Can I ask you what are the requirements an aircraft must meet before categorizing an aircraft a 4.5 Gen?
Do they have AESA radars?
It's basically the kinematics, stealth technology, avionics including RADAR type and payloads.
I can't independently confirm if that JF-17 has an AESA radar, but for the aircraft to be classified as such maybe it's fitted in the aircraft. Personally I was thinking it is a 4th generation aircraft, that prolly the Pilot introducing the aircraft made a mistake, or was hyping the aircraft to impress the minister of defence, to encourage him to help lobby for more funds for new purchases. I had to confirm and was told it was actually a 4.5gen aircraft that it was a special order. I no go come dey argue with person with over 4000hrs flight time grin just had to grudgingly agree.

Most likely it was upgraded, it's hard to believe but it's possible. NAF spent extra $25m on each of those aircraft for upgrades.

It's a good buy sha, but I've never liked that aircraft since day one, would have even preferred the Sukhois but na where person money/power reach e go buy. If not that no one will sell an F-16 to us that would have been perfect but again na mumu dey go boutique.

Those three aircrafts delivered to NAF are 4.5 generation aircraft, it was delivered on specifications, just confirmed from an instructor. Subsequent deliveries which have been negotiated for are Block 11 and 4th generation Aircrafts.
And the pilot also mentioned that it can carry the AESA radar. I'm sure he knows his onions.

It depends on which F-16 you are talking about because the NAF JF-17 already exceeds the F-16 in three different areas of capabilities. Personally I have always preferred the JF-17 because I'm always wary of any US purchase. My point being to look how we can reach a deal with the Chinese and Pakistanis to set up an assembly plant here in Nigeria. I look more at the sovereign choice in weapons grade acquisitions than the asset in of itself.

LoL an AESA radar is 10 times more effective than a mechanically-steered planar array. How can you say something which is hard to detect, has a better range in BVR mode, and more functionalities aren't better. Why are most aircraft upgrading to AESA or PESA radars. Because it provides better range, low detectability, less prone to failures, demands less maintenance between flights and is better resistant to ECM. Even the Pakistani say it themselves, the only GEn 4.5 is block 3. what more do you want to hear. The Americans or whosoever you have called are not biased because the definition of a gen 4.5 is global.

The Americans are the largest weapons merchant in the world and the most biased. You are only reinforcing what I said about the AESA in simple lay man's terms. The Pakistanis are simply giving the aircraft added advantage.

What is the point of this rant?

The JF-17 is classified across the world as a light weight 4th generation aircraft.

This designation would not change until the block 3 enters service.

Which rant anyways whatever percolates your fantasy. You can't be so naive to contradict a veteran fighter pilot with thousands of flight hours and be taken serious. Only f.ools would buy what you are selling because you read it on paper rather than in practical terms.

Would designation change it from lightweight if the Block 3 enters serial production

Being classified lightweight doesn't demystify its status as a 4.5 generation fighter jet.

The Block II JF-17 and SAAB Gripen C/D are in the same class.

Light weight and 4 GEN.

Actually I expected better from you.

What is all this effort at discrediting a fighter pilot who has danced in the skies with ace fighter pilots of the Pakistan Air Force. He's word is good and NAF JF-17 is 4.5 generation.

The JF-17 in Nigerian service outstrips the Gripen in service with the SAAF by far. The former Pakistani Air Chief himself said the JF-17 now exceeds 4th Generation Aircraft in performance. He's on record saying so.

I hope you'd apologize when I bring evidence.

The jf 17 we have is 4+ generation, to be declared a true 4.5 generation, it needs to be at least 4++, where by it has 5 generation avionics e.g su35, mig 35, f16 block 21, f15 silent eagle, proposed f21(proposed advanced f16 for india), the most recent gripen and a few others......our block 2 isn't 4.5, even the cockpit, shows it isn't 4.5

Una channels television dey call the JF-17 another name an example of the ignorance that pervades the land on military matters.

One feature of the JF-17 Thunder acquired by the NAF is that it is SOW compatible unlike some touted 4th Gen fighter jets by amateurs.

The powerful sound of the JF-17 engines in this video is impressive. The NAF JF-17 is 4.5 Gen. It can share active combat data of the battle space with other jets a capability common with 5th Gen. Jets and IFF capability etcetera

Common with 4th / 4++ generation aircraft. SAAB gripen C/D of SAAF have similar capabilities.

Nothing to prove JF-17 is better than gripen C/D as their capabilities are very similar. The gripen having technological advantage in some areas such as AESA radar, lower RCS and better engines which gives gripen an edge over JF-17 thunder ⚡. That doesn't mean the JF-17 cannot bring down the gripen in combat.

Actually a lot to prove its better than the Gripen in SAAF inventory which are mostly in storage anyway and less fighter pilot hours.
It does not have BVR nor AESA except you mean upgraded Gripens in Europe. There's no edge in a platform you can't employ as you choose or limited to where or how you deploy them.

Of course not arguing is uncalled for I take you for a serious gentleman. I enjoy intellectual conversations. Actually it is public knowledge the SAAF Gripens lack BVR which is acknowledged by it's own Air Force leadership.

On the other hand the NAF JF-17s have the potential capability of deploying China's longest range BVR missile which mitigates some advantages of fighter jets like the Rafale. More important is the sub-systems on an aircraft.

But generally I know you better about these things than to regurgitate about them.

