White supremacy in maths.
Tdotbluejays1 you that like to support every crap from the left, how do you defend this one?

This tool provides teachers an opportunity to examine their actions, beliefs, and values around teaching math-ematics. The framework for deconstructing racism in mathematics offers essential characteristics of antiracist math educators and critical approaches to dismantling white supremacy in math classrooms by making visi-ble the toxic characteristics of white supremacy culture (Jones and Okun 2001; dismantling Racism 2016) with respect to math. Building on the framework, teachers engage with critical praxis in order to shift their instruc-tional beliefs and practices towards antiracist math ed-ucation. By centering antiracism, we model how to be antiracist math educators with accountability. While primarily for math educa-tors, this text advocates for a collective approach to dismantling white supremacy. This school-wide approach ensures that anti-racist work is not left alone to one individual (i.e., math teacher or the director of equity), but to enlist the support and voice of all stakehold-ers in the school ecosystem. • Teachers should use this work-book to self-reflect on individual practices in the classroom and identify next steps in their anti-racist journey as a math educator. • Leaders and coaches should use the framework during observa-tions and walkthroughs, annotat-ing the behaviors and providing targeted feedback. • Administrators should examine programs and policies and how white supremacy impacts student outcomes (e.g., tracking, course selection, intervention rosters). In addition, they can hold teachers accountable for completing the activities in this workbook.HOW TO USE THIS TOOLCONTENT DEVELOPERSSonia Michelle Cintron Math Content Specialist UnboundEdDani Wadlington Director of Mathematics Education Q

Funny thing is that the issues raised in what you posted apply in Nigeria, though not mainly due to race per se but due to our underlying ideologies and beliefs.

An example is a person I am discussing with who believes a science textbook, Physics to be precise, should be believed, when the entire purpose of any science is to teach sceptism and to use your own senses to ask and knock and seek. In justifying his beliefs he distorts facts.

If a teacher has racial or religious or any other biased underpinning beliefs, those beliefs would seep into all areas of their teachings and distort the truth, and a teacher who wants to teach well would start by teaching themselves not to be biased, which is what is taught by what you posted, Ben, as you'd find if you read it.

Trust Ben to pick articles and misinterpret them.
A case of not being able to give what you don't have.

In as much as I haven't read the book. But from the prologue, it seems the book talks more about the individual (teacher of maths in this case) and not mathematics the subject.

Ben already tagged the book Liberal all because it talks about breaking down barriers due to known bias or unconscious bias individuals (maths educators in this case) might have. I remember when I started my program at the University in Salford, I had a believe that I can't best Indians and Chinese in engineering because of the stereotypes we had been continually fed about Asians being geniuses. I won't be suprised if some of my educators had the same bias. Well, gladly some were coming to me for help with assignments and coursework.

I am not even going to talk about the examples of smart kids of Nigerian trained doctors here in Canada and their experiences in schools of rural communities their parents had been posted to.

You make a claim prove it.
First of all Tdotbluejays1 said there is this stereotypes of Asians and Indians good at maths and he did better than them. Good, I am proud. The book is saying their is WHITE SUPREMACY in maths. I don't know how that connects to what he said. Chinese and Indians are not even whites. Tdotbluejays1 got the same lectures in maths as whites and any other race. So how does what the book is saying have anything to do with him having the belief that asians and Indians are good in maths? Asians and Chinese are good does not mean all Asians and Chinese are good in maths too.

He is not lieing. It's just ignorance and it's bliss plus not being able to think outside a box. Like I said earlier, people can't give what they do not have. Apparently, the educational system is getting worse in Nigeria just as much as the ruling class.

I don't understand why he is getting worked up over an article that suggests ways to improve mathematical teaching in a racialized educational setting.

You clearly do not understand what you are reading!

I am buda! I did not seek equity for my child in maths and all other subjects my children studied! I sought superiority in maths for my children instead by teaching them myself from when they were in the womb and by ensuring they practise and study maths and their other subjects more than any other person's children as soon as they were born because I know the importance of maths to my childrens education and their future!

You be there settling to be equal to others if you wish! Some are pushing for much better. But schools must at least be fair regardless of race, gender, ethnic origin, wealth, religion, etc etc!

I should not expect you to understand. You are fortunate to not have children growing up in a society where they are a minority or they would have come home to inform you how they can be discouraged from simply asking questions in class or how the teachers might answer questions from white kids and not from them, or how they are written off just because of the colour of their skin.

The book has nothing to do with this. This could happen in any subject and there are racist teachers. You show you have no understanding of what I am talking about. Besides I have nieces, and nephews who studies abroad. Non of them have made any such claims. It's not to say such things don't happen. Right now we are talking about maths.

I don't understand but you can't answer my questions. It's not to be on Nairaland wearing the smart monopoly. I don't suck up to nonsense, no question I asked you ever answered the great god of wisdom. As usual you brush it to the side.

I guess the mathematicians who thinks these are bullshit are not smart but the sjw who don't major in maths or understand anything in math who draft the proposal are the smart ones because they have the word RACIST in it so you and Tdotbluejays1 most embrace the delusion.

I am still waiting for a delusion you don't support.

To be honest with you Ben, you are making it hard for me to observe Sunday Rules, and I'm even beginning to doubt I could possibly stick to Disstroy's all week rule!

The above shows you have not bothered to read the book because what you claim is very clearly not written in it nor is it even inferred, and anyone who implies that what you are claiming is what is in the book, is either being evil or is just plain ignorant and I can't honestly decide which is worse.

Do know that what is written in the book does apply to all teachings, and that biases in the education system does a lot of damage to those being 'taught', and while a government should rightly ensure equity in a school system, a parent must go much further and seek superior education for their offspring. That is the reason some chose to pay their child's school fees instead of sending their children to free state schools. It's to get superior education for their child, and not equity education that government schools provide!

From the book
And see the first bullet point. The funny thing is; this is a standard for all students.
So tell me why it's white supremacy to get the right answer? Do they mean blacks are not capable to get the right answer?
White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions. Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics. The table below identifies the ways in which white supremacy shows up in math classrooms.

We see white supremacy culture show up in the mathematics classroom even as we carry out our professional responsibilities outlined in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Using CSTPas a framework, we see white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom can show up when:

There is a greater focus on getting the "right" answer than understanding concepts and reasoning.
Independent practice is valued over teamwork or collaboration.
• Contrived word problems are valued over the math in students' lived experiences.
• Students are tracked (into courses/pathways and within the classroom).
• Participation structures reinforce dominant ways of being.

Mistakes are addressed as failure rather than as opportunities to learn.
• Control of classrooms is valued over student's agnecy over their learning.

• Students are required to “show their work” in standardized, prescribed ways.
• Grading practices that center what sutdents don't understand rather than what they do.
• Language acquisition is equated with mathematical proficiency.

They went on to say this
These common practices that perpetuate white supremacy culture create and sustain institutional and systemic barriers to equity for Black, Latinx, and Multilingual students. In order to dismantle these barriers, we must identify what it means to be an antiracist math educator.

So tell me if you are the one who didn't read it or I am the one?
