Engineers Don't You Think Vehicles Should Be Built With Stronger Frames? by Nobody: 8:44am On Jun 09, 2021 |
Honestly I am tired of seeing cars and beautiful vehicles crumpled like tin cans when accidents occur. so engineers in the house, seeing that we have high powered engines and lighter composite materials, why are vehicles not made stronger. I don't think a car with two inch thick amour will have any problems in an accident( I know that there are other variables that come into play in these situations) what do you think? Lalasticlala come and select your next amoured car ooo marpol abeg come and take this to the promise land. |

When you have a car that does not crumple and absorb the speed and impact of the crash, it will most likely kill you or cause grave injuries. Most old cars from 25 years ago do not have energy absorbing crumple zones and this resulted in high incidences of injuries and fatalities. 9 Likes 1 Share |

kingreign: Dame!! the car hits the instruction but the occupant's still moving. what else can we do about it? |

ekerensima: You mean, the car hits an obstruction and stops but occupants still keeps moving? Yes, if that's what you meant to write. Automobile safety has gone advanced. Now cars have pretensioned 3 point seat belts, collapsible steering columns and pedals, crash safety crumple zones in front, sides and rear to absorb the force of impact, and dissipate this force around the vehicle thus damaging the vehicle but saving the occupants. 8 Likes |

kingreign:yes. Exactlay what I meant, no wonder I dey see SUV's for upwards of $25,000 if it gat those features you mensioned above then they really worth the price. Wy major concern is with buses |

ekerensima: It is a consequence of Newton's first law. ' An object will always remain at rest or in a state of uniform motion in a straight line unless a force is imposed on it.' When a car hits a barrier or an obstacle at say 100km/h, that vehicle is decelerated from that speed to zero in a matter of milliseconds. The consequence is that every element on and in that vehicle will continue to move until they all hit a barrier themselves, including any occupant , luggage, even the door and boot if not properly closed will swing open in the direction the vehicle was impacted. The problem is not the stopping itself, but the time it takes to do that. , meaning that the forces any occupant would experience would be sometimes up to 5 times their weight , depending on the speed. Because of this, there must be some form of energy dissipation to , as much as possible slow down the speed of the vehicle and absorb and deflect the energy away from the occupants. This is achieved using high strength materials with adequate ductility(e.g high strength steels) to achieve this aim, together with how these materials and be configured to intelligently achieve this. This is why wearing your seatbelt is very important, as it restrains the occupant adequately to prevent them from hitting any obstacle during such occurrence. This has improved tremendously with the advent of seatbelt pretensioners, dual stage airbags and the likes, and improvement is still going on. Remember the Presafe technology in Mercedes Benz vehicles? One thing to also note here is that the energy required to be dissipated in an impact is a function of the square of the speed at which the vehicle was traveling. This is why someone would survive a 100km/h impact and another would die at 120km/h. 2 Likes |

Inception:thou art knowledgable in thy physics! Boss them go just teach us momentum, impuls and velocity time graph with out real life consequences, thank you sir. You will notice that accident at higher speeds would cause the compartment areas to become (unfortunately) part of the crumple zone. Thank God for engeneers like you a lot of lives will be safe. |

Everyone up there said the right things but on a different note, I'll say the stronger the panels, the heavier the car and the slower it comes. My own question is a little different. I know cars are equipped with airbags at almost everywhere but why not interior foams to support the airbags. Say all the door panels are cover with foam like leathers. 1 Like |

Inception: NICE write up and educating. I always remind myself that 100km/h is my speed limit in Nigeria no matter how good the road may be . |

If you are going to run into a wall, is it better to have a pillow in front of you or a block of metal. The block of metal will not have any damage on it but you will feel the impact, but the pillow will be deformed while you are undamaged. The focus is on your safety, cars can be replaced easily 1 Like 1 Share |

Stronger panel means heavier vehicles and consequently more energy needed to move and more fuel spent Engineers are looking towards fuel efficient vehicles 1 Like |

ekerensima:That was olden days car design. And people died anyhow at the expense of strong car body. Car is your slave, not your master. You should remain alive, whilst the car dies instead. Hence the shift over to softer body work with crumple zones. Below is a clip from Fifth Gear, showing a uselessly STRONG small car with full explanation of all the demerits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnI-LiKCtuE 1 Like |

ekerensima:F1 cars, Bughatti and other super cars use these materials, but they still design the car to crumple in accidents instead and save the occupants' lives in impact. I guess this Audi is more on the consumer side with multiple body materials. But Audi no cheap na! Especially these new ones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuJMtW3xeNQ |

Nice video husband! @topic... guess all was explained! Many people still believe the heavier... stronger ... bigger cars were safer. I see them a lot on the road.... and the older they be ... like those from the 60's and before....the stronger my fear become. They absorb no impact .... and when the waves come through .... if you be driver... well good luck k in them taking the steering pole out of your chest.... if you be front seat passenger.... before you can hit the road... you will be already dead... throat slashed from the windscreen glass. Backseat passengers will follow the same path... not likely to have throats slashed.... but meet their demise as the engingbrushes into the passenger compartment area. I fear those cars. Stronger... lighter materials yes... but not good for business... too costly. This one.... a regular car lost control and ran into it..... if the driver was in the driver seat.... RIP...something like that!

Originalsly: the force simply flows through everything in the car! that drivers neck might have snapped by the impact. was reading a novel recently survivers bailed out of a sinking battle ship, they were fired upon by enemy shells, now here's the cracker water Doesn't compress and those close enough were kill by the wake of the shell 1 Like |
