable of withstanding inrush currents and most importantly the high reliability. SERVO STABILIZER ! : -Servo motor is used for controlling unit of voltage level. -Level of protection is high. -Servo motor has good step size resolution for correction of voltage. -It will give balanced output which may be ±1% error. -It is available for higher rating more than 1 KVA. -This stabilizer can be used in the industries as well as at homes. -Cost of servo motor is more than relay. -This stabilizer is used in the communication line. RELAY STABILIZER ! -Relay is used for controlling the voltage level. -Relay has lower size of resolution. -It will not give stabilized output with accuracy. -It is for low rating. -This stabilizer can be used at homes. -Cost of relay is lesser than servo motor. -Level of protection is low as compared to servo type. -This Stabilizer is basically used in home or for small scale purpose. Re: How To Create A Locally Made Inverter With Ease by eleojo23: 9:17pm On May 03, 2021 |
IQUIT: Your truck battery doesn't undergo deep discharge that is obtainable in inverter systems. Car batteries are designed to produce enough current/voltege mostly to start the car (cranking voltage) after that, it is pretty much kept afloat and not deeply discharged so it can last for years as long as the car charging mechanism is good. But if you employ it for cyclic use, it will die in a few months. Deep cycle batteries are designed to withstand deep discharge and recharge. So you can discharge them continuously over a long period to a set voltage without damaging the battery. 4 Likes |

IF U HAVE AND ANJING CHARGER OR WANLESANHE, u can try it out, it wont work as perfect as deepcycle batteries o!!! but it works, if u have one sitting arround doing nothing ,u can just use for testing, still monitoring mine though......so far its ok but not as good as a deep cycle battery, ***mine is a calcium 100ah battery for generator**** 2 Likes |
