GRE materials sent to all email address in my mention! I must warn some of you here: stop bombing universities that you see on approved transcript. The U.S has over 5000 colleges and universities. Why must 2500 Nigerians apply to a single school, when there are several other schools with even better admission chance and financial opportunities? I hate to say this, but you need to do your own home work. There's nothing wrong in searching for your own schools, contacting your program department on possibility for admission and financial support before you apply. All you need is time and focus. If you can't do it, seek help. Do not avoid the work as it may land you in disappointment. Be intentional about your dream of studying abroad and be willing to pay the price. By avoiding the work and only applying to schools you see on Nairaland, you deny yourself the possibility of applying to better school with better opportunities that would help secure your visa and make your stay in the U.S smooth. I wish prospective applicants having interview for fall 2021 the best. 24 Likes |

DON'T COPY OTHERS' INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT. This can be one of the potential causes of your refusal if you don't take it. No matter how sweet or good an interview transcript posted here looks, please don't copy it. Create your own proposed interview transcript. I am receiving information that more Nigerians are applying for the F1 visa than ever before. I guess this is due to the economic woes and population boom. Note that the more applicants there is in the pool, the more selective the approval will be. By this I mean if 200 students apply, the consular will sort through their interviews to approval students they deem credible or say something reasonable and with better profile. Yes, there's a room for favour and grace of God, but note that you are still required to do your own home work. I always say this: craft your response according to your academic profile, research interest, course, scholarship and based on your career objectives. Use your own words to create your own answers. The interview is a pitch to convince the consular. Nothing more. A pitch is a short conversation you have with someone you are communicating an idea/views/answers to. What makes you convince this person and win their approval is your choice of words, how you say it, the tone by which you say it, and based on your profile. You see, it is straightforward. Do not copy people's transcript or you will be limiting your chances of approval and that of other people doing copycat on this thread. Whatever is personal is always unique, and what is unique will be recognized from the crown of over 200 applicants that troop to the U.S embassies. Imagine 5 applicants interviewed by the same VO within 2 days saying same line of word, for example, "Aside the fact that..." or "I have had no reason to travel before..." I am sure such VO would find it boring when the 6th applicant say the same thing. But what happened to saying, "More so", "Also", "In addition", "Although I receive...", OR "I have never been outside Nigeria", "I have not travelled outside Nigeria before", "I have been in Nigeria all my life", etc. I understand that some of you here have never been grilled before, especially talking with a Westerner face-to-face on a visa application you have spent close to 500K or more, and that is why you must understand that you need to be constructive and do it well. The interview is the most important aspect of the entire application. You may get admission from 100 schools, but if you say rubbish during interview or you let fear paralyse you, it won't matter how many school admitted you. Take these instructions to heart and use it to work on your answers. To avoid unnecessary message request in my inbox (except for special cases or people who need personal advise), use the questions below to prepare yourself. CONSULAR: Pass Your Passport and i-20 Please CONSULAR: Why Are You Going to the US? CONSULAR: Why the US? CONSULAR: How Did You Get This School? / How Did You Hear About This School? CONSULAR: How Many Schools Did You Apply To? CONSULAR: What Do All These Schools Have in Common? CONSULAR: Why Did You Choose this School? CONSULAR: Tell Me About Your Academic Background? CONSULAR: Why Do You Need this Masters? / What Will this degree do for you? /What is the relationship between this program and what you do at the moment? CONSULAR: What are those courses you’ll be taking/ Tell me about your program/What is your study plan? CONSULAR: Did You Write Any Standardized Test? CONSULAR: Are you married? CONSULAR: Have You Travelled Before? CONSULAR: Who Is Paying For This? / Who Is Sponsoring You? CONSULAR: What Does Your Sponsor Do? CONSULAR: How Many siblings do you have CONSULAR: What are your career plans / What is your plan after graduation? The questions above are for preparatory purposes only. I am not saying the consular will ask you the questions as listed; you may be surprised; you may even be asked what is not on the list. It is case by case. But remember, if you know you will be interviewed, and you know what the interview would be about, you would likely want prepare to convince the interviewer that you are a credible student and that you have done your home work and that your reason for wanting to go to the United States for studies is genuine! Please tell your truth, always. Be consistent with your answers. Do not nurse fears of what if I am refused, or else, your confidence will be smoldered. You can be refused and that is perfectly okay as there's opportunity for reapplication. All the best! 53 Likes 14 Shares |

