babyfaceafrica: This depends. My girlfriend, after being supervised by her Personal academic tutor in the UK, she learned valuable lessons about their relationship, it isn't predatory but cordial and understanding. Now, she applies this to her relationship with her students and supervisees here in Nigeria and she is regarded as the most friendly and approachable lecturer in her department. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Are you looking for a funded MSc/PhD position in Canada? These Profs (at Western University) are seeking students for specific research projects. The list is not exhaustive, so you can "cold email" other Profs there. https://twitter.com/drhammed/status/1402624132823633931?s=21

Prof and other gurus in the house, what are the chances of getting a faculty position abroad? Must one have a degree abroad? Publication strength: what number? Is age a barrier? What about conference attendance: Is it a requirement? Thank you. 1 Like |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 6:28pm On Jun 10, 2021 |
ejibaba: I believe there are opportunities to get faculty positions in practically any country that is open to foreigners, regardless of where the applicants received their education. However, these odds will vary depending on the country, the university's regulations for overseas applicants, and, most importantly, the applicant's verified profile. Must one have a degree abroad? To begin with, if you plan to work in a country where you did not graduate, your degree will be from another country (abroad, because if you want to work in the UK and graduated from Nigerian, means your degree is from abroad). And I believe your point is that if you have a degree from a country like the United Kingdom, for example, you want to know if it will be possible to secure a faculty position in Canada or the United States, or any other country. According to my experience, that of many of my students, and that of some acquaintances, having a foreign degree is not required for a variety of countries, but there are a number of countries that either directly or indirectly demand a degree from a specific country. For example, many countries in the Middle East, particularly Dubai, frequently mention in their job advertisements that they prefer applicants with degrees from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Some may not demand degrees from specific nations, but they have somehow come to believe that degrees from specific nations would be worthwhile to increase their profile or that someone from a given country is better equipped than someone from another set of countries/regions. Publication strength: what number? The majority of good schools in other countries hire depending on the applicant's profile. There are systems in place to analyze a large number of applications contending for a restricted number of slots. The most crucial aspect will be having a very competitive and verifiable profile. Some of the elements to be evaluated will be determined by the primary function of the academic position. If the job is mostly research-based, the employer will be seeking candidates with a big number of credible publications, experience managing financed projects, supervising a number of students, and research in areas that are in high demand. Some employment advertisements will specify the minimum number of publications, their index, and quality, as well as the frequency with which they are published. For example, a good university in Finland (LUT) is looking to appoint four faculty members; their advertisement states that: -- applicants must have at least 20 SCI-based papers that are searchable in WOS. -- applicants must have at least 10 papers in the last 5 years and must have supervised at least 2 graduate students. --applicants must have a minimum of 10 h-index. Only teaching positions that do not need research will have standards that reflect applicants with a good teaching background. Is age a barrier? I don't believe so, however, most universities favor applicants who have sufficient energy remaining in their bodies. So I believe would be much easier to employ someone less than 60 years than someone nearly 90 years unless that person has the key to unravel things that have never existed. What about conference attendance: Is it a requirement? The conference is part of the evaluation, although it has less importance in my opinion and from what I've seen. The conference is primarily intended to assess how applicants convey their research findings across numerous platforms. The reason for this is that, unlike published articles, books, or chapters, several conferences cannot be authenticated. I've seen a CV where someone listed 50 conferences but only 6 publications. It appears illogical to me. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 11:25am On Jun 12, 2021 |
ejibaba: Yes, I believe that is an excellent start. This will probably increase the chances of securing post-doctoral opportunities. I wish you the best of luck in your job search and encourage you to never stop growing. What justification does one have to claim multiple publication in a year most especially for social science disciplines and no funding in all? Is it what is obtainable? Would it not seem questionable? I don't understand this section. How would you respond to this reviewers comment: “ I doubt the data used for the analysis, as the authors failed to justify the process that account for the ease in obtaining a response rate of 75%”. I'll respond by providing the raw data's source, as well as the whole data set and an explanation of how the data were acquired. Finally, how do you approach scholars in your field for mentoring and not make a fool of yourself most especially when you have a PhD and there are expectations that you should know certain basic things but in all honesty, you don’t know them. Being a scholar entails more than just having a PhD or the title of professor. A genuine scholar is always learning from himself, others, objects, and the environment in order to grasp and understand the principle and laws of a specific or general thing. It is not a crime to ask questions in order to grow or to understand what he or she does not know, and it should not be viewed as a sign of inferiority. PhD is merely a degree; it does not provide the possessor omnipresence. It's simple: write whoever knows more than you sincerely, express your desire to learn something, and mention that you didn't have the opportunity to acquire it while doing your PhD for whatever reason. However, you realize that you must learn it in order to progress, and you will gladly be trained or directed in learning such skills/knowledge. 4 Likes 1 Share |

I still do not know how to download materials from science direct, please can someone put me through? 3. Is there anyone here working on machine learning and HCI? So we can share Ideas(more of like you can mentor me) 4. What are the steps to publishing an international journal? 5. What does a PHD Research proposal entail? i.e. what should i be looking out for while writing the proposal? 6. For someone who lives and works in Abuja (Gwarinpa, Jabi, Lifecamp) area what is the best internet network to use? Thank you. 2 Likes 1 Share |

For your last question: I'ld recommend the internet network mostly in use by cyber cafes within the location.Do some physical enquiry! 3 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by KelvinCoaster(m): 10:54am On Jun 14, 2021 |
Sweetmango, the same process required in sending articles to your local journals still applies when sending to foreign journals: 1. Read the 'aim & scope' of the journal to understand what they consider. 2. Carefully read the 'instruction for authors' or 'author's guide' to understand what is expected of you. I prefer saying 'foreign journals' rather than 'international journals'. 3 Likes 3 Shares |
