The federal government has declared war on unknown gunmen annihilating security agencies in the South-East and South-South geo-political zones.

It also refused to adopt the same measures for bandits terrorising citizens and kidnapping school children in Northern Nigeria in exchange for ransom.

While an Islamic cleric continues his campaign, pressuring the government to grant amnesty to the criminals, a former secretary at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Usman Yusuf, said bandits ought not be killed but be provided for.

The government says it will not accede to demands seeking amnesty for bandits attacking and killing civilians and has refused to unleash its military might against them.

There have been increased attacks on security facilities and personnel in the former eastern region. The attacks, TODAY POLITICS learnt, increased after the formation of Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia arm of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), late last year.

Addressing online publishers during a meeting on Tuesday Mr Mohammed said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will crush the criminals in the Southern part of the country while their counterparts in the North continue to be at large.



“Soldiers, as well as the police, customs, and other security agents, have been killed and maimed in some parts of the country in this growing trend of targeting security forces,” the minister said. “I want to say unequivocally that any attack on our security men and women is an attack on the state and a declaration of war against the nation. It follows, therefore, that this will be countered with overwhelming force.

“When those whose responsibility it is to protect us are themselves being subjected to mindless attacks, it can only be for one reason. To instil fear and evoke a sense of pervasive insecurity among the people.

“Whether known or unknown gunmen, those engaging in this dastardly act will pay dearly for their actions,” Mohammed added.

FG is behind the UGM and some mumu ppl from the East are supporting them. The whole thing was orchestrated and planned by dem and ESN and Igbos will take the fall in the end becos their support of the activities of the UGM is all the govt needed

Dats where they are not falling for the plot. Instead of to distance demselves from the carnage they are busy celebrating and applauding it to their own detriment. That is why the govt will keep setting dem up to fail everytime

The federal government should do the right thing by restructuring the nation. If the nation is properly restructure, the agitations will die naturally.
Use of force will never solve it, It will only lead to more escalation...

Why are Ipobians always celebrating whenever UGM carried out a successful hit against security agents and defend them when they are in trouble?

Sometimes when you look at all these madness going on in the country you couldn't help but feel for the SE they are really being persecuted by the Buhari led cabals. I wish they could get their freedom. It's so sad

As for me a bonafide son of the south east, I welcome any solution that will end senseless killings in the region. If they want to pamper the northern bandits that's up to them but my parents are based in Anambra and I want then to be and feel safe and with this menace of unknown gunmen the southeast is gradually becoming an unsafe environment.
I don't have the means to keep them safe if they should be attacked so I hope any government's initiative work out well to return peace to the region.
As for the "bandits" in the north I hope the government keep tackling them with the same fervor but my Paramount now is the southeast and my relatives.

Well if this will facilitate the end of this senseless killings going on in the once peaceful SE, and reinstall the peace we once enjoyed.
Then it's welcomed.
But the SE leaders must be on guard to ensure this overzealous army does not throw the rules of engagement out in the air.

I wouldn't have had problem with it if it is the same modus operandi that was deployed against terrorist, bandits and marauding herdsmen. But, upholding the law for one and bending the same law for another when they have committed the same crime is the definition of INJUSTICE!
If good thing is done with bad intention, that is the definition of EVIL
You choose to look away at one person's offence but look into it when another person commits the same offence and you make us believe you are being sincere is the definition of HYPOCRISY.
All the above are the characteristics of this administration.
The insecurities in the land need to stop but, a holistic and not selective approach needs be adopted.
