This is the problem with Nigerian education. Philosophy is not taught in secondary schools. People lack understanding of film tropes, literary devices and criticism.

Nowadays, movie audiences (western educated) are smarter and are aware of cliches and repetitions. One has to either create something new or subvert expectations.

For instance, the dark Knight brought out a new type of villain- the joker: a villain who couldn't be reasoned with, charismatic and crazy. A homicidal maniac who enjoyed toying comically with victims. Not only that, it was the only movie at that time that grounded superhero movies in a gritty reality- no superpowers. The dark Knight brought something new to superhero genre.

Then, we have the boys, who subverted the idea of good superheroes. The powerful superheroes are all corrupt. It showed that those with powers will abuse it and wouldn't be good like superman. It was bloody and gritty.

Then, we have subversion in Invincible. Invincible subverted the superhero genre by making it bloody and making a twist where a central character who was regarded as good to be a monstrous beast who saw humans as pets. Not only that, it showed the strugglea and reality of superheroes.


You see, nowadays, for modern audiences to really appreciate your movie, you need something fresh or subversive.


Now, Army of the dead refused to do anything new. They just gave the zombies extra intelligence, which is not really a new thing. See land of the dead.

What Army of the dead could have done is to pit 3 teams of military personnel against each other in a zombie infested Las Vegas to compete for the money while the intelligent zombies pick them off.

Also, Army of the dead could have made the movie more tactical. There should have been different ways of killing the zombies. The smart zombies could have a weakness because of their higher intelligence. Maybe they could only hunt at night which would make the stakes higher and force the team to hold out till morning- seige style.
