On Sunday, last two weeks my mom got a bank alert notification, someone sent her 3 million naira, she wasn't expecting money from anyone.

She was shocked, she called I and my younger sister. We couldn't believe it, so we waited for three days to see if the bank will reverse the money, they didn't, so I and my sister took our mom's ATM card to withdraw and test if the money was genuine.

We bought three phones from it. That's when we believed it was real. Then I transferred #50,000 to my bank and transferred #50k into my mom's other account which we used for foodstuffs.

On the fifth day the bank froze the remaining balance of the huge money sent. But no bank official or staff called my mom. That week passed, on the 3rd day of the second week, one lady called my mom by phone in the afternoon, she said her name is Sarah from so so bank.

My mom is not literate so they spoken in pidgin, she told my mom that she knows that my mom received a #3mil last two weeks and she has spent out of it. That the money was government money. Sarah told my mom to go to any nearest ........bank and write a mandate letter authorizing the bank to unfreeze the remaining #2mil in her acct and the bank will give us the beneficiary account which she will send the money back to. And we should return the money we spent out of it immediately.

When we got to my mom's bank, we went to customer agent area, instead of writing the mandate letter, we told the agent everything that happened leaving nothing untouched. the agent said we should give him the number of the staff that called us, when he called the Sarah with his phone, Sarah gave him another name, instead of introducing herself as Sarah, she said her name is Evelyn. She now told the agent to hold my mom down till she (Evelyn) gets to that bank to arrest my mom or whatever.

The agent said on what basis would he hold my mom down. The agent checked the description when the money was sent and he couldn't understand the description. He was saying how could this be government money. He told my mom to try and return the money spent and he told us to go.

The description on the transfer when it came in on Sunday was: "National Procurement of Scanners" #3million.

Is this truly a government money?

Nairalanders what are your opinions? Because my mom is scared, Sarah or Evelyn bullied her on the phone with jail time.

I don't know what to do.

my brother even the covi 19 money they supposed to share for us thats how they are doing it. They're splitting the money to different account for their own used.

Maybe the person they wanted to sent his/her own share to didn't respond to called so they quickly used ur mum's account temporary.

Only G will comprehend me.

The possibilities

1) Its Government money for procurement but sent to a wrong account.

2) Its Government/company stolen money, but deliberately sent to a wrong account so that it cannot be traced.

I will go with possibility 2.

Why 2?? If it was government account, she wouldnt need to change her name from Sarah to Evelyn.

Also, if it was government money, she wouldn't tell you guys to pay the rest little by little.

Also, if it was governments money, they would have invited you guys to the affected ministry for better discussion.

Money sent from the government account starts with FGN for federal or LASG, RSG, ONSG etc. for state governments.

Do this. Collect the account number they want you to send the money to. If it is an individual account, just know that they are going to put your mom in trouble. They are trying to use her account to steal money. Report to the necessary authorities.

NEVER SPEND MONEY SENT TO YOU IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SENDER. YOU SPENDING IT SHOWS YOU'RE PART OF THE SYNDICATE THAT STOLE THE MONEY.

For spending out if the money you had no idea how it came about tells much about ur level of intergrity. Buying three phones and sending 50k to ur mum's second account shows how wasteful you people are. I pray the law take it's full course.

Nairalanders what are your opinions? Because my mom is scared, Sarah or Evelyn bullied her on the phone with jail time.

I don't know what to do.

1.Let me tell you the story of a homeless man who found thousands of dollars in cash lying on the ground in the USA....the man took the money and went to the nearest police station ...because, as he put it, it could be drug money, and if he spent out of it, he could find himself in a world of hurt.

2.You should not have touched that money at all. You should have left it alone

3.My advice to you is simple. Go and return the money you spent back into your mother's account, then go and report the case to the nearest law enforcement agency. If possible, report the case to the EFCC. That money was not yourss to spend.

Don't listen to anyone who says you are justified in spending the money...because they are suggesting that you commit a criminal offence. Infact, that they have not called the police yet....

Return that money, call the cops, and don't touch it ...and if such happens again...report. That money is not your money.

It a stollen government money they are trying to retrieve from your mum, next time the call tell them that you have already reported the issue to EFCC and see how the scammer will run off your mum, and if they still still disturb your mum go to any EFCC office and report, also inform EFCC that you have spent from the money.

People have gone to jail for spending money not belonging to them because it was transferred mistakenly to their account. You better start looking for how to return the 220k you spent. Because when they come for you, all the people on Nairaland telling you you should have spent more won't be there to help you.

What you did is a criminal offence. And even if it is really a government money that have been laundered, are you sure you want to attract the attention of a laundering syndicate by stealing their money? Ask yourself that. Better go to the bank to clear things up.

It’s like you don’t understand what you have gotten your family into, this is one of the easiest and surest way to serve jail term in even developed countries.

Spending money that was mistakenly paid into your account is punishable with the full weight of the law.

Y’all better start looking for full money. You guys just got a golden ticket to jail.

Which kind of fraudulent entitlement mentality is this?

Whether it is government money or not is irrelevant.

The money is not yours, yet you cajoled your innocent mother to spend it and even bought a phone for yourself out of it.

These people could kill because of money. I have seen such before, they are cabal and highly connected.
But Op , is the money your money?
A little bit of integrity you could not observe and you are part of those that says Government is a thief, then who are you and your family?
Pls return the money in full.
