I will make my post short ,
Am not claiming to be the best but am one of few people in my town that parents use as example and want their children to learn and became a programmer

I manage my small car and live a life of no competition

I had this friend who wanted to learn programming from me years back but he always thinks that people of Lagos are the God of programming , so he travelled to Lagos and after 2months he came back and stated boosting that he can create heaven and earth ,

He even went further to deceive one of two young boys I was training that they should not listen to me that two months is enough to be a pro ,

Now last week he called me and asked me to assist him to write a code in JavaScript I told him how to do it since he said it was a small task and he is already writing the code just a small issues on how to implement it

After few hours he called me and called I invited him over to my place , after much dragging he agreed to pay and after few minutes the code was ready

Then he wanted to change a value and I told him just change the variable a d behold this bill gates of nigeria don't know what is variable

I was moved to asked him , what and what did they taught him under the two months training he went for that he was boosting about before

He said it was template that all website is template just go to themeforest and find script buy and install and install template and change text and image site is ready

The young boy burst into laughter

I had to follow him and laugh
Like serious , css , JavaScript ,php , python,nodejs, react , bootstrap ,jQuery

U don't know attest two of above mention he was total confused , then I asked him to call his instructor at Lagos to assist to write the script after he said that the instructor know all those mentioned , just for us to test him

he called the instructor and asked him to assist him to write a pure JavaScript to attach a event to all link element after page loading

He said that he should go to themeforest and search for code like that and buy

At this point he drop the call and started begging me to enroll him and tutor him well

Be watchfull most people u are calling programming gurus are just bunch of script installers
Anybody with good brain can install script once u understand English

There is no short cut to programming
It is not just JavaScript or php
When u know fundamental of programming u can switch to any language at any time

When u know the use of if statement and loop , assignment and memory allocations , ways to solve many problems and etc

U can reproduce ur solution in environment
regardless of the language name

One is charging a 200k to teach Data Science in Lagos.
I heard my homeboy saying he is looking for 200k to go learn DS and I was curious to know where.


It's super funny that many young folks believe they can't teach themselves anything unless they pay someone or a firm to teach.
The same set of people do not believe they can get a job on their own without paying for a slot.

It's not their fault: their parents paid for everything that ought to come normally right from their secondary school admission, WAEC centre fixing, to uni admission to NYSC posting and they continue that legacy in life.

Take a walk to computer schools around and see what they are teaching.
I was invited to address some 100+ IT students in a computer school a few weeks ago and I was shocked to see they were being taught: VB.6 with VS 2010.

Not just that, 95% of the class have zero idea on common OOP.
Only a lady could comprehend my questions among the females which were ~ 45% of the class.
I had to reduce the complexity of my talk to absolute beginners and they still didn't flow.
These are all students that have spent over 3 years studying Computer Science and yet, they have zero programming nor technical skill nor understanding of old and modern tech concepts.
And in another year, they will graduate and expect GTB and co to hire them.

I was happy to find a lowkey guy among them that actually knows that VB 6 they were being taught. I quickly introduced him to C# and MVVM and he loved it. Others (mostly ladies) were busy with their phones while some guys paid attention to what I was practicalizing.

I left them wishing I could visit them often and teach them myself. But no. You can't help everyone.

Yes , but knowing data structures and algorithm will help u became a better version of your self

5years on web development I haven't implemented my own binary search or and linked data structure, but knowledge of them helps me know type of data to use and when it is necessary

Nice bro..I paid 450k equivalent in CEDI's here in Ghana to study full stack development..
It's been largely interesting though. I paid that because of the job they promised, and if I finish they don't provide the job,I can sue them to court.
