I outsourced a job to someone recently. Asked him how much he would like to be paid. Man said N3.5 per word. I was willing to pay even more until I discovered that he used an online tool to paraphrase my work - the tool messed up the whole paper. I was disappointed but I paid anyway.

My point? Don't be too eager to fix prices until you prove your worth. Your client would even offer to pay more. For papers ranging from 2000 - 3000 words, my price is N25-N30k. Note, by papers I don't mean copywriting or content writing.

Find your genre. Define your worth. Fix your price. Everybody is not your client.

Due to lack of jobs, there are forced to accept what little offer comes their way and most Nigerian employers take advantage of this situation.

I have never worked for a Nigerian client when it comes to writing. This is because I know that Nigerians don't pay very well, so I had my eyes on international clients.

I got writing jobs through platforms like Google and LinkedIn. Presently, I am a freelancer on Upwork working for clients abroad.

I recommend freelance platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. They pay better than most Nigerian clients and you can even live off your writing sef.

For example, my worst pay was 50myr ($12) for 1,500 words and that was for a Malaysian client I found through LinkedIn.

My highest currently is $300 for 1,500 words and that's for a client from U.S.

There's money in writing. Just know the skill well and you can earn up to $1000 every month!

A lady I met here pays me between 0.5kobo and 1 naira per word. It's mainly rewriting Sha and I hold no grudge against her. She's my first and only client I have And the money really came handy when I needed to sub.

You may have good intentions, but good intentions doesn't pay the bills or bring food to the table.

Writing is mentally and physically exhausting, and you don't expect someone with responsibilities and bills to pay, to sit his a§s down, and churn out articles upon articles, just to be paid peanuts as incentives.
Where's the motivation going to come from?

It's your responsibility to make sure your writers are well taken care of, and not by a
mere promise to pay N1M by the end of their one year daunting task.

You could and should have done better with your offer.
There are no excuses really!
It was a very poor offer, and only a desperate soul will take up such a ridiculous and ludicrous contract.

Mine was 40$ to rewrite a 20k words content. It was to be in batches of 10$ for 5k word. It was the worst lows of my life. I was broke, hungry and no wear to go. Every morning, my brokeness would stare me in the face and make mockery of me. I took the job,and started. I must say rewriting is harder than the Israelites walking through the Arabian desert.
For 4 days and 4 night I was working till I finished the first batch of 5k words only for the man to return it for revision.
I managed to revise it till he approved the final draft.

Ladies and gents, that was my last time. I didn't go back for the rest of the work. I ran away for dear life.

It's a joint project.


The earnings are not large in itself. But we channel the earnings into works when it amplifies as profit it is shared. I do not even have it in heart that anyone reaches 1 year before been paid.

It depends. If you are just starting, then you should charge at least $10 for 1000 words. Anything less, in my opinion, is exploitation.

I've paid over 5 Million Naira on the past 3 years and half to Nairalanders. Almost 10 Million will go this year to my team.