Please nobody crucify me but I must say the truth where it's due, President Buhari may have terrible economic and political policies but in funding military acquisitions he gets an A.

I'm not sure with the previous administration will not be asking now where the money is. President Buhari came in and immediately gave approval for the JF-17s and thanks to President Donald John Trump paid cash for the very powerful and advanced CT/COIN A-29 Super Tucanos plus other acquisitions across board for the military, ONSA and NIMASA.

The current defense minister deserve commendation for effective leadership.

Buying military hardwares like aircrafts is not same as going to buy tomatoes in the market, you don't get such machines off the shelf. You have to place orders for them first and wait for production and delivery, even if you pay upfront there is no guarantee that it will be delivered as it can be cancelled at anytime. NAF DAY 2021 ENDS WITH INDUCTION OF JF-17 MULTI-ROLE
THUNDER AIRCRAFT

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Day Celebration 2021 has ended in Makurdi, Benue State with the induction of 3 newly acquired JF-17 multi-role Thunder aircraft into its inventory. The induction ceremony, which took place today 20 May 2021, was performed by the President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD), Major General Bashir Magashi (Rtd). At the historic occasion, the President stated that the induction ceremony was personally rewarding to him as it marked yet another step in his promise to improve the infrastructure and equipment dispositions of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and other security agencies for enhanced output, professionalism and service delivery. He also added that the induction of the JF-17 aircraft is indicative of how the NAF has continued to advance it capability and capacity over the past 57 years, while developing competencies to achieve its constitutional mandate of defending the Nation’s territorial integrity by air.

The President specially commended the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, for not only remaining at the forefront of the fight against all enemies of Nigeria but also for his numerous initiatives towards bridging NAF human capacity gaps as well as exploiting Research and Development (R&grin) for improved self-reliance. The President went further to commend the resilience and commitment of members of the AFN and other security agencies for ensuring the sovereignty of Nigeria and its indivisibility. He also appreciated the support of the Government of Pakistan and the efforts of the Pakistan Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mohammad Tayyab Azam, at sustaining the strategic partnership between Nigeria and Pakistan while assuring that his Administration would continue to work with members of the international community in order to collectively evolve solutions to the common challenges of terrorism and proliferation of small arms and light weapons. The President also used the occasion to salute the gallantry of personnel who have paid the supreme price in the defence of the Nation while also praying for the repose of their souls.

In his address, the CAS stated that the induction of the newly acquired JF-17 multi-role Thunder aircraft marks the climax of the NAF 57th Anniversary Celebration. This, he said, was yet another milestone of the President Mohammed Buhari-led administration’s unwavering resolve to equip and energize the NAF and indeed the entire AFN towards combating terrorism, insurgency, armed banditry and other threats. Air Marshal Amao also revealed that under President Muhammadu Buhari, the NAF has inducted 23 brand new aircraft into its inventory, comprising 10 Super Mushshak trainer aircraft and 13 rotary wing combat platforms and 5 Mi-35M helicopter gunships. Others are 4 Agusta 109 Power helicopters, 2 Mi-171E and 2 Bell 412 multi-role helicopters. The CAS added that, the induction of the 3 JF-17 Thunder aircraft thus brings the total number of newly inducted aircraft in the last 6 years to 26. The CAS went further to state that, “These aircraft have significantly boosted our operational effectiveness in the fight to defeat all threats to the Nation and its citizenry.’’ He also added that, “Through synergy with surface forces, the freedom of action of the insurgents/terrorists in the North East has been effectively curtailed. Consequently, NAF combat and combat support operations, energized by our up-scaled Order of Battle, have contributed to improving the security situation in the North East, whilst also contributing significantly to dealing with threats in the North West, North Central and other parts of the Country.” Speaking further, the CAS disclosed that the NAF is expecting 20 additional platforms, comprising 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from the United States of America and 8 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that would arrive Nigeria in no distant time. These additional aircraft, according to the CAS, will no doubt inject significant impetus into the NAF’s airpower employment capability in support of joint operations. He added that through the immense support of the Federal Government, the NAF has been able to train 133 new pilots during the period to effectively man the new platforms as well as others being expected. The CAS therefore expressed his deepest appreciation to the C-in-C, for his untiring support towards meeting the operational, logistics and welfare needs of the NAF.

Prior to the induction of the JF-17 aircraft, a Seminar was held at the NAF Officers’ Mess, Makurdi on 19 May 2021 where series of lectures were delivered. Some of the topics featured during the Seminar included “Doctrinal Development and Joint Force Employment: An Appraisal of NAF Operations” and “Standardization of Training and Interoperability of Equipment in the AFN: An Appraisal”. The lectures pooled the intellectual minds of experienced serving and retired senior officers from the Armed Forces, other security agencies and members of the National Assembly who discussed ways of improving synergy and joint operations between air and surface forces.

The induction ceremony was attended by the Executive Governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom, Chairmen of Senate and House Committees on Defence and Air Force, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attairu, Representative of the Chief of Naval Staff, former Chiefs of Defence and Air Staff including Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi (Rtd), Brigadier General Emmanuel Ikwue (Rtd), AVM Abdullahi Dominic Bello (retired) and AVM Femi John Femi (Rtd). Others are Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin (Rtd), Air Marshal Muhammed Dikko Umar (Rtd), Air Marshal Adesola Nunayon Amosu (Rtd) and other senior officers both serving and retired.
