Such people will miss good cars from someone like me. I paint my car when the scratches are too many. Whereas, I give my car topnotch maintenance. For instance, I don't joke with recommended oil spec. I have a car I want to sell now. And I just decided to give it full painting. So, first body isn't always the good way to know good cars.

Worst feelings ever, it has happened to me couple of times, the 3 times I happened to b at the receiving end made me vow never to embark on such ride, no matter where d divide falls. One olosho did it to me ard Babatunde Anjous, I saved her number for return match, but I've let that slide. Another make up artist did her own, very painful, just from Onike to Abule Ijesha on a very free road. I never knew d car in front of me was heading to same location, I even place a call to her a min to arrival and she was still leading me on, only to got dia and saw someone fitting make up kit inside d trunk, call her couple of times, but she won't pick until I shoot her text msg.

How to Know problematic vehicles

Answer: Get a professional to Inspect before buying.

I will just add to what Felicity001 already hinted.

Problematic Vehicles
There are some vehicles that are straight up from hell, and assembled by the devil and his cohorts, there is really nothing you can do to salvage their manufacture errors.

Then there is the class that became bad due to usage, abuse, flooded, or leaden with electrical issues.

The above fall under the class of great vehicles that could turn out bad.

Your choice of vehicle is good, or rather great.

So how do you avoid buying a problematic one.
You are Either buying Nigerian Used, or Foreign Used

Things to Look out for

For Nigerian Used.

1. Abuse.

Abused vehicle turn out to be problematic, as much as possible, avoid them.

Pointers of Abuse.
1. Switch on the ignition, do not start the vehicle.

Is the fan on. If it is, one abuse out of many:
If you can, avoid buying this type.

2. Open the oil cap.
If the sludge build up is obvious and thick enough like butter from fridge. Avoid.

3. This might be hard to come bye, but if you look enough, you will find. Open the radiator cover. Water or Coolant? If inside the radiator looks brownish. Avoid[/b]

4. Start the vehicle, let it run. Lights on the dash like it is Christmas. Abs, Vsc, check engine, Airbag, everything just full the cluster. Avoid.

5. Open the Bonnet: If you see wires flying around, plenty cut cut, join join, tape tape. Wahala

The kind of problems you dont want to inherit.

1. Accidented vehicles that has compromised structural integrity.

How do you know, not a hard rule.

- Look at tyres. Do you have uneven wears.

- With a eye view. Does the alignment seem right.

*****There is nothing wrong in buying a freshly painted Nigerian used vehicle. often times, the seller is trying to hide something. *****
And here is the logic, why do you want to spend extra on a paint job for a vehicle you want to sell.

As much as possible, stick with first body.

You can replace engine, transmission, bad interiors. But a vehicle wey don wor. Nna. Avoid.

Avoid vehicles with rust. The problem no dey finish.

Hard rule, if i see a vehicle that is freshly painted, and it is Nigerian used, i wouldn't even assess it twice.

******Smoking Engine.
Check the smoke from the exhaust, blue, black smoke. Avoid.

*******Bad Transmission.
Depending on how much they are offering for the vehicle. Knowing you have a bad transmission or engine puts ahead and bargaining right.

For the transmission: Check the fluid: If it looks fresh. Like they just changed it.

Hard rule! Dont buy.

A diagnosis can also reveal if there is a transmission fault.

To really test a vehicle and be sure it the gear is good. Request for a test drive, fuel enough. Drive from Iyanaba to Ikorodu.

Most transmission shift problems are only noticed when the car is hot, and well driven

For the Engine.
The engine oil. Check the dipstick. If it is fresh, and they just did an oil change.

My hard rule. Suspicion. What are they hiding?

Noise.
Noise on start up, avoid. Continuous tappet valve noise from the top.

Great if engine has not been opened before. Major repair like a gasket change.

The Cars Booth.
The Nigerian vehicles booth reveals a lot about a vehicle and the problem the current owner is battling with.

Transmission fluid cans, brake fluid, replaced fuel pumps, bad alternator belts in the booth are tell tale sign of a problematic vehicle. Fuel jerry cans, coolant ......

Yes. I dont expect the booth to be empty, and squeaky clean. If it is, i know i am dealing with a pro.

Buying from direct owners is the best Bet. There is nothing wrong in buying from a dealer. But direct owners are not sales men. You will have some that are honest enough to tell you why they are selling.

Avoid Stolen Vehicles:
If you are buying from direct owner, ensure name on paper is the same with account you are paying to.

Verify Documents
Easy, like always do, call up my contact. If details dont tally. Run.

Maybe there is need to do a post on what constitute complete papers, if browse car talk enough. You will find enough info.

Do a vin check

Get a professional to Inspect before buying.

Well, if you can follow the above, you are also pro

Note: Whatever is bad in a vehicle can be fixed. Some can cost you your sanity. Theres really no car fault that does not have a fix

Phew! It's amazing the amount of knowledge/tricks and advisory that can be harnessed from this single thread.

This has easily become one of my favorites in all of Nairaland forum. I can tell for a fact there are way more spectators than active participants.

I just want to use this medium to quickly appreciate Kanu, Feli, pope, dru, bishop, pope, chillex, Dmechy and Mama Rad, eyinola, Baz, Ghost, Deedee to name a few.

...Una too much, stay safe

The problem here is the app companies who do not penalise riders for cancellation. Nigerians being who they are, have used those lapses to their advantage, they think they are smart when they do this without knowing the implication of what they do.

If one is to drive a distance to pick a rider, the trick is to always call and update the rider of your movement. That's if you think the trip is juicy and worth it. This can make some of them to wait for you. Otherwise, avoiding long distance pick ups is advisable. Also, if a rider fails to call or show genuine interest in a particular order, approach such pickups with serious caution. This is where instincts and intuition comes into play.

Next thing I saw one baba with big daddy packed behind me, we where still exchanging pleasantries and I was trying to asking the name of the person that ordered him since he said ikeja, then when the young girl jumped into his car. Na so baba zoom off with the same rider I'd been waiting for.

Let me see if I can help you remotely.

What's the current millage?

Check the custom papers to know the date it first entered 9ja

Check for engine check light if its on (though some electricians usually by-pass it but a good mechanic and those experience can easily tell if truly by-pass)

Check for Oil leakages for both engine and gear box.

Turn on the engine, fire down aggressively and then Check for presence of oil on the exhaust pipe on your finger tip.

You can also try blocking the exhaust pipe with your palm while asking somebody else to fire down for you. A sound engine will only deposits little particles of vapours on your palms without any form of smoke present.

Shaft dislocation is a commons problem with big daddy, so check for cracking noise while making a 90° and 135° turn both left and right.

Pay attention for suspension noise during drive test.

If you're satisfy with the car tell seller you like to do a long drive test on a free road before you buy, this will help you confirm if transmission is in good condition.

Lastly, big daddy is one car I know to have a good AC system. So if the AC doesn't chill under hot Sun and both in traffic just know that the compressor is bad, don't be deceived with the talk of "gas needs topping"

I hope this guild you to properly, otherwise employ the services of one of our own Dmechy or blackbishop here for a professional inspection
the car was brought in to Nigeria 2015
