Olofin is one of Oduduwa's son. Olofin had some family problems which made him to consult ifa,who advised him to vacate Ile-Ife to a distant land.
The oracle instructed Olofin to dig a portion in his father's house where he would found a mud plate and a beaded crown.
As instructed by the oracle, Olofin dug and found the items as predicted by the Ifa.

Ifa instructed Olofin to sacrifice a black ram and ended up sacrifice a white ram which later turned to black.
He then used it to sacrifice before placing the sacred plate on the river, which he sailed after ifa directed Olofin, they should settle where the plate would finally sink. Several days after leaving Ile-Ife the plate suddenly stopped at Olokemeji near present-day Abeokuta.

And seventeen days,it began moving again. It later stop for another seventeen days at Oke-Ata. At the end of seventeen days, the plate began moving again only to stopped again at southern outskirts of Abeokuta. Where it stayed for another seventeen days. At this location, some of Olofin's followers decided to remain, led by a man named Osho-Aro-bi-Ologbo-egan. The mud plate continued again down the river, only to stopped for the fourth time at Isheri where it remained for much a longer period of time.

Owning to this, Olofin began instructing his followers to begin setting up a permanent settlement, but after 289 days(17*17) the plate began moving again. And when it did, only few followers joined the Olofin to follow the plate. The rest of the group decided to stay behind. They had only journeyed for two days when the plate stopped briefly at Iddo in Lagos.
It was at Idumota in central Lagos the mud plate sank into the bottom. After whirling on the water, when Olofin returned to his group at Iddo, they are said to asked him where the plate was. He answered "Awo ti ri" meaning the "plate has sunk" this is how the name Awori is said to have come into being.

Oriki of Awori
Mariwo eh eh, agan eh eh
Mariwo tu yeri yeri
Awori omo Akesan, Omo Oloko ni ilu Isheri
Omo iwaju oloko to n'so owo
Eyinkule Oloko to n'so ejiba leke
Omo ogendengede oloko to ntan yebe yebe oju omi

My Awori people complete the Oriki.
Awori speak a distinct North West dialect of Yorubiod Languages that belong to the larger Niger-Congo language group.
Awori Yoruba dialect remained a uniform among the various groups. Oro, Egungun, Gelede festivals are the major festival.
We have Awori people in Badagry also. Awori people are into farming and fishing. Those that lives in coastal areas of Lagos are fisherman. Awori people practice traditional religion aside christianity and Islamic Religion. Masquerades are a major part of Awori tradition; Ogogo, Eyo masquerades and Kulodo are popular among Awori.

It was the Awori's that accommodated the Eguns in the late 17 th Century when they were fleeing from the Dahomey Army.

Not so, Badagry is Egun and they are also found in Ogun state.
Describing that they fled from the interior to the coastline is fallacious, only the Aworis will think in such cynical way.
The Akran of Badagry is a first class Chief

Satisfied?

The Eguns fled the Dahomian Wars in the Benin Republic and were rehabilitated and given land by the Awori Yoruba because the Eguns and the Yorubas are Originally first Cousins.

The Eguns descended from a branch of the Yorubas Called the Popos

The first Popo King was also a Son of Oduduwa

When they say the Sons of Oduduwa ruled everything West of River Niger all the way to Ghana it is not a joke

The ALake of Egbaland is also a first-class Oba and Abeokuta is only about 200 years Old.

Never you quote Wikipedia here on this forum, didn't your lecturers and supervisors teach you that?

You speak with bias, these are not substantial
Abeokuta means under the rock, back then the people were constantly running to it from outside forces

The truth most be so painful to you since you would have loved to accuse the Awori Yoruba of Land grabbing

Awesome thread @op
But,

i have gone through the thread and one thing I still don’t understand is whether awori are a Yoruba sub-group or not?

Am confused since have come across some threads here on Nairaland saying they are not yorubas which is why am asking lol.
Re: Origin Of Awori by pongwa(m): 9:06pm On May 01, 2021
I appreciate the history lessons shared so far. However, history suggest the original settlers of the coastal regions were the Dahomey people which are both present day Nigerians and Benininoise. Awori people were Yoruba who MIGRATED from Ile-Ife (arguably). Let's get that fact right. I am happy to be both Awori and Egun smiles

Aworis didnt migrate from any ile ife they migrated from dahomey and through trading with the yorubas they original language began fading off to yoruba

Language is a heritage of any race. Egun language is synonymous with Dahomey people. Aworis speak Yoruba dialect. What does that tell you? I just beat you at your game

I thought we have passed the ages of using such Archaic word. I would prefer ethnic group instead.
