While the Iwerre people are still mourning the dismiss of their late king, OLU Ikenwoli Emiko, there seems to be power tussle between the royal princes. Earlier today, Son of OLU Ikenwoli, Prince Oyowoli Emiko has dragged his cousin, Omo-Oba Tsola Emiko to court over his appointment as the 21st OLU of Warri.

The Itsekiri royal heritage should be studied. These names and titles sounds too Yoruba-ish

Prince Tsola Emiko back in April was announced as the 21st incoming OLU of the Itsekiri people after several consultation with the Ife Oracle.

His announcement was met with resistance by some royal princes and the Ologbostere of Warri, who hinted that Prince Tsola didn't meet the requirements as stated in the 1979 Edict.

According to the Edict, for one of become an OLU of the Itsekiri people, his mother must be either Itsekiri or Edo, but unfortunately, Prince Tsola Emiko's Mother is a Yoruba woman from OGUN.

According to the king makers, previous OLUs with Portuguese and Ijaw mothers were crowned and so the case of Prince Tsola Emiko wasn't new.

Reacting to Prince Tsola's confirmation, opposing princes such as Joseph Emiko, Yemi Emiko, Bernard Emiko, Toba Emiko, Debi Emiko, young Emiko, Dudu Emiko, Jaiye Emiko and Samuel Emiko had a meeting where they all released a joint statement distancing themselves from the announcement made by the king makers.

Today, the son of OLU Ikenwoli, Oyowoli Emiko is taking the battle to court, a move many have condemned.

While the struggle continues, the Delta State government, led by Ifeanyi Okowa has confirmed and reiterated his support for the Itsekiri nation. Also, several Itsekiri groups have sent in their congratulatory messages, including Itsekiri's chapter of the OPC.

Hhmmm... Who are these ones? African history/culture is really deep and complex. The whole kingship thing is fascinating. It's just like those days when kings used to have real powers.

Does the customary law have provisions for the appointment of kings? Is it strictly governed by the traditions of the village? If so, how will the court help in this case? I'm really curious as regards the meeting point of traditions and the law in Africa.

Who is saying Itsekiris are Yorubas with heavy Bini influence? You don't know history.

The Itsekiris were birthed from Bini. The Binis even influenced the Yorubas.

Go and read.

I'm an Igbo man BTW. Facts should be told.

Make Oyowoli go rest. If that edict is anything to go by, his late father Ikenwoli is never supposed to be the 20th Olu because his mother is Ijaw. Tsola is already the Olu, he’s carried all the deities in itsekiri land and the Delta state government has already recognized him as the Olu. So what’s all this going to court and brouhaha for.

I think you are wrong with this fact. The Itsekiri were river dwelling people united by a Bini prince. Before the coming of Ginuwa, the people already existed. The Bini only united them, reason why to become an OLU, your mother MUST either be Bini or Itsekiri, but somehow, the Itsekiri were no longer comfortable with the rules.

For example, Omadino people were from Ijebu, Ugborodo were from Ugbo, Escravos came from Ilaje and even till date, these communities still pay ancestral homage to their origin.

Igbo man calm Down

You see people bearing cong Yoruba names
Even have OPC branch in thier region .... you're here spewing rubbish ...... No matter how u try separate father and son.... The blood will still bring them together

Secondly you saying Benin influenced yoruba is absolutely nonsense... You think Yorùbá tribe is like urs .... Go read ur history boy.... Even the so called Benin have history with yoruba.... Leave nigeria...go to southern American countries and see how they practice yoruba.... So many ethnic groups in western African countries have yoruba heritage.... Yoruba is not Igbo tribe with influence only within their dot in a circle 4 to 5 states...