[quote author=cliffton post=101881585]The school sent their denial finally on the 13th if may. But surprisingly, this Prof. Is still in communication with me. Infact, this is the message I got from her yesterday: Are you available for a zoom call next week? If so, please let me know what time zone you are in and if you have any time constraints (e.g., summer internship hours, etc.) Do you think anything tangible would come out of this? Try and schedule the interview with the Prof, inform her you'd applied and had been rejected, if she is interested in you and she has funding, there can be a change. |

Please this is for a friend, kindly advise. When he filled the ds160 form, he chose Lagos as the location for the interview but because he didn't get any closer date for the interview in Lagos, he chose Abuja on the appointment form. Now he wants to change the location for the visa appointment to be in Lagos. How can he do this? Is it advisable for him to cancel and pick any date that shows in Lagos for the interview or should he fill another DS 160 form for the Abuja location? PLEASE ADVICE!!! |

Malone122: Thanks so much for the clarification. Please another question is that, what if he decides to cancel the already scheduled visa appointment at the Abuja location which he has selected and has gotten date for interview, is it possible to cancel that appointment and fix date for appointment with Lagos location which is the location on the ds160 form which he has submitted? |

Shoot your shot for Spring or Fall 2022. Try to impress her during the interview. Since you have read her research that should work best. Also, ask her questions. Ask if she's taking on students next year or any opening in her lab. Rebrand your CV and rewrite your SOP. If she is willing to take you on next year, then you can reapply to the school. Good luck! cliffton: 1 Like |

Transcript. Visa Approved (May 20) Lagos consulate. VO: Good morning young man. How're you today? Me: Good morning. I'm fine. How're you too? VO: Fine, too. So tell me what are you going to the US for? Me: I'm going for my Master's degree in Literary and Textual Studies program of the department of English, BGSU. VO: (typing) You said architecture? Me: (quickly cut in, and almost shouting at the top of my voice) I said Literary and Textual Studies. It's a concentration under the auspices of English. Literature part of English studies. VO: (stopped typing) Alright. How many schools did you apply to? Me: Two schools. Namely, NCSU and BGSU. Both offered me admission. VO: So why BGSU? Me: I chose BGSU because of its innovative English program blends both broad based literary courses with practical and flexible courses such as Technical and Professional Editing which for me are greatly responsive to the skill-demands of the present age and align with my own publishing career objectives. More so the opportunity to take additional graduate certificate in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is attractive to me. So those key considerations will allow me hone and improve my expertise in not just editing, but also in writing, research and pedagogy. (Through out this point, his eyes peered, almost were poring into my own eyes, obviously confirming my genuineness.) VO: How did you know about BGSU? Me: I got to know about it via Internet searches, especially USnews.com, having gone through and followed EducationUS posts about studies in US for a couple of months. VO: What will this course do for you? Me: It will avail me the opportunity of taking up a senior editorial role in a publishing firm *UPON MY RETURN TO NIGERIA*, as I'd have acquired the necessary skills and expertises as well as the graduate degree qualification the role required. VO: I see you have full funding here, so who's gonna fund your trip? Me: My uncle. VO: What does he do? Me: He's a thriving businessman and runs hotels in Ogun, Oyo and Lagos states. (The VO fixed his gaze intently at this point also, and I thought perhaps he needed clarification, so I chipped in, 'the hotels are five in number, two each in Ogun and Lagos and one in Oyo.) VO: Fine. What do you currently do? Me: I am a publishing editor at **** one of the leading literary publishing firms in Nigeria. (VO nodded) VO: Are you like a writer also? (He obviously picked this from my Ds-160) Me: Yes. I've published poems, short stories and various-type articles in journals, literary blogs and pages of newspapers. VO: That's great. Think we're good here. I'd approve your visa. So I'd hold on to your passport. (Slid the famous white paper to me and literally droned on about things my overwhelming excitement didn't hear).. NB: The interview wasn't as long as the transcript suggests. In fact it ended as soon as it had begun. I really do not have much advice to those that will soon go for their interviews; just want to say, make sure you tick your boxes very well, know and be sure about why and what you're going to study and it's not bad to check out what you filled in to your Ds-160. I had overheard another VO asking an interviewee why he contradicted what he wrote on the form he filled. Good luck to everyone 28 Likes |
