nairalandankrah: 1.The UK people could have a referendum because the EU's rules allow for it...and because the UK government passed the necessary laws for it. 2.Ibos can't have a referendum on secession because Nigeria's rules don't allow for it....either a referendum or a secession referendum (and don't bring up Southern and Northern cameroons...because both were UN trust territories run on behalf of the UN by the UK...and only got to join Nigeria and cameroon via a referendum...they were not even part of the 1914 amalgamation self) And the only way you can get a referendum is by actively taking part in the political process and getting a law passed to get your referendum. Because asking the Nigerian government to give you a referendum without an enabling law is basically asking for the Nigerian government to act like a dictatorship and do things sans due process. It is that simple, and easy. 6 Likes 1 Share |

I think the two comparisons are not good First EU is not a country Secondly Britain was originally not part of the EU they begged to join EU not the other way round, they were not part of the main EU system so they could leave if they wish... As for Biafra, referendum is a good idea but the question here is, if biafra was established would they allow referendum to people wishing to leave Biafra? The answer is likely No People talk differently when they are in different positions in life, Nigeria cannot give up her land to people who would never be willing to do the same. 4 Likes |

Africa doesn't know what a referendum is.... They only know one word.... Which is war. If Nigeria is to divide, I really don't see it happening peacefully unfortunately. |

Here is how the UK got their EU referendum... 1. The Conservatives made it a part of their campaign plan 2.As soon as they got into office, they passed the European Union Referendum Act 2015 3.The referendum held eventually. Now for a Biafra referendum to hold 1.It has to be part of a party's manifesto (which it isn't for now...PDP and APC vageuly talk about restructuring whenever they are in the Opposition, but do nothing much about it...and anyway restructuring is not necessarily the same thing as secession) 2.A law has to be passed allowing for the referendum to hold 3.Eventually, the referendum holds. Which is why I don't like our local secessionists. One would have xpected them to do more than hold huge rallies...instead they should form a party, sweep the votes in the South and Middle Belt...then show them Northern geng pepper well well. Instead they hold rallies, post them to social media, and pretend that all is going well. Meanwhile, using the democratic process could have gotten them somewhere by now. 3 Likes |

kponkedenge: Referenda have been held in Africa...like the 1961 plebiscites in the bits of the former German Kamerun on where they wanted to join...and one part voted for Nigeria, the other voted for Cameroon...and it went peacefully. In the early 1990's the road to South Africa becoming black-majority rule was paved by a referendum on the matter which allowed for a change in the laws to make multiracial democracy possible. Nigeria can divide peacefully...only if the Biafranists and the OOduaists realize that they can use the democratic tools available for the purpose. But they prefer to hold rallies...and more rallies. So do Christians and Muslims too...and up till now Nigeria is neither a 100% Muslim or Christian country. |

Beancounter93:Are you listening to your self? Which kind of education do you people receive in Nigeria? FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION is a fundamental human right and Referendum is a way to determine it. Nigeria never sat on referendum and abolished it (she can't). The fact that referendum is missing in Nigerian constitution shows how incomplete and backward it is. You should be ashamed of yourself. Beancounter93: Mr Mugurudeen the fulani muslim, when you illiterate quota talk, you only decieve your m0r0nic likes. British constitution is not even written or codified, if you argue otherwise can you show us the document that encompasses the British constitution and where 'referendum" is written therein? No need to waste time, you can't? Yet the British have held several referendums for many centuries. Anyway, nobody is begging for referendum anymore from the fulani animals and islamic bushmen from futa jallon. Everyone knows the language that you simian fulani apes speak--Violence. The indigenous tribes of this country that always seek to dominate will speak it to you very much soon. ![]() The f00lanis have everything to lose in the next war they eagerly itch to fight, their grip on Illorin, and other emirates will be challenged in the next war that they have threatened everyone. nairalandankrah: You deliberately have the story in reverse. Igbo has been talking of biafra and referendum ever since have known igbos. The killing never started until Nnamdi Kanu came into the scene, inciting his followers that without sacrifices, they cannot get what they wanted. This was when he threatened to go to Abuja and bring Buhari's head, said buhari was mad, declared they will be no elections in any part of igbo lands, formed an ESN (fully armed men and women), started attacking states infrastructure and security architecture and started killing policemen and soldiers. Without these activities, they would have been left alone. So don't tell the story in reverse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4jBToOT6TQ 1 Like |

