He cobbled up a country as an invading imperialist. He didn't come to work for you! He came to work for his masters and he did a good job by setting up the country in a way that it will be profitable for his parent country.
Colonialism over, they organized constitutional conferences to allow locals decide how best to live together when they're gone. None of the constituent units insisted on going their separate ways. They all agreed to stay together based on the agreements they made. That was also the case between India and pakistan, Singapore and Malaysia etc. But those ones went apart peacefully..
