I couldn't save a dime while I was serving & I am not prodigal or foodie. I gave out more than I spent sef - friends, family, church, students & to my host community. And I got employed the same month I finished serving, I had the letter in hand even before my POP. I'm only earning 5 digits salary though, I finished serving last year & my bank account never lacks monthly alerts right from NYSC till today. And many of my colleagues who were only after saving much money have finished spending the money now. I'm not a saying it's not good to save but we need to cultivate the habit of giving from the little we have to the needy around us. I would rather have my account emptied than watch a fellow human suffer or die of petty things. God doesn't owe a man,,, just make sure you do it cheerfully. I do challenge God with my giving nature - If I lack any good things, there might be no one to put a smile on the faces of the needy around me & HE has been faithful to that. 5 Likes |

How can you spend 15k on food monthly while in the north....thought they said food is cheap there |
Re: Monthly Budget Of A Youth Corper Serving In The North by anochuko01(m): 11:09pm On Jun 18, 2021 |
15k on food would do. 1500 on data simply shows you're not planning to learn anything new. Learning new skills would pay you in the long run than whatever you're gonna save. 1500 on miscellaneous? That's totally impossible. Barbing and offering would certainly take half of that. It'll be nice if you can save up to 10k monthly sha. 1 Like |

hilltop007: You are lucky they did not post you to Imo state. Two factors: 1) cost of living is very high in Imo. 2) you risk getting shot by Nigeria’s armed forces who were sent to look for unknown gunmen; unknown gunmen sent by terrorists sympathizers in high places to attack government buildings and kill soldiers and policemen - all aimed to take out security apparatuses in the east. |

You can't definitely have this kind of budget when u are serving in Lagos, cost of transportation in Lagos is definitely the highest in the country, cos of feeding in Lagos is freaking higher that cost of feeding in the North, your data of ₦1500 for a month still baffles me, I guess u don't use the internet regularly, to cap it all, I guess u don't have a GF cos if u do, all Ur budget for a month might be budget for a day 1 Like |

Hamzashaf99: You made a good point. When I was at UI, I will travel back home to Lagos and collect my normal allowance and then bill my parents for expensive medical books that I got cheap from friends who were one year ahead of me and I would stay back in Lagos whilst my parents thought I was back at UI and squander most of my largess on my friends and girlfriend at restaurants and only leave Lagos when the money nearly ran out. Back at UI, I would then go to the market and charter dry beans, garri, dry pepper, onions and palm oil to last me till another pay day from my parents. But I had this room mate who was studying History who used to survive on only yam and palm oil because that was all his Dad gave him and one day his Dad came looking for him and didn't meet him on campus and the next time his Dad came, his Dad physically beat him up in the presence of his room mates. I felt so bad for the guy and I hope he is rich now. My main point is that those coming from a poor background or those who are blessed with being frugal from a young age can save something from nothing. Unlike us who discovered beer parlors and abe igi pepper soup joints as teenagers and are also too generous for our own good such that the Op's whole monthly allowance will not survive one beer parlor visit with my crew. I actually envy people who can be as frugal as the Op but like someone said, maybe the Op does not have a girlfriend as the chaps monthly allowance is not compatible with having a girlfriend. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Hamzashaf99: True talk although once you survive that period of hardship and better times return, its very easy to start spending big again. Its just human nature as you try to over compensate for the times you did without. Its just like when Yoruba people say "Omuti Gbabe Ise" meaning that when an alcohol imbiber finally gets a financial breakthrough, he will forget his days of poverty and spend big all over again. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Hamzashaf99:l agree with you. In addition, just get an airtel line. Dial *241*7# and click on 3 to get 6000 airtime to call any network and 1GB. Valid for 1 month. It will only cost you 500 naira if you are eligible. |
