It's easy to change a name, many have done it so no chest thumping needed. Our issue is rooted more deeply than just a name. Our people, the good ones will still be good ones even if their homeland changes name, the bad ones unfortunately will also continue, so what is the purpose. On the other hand, I say we keep the name, if we become great again, like we were in the 60's/70's then the name won't matter. Qatar will still be Qatar if it was renamed to Biafra. My people stop thinking small, let's go after the big changes like our Brothers did in Egypt and Libya. PS: As it is I'm very disappointed with all the new states. 19 was enough. |

Our mentality is the whole thing that is costing us backwardness. When we are honest early 70s, Nigeria was great.challenging Great Britain and some developed societies. But when we change to embrace corruption, we went out of the track. the challenging force was decline. Nothing is wrong with name DARKNESS AREA just our mentality and mode of operation is the problem. 1 Like |

This thread is created out of ignorance. Niger is about the people , meaning people with dark skin. Niger area (Nigeria) means the area with dark skinned people. 1 Like |

Remember that we call ourselves the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN), how come we have a Unitary Republic of Nigeria (URN)? It is not about the name, it is about we the people. We the people need reformation of character and re-orientation of thought. If we make positive changes in these two areas, Nigeria will be the land of Milk and Honey that it is meant to be. 1 Like |

Well said, the OP has done some good basic academic research but to say our problem in this country is our name is laughable that name is the principal factor that has stagnated us. A region had that name before amalganation, hence their assumption of ownership and superiority over the other regions. This has eaten deep into them that made them belief they own nigeria, if we change that name then the arrogance is crushed, and nothing to hold on to. we are new and fresh. ALL ONE |

Just name it WAZOBIA or ZOWABIA, or WOZABIA, or any other combination. On second thought, I would rather keep NIGERIA out of respect for her unique place among black people in the world. Lets not forget that one in four of all blacks in the world is Nigerian. 1 Like |

The meaning of Nigeria is "one Nigeria" and one Nigeria is evil. Unless we divide as we are seeing it now, no good things shall come to it. The smallest state in this evil nation called Nigeria is bigger than Singapore. Singapore is a country in Asia and should the country(Singapore) stops bringing fishes to us here, i bet you, no body will eat fishes again in this evil one Nigeria. The agents of satan that called them selves senators in where lucifer have officer called Aso rock are busy parting away more than 15 million naira a month each since 1999 till date while more than 100 million Nigerians live below bread level meaning below $1. All of the above are called Nigeria; one Nigeria; evil Nation where nothing good shall happen unless we break up by introducing the Pandora's box to welcome SNC. After more than 51 years, no light etc. |

Sure niger means black or dark which connotes the colour of our people.Saying it means darkness is fallacious-it is misinformation.Of course Nigeria remains the most populous black nation on earth, so the use of black or dark is not a misplacement. I quite sympathize with your sentiments because our leaders have made us see Nigeria in the light of darkness. But i assure you that if Christ tarries we surely will rise from this our current abysmal doldrum |

Re: Do You Know The Meaning Of Nigeria? by funshint(m): 8:39pm On Feb 17, 2012 |
Your analogy is very wack. It can only breed superstition and ignorance. The name Niger connotes d complexion of d pple in d area which is black and nt d spiritual darkness or whatever u're thinking of. If truly Liberia is living up 2 its name why is d place so unstable after many years of war? Even if Nigeria is named "Heavenria" it makes no diff. because weakedness is alrdy in d heart! |
Re: Do You Know The Meaning Of Nigeria? by Toks2008(m): 9:17pm On Feb 17, 2012 |
The name 'Nigeria' (meaning Niger Area) was first suggested by the girlfriend of Lord Fredrick Lugard, the former British Governor-general of the colony in 1914 The name comes from a combination of the words "Niger" (the country's longest river) and "Area". Its adjective form is Nigerian, which should not be confused with Nigerien for Niger. The origin of the name Niger is unknown. It is often assumed that it derives from the Latin word for "black", niger, but there is no evidence for this, and it would have been more likely for Portuguese explorers to have used their own word, negro, or preto as they did elsewhere in the world; in any case the Niger is not a blackwater river. The name is thus thought to be indigenous, but no convincing origin has been found among the 30 languages of the Niger delta and lower reaches of the river. One hypothesis is that it comes from the Tuareg phrase gher n gheren "river of rivers" (shortened to ngher), originating in the middle reaches of the river around Timbuktu. |

Nice topic and post, i learnt something really new today. but i dont think "dark" or "black" was meant to be used in a derogatory term when they tot of the nigeria. But what do i know? If the whites could sail the seven seas (and all the challenges that it entails) to just come and use black guys to work on their farms and to sleep with the black ladies in the dark when no one is watching. Then giving us a derogatory name is really not worst they've done (i'm just saying) |
Re: Do You Know The Meaning Of Nigeria? by RTFM(m): 10:13pm On Feb 17, 2012 |
Dear, o dear, o dear. I do not usually post or comment on this forum but come on! Niger means black or dark in Latin. It is from Niger that the word negro is derived. The Niger was also know as the black river in pre-colonial times. This is due to the alluvial deposits and soil it carries that now form the Niger delta, one of the largest in the world. The country was named after the river. All it means is country of the blacks. 1 Like |