BKayy: So based on your assertion there would have been no need for the British to pass an enabling law to have a brexit referendum Yet they did. N.B I did not say you cannot have your Biafra referendum if you want. I just merely stated you need a law to get there Which means you have to take part in the political process to do so So why throw a tantrum about that fact.? Especially since you yourself mentioned that our constitution is backward on lacking a law on secession. So, like I suggested, join the political process and get that law passed |

Re: Is Referendum A Crime? by Nobody: 3:13pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
rottennaija: At the time the secession clause was removed, no one foresaw the events of 1966 to 1970. Infact the original Biafra secession was made possible by the pogroms of 1966. Even then Ojukwu was for a united Nigeria until the Aburi accords got rejected by Gowon and company, and he got too angry enough to start listening to the secessionist elements in his government |

Re: Is Referendum A Crime? by Nobody: 3:33pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
mrvitalis: Funny you should mention arphateid, but it took several decades of political agitation...from the 1950's to the early 1990's before the poltical situation changed for a referendum to hold on ending arphateid...which was held on 17 march 1992. And the reason why it took violent agitaiton was that blacks were locked out of the demcoratic process until the 17 march referendum quickened the process of removing that lock As for Sowore...the problem with Nigerians is that most of us complain about PDP and APC every day, and at the end of the day we vote for PDP and APC. Many people also don't like Sowore either...and call him all sorts of names...because at one time or the other he may have attacked their favoured corrupt leader. Sowore does not win because he does not have enough support. It is sad...but that's the honest truth. Same reason why many decent candidates like Moghalu, Durotoye etc don't win. Nigerians, for all their complaining , prefer the PDP and the APC. |
Re: Is Referendum A Crime? by Nobody: 3:35pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
mrvitalis: That was formed under the provisions of the old first republic constitution, which is no longer in force since the 1966 coup. So your question is irrelevant. (Today if you want to form a state, you have to jump several hurdles to get there.) |
Re: Is Referendum A Crime? by Nobody: 3:37pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
mrvitalis: After over 70 years of agitation and after....I repeat after...a law was passed in 2010 which allowed for the referendum to hold. Plus the referendum was made possible in a way by scottish secessionists taking part in the polticial process...which led them to eventually ally with the stronger Labour party, under whose rule the law was passed.(Labour run governments had previously granted more autonomy to Scotland) |
Re: Is Referendum A Crime? by gidgiddy: 3:39pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
rottennaija: You are not right in this instance. The killings started long before Kanu came MASSOB started in 1999 under the leadership of Ralph Uwazurike. But despite MASSOB never being violent or using threatening language, the Nigerian Army and Police killed many of them. Nnamdi Kanu was In IPOB then and he saw that 'gentleman' approach is not what Nigeria respects. So he formed his own group and followed a more radical approach. If you want government to take you seriously in Nigeria, you have to be radical like Kanu 2 Likes |

Beancounter93: There is one problem with with all you wrote. The current constitution we operate, the 1999 constitution, was written by nobody In other words, while the constitution does not provide for referendum, it has no legitimacy since it did not emanate from Nigerians Therefore, the people are well within their rights to seek a referendum outside the constitution since the constitution its self is a fraud 2 Likes |

mrvitalis: Yeah because he had a dispute with them. Has nothing to do with secession or referendum. After all polticans get chased out of their parties all the time (His Bubu ship was chased out in a way from ANPP and ran to form CPC which contested elections for some time before it was absorbed into APC). |
